Using the micro-structure profiler, TurboMAP, large values for the turbulent energy dissipation rate ε were found just above the bottom of the shelf and around the thermocline near the continental shelf break in the East China
Sea. The values found above the bottom are produced by the bottom stress due to tidal currents, resulting in a distinct bottom
mixed layer where the vertical eddy diffusivity Kz is also large. Distinct maxima in the values of ε detected around the thermocline are located at the depth of the fine-scale shear maxima detected with the moored ADCP. The
vertical profiles of ε were compared with those of the current velocity, and it was found that the maxima in ε appear to correspond to those of the shear with fine scale. The magnitude of the observed ε coincided approximately with the ε calculated from the fine-scale shear and the buoyancy frequency according to the parameterization proposed by Gregg (1989),
if the large-scale mean shear caused by the Kuroshio is subtracted. However, it is not clear whether the parameterization
for the internal wave fields in the open ocean is applicable to the estimation of ε in the shelf break. Whereas the most predominant value of ε was found just above the bottom and around the thermocline, the maxima of ε could be found in the internal area. A Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model representing the air flow within and above a plant canopy layer has been completed. Using this model, the organized structures of turbulent flow in the early developmental stages of a crop are simulated and discussed in detail.The effect of the drag due to vegetation is expressed by a term added to the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation averaged over the grid scale. For the formulation of sub-grid turbulence processes, the equations for the time-dependent SGS (Sub-Grid-Scale) turbulence energy equation is used, which includes the effects of dissipation (both by viscosity and leaf drag), shear production and diffusion.The organized structure of turbulent flow at the air-plant interface, obtained numerically by the model, yields its contribution to momentum transfer. The three-dimensional large eddy structures, which are composed of spanwise vortices (rolls) and streamwise vortices (ribs), are simulated near the air-plant interface. They are induced by the shear instability at inflection points of the velocity profile. The structure clearly has a life cycle. The instantaneous image of the structure is similar to those observed in the field observations of Gaoet al. (1989) and in the laboratory flume experiments of Ikeda and Ota (1992). These organized structures also account for the well known fact that the sweep motion of turbulence dominates momentum transport within and just above a plant canopy, and the motion of ejection prevails in the higher regions. 相似文献

To comprehensively understand the Arctic and Antarctic upper atmosphere, it is often crucial to analyze various data that are obtained from many regions. Infrastructure that promotes such interdisciplinary studies on the upper atmosphere has been developed by a Japanese inter-university project called the Inter-university Upper atmosphere Global Observation Network (1UGONET). The objective of this paper is to describe the infrastructure and tools developed by IUGONET. We focus on the data analysis software. It is written in Interactive Data Language (IDL) and is a plug-in for the THEMIS Data Analysis Software suite (TDAS), which is a set of IDL libraries used to visualize and analyze satellite- and ground-based data. We present plots of upper atmospheric data provided by IUGONET as examples of applications, and verify the usefulness of the software in the study of polar science. We discuss IUGONET's new and unique developments, i.e., an executable file of TDAS that can run on the IDL Virtual Machine, IDL routines to retrieve metadata from the IUGONET database, and an archive of 3-D simulation data that uses the Common Data Format so that it can easily be used with TDAS. 相似文献

Concept and performance testing of a high‐capacity oil damper comprising multiple damper units 下载免费PDF全文
There has been a significant increase in the size of building structures in recent years. Huge structures such as high‐rise buildings and large‐domed stadiums require high‐performance structural control, including the use of high‐capacity dampers, especially in an earthquake‐prone country like Japan. The objective of the present study was the enhancement of both human and structural safety in such structures through the development of a rate‐dependent type of damper with a high damping capacity. Among the various available types of rate‐dependent dampers, the authors focused on the oil damper owing to its stable performance against long‐duration vibrations. The target maximum damping force was 6000 kN, which is higher than that of any existing oil damper utilized in building structures. The authors developed a novel concept for achieving this high capacity while maintaining the size of the damper within acceptable dimensions from an architectural point of view. The concept involves the use of multiple damper units that produce mechanically parallel damping forces spatially arranged in series. As a prototype, a 1500‐kN oil damper was fabricated by combining three 500‐kN dampers. The 1500‐kN prototype damper was conceived as a full‐scale prototype of a damper that is more slender than comparable commercially available dampers in Japan, and as a scaled model of the proposed 6000‐kN damper. Sinusoidal loading tests were conducted on the prototype damper using a frequency range of 0.1–1.5 Hz and a velocity range of 0.4–300 mm/s. The results confirmed that the damper produced the design damping forces. The results of earthquake loading tests also revealed that the damper exerted a stable damping force against a large earthquake and maintained its performance after the earthquake. The damper is particularly effective against earthquakes with long‐period components that could increase the temperature of a damper. This is afforded by its high heat capacity compared to conventional dampers. Considering that the proposed 6000‐kN damper will generate a damping force that is about 2–3 times that of the strongest conventional oil damper, existing manufacturer test machines would be inadequate for evaluating its full performance characteristics. To address this issue, the authors also propose a test method for evaluating the overall damping force. The method is premised on the fact that the characteristic feature of the proposed damper is its combination of multiple damper units. The overall performance is thus evaluated using the test results for the individual damper units while the other dampers are bypassed. This method was verified by the results of the abovementioned sinusoidal loading tests, with the error for the 1500‐kN prototype damper found to be less than 5%. During surveillance of the distribution of the paralytic shellfish poison (PSP)-producing dinoflagellate in 2003, 2004 and 2005 along the coastlines of the Seto Inland Sea, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, some species of toxic phytoplankton were isolated from the eastern coasts, Bingo-Nada, the central regions of the Seto Inland Sea. It was rather unexpectedly revealed from the basis of the morphological characteristics that they were unambiguously identified as Alexandrium tamiyavanichii and Alexandrium catenella. Two strains (ATY041106, ATY051018) of A. tamiyavanichii showed a specific toxicity of 38.7 x 10(-6) and 111.5 x 10(-6)MU/cell, respectively. These values seemed to be several times or much higher than that of A. catenella (AC030816, AC040614), having a specific toxicity of 4.5 x 10(-6) and 4.1 x 10(-6)MU/cell, respectively, isolated in the same area. From the results of HPLC-furuorometric analysis, it revealed that the toxins in ATY041106 exist almost exclusively as beta-epimers (C2, GTX3, GTX4), which accounted for 72.7 mol%. The toxin profiles of this strain are featured by the presence of a large amount of GTX3 (59.1 mol%) and a small amount (20.6%) of C1 and 2 in comparison with the PSP compositions of A. tamarense, which is isolated as the main responsible species in Hiroshima Bay, a western part of coastal sea in Hiroshima Prefecture. On the other hand, it revealed that the toxin profiles of two strains (AC030816, AC040614) of A. catenella exist almost exclusively as beta-epimers (C2, GTX3, GTX4), which accounted for 81.8 and 56.5 mol%, as the same manner. The toxin profiles of these two strains are featured by the presence of a large amount of C2 (80.5 and 46.3 mol%) in comparison with the PSP compositions of A. tamiyavanichii. To our knowledge, this is the first record to show the distribution and harmful influence of A. tamiyavanichii and A. catenella in Bingo-Nada in Hiroshima Prefecture. Though contamination of bivalves with these PSP-producing planktons in this area has not occurred yet so far, attention should be paid to this species as well as the other causative dinoflagellate from the stand point of public health and food hygiene. 相似文献

To investigate the evolution of any processes on planetary surfaces in the outer Solar System, the rheological properties of non-water ices were studied by means of a sound velocity measurement system and a uniaxial deformation apparatus. A pulse transmission method was used to obtain longitudinal (Vp) and transverse (Vs) wave velocities through solid nitrogen and methane at temperatures ranging from 5 to 64 K and from 5 to 90 K, respectively. The measured velocities confirmed that the solid methane and solid nitrogen samples were non-porous polycrystalline samples without any cracks and bubbles inside. Compression tests at constant strain-rate were performed for solid nitrogen and methane at temperatures of 5-56 K and 5-77 K, respectively, at strain-rates of 10−4-10−2 s−1. Both brittle and ductile behavior was observed for solid nitrogen and methane under these conditions. The maximum strength of solid nitrogen was observed to be 9 MPa in the brittle failure mode, and that of solid methane was 10 MPa. These low strengths cannot support cantaloupe structures with the topographic undulation larger than several kilometers found on Triton’s surface, suggesting that other materials such as H2O ice could underlay solid methane and nitrogen and support these structures. 相似文献

Instantaneous flow structures “within” a cubical canopy are investigated via large-eddy simulation. The main topics of interest
are, (1) large-scale coherent flow structures within a cubical canopy, (2) how the structures are coupled with the turbulent
organized structures (TOS) above them, and (3) the classification and quantification of representative instantaneous flow
patterns within a street canyon in relation to the coherent structures. We use a large numerical domain (2,560 m × 2,560 m ×
1,710 m) with a fine spatial resolution (2.5 m), thereby simulating a complete daytime atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), as
well as explicitly resolving a regular array of cubes (40 m in height) at the surface. A typical urban ABL is numerically
modelled. In this situation, the constant heat supply from roof and floor surfaces sustains a convective mixed layer as a
whole, but strong wind shear near the canopy top maintains the surface layer nearly neutral. The results reveal large coherent
structures in both the velocity and temperature fields “within” the canopy layer. These structures are much larger than the
cubes, and their shapes and locations are shown to be closely related to the TOS above them. We classify the instantaneous
flow patterns in a cavity, specifically focusing on two characteristic flow patterns: flushing and cavity-eddy events. Flushing
indicates a strong upward motion, while a cavity eddy is characterized by a dominant vortical motion within a single cavity.
Flushing is clearly correlated with the TOS above, occurring frequently beneath low-momentum streaks. The instantaneous momentum
and heat transport within and above a cavity due to flushing and cavity-eddy events are also quantified. 相似文献

To preserve consistency among developed emission scenarios, the scenarios used in climate modeling, and the climate scenarios
available for impact research, the pattern scaling technique is useful technique. The basic assumption of pattern scaling
is that the spatial response pattern per 1 K increase in the global mean surface air temperature (SAT) (scaling pattern) is
the same among emission scenarios, but this assumption requires further validation. We therefore investigated the dependence
of the scaling pattern of the annual mean SAT on GHGs emission scenarios of representative concentration pathways (RCP) and
the causes of that dependence using the Model for Interdisciplinary research on Climate 5 developed by Japanese research community.
In particular, we focused on the relationships of the dependency with effects of aerosols and Atlantic meridional overturning
circulation. We found significant dependencies of the scaling pattern on emission scenarios at middle and high latitudes of
the Northern Hemisphere, with differences of >15 % over parts of East Asia, North America, and Europe. Impact researchers
should take into account those dependencies that seriously affect their research. The mid-latitude dependence is caused by
differences in sulfate aerosol emissions per 1 K increase in the global mean SAT, and the high-latitude dependence is mainly
caused by nonlinear responses of sea ice and ocean heat transport to global warming. Long-term trends in land-use and land-cover
changes did not significantly affect the scaling pattern of annual mean SAT, but they might have an effect at different timescales. 相似文献
