Recent sediments from Tanner Basin (off southern California) and Bandaras Bay (in Gulf of California) have been analyzed for normal, isoprenoid and steroidal alcohols using chromatographic (column, GLC, TLC), and spectroscopic (u.v., i.r., MS) methods, prior to and after heat-treatment (from 65 to 150°C). Normal saturated alcohols (C14-C24) and monounsaturated alcohols (C22-C24) were identified, as well as the isoprenoid alcohols, phytol and dihydrophytol.Two series of sterols (Δ5 and Δ7) were found in Tanner Basin, and Δ5-sterols and triterpenes, in Bandaras Bay sediment. Sterols from both sediments contained the corresponding stanols.  相似文献

Particulate matter was collected during September–October, 1977, in particle traps suspended 30–60 m above the floor of San Nicolas, Santa Barbara, Santa Monica and San Pedro Basins, off the coast of southern California. The trap particulates were analyzed for C15–C35 hydrocarbons using gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry. Kerogens and humic acids were characterized by H/C, N/C, δ13C, δ15N and δ34S ratios, and by electron-spin resonance. Hydrocarbons arising from fresh and weathered petroleum, marine autochthonous and terrestrial sources were identified. The rates of petroleum deposition during the collection period followed the order: San Nicolas Basin < Santa Barbara Basin ~ Santa Monica Basin < San Pedro Basin, with the largest amount of weathered petroleum being deposited in San Pedro Basin. The rates of petroleum deposition are correlated more strongly with human activities such as shipping, and the discharge of municipal and industrial wastes, than with natural submarine oil seepage. Analyses of kerogens and humic acids indicate that the majority of the organic matter in the trap particulates is of marine origin. The water column overlying Santa Barbara Basin appears to have the highest marine productivity of the four basins studied.  相似文献

Growing and resting cell suspensions of Baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) were permitted to metabolize sulfite and sulfate under a variety of environmental conditions. Enrichment of S32 in the H2S released during reduction of sulfate under growing conditions was consistently lower (δS34 < ?25%.) than enrichment during reduction of sulfite under similar conditions (δS34 ~ ?30 to ?50%.). Yeast cells harvested from a sulfite medium released small quantities of H2S when suspended in glucose-sulfate solution; cells from a sulfate growth medium did not. The enrichment of H2S in S32 by sulfite-grown resting cells suspended in either SO2?4 or SO2?3 solutions was about 10%.in less than the maximum obtained during growth on sulfite. Isotopic fractionation was always significantly less in assimilated, than in dissimilated sulfur.  相似文献

The Goutte d'Or neighborhood of Paris has long been seen as an impoverished yet colorful quarter of the city. In recent years, it has also developed a reputation as a center for immigrants. Three populations now share the neighborhood: the European French, the Maghrebi immigrant population and their children, and the newest population of migrants from former Francophone colonies. This paper examines how the Goutte d'Or's social and ethnic identity is revealed in the built environment and in its social and economic activity. This neighborhood demonstrates how different communities and place identities coexist. It also shows how global networks of migration, exchange, and visits infuse local places. The Goutte d'Or distills many aspects of French immigrant identities, providing an example for increasing numbers of immigrant neighborhoods in France and across the world.  相似文献

It is usually assumed that the ions of cosmic rays contribute nothing to the observable electromagnetic radiation. However, this is true only when these ions are moving in a vacuum or a quiet (nonturbulent) plasma. In the case of fast ions in a turbulent plasma, there is an effective nonlinear mechanism of radiation which is discussed in this paper. The fast ion (relativistic or nonrelativistic) moving in the plasma creates a polarization cloud around itself which also moves with the particles. The turbulent plasma waves may scatter on the moving electric field of this polarization cloud. In the process of this scattering an electromagnetic wave with frequency (2.7) is generated. Let 1 and k1 be the frequency and wave vector of turbulent plasma waves,V is the velocity of the ion, and is the angle between the wave vector of electromagnetic radiation and the direction of the ion velocity. The method of calculating the probability of the conversion of plasma waves (k1) into electromagnetic waves (k) by scattering on an ion with velocityV is described in detal in Section 2 (Equation (2.14)).The spectral coefficients of spontaneous radiation in the case of scattering of plasma waves on polarization clouds created by fast nonrelativistic ions are given in (3.6) for an ion energy distribution function (3.4) and in (3.8) for more general evaluations. The Equations (3.9)–(3.13) describe the spectral coefficients of spontaneous emission for different modes of plasma turbulence (Langmuir (3.9), electron cyclotron in a weak (3.10) or strong (3.11) magnetic field and ion acoustic (3.12)–(3.13) waves). The coefficients of reabsorption or induced emission are given by Equations (3.14) and (3.16)–(3.19). There is a maser effect in the case of scattering of plasma waves on a stream of ions. The effective temperature of the spontaneous emission is given by Equation (3.15). The spectral coefficients of radiation due to scattering of plasma waves on relativistic ions are calculated in the same manner (Equations (4.14)–(4.15)). The total energy loss due to this radiation is given in Equations (4.23)–(4.25). The coefficients of induced emission are given in (4.26)–(4.28).The results are discussed in Section 5. It is shown that the loss of energy by nonlinear plasma radiation is much smaller than the ionization loss. However, the coefficients of synchrotron radiation of electrons and nonlinear radiation of ions under cosmic conditions may be comparable in the case of a weak magnetic field and fairly low frequencies (5.5)–(5.6). Usually the spectrum of nonlinear plasma radiation is steeper than in the case of synchroton radiation. Sediment cores were taken from the Gulf of California, and pore waters recovered by mechanical squeezing. The chemistry and isotopic abundance of sulfur in these pore fluids were compared with coexisting solid phases to deduce the mechanisms involved in pyrite formation. The results suggest that burrowing activities of benthonic organisms supply sulfate sulfur to sediments to depths of approximately 0.5 m from the surface. This is inferred from essentially constant pore water concentration profiles of dissolved ions in horizons where sulfate reduction is demonstrated by the presence of iron sulfides.For a core from Pescadero Basin, it is estimated that beneath the mixed zone, diffusion adds 0.4% sulfur by dry weight of sediment, whereas burial of sulfate adds less than 0.1% sulfur. It is shown that diffusion can add isotopically light sulfur to sediments, due to more rapid relative addition of 32SO42? compared to 34SO42? down a concentration gradient maintained by bacterial processes. The overall net isotopic value of the sulfate so added is δ34S = ?4.5‰. The depth distribution of S-isotope in sulfur is controlled by the balance between a bacterial kinetic isotope effect preferentially removing 32S relative to 34S, and the supply of sulfate by diffusion. The isotopic fractionation factor, α, calculated by a mathematical formulation which takes diffusion into account, is larger (1.060±0.010) than when sulfate reduction is assumed to occur in a closed system (1.035). The larger value is supported by the sulfur isotope distribution in metastable iron sulfide. Essentially, the same open-system α was calculated for a core from Carmen Basin.  相似文献

The importance of interstitial pore water as a vehicle for transport of dissolved ions between sediment at depth and the overlying ocean reservoir may be overestimated. The major cause of this overestimation is the assumption that the rate of ionic diffusion through the sediment is of a similar magnitude to the rate of reaction occurring within the sediment column. Examples are given to indicate that the above assumption may not be correct, at least for diagenetic sulfate reduction. Closed-system modeling, although approximate, is shown to be consistent, both qualitatively and isotopically, with measured changes that are observed for several sedimentary environments.  相似文献

The weak thermal emission from the largest minor planets can be detected and measured at all points around their orbits at microwave frequencies using the Very Large Array (VLA). Position determinations of astrometric quality have been obtained, and flux measurements have provided size estimates. When enough precise positional observations have been accumulated, the orbits of the minor planets and the Earth can be determined. This will allow the equinox to be located within the radio reference frame, providing a truly fundamental coordinate system for radio source positions.
