Toxic and carcinogenic effects of arsenic in drinking water continue to impact people throughout the world and arsenic remains common in groundwater at cleanup sites and in areas with natural sources. Advances in groundwater remediation are needed to attain the low concentrations that are protective of human health and the environment. In this article, we present the successful use of a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) utilizing sulfate reduction coupled with zero‐valent iron (ZVI) to remediate the leading edge of a dissolved arsenic plume in a wetland area near Tacoma, Washington. A commercially available product (EHC‐M®, Adventus Americas Inc., Freeport, Illinois) that contains ZVI, organic carbon substrate, and sulfate was injected into a reducing, low‐seepage‐velocity aquifer elevated in dissolved arsenic and iron from a nearby, slag‐containing landfill. Removal effectiveness was strongly correlated with sulfate concentration, and was coincident with temporary redox potential (Eh) reductions, consistent with arsenic removal by iron sulfide precipitation. The PRB demonstrates that induced sulfate reduction and ZVI are capable of attaining a regulatory limit of 5 µg/L total arsenic, capturing of 97% of the arsenic entering the PRB, and sustaining decreased arsenic concentrations for approximately 2 years, suggesting that the technology is appropriate for consideration at other sites with similar hydrogeochemical conditions. The results indicate the importance of delivery and longevity of minimum sulfate concentrations and of maintaining sufficient dissolved organic carbon and/or microscale ZVI to precipitate FeS, a precursor phase to arsenic‐bearing pyrite that may provide a stable, long‐term sink for arsenic. 相似文献

Terminal ballistics of concrete is of extreme importance to the military and civil communities. Over the past few decades, ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) has been developed for various applications in the design of protective structures because UHPC has an enhanced ballistic resistance over conventional strength concrete. Developing predictive numerical models of UHPC subjected to penetration is critical in understanding the material's enhanced performance. This study employs the advanced fundamental concrete (AFC) model, and it will run inside the reproducing kernel particle method (RKPM)-based code known as the nonlinear meshfree analysis program (NMAP). NMAP is advantageous for modeling impact and penetration problems that exhibit extreme deformation and material fragmentation. A comprehensive experimental study was conducted to characterize the UHPC. The investigation consisted of fracture toughness testing, the utilization of nondestructive microcomputed tomography analysis, and lastly projectile penetration shots on the UHPC targets. To improve the accuracy of the model, a new scaled damage evolution law (SDEL) is employed within the microcrack informed damage model. During the homogenized macroscopic calculation, the corresponding microscopic cell needs to be dimensionally equivalent to the mesh dimension when the partial differential equation becomes ill posed and strain softening ensues. To ensure arbitrary mesh geometry for which the homogenized stress-strain curves are derived, a size scaling law is incorporated into the homogenized tensile damage evolution law. This ensures energy-bridging equivalence of the microscopic cell to the homogenized medium irrespective of arbitrary mesh geometry. If the photon possessed an electric charge or a magnetic moment, light waves propagating through magnetic fields would acquire new quantum mechanical phases. For a charged photon, this is an Aharonov–Bohm phase, and the fact that we can resolve distant galaxies using radio interferometry indicates that this phase must be small. This in turn constrains the photon charge to be smaller that if all photons have the same charge and smaller than if there are both positively and negatively charged photons. The best bound on the magnetic moment comes from the observed absence of wavelength-independent photon birefringence. Birefringence measurements, which compare the relative phases of right- and left-circularly polarized waves, restrict the magnetic moment to be less than . Images returned by the MESSENGER spacecraft from the Mercury flybys have been examined to search for anomalous high-albedo markings similar to lunar swirls. Several features suggested to be swirls on the basis of Mariner 10 imaging (in the craters Handel and Lermontov) are seen in higher-resolution MESSENGER images to lack the characteristic morphology of lunar swirls. Although antipodes of large impact basins on the Moon are correlated with swirls, the antipodes of the large impact basins on Mercury appear to lack unusual albedo markings. The antipodes of Mercury’s Rembrandt, Beethoven, and Tolstoj basins do not have surface textures similar to the “hilly and lineated” terrain found at the Caloris antipode, possibly because these three impacts were too small to produce obvious surface disturbances at their antipodes. Mercury does have a class of unusual high-reflectance features, the bright crater-floor deposits (BCFDs). However, the BCFDs are spectral outliers, not simply optically immature material, which implies the presence of material with an unusual composition or physical state. The BCFDs are thus not analogs to the lunar swirls. We suggest that the lack of lunar-type swirls on Mercury supports models for the formation of lunar swirls that invoke interaction between the solar wind and crustal magnetic anomalies (i.e., the solar-wind standoff model and the electrostatic dust-transport model) rather than those models of swirl formation that relate to cometary impact phenomena. If the solar-wind standoff hypothesis for lunar swirls is correct, it implies that the primary agent responsible for the optical effects of space weathering on the Moon is solar-wind ion bombardment rather than micrometeoroid impact. 相似文献

A feature of the pre-European landscape of the sub-tropical Richmond River district of north-eastern New South Wales was a large expanse of rainforest known as the Big Scrub. In and around the Big Scrub were small patches of grassland and grassy open-forest, known locally as 'grasses'. These were often given individual names, which indicated their importance in the early timber-based economy of this generally grassless district for camping and depasturing working stock. Historical records enable a reconstruction of the distribution of 56 named 'grasses', and also allow some inferences to be made about their botany and ecology. The 'grasses' appear to be natural features of the landscape, mainly relict areas following invasion of the late Pleistocene open-forest vegetation by rainforest, following sea level rise, during the Holocene. A toponymic study of the use of the term 'grass' in the Richmond River district is also included. 相似文献

The base of the Late Devonian–Early Carboniferous Drummond Basin, a major backarc extensional feature in eastern Australia which formed in response to detachment faulting, is extensively exposed in central Queensland. Here a crystalline basin floor is overlain by the Silver Hills Volcanics, a synrift sequence of predominantly silicic ash flow tuffs and lavas ranging to over 2 km in thickness. Detailed mapping of faults and stratigraphic logging of thickness changes within the Silver Hills Volcanics have allowed the rift-phase structural architecture that accompanied initial subsidence near the basin margin to be resolved. A complex mosaic of block faults with throws of up to 1 km is indicated. Locally developed mosaics may conform to, or depart from, the configuration predicted by the detachment faulting model. Structural fabric of the basement was a critical determinant of the extensional geometry. Distributed shear along pre-existing penetrative planar fabrics is considered to have accommodated hangingwall extension at lower strain rates whereas the propagation of tension fractures and the development of block faults by failure on pre-existing, brittle, basement dislocations facilitated extension at higher strain rates. The detachment fault inferred to lie beneath the extended hangingwall carapace has not been mapped at the surface and is thought to dissipate into a broad zone of distributed shear within basement to the east of the basin. Volcanism coincided with the initiation of extensional movements at which time deep crustal repositories for evolved magma were tapped by extensional fractures. The main extensional faults cutting the basinal succession were not used as conduits for magmatic products which were sourced from the basin margin and from extended hinterland to the east. 相似文献

Recent data suggest that the source region of mare basalts became compositionally closed at 4.42 Gy. presumably some 170 My. after the Moon accreted. Thermal-history models indicate that the outer part of the Moon could not have cooled to temperatures low enough to cause closure unless only the outer few hundred kilometers were initially molten. A total early lunar differentiation is therefore prohibited. The bulk of the Moon was therefore pristine and undifferentiated at the time of mare basalt formation. bl 相似文献
