We present the results of six BeppoSAX observations of 1ES 2344+514, five of which were taken within one week. 1ES 2344+514, one of the few known TeV BL Lac objects, was detected by the BeppoSAX Narrow Field Instruments (NFI) in the range 0.1 and ≈50 keV. During the first five closely spaced observations 1ES 2344+514 showed large-amplitude luminosity variability, associated with spectacular spectral changes: in particular, the last observation found the source to be several times fainter, with a much steeper X-ray spectrum . The energy-dependent shape of the light curve and the spectral changes both imply a large frequency shift (by a factor of 30 or more) of the peak of synchrotron emission. At maximum flux the peak was located at, or above, 10 keV, making 1ES 2344+514 the second blazar (after Mrk 501) to have a synchrotron peak in the hard X-ray band. The frequency shift, and the corresponding increase in luminosity, might be caused by the onset of a second synchrotron component extending from the soft to the hard X-ray band where most of the power is emitted. Rapid variability on a time-scale of approximately 5000 s has also been detected when the source was brightest.  相似文献

I present the search for V, R, I rapid optical variability of three gamma-ray loud blazars, 3C 454.3, 1ES 1959+650, 1ES 2344+514, performed at the Loiano telescope. The source 3C 454.3 was observed during the decline of the May 2005 outburst. 3C 454.3 and 1ES 2344$+$514 showed rapid variability in one band at least. The data in this work and archival data support the correlation between the occurrence of rapid variability and the flux variation suggested by Howard et~al., AJ 127, 17 (2004). OJ 287是存在着剧烈活动的低峰频BL Lac天体,其低频段的能谱与另两个TeV BL Lac天体(0716+714和BL Lacertae)在低频段的能谱很相似,但是切仑科夫望远镜却没能探测到它的TeV射线.利用这3个天体的观测数据,比较它们在22 GHz、37 GHz和B波段的最小光变周期及延迟的异同,进一步寻找没有观测到OJ 287的TeV伽马射线的可能原因.分析结果显示:(1)最小光变周期方面,OJ 287在37 GHz和B波段的周期偏小,在22 GHz,OJ 287与0716+714的结果相当,但与BL Lacertae相比要小很多,OJ 287的周期更短表明其活动性更强,却没有探测到来自OJ 287的TeV伽马射线,这表明OJ 287在TeV波段的辐射与这3个低能波段最小光变周期之间可能没有联系;(2)延迟方面,OJ 287在B波段相对于37 GHz的延迟要长于0716+714,短于BL Lacertae;在37 GHz相对于22 GHz的延迟要短于0716+714,而BL Lacertae在37 GHz相对于22 GHz的时延为负值,表明22 GHz要超前于37 GHz.通过对延迟的比较分析,并没有发现OJ 287与0716+714和BL Lacertae之间存在明显的差异;从能谱来看,很可能是由于OJ 287在TeV波段的能谱较陡造成切仑科夫望远镜没有探测到来自OJ 287的伽马辐射,但TeV能段较陡的能谱对低能段光变的影响目前还不是很清楚.  相似文献

Blazars are the subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) which includes the Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQ) and BL Lacertae (BL Lac) objects. Variability on the short- and long-time scale in all the wide energy ranges from radio up to gamma-ray emission is a special characteristic of blazars. Multi-wavelength studies of the flaring activity and variability of blazars can serve as a tool to probe the physical properties of the near the core regions and processes responsible for the observed features. 3C 454.3 is a bright FSRQ that is intensively studied through the wide range of electromagnetic spectrum. It has shown remarkably high activity since 2000. The long-term observations of 3C 454.3 at 800 GeV–100 TeV energies with the SHALON telescope were started in 1998 year. A number of activity periods were found. The most significant flaring state of 3C 454.3 at TeV energies was detected in the SHALON observational period of November–December 2010. This increase is correlated with the flares at a lower energy range in observations of Fermi-LAT. The direct association of the significant changes of gamma-ray flux with strong core radio flares are not clear but observed correlations and lags in multi-wavelength activity may point to the complexity of the emission processes in blazars connected with disturbance propagating in the jet.  相似文献

A kind of wavelet analysis method for identifying the light period of the BL Lac object S5 0716+714 is introduced. The rather complete observed data in the four optical wavebands B, V, R, I are collected, and the long-term light curves based on 10-day averaging are obtained. On these light curves, the periodicity analysis is performed by using a wavelet analysis method. The result demonstrates that the wavelet analysis method is preferable for searching and identifying the light periods of BL Lac objects. From the contour map of the real part of the wavelet transform coefficient, the periodical light variations of the BL Lac object S5 0716+714 can be precisely identified. By analyzing the wavelet variance curves at the 4 wavebands, it is found that the BL Lac Object S5 0716+174 has a stable light period of 1160 days. This result is consistent with the 3.3-year period given by Raiteri et al. It is predicted that the next outburst in this object will happen around the August of 2011.  相似文献

Photometric monitoring of 12 BL Lacertae objects   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We present the results of our monitoring the flux variability of 12 BL Lac objects, which have variabilities on time-scales ranging from hours to months. Individual sources are discussed in detail. Three of them, OY091,     and     , show significant rapid variation (hours). Two of them, 3C 66A and Mrk 501, exhibit significant variability on time-scales of months. We find that 3C 66A has a variability period of     , supporting the 65-d period obtained by Lainela et al. The periodicity seems to be weak according to the Jurkevich     test. We also find a correlation between     colour index and B magnitude for Mrk 421. We discuss possible physical mechanisms on the basis of these observational phenomena.  相似文献

Total intensity and polarization λ =6 cm Very Large Array (VLA) and global very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) images of the quasar 0917+624 and the BL Lacertae object 0954+658 (both at epoch 1991.43) are analysed. Integrated measurements using the VLA during the VLBI observations indicated that, although there were no substantial total intensity variations, there were significant polarization variations for both sources during the 24-h VLBI experiment. The VLBI data were divided into 2–3 h segments in order to try to identify corresponding rapid variability in the VLBI structure. This analysis revealed intraday variability (IDV) in the VLBI core of 0917+624: both the polarized flux and the polarization position angle varied substantially on time-scales of ∼5–10 h. There is evidence that the VLA polarization variations for 0954+658 occurred in an inner VLBI jet component, where the polarized flux varied by ∼30–40 per cent on time-scales of ∼2 h. 0917+624 and 0954+658 were observed together with 0716+714, an object that also displayed IDV in the polarized flux density measured during our experiment (analysed in a separate paper). These three sources were targeted for the VLBI observations since they had been previously identified as intraday variables, but we had no way of knowing whether they would vary during our observations. The fact that all three exhibited IDV in polarization (but not in total intensity) during our experiment suggests that polarization IDV occurs frequently in at least some IDV sources.  相似文献

The BL Lacertae object PKS 1413+135 is associated with a disc-dominated galaxy that heavily absorbs the BL Lac nucleus at optical and X-ray wavelengths. It has been argued whether this galaxy is actually the host galaxy of PKS 1413+135 or whether the BL Lac is a background QSO, gravitationally lensed by the apparent host galaxy. We have obtained deep high-resolution H -band images of this unusual BL Lac object using the UKIRT IRCAM3. Our observations show that the BL Lac nucleus is centred within 0.05 arcsec of the galaxy. Based on this result, we assess the probability for the lensing scenario and come to the conclusion that the disc galaxy is indeed the host of PKS 1413+135. The galaxy shows peanut-shaped isophotes, suggesting the presence of a central bar, which is a common feature of AGN.  相似文献

The data of light variations of six blazars with low peak frequencies (i.e., BL Lacerta, 0235+164, OQ530, 0716+714, 3C 345, and 3C 273) at 4.8, 8, 14.5, 22 and 37 GHz in the recent thirty years have been collected from immense amount of literature. By using the method of discrete correlation function the correlations and delays of the light curves of these six sources at the 5 wavebands are analyzed. With the method of structural function, the periods and timescales of the light variations of these six sources are analyzed, and their amplitudes of light variations are compared and analyzed. As revealed by the result of analysis, among the six blazars the amplitudes of light variations of 0716+714 and 0235+164 are relatively large, and those of 3C 345 and OQ 530 are less. The amplitudes of light variations of 3C 273 and BL Lacertae are relatively smaller. As shown by the multi-waveband analysis of delays between two neighboring wavebands, 0235+164 exhibits the tendency of variation that the high-frequency wavebands precede the low-frequency wavebands. On the whole, 3C 345 exhibits the tendency that the high-frequency wavebands lag be-hind the low-frequency wavebands. The analyses of the other blazars show that in a part of radio wavebands there appears the tendency of variation that the high-frequency waveband leads the low-frequency waveband. Yet in the other radio wavebands there appears the tendency that the high-frequency waveband lags behind the low-frequency waveband. As revealed by the results of analyses with the method of structural function, the timescale, fitted slope, and period of light variations of 3C 345 are larger than those of the other five blazars with low peak frequencies. This demonstrates that the activity of 3C 345 is comparatively weaker than the other five sources, and implies that in the interior of 3C 345 there may exist some physical processes which are different from those of the other five blazars with low peak frequencies.  相似文献

We analyze the spectral variability and spectral evolution in the optical energy region by using multiband (BVRI) optical observations of S5 0716+714 spanning 1994 to 2005. The spectrum hardens when the source becomes brighter, which is consistent with general BL Lac objects. The spectral evolution parameter implies that the spectral variability is small in optical bands over 10 years. The active galactic nuclei BL Lac, 3C66A, and Mk501, as well as the Crab nebula and the Cyg γ-2 source were observed in 2006 at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory using the GT-48 gamma-ray telescope. Very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray fluxes at a high confidence level (Q > 4) were detected from the active galactic nuclei and the Crab nebula. VHE gamma-ray fluxes from the unidentified gamma-ray source Cyg γ-2 and the X-ray source Cyg X-3 were recorded during observations of Cyg γ-2.  相似文献

Observations of several active galactic nuclei were performed with the GT-48 gamma-ray telescope at CrAO in 2004: 3C 66A, Mk 421, Mk 501, 1H 1426, 1ES 1959, and BL Lac. Very-high-energy (E ≥ 1012 eV) gamma-ray fluxes were recorded from 3C 66A, Mk 421, Mk 501, and 1H 1426 at a confidence level of more than 4σ. Upper limits for the flux of very-high-energy gamma rays are presented for 1ES 1959 and BL Lac. The 2004 observational data for 3C 66A (z = 0.44) confirm the results obtained previously at CrAO.  相似文献

Based on the log-parabolic spectral energy distribution of electrons, and the homogeneous one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model, the multiband spectral energy distribution of the BL Lac object S5 0716+714 is calculated. Compared with Paggi's result which is obtained by means of δ-function approximation, it is found that a certain difference exists between our result and Paggi's. The main reason leading to this difference may be that the δ-function approximation on the synchrotron radiation of a single electron loses a part of electron energy, and therefore affects the result of inverse Compton scattering. Applying this model to the results of the multi-band observations made at three different states of Mark 421: high, medium, and low, the results of theoretical calculations are coincident very well with the observational results under the three different states of the object. An analysis indicates that the observed different states of Mark 421 are probably caused by the variation of the electron distribution in the jet.  相似文献

The aim of our observations is to investigate the intranight variability properties and the spectral variability of BL Lacertae. 799 optical multiband observations were intensively made with the Beijing–Arizona–Taiwan–Connecticut (BATC) 60/90 cm Schmidt telescope during the outburst composed of two subsequent flares in 2005. The second flare, whose rising phase lasted at least 44 d, was observed with amplitudes of more than 1.1 mag in three BATC optical bands. In general, on intranight time-scale the amplitude of variability and the variation rate are larger at the shorter wavelength, and the variation rate is comparable in the rising and decaying phases within each band. A possible time-lag between the light curves in bands e and m , around 11.6 min, was obtained. Based on the analysis of the colour index variation with the source brightness, the variability of BL Lacertae can be interpreted as having two components: a 'strongly chromatic' intranight component and a 'mildly chromatic' internight component, which may be the results of both intrinsic physical mechanism and geometric effects.  相似文献

High brightness temperatures are a characteristic feature of IntraDay Variability (IDV) of extragalactic radio sources. Recent studies of the polarization properties of some IDV sources (e.g., 1150 812, PKS 0405-385 and 0716 714) have shown that these sources harbor several compact IDV components with angular sizes of -10-30/uas and very high polarizations (of up to -50%-70%). These results indicate the possibility of the existence of uniform magnetic fields in the IDV components. We investigate the incoherent synchrotron and self- Compton radiation of an anisotropic distribution of relativistic electrons which spin around the magnetic field lines at small pitch angles. The brightness temperature limit caused by second-order Compton losses is discussed and compared to the brightness temperatures derived from energy equipartition arguments. It is found that anisotropic distributions of electrons moving in ordered magnetic fields can raise the equipartition and Compton brightness temperatures by a factor of up to -3-5. This would remove some of the difficulties in the interpretation of extremely high intrinsic brightness temperatures of > 1012 K (or apparent brightness temperatures of - 1014 K with a Doppler factor of -30).  相似文献

In this paper, we have used optical intra-day variability archive data to calculate the central black hole masses and Eddington luminosities for nine blazars: 3C 66A, AO 0235+164, S5 0716+714, PKS 0735+178, OJ 287, 1215+303, 1216−010, 1308+326, PKS 1510−089, Mrk 501 and BL Lac using intra-day variability timescales and periodicity (if present). The calculated central black hole mass of these nine blazars using intra-day variability timescales are found to be in the range of 1.22-25.30 × 107 M and corresponding Eddington luminosity in the range of 1.58-32.88 × 1045 erg s−1. The black hole mass and Eddington luminosity are in the range of 0.32-31.23 × 108 M and 1.23-31.20 × 1046 erg s−1, respectively when optical Doppler factor is taken into account. The comparison show, our estimated values of black hole mass are consistent with earlier reported values. Periodicity were present in two blazars OJ 287 and 1216−010 which give the central black hole mass of these blazars in the range of 1.32-14.6 × 107 M and corresponding Eddington luminosity in the range of 1.60-19.0 × 1045 erg s−1, respectively.  相似文献

Rapid ('intraday') cm-wavelength variations in both total and polarized flux density have been observed in a number of strong extragalactic radio sources. It is difficult to explain these variations purely as propagation effects, but if they are intrinsic to the sources, implausibly high brightness temperatures are required. We discuss here rapid polarization variability during our λ =6 cm global very long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of the active galactic nucleus 0716+714. Measurements made with the Very Large Array (VLA) during the VLBI observations indicate a ≃50° swing in the position angle χ of the VLA core polarization in 12 hours. Corresponding variations were observed only for short VLBI baselines, so that they could not have occurred in the VLBI core (the only feature detected in our VLBI polarization map). The fact that the variations appear both in the VLA data and in the VLBI data for short baselines makes it difficult to explain them as instrumental effects. This leads us to conclude that the rapid variations occurred outside the area covered by our VLBI map; we estimate that the variability occurred in some compact feature roughly 25 milliarcseconds from the nucleus. It is clear that compact structures on a wide range of scales must be taken into account in studies of intraday variability in AGN.  相似文献
