The hydrodynamic equations for an ideal, inviscid, fully ionized hydrogen gas in a gravitational, but not magnetic, field are solved by an explicit Lax-Wendroff two-step technique using a one-dimensional slab symmetry. Radiation and thermal conductivity are included. The model spans 100000 km starting from the chromosphere-corona transition region. An initially isothermal gas is seen to evolve coronal properties in 4000 s, by which time it settles into dynamic equilibrium characterized by a 2000 km transition region, a temperature maximum of 1.6 × 106 K at a height of 60000 km, and a solar wind mass flux of 10-9 g cm-2 s-1.  相似文献

We find clear evidence for typical chromospheric evaporation associated with small transient brightenings, using the data from the X-ray Telescope (XRT) onboard Hinode. We found 13 events, each having a pair of evaporation upflows arising almost symmetrically from both foot points of a magnetic loop. These facts strongly support the standard flare model based on the magnetic reconnection. The apparent upflow velocities of three of the events are ≈?500?km?s?1, while those of the other events are ≈?100?km?s?1. This is the first clear direct detection of evaporating upflow motion in soft X-ray images from Hinode/XRT; such images were obtained with high cadence (≈?60?s) and high spatial resolution (1?arcsec).  相似文献

The existence of the dynamo region is identified in the atmosphere of Jupiter. It is found that the dynamo region extends from an altitude of 130 km (0.153 mbar) to 330 km (0.027 μbar) reckoned from zero altitude corresponding to 43.8 mbar pressure level. Physical features of the equatorial electrojet in the ionosphere of Jupiter are modelled in detail. The Jovian equatorial electrojet has a maximum eastward current density of about 1.5 Akm?2 at an altitude of 270km (0.33 μbar) with a latitudinal half width of about ±11°. The thickness of the equatorial half width is 100 km in altitude range. The type I instability in the electrojet can exist only if the electron streaming velocity exceeds the value of about 250 m s?1.  相似文献

From simultaneous filtergrams taken in opposite wings of the 6569.2 solar absorption line we derive the velocity profile of an average solar granule. We definitely established the existence of the horizontal outflow in a granule in addition to the vertical upflow at the granule center. The magnitude of this outflow is strongly dependent on the influence of instrumental and atmospheric smoothing and on the effective height in the solar atmosphere at which the velocity is measured. The maximum upflow (at the granule center) equals 0.4 km/sec, the maximum outflow (500 km from the granule center) equals 0.25 km/sec.Part of the research reported here was carried out while the author was at the High Altitude Observatory, Boulder, Colorado.  相似文献

The coupled H+ and O+ time-dependent continuity and momentum equations are solved within a region of the L = 3 magnetic flux tube lying between (and including) the F2-layers of conjugate hemispheres. The method of solution is an extended and modified version of the Murphy et al. (1976) method. The model is used to study the coupling between the F2-layers of conjugate hemispheres during magnetically quiet periods. The results of the calculations strongly indicate that the protonosphere acts as a reservoir, with variable H+ content, which prevents direct coupling between the F2-layers of conjugate hemispheres. However there is generally a significant interhemispheric flow of plasma. This flow is caused by conditions in the summer and winter topside ionospheres and it maintains continuity in the plasma concentration within the protonosphere. There are times when the direction of flow is from the winter hemisphere to the summer hemisphere. It is suggested that maintenance of the winter F2-layer at night is not assisted directly by the F2-layer of the conjugate summer hemisphere. It is shown that during the first few days of protonosphere replenishment after a magnetic storm there is an upflow of H+ in the topside ionosphere at all times in the summer hemisphere. There is also an upflow of H+ during the daytime in both hemispheres. A comparison with the results obtained when the interhemispheric H+ flux is held permanently at zero shows that both F2-layers are little affected by the interhemispheric H+ flux. Nevertheless both F2-layers are affected by the H+ tube content of the protonosphere. When the H+ flux at 1000 km in one hemisphere is much greater than the H+ flux at 1000 km in the conjugate hemisphere, there is a corresponding signature in the interhemispheric H+ flux. The results suggest that there is insufficient time between magnetic storms for complete replenishment of the protonosphere to occur.  相似文献

The boundary between the umbra and penumbra of a sunspot is consistently observed to be very sharp, on the order of 500 km. Approximating the sunspot as a static region in a homogeneous medium with a radiative surface, temperature distributions resulting from a variety of convective motions exterior to the sunspot are calculated. The calculations suggest that, for the exterior convection to produce the observed boundary, the maximum depth of the region of inhibited convection below a sunspot umbra is on the order of 103 km.  相似文献

Calculations of the steady-state photoelectron energy and angular distribution in the altitude region between 120 and 1000 km are presented. The distribution is found to be isotropic at all altitudes below 250 km, while above this altitude anisotropies in both pitch angle and energy are found. The isotropy found in the angular distribution below 250 km implies that photoelectron transport below 250 km is insignificant, while the angular anisotropy found above this altitude implies a net photoelectron current in the upward direction. The energy anisotropy above 500 km arises from the selective backscattering of the low energy photoelectron population of the upward flux component by Coulomb collisions with the ambient ions. The total photoelectron flux attains its maximum value between about 40 and 70 km above the altitude at which the photoelectron production rate is maximum. The displacement of the maximum of the equilibrium flux is attributed to an increasing (with altitude) photoelectron lifetime. Photoelectrons at altitudes above that where the flux is maximum are on the average more energetic than those below that altitude. The flux of photoelectrons escaping to the protonosphere at dawn was found to be 2.6 × 108 cm?2 sec?1, while the escaping flux at noon was found to be 1.5 × 108 cm?2 sec?1. The corresponding escaping energy fluxes are: 4.4 × 109 eV cm?2 sec?1 and 2.7 × 109 eV cm?2 sec?1.  相似文献

Several solar flares have been observed from their onset in C IV 1548.2 and 1–8 Å X-rays using instruments aboard OSO-8. In addition, microwave and H flare patrol data have been obtained for this study. The impulsive brightening in C IV is frequently accompanied by redshifts, interpreted as downflows, of the order of 80 km s-1. The maximum soft X-ray intensity usually arrives several minutes after the maximum C IV intensity. The most energetic C IV event studied shows a small blueshift just before reaching maximum intensity, and estimates of the mass flux associated with this upflow through the transition-zone are consistent with the increase of mass in the coronal loops as observed in soft X-rays. This event had no observable microwave burst, suggesting that electron beams did not play a major role in the chromospheric and transition-zone excitation. Lastly, our observations suggest that the frequent occurrence of violent dynamical processes at the onset of the flare are associated with the initial energy release mechanism.Currently at High Altitude Observatory, National Center for Atmospheric Research, P.O. If the solar dynamo operates at the bottom of the convection zone, then the magnetic flux created there has to rise to the surface. When the convection zone is regarded as passive, the rising flux is deflected by the Coriolis force to emerge at rather high latitudes, poleward of typical sunspot zones (Choudhuri and Gilman, 1987; Choudhuri, 1989). Choudhuri and D'Silva (1990) included the effects of convective turbulence on the rising flux through (a) giant cell drag and (b) momentum exchange by small-scale turbulence. The momentum exchange mechanism could enable flux tubes of radii not more than a few hundred km to emerge radially at low latitudes, but the giant cell drag mechanism required unrealistically small flux tube radii (a few meters for a reasonable giant cell upflow) to counteract the Coriolis force. We now include the additional effect of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in a symmetrical flux ring caused by the azimuthal flow induced during its rise. The azimuthal flow crosses the threshold for the instability only if there is a giant cell upflow to drag the flux tubes appreciably. In the absence of such a drag, as in the case of a passive convection zone or in the case of momentum exchange by small-scale turbulence, the azimuthal velocity never becomes large enough to cause the instability, leaving the results of the previous calculations unaltered. The giant cell drag, aided by Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, however, becomes now a viable mechanism for curbing the Coriolis force - 104 G flux tubes with radii of a few hundred km being dragged radially by upflows of 70 m s-1.  相似文献

A helical surge (S 72, W 90) was recorded by a monochromatic filter at the University Observatory of Istanbul. It is a significient one at a very high latitude and without any center of activity. A sequence of the filtergrams showed some condensed points from which the motions of the plasma are traced. Different velocities were determined on each of the branches of the helical surge during its evolution. The surge reached its maximum height of 298 000 km and the maximum velocity of this upper region was 250 km s–1.  相似文献

Seeking to establish whether active-region upflow material contributes to the slow solar wind, we examine in detail the plasma upflows from Active Region (AR) 10978, which crossed the Sun’s disc in the interval 8 to 16 December 2007 during Carrington rotation (CR) 2064. In previous work, using data from the Hinode/EUV Imaging Spectrometer, upflow velocity evolution was extensively studied as the region crossed the disc, while a linear force-free-field magnetic extrapolation was used to confirm aspects of the velocity evolution and to establish the presence of quasi-separatrix layers at the upflow source areas. The plasma properties, temperature, density, and first ionisation potential bias [FIP-bias] were measured with the spectrometer during the disc passage of the active region. Global potential-field source-surface (PFSS) models showed that AR 10978 was completely covered by the closed field of a helmet streamer that is part of the streamer belt. Therefore it is not clear how any of the upflowing AR-associated plasma could reach the source surface at 2.5 R and contribute to the slow solar wind. However, a detailed examination of solar-wind in-situ data obtained by the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft at the L1 point shows that increases in O7+/O6+, C6+/C5+, and Fe/O – a FIP-bias proxy – are present before the heliospheric current-sheet crossing. These increases, along with an accompanying reduction in proton velocity and an increase in density are characteristic of both AR and slow-solar-wind plasma. Finally, we describe a two-step reconnection process by which some of the upflowing plasma from the AR might reach the heliosphere.  相似文献

A physical model of the transition region, including upflow of the plasma in magnetic field funnels that are open to the overlying corona, is presented. A numerical study of the effects of Alfvén waves on the heating and acceleration of the nascent solar wind originating in the chromospheric network is carried out within the framework of a two-fluid model for the plasma. It is shown that waves with reasonable amplitudes can, through their pressure gradient together with the thermal pressure gradient, cause a substantial initial acceleration of the wind (on scales of a few Mm) to locally supersonic flows in the rapidly expanding magnetic field trunks of the transition region network. The concurrent proton heating is due to the energy supplied by cyclotron damping of the high-frequency Alfvén waves, which are assumed to be created through small-scale magnetic activity. The wave energy flux of the model is given as a condition at the upper chromosphere boundary, located above the thin layer where the first ionization of hydrogen takes place.Among the new numerical results are the following: Alfvén waves with an assumed f -1 power spectrum in the frequency range from 1 to 4 Hz, and with an integrated mean amplitude ranging between 25 and 75 km s4, can produce very fast acceleration and also heating through wave dissipation. This can heat the lower corona to a temperature of 5× 105 K at a height of h=12,000 km, starting from 5× 104 K at h=3000 km. The resulting thermal and wave pressure gradients can accelerate the wind to speeds of up to 150 km s-1 at h=12,000 km, starting from 20 km s-1 at h=3000 km in a rapidly diverging flux tube. Thus the nascent solar wind becomes supersonic at heights well below the classical Parker-Type sonic point. This is a consequence of the fact that any large wave-energy flux, if it is to be conducted through the expanding funnel to the corona, implies the building-up of an associated wave-pressure gradient. Because of the diverging field geometry, this might lead to a strong initial acceleration of the flow. There is a multiplicity of solutions, depending mainly on the coronal pressure. Here we discuss two new (as compared with a static transition region model) possibilities, namely that either the flow remains supersonic or slows down abruptly by shock formation, which then yields substantial coronal heating up to the canonical 106 K for the proton temperature.  相似文献

Two coherently related radio signals transmitted from Voyager 1 at wavelengths of 13 cm (S-band) and 3.6 cm (X-band) were used to probe the equatorial atmosphere of Titan. The measurements were conducted during the occultation of the spacecraft by the satellite on November 12, 1980. An analysis of the differential dispersive frequency measurements did not reveal any ionization layers in the upper atmosphere of Titan. The resolution was approximately 3 × 103 and 5 × 103 electrons/cm3 near the evening and morning terminators, respectively. Abrupt signal changes observed at ingress and egress indicated a surface radius of 2575.0 ± 0.5 km, leading to a mean density of 1.881 ± 0.002 g cm?3 for the satellite. The nondispersive data were used to derive profiles in height of the gas refractivity and microwave absorption in Titan's troposphere and stratosphere. No absorption was detected; the resolution was about 0.01 dB/km at the 13-cm wavelength. The gas refractivity data, which extend from the surface to about 200 km altitude, were interpreted in two different ways. In the first, it is assumed that N2 makes up essentially all of the atmosphere, but with very small amounts of CH4 and other hydrocarbons also present. This approach yielded a temperature and pressure at the surface of 94.0 ± 0.7°K and 1496 ± 20 mbar, respectively. The tropopause, which was detected near 42 km altitude, had a temperature of 71.4 ± 0.5°K and a pressure of about 130 mbar. Above the tropopause, the temperature increased with height, reaching 170 ± 15°K near the 200-km level. The maximum temperature lapse rate observed near the surface (1.38 ± 0.10°K/km) corresponds to the adiabatic value expected for a dry N2 atmosphere—indicating that methane saturation did not occur in tbis region. Above the 3.5-km altitude level the lapse rate dropped abruptly to 0.9 ± 0.1°K/km and then decreased slowly with increasing altitude, crossing zero at the tropopause. For the N2 atmospheric model, the lapse rate transition at the 3.5-km level appears to mark the boundary between a convective region near the surface having the dry adiabatic lapse rate, and a higher stable region in radiative equilibrium. In the second interpretation of the refractivity data, it is assumed, instead, that the 3.5 km altitude level corresponds to the bottom of a CH4 cloud layer, and that N2 and CH4 are perfectly mixed below this level. These assumptions lead to an atmospheric model which below the clouds contains about 10% CH4 by number density. The temperature near the surface is about 95°K. Arguments concerning the temperature lapse rates computed from the radio measurements appear to favor models in which methane forms at most a limited haze layer high in the troposphere.  相似文献

We present the results of our observations of the H2O maser emission toward the complex source ON2 associated with an active star-forming region. The observations were performed in a wide range of radial velocities, from ?75 to 90 km s?1. We have detected an emission with flux densities of 9.2, 4, and 26 Jy at radial velocities of ?33.5, ?24.4, and ?18.8 km s?1, respectively, at which no emission has been observed previously. The detected emission is most likely associated with a hitherto unknown cluster of maser spots located between the northern (N) and southern (S) components of the source ON2 (closer to the northern one). This cluster may be associated with one of the three CO molecular outflows in the ON2 region. We have also detected an emission at ?22 and ?14.5 km s?1 in N and at 12.6 km s?1 in S, which has extended significantly the velocity ranges of the maser emission in these sources and allowed their models to be improved.  相似文献

As a simulation of collisional processes among solid bodies of various sizes in the solar system, polycarbonate projectiles of mass 0.37 g were impacted against cubic basaltic rocks of about 2 to 10 cm and larger with a velocity of 2.6 km/sec. The corresponding energy imparted per unit mass of target ranges from about 106 to 109 ergs/g. The phenomena are classified into four categories with increasing target size: (1) complete destruction, (2) remaining core, (3) transition region, and (4) crater formation. Empirical formulas for the cumulative mass of the fragments and the mass of the maximum fragment are given. The similarity of these formulas is briefly discussed. The experimental results are applied to the examination of the hypothesis that a single Martian satellite was once ruptured by impact, leaving the present two satellites. It is suggested that the radius of the parent satellite was larger than about 30 km.  相似文献

Measurements of the twilight enhancement of airglow emission from O+(2P) near 7325 Å reveal major changes which accompany geomagnetic activity, no significant distance between evening and morning and an increase in brightness paralleling the approach to solar maximum. The principal source for O+(2P) is direct photoionization from O(3P) but at low solar activity there appears to be a contribution from another source in early twilight which may be local photoelectron ionization into O+(2P). The geomagnetic and solar effects appear to reflect changes in the O and N2 density in the thermosphere; ground based twilight measurements of O+ emissions thus provide a simple means for monitoring thermospheric structure from 300 km to ~ 500 km at solar minimum and to ~600 km at solar maximum.  相似文献

Nitric oxide is formed in the atmosphere through the ionization and dissociation of molecular nitrogen by galactic cosmic rays. One NO molecule is formed for each ion pair produced by cosmic ray ionization. The height-integrated input (day and night) to the lower stratosphere is of the order of 6 × 107 NO molecules cm?2/sec in the auroral zone (geomagnetic latitude Φ ? 60°) during the minimum of the sunspot cycle and 4 × 107 NO molecules cm?2/sec in the subauroral belt and auroral region (Φ? 45°) at the maximum of solar activity. The tropical production is less than 10?7 NO molecules cm?2/sec above 17 km and at the equator the production is only 3 × 106NO molecules cm?2/sec.  相似文献

A model is presented for the lateral variations of density within the Moon. The model gives rise to a gravitational potential which is equal to the observed potential at the lunar surface, moreover, it minimizes the total shear-strain energy of the Moon. The model exhibits lateral variations of about ±0.25 g cc–1 within 50 km depth. The variations, however, reduce to ±0.06 and ±0.008 g cc–1 within layers at 50–135 and 135–235 km respectively, and they become negligible below this region. The associated stress differences are found to be about 50 bar within 600 km depth, having their maximum values of about 90 bars at a depth of about 250 km. On the basis of these stress differences a strength of about 100 bar is concluded for the upper 400 km of the lunar interior for the last 3.3 b.y.Paper dedicated to Professor Harold C. Ten lightcurves and UBV photometry of 433 Eros were obtained between August 1972 and May 1975. The absolute magnitude of the lightcurve maximum is 10.75 and the phase coefficient is 0.025 mag/deg. There may be a small difference in B-V color between the northern and southern hemispheres. The pole of the axis of rotation is directed toward λ0 = 16°, β0 = 12°, ecliptic longitude and latitude, respectively, and the rotation is direct with a sidereal period of 0.d219599 or 5h16m13s4 ± 0.s2. The dimensions derived from the polarimetric albedo and the lightcurve amplitudes are 12km × 12km × 31km for a smooth cylinder with hemispherical ends.  相似文献

We carried out the first 21-cm line observations of an extended region around the Wolf-Rayet star WR 102 and the associated nebula G2.4+1.4 with the RATAN-600 radio telescope. An irregular H I shell was identified. Its maximum expansion velocity reaches ~50 km s?1, and its outer diameter (at a distance of 3 kpc) is 56 pc. The mechanical luminosity of the stellar wind required to produce the observed shell is estimated to be ~0.8×1038 erg s?1; the age of the shell is ~3.4×105 yr. We compare the inferred parameters of the H I shell with the structure and kinematics of the ionized nebula and with the dust distribution in the region.  相似文献
