Observations of photons at E ≥ 550 GeV from the Crab Nebula are presented and used to assess the potential of multi-telescope systems for γ-ray astronomy.

The Whipple observatory 10 m and 8 m imaging atmospheric erenkov telescopes have been used to provide a stereoscopic view of air showers to make a more complete measurement of air shower parameters. Here we present a measurement of the spread in the arrival direction of primary γ-rays originating from a point source. The data show that the shower arrival direction can be reconstructed with an accuracy of σ = 0.°14.  相似文献

A search for gravitational waves from the millisecond pulsar PSR 0437-4715 has been initiated using the bar detector NIOBE which is located at the University of Western Australia. We present a detailed report on the data analysis algorithm, called phase plane rotation , which will be used in this search. A discussion of the actual implementation of the algorithm is presented. The data analysis algorithm mentioned above has the advantage that it requires minimal changes to the already-existing data acquisition facility of NIOBE but, at the same time, it is as efficient as optimal filtering in detecting a signal. This search involves a very long coherent integration of the bar output which may stretch over a few years. With some planned improvements in the detector, a three-year integration should be able to put an upper limit of h  ∼ 10−26 on the signal amplitude.  相似文献

A simplified D-region model consisting of O2+, NO+ and their respective cluster ions grouped as Zo2+ and ZNO+ is used to reproduce the available rocket data on positive ion relative composition and effective clustering rates for the height range 70–90 km. The results of this analysis for a winter anomalous day (Sardinia, 40°N) are in good agreement with the presently known ideas on NO densities, O2+ production rates, mesospheric temperature, negative ion to electron density ratio and effective loss coefficient for electrons. Mesospheric nitric oxide density and temperature profiles from this study are in excellent agreement with the findings of Zbinden et al. (1975) and Hidalgo (1977) for the anomalous day at Sardinia.  相似文献

A new map of structural architecture has been compiled involving modern mapping techniques at the cratonmobile belt interface in the Western Ghats around the Coorg granulite massif revealing the occurrence of important shear zones. The shear zones are linked to the Moyar-Bhavani Shear Zone in Southern India. The nature, geometry and kinematics of the shear zones in the granulitic crust and the cratonic part are distinctly different.  相似文献

The disastrous Mw 9.3(seismic moment 1.0×1030 dyn/cm) earthquake that struck northwest Sumatra on 26 December 2004 and triggered~30 m high tsunami has rejuvenated the quest for identifying the forcing behind subduction related earthquakes around the world.Studies reveal that the strongest part(elastic core) of the oceanic lithosphere lie between 20 and 60 km depth beneath the upper (~7 km thick) crustal layer,and compressive stress of GPa order is required to fail the rock-layers within the core zone.Here we present evidences in favor of an intraplate origin of mega-earthquakes right within the strong core part(at the interface of semi-brittle and brittle zone),and propose an alternate model exploring the flexing zone of the descending lithosphere as the nodal area for major stress accumulation. We believe that at high confining pressure and elevated temperature,unidirectional cyclic compressive stress loading in the flexing zone results in an increase of material yield strength through strain hardening, which transforms the rheology of the layer from semi-brittle to near-brittle state.The increased compressive stress field coupled with upward migration of the neutral surface(of zero stress fields) under noncoaxial deformation triggers shear crack.The growth of the shear crack is initially confined in the near-brittle domain,and propagates later through the more brittle crustal part of the descending oceanic lithosphere in the form of cataclastic failure.  相似文献
