The influence of bottom water anoxia on manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), and sulfur (S) biogeochemistry was examined in defaunated sandy sediment from Kærby Fed, Denmark, under controlled laboratory incubations. The initial narrow peaks and steep gradients in solid Mn(IV) and Fe(III) as well as porewater Mn2+ and Fe2+ observed in the upper 2–5 cm of the sediment indicate rapid metal reduction-oxidation cycles under oxic conditions in the overlying water. The fe zones were generally displaced about 0.5 cm downward compared with the Mn zones due to differences in reactivity. Mn(IV) was reduced and gradually disappeared first (within 10 d) when the sediment was exposed to anoxia followed by reduction and disappearance of Fe(III) (day 7 to 18). The associated loss of Mn2+ to the overlying water was most rapid during the first 15 d, whereas the Fe2+ efflux initiated around day 10, and after a few days with modest rates the efflux peaked around day 20. A considerable portion of the total Mn (26%) and Fe (23%) inventory initially present in the sediment was lost by efflux after about 1 mo of anoxia. The ability of the sediment to retain upward diffusion of H2S gradually disappeared in a temporal pattern closely related to the changes in pool size of the reactive Mn and Fe present. The total metal pool in Kærby Fed sediment prevented H2S release to the overlying water for at least a month of anoxia. It is speculated that external supplies from the overlying water allows a rapid refuelling of surface Mn and Fe oxides in the field when oxic conditions returns between periods of anoxia. 相似文献

Lead has been determined in 105 water samples from the north east Atlantic and from the North Sea. Rigorous precautions were applied to avoid contamination during sampling and analysis.Two different analytical methods were used: ASV and AAS. Determinations with ASV were carried out on board, directly after sampling. After two months storage, acidified samples were analysed by AAS after freon dithiocarbamate extraction and nitric acid back extraction. Particulate lead was determined by AAS after an acid digestion.The profiles of lead concentration versus depth show around 160 pM at the surface and around 20 pM at the bottom, both in the Atlantic and in the Norwegian Sea. The shapes of the profiles are different, however, depending on the hydrography of the area sampled. The profiles from the north east Atlantic coincide with a recently published profile from the north west Atlantic. Moreover, these profiles have lead concentrations about a factor of three higher than those in the Pacific.Considering the high lead input to the North Sea, the lead concentrations found there are remarkably low, probably because of scavenging effects in estuaries leading to a short residence time in the water column. The dominant lead input in offshore regions is from the atmosphere. Multicolour VRI photometry and astrometry of one Centaur and seven Edgeworth-Kuiper objects were obtained. One object, 1994 JQ1 may be as red as 5145 Pholus, the reddest minor planet previously known. The Centaur 1995 DW2 has more moderate colour indices, similar to main-belt asteroids. Seven R-magnitudes were obtained for 1994 JS, 1995 FB21, and 1995 GY7. No light variation above the expected noise is evident, apart from a few outliers. A total of 47 astrometric positions were obtained for the eight objects. The four nights of observations with the ESO New Technology Telescope covered 0.52 square degrees. Two previosuly unknown object, 1995 FB21 and 1995 GY7, were discovered. We estimate the density of Edgeworth-Kuiper objects brighter than R = 24 to 5.3 per square degree of sky near the ecliptic. 相似文献
