We present X-ray/ γ -ray spectra of Cyg X-1 observed during the transition from the hard to the soft state and in the soft state by ASCA , RXTE and CGRO /OSSE in 1996 May and June. The spectra consist of a dominant soft component below ∼2 keV and a power-law-like continuum extending to at least ∼800 keV. We interpret them as emission from an optically thick, cold accretion disc and from an optically thin, non-thermal corona above the disc. A fraction f ≳0.5 of total available power is dissipated in the corona.
We model the soft component by multicolour blackbody disc emission taking into account the torque-free inner-boundary condition. If the disc extends down to the minimum stable orbit, the ASCA RXTE data yield the most probable black hole mass of M X≈10 M and an accretion rate,     , locating Cyg X-1 in the soft state in the upper part of the stable, gas-pressure-dominated, accretion-disc solution branch.
The spectrum of the corona is well modelled by repeated Compton scattering of seed photons from the disc off electrons with a hybrid, thermal/non-thermal distribution. The electron distribution can be characterized by a Maxwellian with an equilibrium temperature of kT e∼30–50 keV, a Thomson optical depth of τ ∼0.3 and a quasi-power-law tail. The compactness of the corona is 2≲ℓh≲7, and a presence of a significant population of electron–positron pairs is ruled out.
We find strong signatures of Compton reflection from a cold and ionized medium, presumably an accretion disc, with an apparent reflector solid angle, Ω/2π∼0.5–0.7. The reflected continuum is accompanied by a broad iron K α line.  相似文献

A detailed structural glaciological study carried out on Kvíárjökull in SE Iceland reveals that recent flow within this maritime glacier is concentrated within a narrow corridor located along its central axis. This active corridor is responsible for feeding ice from the accumulation zone on the south‐eastern side of Öræfajökull to the lower reaches of the glacier and resulted in a c. 200 m advance during the winter of 2013–2014 and the formation of a push‐moraine. The corridor comprises a series of lobes linked by a laterally continuous zone of highly fractured ice characterised by prominent flow‐parallel crevasses, separated by shear zones. The lobes form highly crevassed topographic highs on the glacier surface and occur immediately down‐ice of marked constrictions caused by prominent bedrock outcrops located on the northern side of the glacier. Close to the frontal margin of Kvíárjökull, the southern side of the glacier is relatively smooth and pock‐marked by a number of large moulins. The boundary between this slow moving ice and the active corridor is marked by a number of ice flow‐parallel strike‐slip faults and a prominent dextral shear zone which resulted in the clockwise rotation and dissection of an ice‐cored esker exposed on the glacier surface. It is suggested that this concentrated style of glacier flow identified within Kvíárjökull has affinities with the individual flow units which operate within pulsing or surging glaciers. © 2017 The Authors Earth Surface Processes and Landforms © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Exact cylindrically-symmetric solutions of Sen equations both with and without the source term in Lyra geometry are presented. It is found that the exterior vacuum solution, when continuously joined to the interior solution describing the uniform density cylinder of finite radius, may represent a cosmic string. The rate of light deflection that is independent of the impact parameter suggests that the solution has the gravitational lensing property, and for typical values of the linear mass density it yields predictions similar to general relativity.  相似文献

Physical evolution of Jupiter family (JF) comets is considered as a simultaneous process of erosion and fading. Dynamical effects are limited to discrete changes of the perihelion distance, that result in changes of the evaporation rate. Assuming that the JF comet population is in a steady state, a distribution function of this population in the two dimensional phase space consisting of radius and active fraction of the nucleus surface is found as the solution of a set of kinetic equations, each one of them for a different perihelion distance. With use of the distribution function some statistical properties of the comet population, like the total number of comets in the considered region of the phase space, the number of objects that evaporate or get dormant per unit time, etc., are obtained. The cumulative distribution function with respect to the absolute brightness is calculated and compared with the observed one as a check on the considered models.  相似文献

Multicolour photometry of the polar AM Her was obtained during 3 observational seasons (1994/95/96). The star was in its high state for most of the observations. It was in its low state in '96 April. It was established that these two states differ not only in the average light level but in the larger amplitudes of variations at low state than at high state. Moreover the energy distributions of the two states differ in the stronger dependence of the flux on ν at high state than at low state. The Fourier analysis of the photometric data shows variability with the spectroscopic (orbital) period. The amplitudes of this variability in all colours are about two times bigger at low state than at high state. An attempt to explain the photometric behaviour of AM Her by a model of dominant emission of two hot spots at the magnetic poles of the white dwarf was made and the spot parameters were determined. Strontium isotope compositions of ancient sulphate deposits not only provide chemostratigraphic information but also offer insight into the system in which the evaporites precipitated. Primary gypsum from two Middle Miocene (Badenian) sections in southern Poland shows steadily higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios than those expected from a marine‐derived formation. The ratios are interpreted as the result of increasing inflow into the basin at the time of gypsum precipitation. Palaeogeographic reconstructions suggest that riverine runoff sources were situated in the West and East European platforms (to the north and east, respectively) and the Carpathians (to the south), which are mostly composed of Mesozoic sedimentary rocks; their dissolution cannot be responsible for the higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios recorded. We conclude that Archaean and Palaeoproterozoic igneous and supracrustal rocks of the Ukrainian Shield were the source of the higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios recorded in the Badenian primary gypsum. A distinctive decreasing trend of 87Sr/86Sr ratios from western Ukraine to southern Poland is explained by a consistent direction of brine inflow during gypsum crystallization (typical cyclonic circulation controlled by the Coriolis effect).  相似文献

Forty-four boulders from moraines in two glacial valleys of Mount Erciyes (38.53°N, 35.45°E, 3917 m), central Turkey, dated with cosmogenic chlorine-36 (36Cl), indicate four periods of glacial activity in the past 22 ka (1 ka = 1000 calendar years). Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) glaciers were the most extensive, reaching 6 km in length and descending to an altitude of 2150 m above sea level. These glaciers started retreating 21.3 ± 0.9 ka (1σ) ago. They readvanced and retreated by 14.6 ± 1.2 ka ago (Lateglacial), and again by 9.3 ± 0.5 ka ago (Early Holocene). The latest advance took place 3.8 ± 0.4 ka ago (Late Holocene). Using glacier modeling together with paleoclimate proxy data from the region, we reconstructed the paleoclimate at these four discrete times. The results show that LGM climate was 8–11 °C colder than today and moisture levels were somewhat similar to modern values, with a range between 20% more and 25% less than today. The analysis of Lateglacial advance suggests that the climate was colder by 4.5–6.4 °C based on up to 1.5 times wetter conditions. The Early Holocene was 2.1–4.9 °C colder and up to twice as wet as today, while the Late Holocene was 2.4–3 °C colder and its precipitation amounts approached to similar conditions as today. Our paleoclimate reconstructions show a general trend of warming for the last 22 ka, and an increase of moisture until Early Holocene, and a decrease after that time. The recent glacier terminates at 3450 m on the northwest side of the mountain. It is a remnant from the last advance (possibly during the Little Ice Age). Repeated measurements of glacier length between 1902 and 2008 reveal a retreat rate of 4.2 m per year, which corresponds to a warming rate of 0.9–1.2 °C per century.  相似文献
