We examine the management of livestock diseases from the producers‘ perspective, incorporating information and incentive asymmetries
between producers and regulators. Using a stochastic dynamic model, we examine responses to different policy options including
indemnity payments, subsidies to report at-risk animals, monitoring, and regulatory approaches to decreasing infection risks
when perverse incentives and multiple policies interact. This conceptual analysis illustrates the importance of designing
efficient combinations of regulatory and incentive-based policies.

Ferrihydrite (Fh) coprecipitated with exopolymers of plants and microbes may differ in its geochemical reactivity from its abiotic counterpart. We synthesized Fh in the presence and absence of acid polysaccharides (polygalacturonic acid (PGA), alginate, xanthan) and characterized the physical and structural properties of the precipitates formed [Mikutta C., Mikutta R., Bonneville S., Wagner F., Voegelin A., Christl I. and Kretzschmar R. (2008) Synthetic coprecipitates of exopolysaccharides and ferrihydrite. Part I: Characterization. Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta]. In this paper, we focus on the reactivity of PGA and alginate coprecipitates and pure Fh, and studied their interaction with the microbial siderophore desferrioxamine B (DFOB) in the presence and absence of low molecular weight organic (LMWO) acid anions (malate, citrate). Batch adsorption and dissolution experiments were performed in the dark at pH 7 in 10 mM NaClO4 background electrolyte. In the dissolution experiments, different modes of ligand addition were applied (single, simultaneous, stepwise). With an estimated Langmuir sorption maximum of 15 mmol/mol Fe, a PGA coprecipitate with 11% Corg sorbed about four times as much DFOB as pure Fh, and the amount of DFOB sorbed was ∼4-fold larger than estimated from the sum of DFOB sorption to pure Fh and PGA alone. The apparent initial dissolution rates, Rapp-initial, and pseudo-first order rate coefficients, k, of the coprecipitates exceeded those of pure Fh by up to two orders of magnitude. Citrate and malate exerted a strong synergistic effect on the DFOB-promoted dissolution of pure Fh, whereas synergistic effects of both anions were absent or negligible for the coprecipitates. Rapp-initial of the citrate and DFOB-promoted dissolution of PGA coprecipitates increased with increasing molar C/Fe ratio of the coprecipitates, independent of the charge of the LMWO ligand. Our results indicate that polyuronates stabilize Fh particles sterically and /or electrostatically, thus increasing the mineral surface area accessible to LMWO ligands. In contrast, pure Fh was coagulated at pH 7 (pHiep of Fh = 7.1), and hence only a small fraction of the Fh surface underwent dissolution. The increase in ligand-accessible surface area of Fh upon coprecipitation with acid polysaccharides seems to primarily control the kinetics of the ligand-promoted dissolution at neutral pH. In pH environments where the solubility of Fe(III) is very low, dissolution rates of Fe(III) (hydr)oxides in such coprecipitates may therefore exceed those of pure minerals by several orders of magnitude, despite a similar crystallinity of the minerals. 相似文献

The Cretaceous Normal Superchron is a period of great interest to investigate global scale variations of the geomagnetic field. Long periods of single polarity are still a matter of debate: up to now there are two contradicting theories, which try to relate geomagnetic field intensity and reversal rate. We aim to shed light on the geomagnetic field strength during the Cretaceous Normal Superchron because data are still scarce and of dissimilar quality. To obtain reliable, absolute paleointensity determinations we investigate volcanic rocks from the Western Cordillera of Colombia. Several age determinations allow relating the samples to an age of about 92.5 Ma. To characterize the samples, we investigate rock magnetic properties and determine the characteristic remanent magnetization behavior. To determine paleointensities, we use a multimethod approach: first, we apply the classic Thellier-Coe protocol, and then, the relatively new multispecimen method. Rock magnetic measurements indicate magnetite as the main ferrimagnetic mineral, a stable magnetization revealed by reversible and nearly reversible thermomagnetic curves, and grain sizes that are either in the pseudosingle domain range or a mixture of single and multidomain grains. Alternating field and thermal demagnetization are rather complex, although we observe a few vector diagrams with a single, essentially uni-vectorial component with a small viscous overprint. Paleointensity determination with the Thellier-Coe protocol was unsuccessful, while with the multispecimen protocol we obtained four successful determinations out of 20. The failure of the Thellier-Coe protocol can be attributed to multidomain grains, which were observed during demagnetization and in rock magnetic experiments, and to the inhomogeneity of the volcanic rocks. Our multispecimen paleointensity determinations support low field strength at around 90 Ma during the Cretaceous Normal Superchron. 相似文献

Abstract In this article, we undertake an analysis of accessibility to jobs from the perspective of single-parent household members. Individuals in this demographic segment are of interest due to the fact they often face the double burden of household and employment responsibilities. A case study of the city of Toronto in Canada, an urban area that has seen an increase in absolute and relative numbers of single-parent households in recent years, is presented. Analysis is based on the application of relative accessibility deprivation indicators (RADI), which are calculated using model-based estimates of distance traveled for various population segments, as well as employment data for the city and its surroundings. The results of the analysis indicate that there are substantial differences in the levels of accessibility to jobs between members of single-parent households, in particular females, and members of other types of households. 相似文献

This 10-year field data study explores the relevance of water level fluctuations in driving the shift from a free-floating plant (FFP) to a phytoplankton dominated state in a shallow floodplain lake from the Lower Paraná River. The multi-year natural flood pulse pattern in the Lower Paraná River drove the ecosystem regime from a FFP-dominant state during very high waters (1998–1999) to absolute phytoplankton prevalence with blooms of nitrogen fixing Cyanobacteria during extreme low waters (2008–2009). Satellite images support the observed changes over the decade and show the decrease of the surface lake area covered by FFP as well as the modification of the spectral firm in open waters, which documents the significant increases in phytoplankton chlorophyll a concentrations. We discuss the possibility that, despite a slow eutrophication in these highly vegetated systems, water level changes and not nutrients account for the shift from a floating macrophyte community to phytoplankton dominance. Cyclic shifts may occur in response to the seasonal floodpulse, but more strongly, as indicated by our results, in association to the extreme drought and flood events related to the El Niño Southern Oscillation, which is linked to discharge anomalies in the Paraná River. 相似文献

Earthquake catalogues for Romania supply for 11th–15th century earthquakes located in the region of Vrancea records that consist
of a complete set of parameters, including magnitude and depth. Scope of this paper is to verify the reliability and consistency
of these parameters with the informative background as explicitly referenced by the catalogues. After retrieving the original
sources they mention, the set of data appeared to be related almost exclusively to the Russian plain and too poor to be at
the very origin of the parameter assessment. Data for 19th–20th century earthquakes, such as instrumental locations and CMT
solutions, added to the understanding of the macroseismic response of the Russian plain to Vrancea earthquakes. On the one
hand, the investigation and analysis of historical earthquake records for the fourteen events listed by the catalogues in
the 11th–15th centuries has shown that for three earthquakes (1022, 1038, 1258) no primary sources could be traced, and three
more earthquakes (1091, 1170 and 1328) are attested only by scarcely reliable records and had to be classified as doubtful,
and one (1473) is simply a duplication of the 1471 event. On the other hand, the availability of data on recent earthquakes
that may be compared to historical ones in terms of macroseismic effects allowed the authors to agree with the previous catalogue
compilers’ solution with regard to both magnitude and depth of the past earthquakes for which do exist reliable primary historical

In this paper, we present a computational framework for the simulation of coupled flow and reservoir geomechanics. The physical
model is restricted to Biot’s theory of single-phase flow and linear poroelasticity, but is sufficiently general to be extended
to multiphase flow problems and inelastic behavior. The distinctive technical aspects of our approach are: (1) the space discretization
of the equations. The unknown variables are the pressure, the fluid velocity, and the rock displacements. We recognize that
these variables are of very different nature, and need to be discretized differently. We propose a mixed finite element space
discretization, which is stable, convergent, locally mass conservative, and employs a single computational grid. To ensure
stability and robustness, we perform an implicit time integration of the fluid flow equations. (2) The strategies for the
solution of the coupled system. We compare different solution strategies, including the fully coupled approach, the usual
(conditionally stable) iteratively coupled approach, and a less common unconditionally stable sequential scheme. We show that
the latter scheme corresponds to a modified block Jacobi method, which also enjoys improved convergence properties. This computational
model has been implemented in an object-oriented reservoir simulator, whose modular design allows for further extensions and
enhancements. We show several representative numerical simulations that illustrate the effectiveness of the approach. 相似文献
