Solid polar stratospheric cloud (PSC) layers observed by lidar and a balloon-borne optical particle counter (OPC) on 17 December 1995 are reexamined in a comparative analysis framework. The typical radius of solid particles in the observed PSC is determined through the comparative analysis to have been approximately 2.3 μm. A backward trajectory analysis for the air mass in which the solid particles were observed shows that the air mass had experienced temperatures 2–3 K below the frost point of nitric acid tri-hydrate (NAT) during the 4 days preceding the observations. The back-trajectory analysis traces the air mass back to northern Greenland and Ellesmere Island on 16 December, one day before the observations. A microphysical box model is used to investigate possible mechanisms of formation for the observed solid particles. The results of this model suggest that the solid particles formed under mesoscale temperature fluctuations associated with mountain lee wave activity induced by the relatively high terrestrial elevations of northern Greenland and Ellesmere Island. 相似文献

To comprehensively understand the Arctic and Antarctic upper atmosphere, it is often crucial to analyze various data that are obtained from many regions. Infrastructure that promotes such interdisciplinary studies on the upper atmosphere has been developed by a Japanese inter-university project called the Inter-university Upper atmosphere Global Observation Network (1UGONET). The objective of this paper is to describe the infrastructure and tools developed by IUGONET. We focus on the data analysis software. It is written in Interactive Data Language (IDL) and is a plug-in for the THEMIS Data Analysis Software suite (TDAS), which is a set of IDL libraries used to visualize and analyze satellite- and ground-based data. We present plots of upper atmospheric data provided by IUGONET as examples of applications, and verify the usefulness of the software in the study of polar science. We discuss IUGONET's new and unique developments, i.e., an executable file of TDAS that can run on the IDL Virtual Machine, IDL routines to retrieve metadata from the IUGONET database, and an archive of 3-D simulation data that uses the Common Data Format so that it can easily be used with TDAS. 相似文献

Numerical Investigations of Mean Winds Within Canopies of Regularly Arrayed Cubical Buildings Under Neutral Stability Conditions 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Recently, several attempts have been made to model the wind velocity in an urban canopy in order to accurately predict the
mixing and transport of momentum, heat, and pollutants within and above the canopy on an urban scale. For this purpose, unverified
assumptions made by Macdonald (Boundary-Layer Meteorol 97:25–45, 2000) to develop a model for the profile of the mean wind
velocity within an urban canopy have been used. In the present study, in order to provide foundations for improving the urban
canopy models, the properties of the spatially-averaged mean quantities used to make these assumptions have been investigated
by performing large-eddy simulations (LES) of the airflow around square and staggered arrays of cubical blocks with the following
plan area densities: λ
p
= 0.05, 0.11, 0.16, 0.20, 0.25, and 0.33. The LES results confirm that the discrepancy between the spatial average of wind
velocity and Macdonald’s five-point average of wind velocity can be large in both types of arrays for large λ
p
. It is also confirmed that Prandtl’s mixing length varies significantly with height within the canopy, contrary to Macdonald’s
assumption for both types of arrays and for both small and large λ
p
. On the other hand, in accordance with Macdonald’s assumption, the sectional drag coefficient is found to be almost constant
with height except in the case of staggered arrays with high λ
p
. 相似文献

Balloon-borne aerosol measurements were performed with an optical particle counter between 1994 and 2000 at Ny-Ålesund (79°N), Svarbard. Throughout the observation period, continuous decay was found in the concentrations of particles with 0.4–0.6 μm in radius in the Arctic stratosphere, suggesting that Pinatubo aerosols remained even at the end of the 1990s. The decay rate was clearly higher for larger particle sizes, and higher at higher altitude (e-folding time of 970–526 days), suggesting a gravitational sedimentation effect. For smaller particles with R<0.4 μm, slight increases in concentration with time were found, which agreed with the measurements at mid-latitude. The sulfate mass mixing ratio in the Arctic stratosphere before 1998 showed values higher than those at middle latitude, while values were almost the same in both regions after 1998. A possible explanation of the latitudinal difference is a time lag (of 0.5–1 year) in the arrival of Pinatubo aerosols in the Arctic. 相似文献
