The 1 index of the solar Ca II K line is compared with the core-to-wing ratio of satellite measurements of the Mg II h and k lines. The correlation coefficient r = 0.976 for the Nimbus-7 Mg II ratio during solar cycle 21 andr = 0.99 for the NOAA9 Mg II ratio in cycle 22. Linear regression analysis for the full dynamic range of both data sets is used to combine the Nimbus-7 and NOAA9 Mg II data. These relations permit the ground-based Ca K index to estimate the solar UV flux.  相似文献

The He 1083 nm line equivalent width and the 10.7 cm radio flux are employed to model the total solar irradiance corrected for sunspot deficit. A new area dependent photometric sunspot index (APSI) based on sunspot photometry by Steinegger et al. (1990) is used to correct the irradiance data for sunspot deficits. Two periods of time are investigated: firstly, the 1980–1989 period between the maxima of solar cycles 21 and 22; this period is covered by ACRIM I irradiance data. Secondly, the 1978–92 period which includes both maxima; here, the revised Nimbus-7 ERB data are used. For both He 1083 nm and 10.7 cm radio flux irradiance models as well as ACRIM I and ERB irradiance data, the APSI yields an improved fit compared to the one obtained with the standard Photometric Sunspot Index (PSI) which uses a constant bolometric spot contrast. With APSI, the standard deviation calculated from daily values is 0.461 Wm–2 for the period 1980–89 modelling ACRIM I vs. He 1083 nm, as compared to 0.478 when PSI is used, and to 0.531 for the uncorrected ACRIM series. A similar improvement is obtained for the same period modelling ERB vs. He 1083 nm, while there is almost no improvement for the long period. As a general result the models provide a good fit with the spot-deficit.-corrected irradiance only during the period between the maxima. If both maxima are included (period 1978–92) the He 1083 nm and 10.7 cm radio flux models show appreciably larger discrepancies to the irradiances corrected for PSI or APSI.  相似文献

Analyses based on irradiance observations from space within the last one and a half decades have discovered variations in the entire solar spectrum and at UV wavelengths on time scales of minutes to decades. In this paper we analyze the distribution of the measuring uncertainties and daily fluctuations in total solar irradiance measured by the Nimbus-7/ERB and SMM/ACRIM I radiometers as a function of solar cycle. Changes in solar total irradiance and its surrogates shorter than the solar rotation have also been considered as noise and have been removed from the data. Our results show that the noise (both instrumental and solar noise) changes as a function of the solar cycle, being higher during high solar activity conditions. The analysis of the scatter plot diagrams between the data and their standard deviation, the so-called dispersion diagrams, provides a useful tool to estimate and predict the time of solar maximum and minimum activity conditions.Deceased on October 13, 1994.  相似文献

Measurements of the Nimbus-7/ERB and SMM/ACRIM radiometers indicated several dips in the total solar irradiance in 1983 and in the first part of 1984. The dips in 1983, which should have a real solar origin, were selected according to the peaks of the projected areas of the active sunspot groups above the 2 error limit of their data set. In the first part of 1984 the sunspot activity was strong and few irradiance dips with relatively large amplitudes were observed. In the second part of 1984 the sunspot activity disappeared and at that time the solar constant only fluctuated around its mean.  相似文献

The satellite total solar irradiance (TSI) database provides a valuable record for investigating models of solar variation used to interpret climate changes. The 35-year ACRIM total solar irradiance (TSI) satellite composite time series has been revised using algorithm updates based on 13 years of accumulated mission experience and corrections to ACRIMSAT/ACRIM3 results for scattering and diffraction derived from recent testing at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics/Total solar irradiance Radiometer Facility (LASP/TRF). The net correction lowers the ACRIM3 scale by ~3000 ppm, in closer agreement with the scale of SORCE/TIM results (average total solar irradiance ≈1361.5 W/m2). Differences between the ACRIM and PMOD TSI composites are investigated, particularly the decadal trending during solar cycles 21–22 and the Nimbus7/ERB and ERBS/ERBE results available to bridge the ACRIM Gap (1989–1992), are tested against a set of solar proxy models. Our findings confirm the following ACRIM TSI composite features: (1) The validity of the TSI peak in the originally published ERB results in early 1979 during solar cycle 21; (2) The correctness of originally published ACRIM1 results during the SMM spin mode (1981–1984); (3) The upward trend of originally published ERB results during the ACRIM Gap; (4) The occurrence of a significant upward TSI trend between the minima of solar cycles 21 and 22 and (5) a decreasing trend during solar cycles 22–23. The same analytical approach does not support some important features of the PMOD TSI composite: (1) The downward corrections applied to the originally published ERB and ACRIM1 results during solar cycle 21; (2) The step function sensitivity change in ERB results at the end-of-September 1989; (3) The downward trend of ERBE results during the ACRIM Gap and (4) the use of ERBE results to bridge the ACRIM Gap. Our analysis provides a first order validation of the ACRIM TSI composite approach and its 0.037 %/decade upward trend during solar cycles 21–22. The implications of increasing TSI during the global warming of the last two decades of the 20th century are that solar forcing of climate change may be a significantly larger factor than represented in the CMIP5 general circulation climate models.  相似文献

Using the smoothed time series of maximum CME speed index for solar cycle 23, it is found that this index, analyzed jointly with six other solar activity indicators, shows a hysteresis phenomenon. The total solar irradiance, coronal index, solar radio flux (10.7?cm), Mg?ii core-to-wing ratio, sunspot area, and H?? flare index follow different paths for the ascending and the descending phases of solar cycle?23, while a saturation effect exists at the maximum phase of the cycle. However, the separations between the paths are not the same for the different solar activity indicators used: the H?? flare index and total solar irradiance depict broad loops, while the Mg?ii core-to-wing ratio and sunspot area depict narrow hysteresis loops. The lag times of these indices with respect to the maximum CME speed index are discussed, confirming that the hysteresis represents a clue in the search for physical processes responsible for changing solar emission.  相似文献

The effects of scattering and diffraction on the observations of the ACRIMSAT/ACRIM3 satellite TSI monitoring mission have been characterized by the preflight calibration approach for satellite total solar irradiance (TSI) sensors implemented at the LASP/TRF (Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics/Total Solar Irradiance Radiometer Facility). The TRF also calibrates the SI (International System of units) traceability to the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) cryo-radiometric scale. ACRIM3’s self-calibration agrees with NIST to within the uncertainty of the test procedure (~500 ppm). A correction of ~5000 ppm was found for scattering and diffraction that has significantly reduced the scale difference between the results of the ACRIMSAT/ACRIM3 and SORCE/TIM satellite experiments. Algorithm updates reflecting more than 10 years of mission experience have been made that further improve the ACRIM3 results by eliminating some thermally driven signal and increasing the signal to noise ratio. The result of these changes is a more precise and detailed picture of TSI variability. Comparison of the results from the ACRIM3, SORCE/TIM and SOHO/VIRGO satellite experiments demonstrate the near identical detection of TSI variability on all sub-annual temporal and amplitude scales during the TIM mission. The largest occurs at the rotational period of the primary solar activity longitudes. On the decadal timescale, while ACRIM3 and VIRGO results exhibit close agreement throughout, TIM exhibits a consistent 500 ppm upward trend relative to ACRIM3 and VIRGO. A solar magnetic activity area proxy for TSI has been used to demonstrate that the ACRIM TSI composite and its +0.037 %/decade TSI trend during solar cycles 21–23 is the most likely correct representation of the extant satellite TSI database. The occurrence of this trend during the last decades of the 20th century supports a more robust contribution of TSI variation to detected global temperature increase during this period than predicted by current climate models.  相似文献

We have compared total solar irradiance from Nimbus-7 with ground-based photometry from the San Fernando Observatory (SFO) for 109 days between June 1 and December 31, 1988. We have also included in some analyses NOAA-9 SBUV2 data orF10.7 radio flux. The Nimbus-7 data are from orbital samples, averaged to the mean time of observation at SFO. Using the same parameters as in Chapmanet al. (1992), the multiple regression gives anR 2 = 0.9131 and a solar minimum irradiance,S 0, = 1371.76 ± 0.18 W m–2 for the best fit.  相似文献

A strong inverse correlation is shown between the irradiance dips observed by the SMM/ACRIM radiometer and the projected areas of the active sunspots. This strong correlation and the results of a preliminary time series analysis indicate that the value of the solar constant decreased when quickly developing sunspot groups with complex structure occurred on the solar disk. On the other hand, when the old groups with simple structure were dominant the value of the solar constant increased slightly or these groups could reduce the effects of the active spots. On the basis of our investigations it seems that the formation of the sunspots and the new activity of the older ones as well as the decreases of the solar constant may be the common symptoms of such a physical process which takes place in deeper regions of the Sun through the interaction of magnetic fields with the convection.  相似文献

We have established a statistical relation between the facular contribution to the solar irradiance and the intensity of the associated calcium plage. For the solar irradiance data the ACRIM measurements were used. The quiet-Sun level of the irradiance was determined as a function of the time for the period studied. A sample of plages in the period of the solar activity minimum was selected, during the periods when no spots were present on the solar disc. We have expressed the dependence studied through the parameter C p in the proxy PFI concept. The parameter C p could be related to the plage intensity (I) as C p = 0.006I + 0.003. The mean value of the parameter C p ranged between 0.015 and 0.017 depending on the choice of samples.  相似文献

Measurements of the Nimbus-7 and Solar Maximum Mission satellites reported temporary large decreases of the solar constant of the order of a few tenths of a percent on a time-scale from days to weeks. Our investigations show that these decreases were caused by active sunspot groups with fast development and complex structure. This connection between the solar constant variation and the appearance of the active groups seems to be more clear in the maximum of the solar activity. At the time of the solar minimum, mainly in the second part of 1984, there were not any active sunspot groups practically on the solar disk, the value of the solar constant only fluctuated around its mean without large variation. The results of time series analyses show that the periodicity of the solar constant values, of young and active spot areas was nearly 23.5 days in 1980, which increases to 28 days towards the minimum of the solar cycle till 1983. During this time interval the main periodicity of the old, passive spot areas was around 28 days. In 1984, at the time of the solar minimum, there were not any obvious periodicities practically in the projected areas of the different types of the sunspot groups.  相似文献

The solar irradiance modulation due to active regions during 1980 has been investigated in detail. Specifically, we estimate the uncertainties caused by ground-based data used as input in the modeling effort, and by our currently incomplete knowledge of the proper parameters that describe the angular variation of sunspot and facular contrasts. We conclude that the most significant uncertainties are due to errors in area measurements and, possibly, varying spot and facular brightness. A standard model for later use is derived by a best-fit technique of the currently available ACRIM irradiance data and the predictions of our models with appropriately varied parameters. Finally, we compute the expected irradiance for the entire year of 1980.NRC Senior Research Associate on leave from the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics and the Astro-Geophysics Department, University of Colorado at Boulder, Colo., U.S.A.  相似文献

Spatially-resolved precise photometric observations of the whole Sun at wavelengths of 545nm (FWHM 40nm) were carried out by using the CCD solar surface photometer. Bright parts of photospheric network have contrast of several tenths of percent, and their contribution to the total irradiance is approximately half that of active region faculae. The solar irradiance variations estimated from sunspots, faculae and active network (contrast>0.3%) agreed with the ACRIM data. The quiet Sun irradiance used in the present results was different from the total irradiance at the solar minimum observed by the ACRIM, which indicates unmeasured components (contrast>0.1%) cause the 11-year cycle irradiance variation.  相似文献

This paper presents a statistical comparison of the solar total irradiance measured from the Nimbus-7, the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM), the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS), and the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) spacecraft platforms, for the period 1985 –1992. The mean irradiance, standard deviation, and the correlation among the daily irradiance remained high during periods of high solar activity. Linear regression models are established to estimate the irradiance measurements from one platform by the others. The results are consistent with the observations. However, the Nimbus-7 ERB responses show a drift during 1989–1992. The absolute irradiance observed by each instrument varies within the uncertainty associated with the corresponding radiometer.  相似文献

Analyzing daily values of the total solar irradiance (TSI), the coronal index of solar activity (CI), and the Mg II 280-nm core-to-wing ratio (Mg II index), we have found that the temporal variations of these indices are very similar to each other during the period from 1978 to 2005. The correlation between CI and TSI, with the PSI correction lying within the interval under study, has been found to be 0.699, which is very close to the value of 0.703 of the correlation between Mg II and TSI for 27-day averages (the CI – Mg correlation is 0.824). The regression equation between CI and TSI is almost linear, except for TSI depletions when a large number of sunspots are present on the visible disk. By employing CI, an extrapolation of TSI back to 1947 is presented.  相似文献

ACRIM data have been analyzed to study the time profiles of simple irradiance dips caused by single active regions. Comparison of the average characteristics of the dips appearing in the minimum and maximum of the solar cycle shows that there are no significant differences. In both periods we disclosed the facular irradiance excess in the profile wings having typical duration of two to three days and an amplitude of about 20% of the dip amplitude. The profiles were asymmetric, with a stronger and longer excess in the trailing wing. We determined an average profile which was attributed to an idealized active region, and we calculated the luminosity perturbation caused by it. Excess radiation in the wings of the profile compensates about 1/3 of the deficit in the dip. In the most simple case from our sample we compared the profile based on ACRIM measurements and the proxy profile estimated using sunspot and plage areas published in Solar Geophysical Data catalogues. The comparison indicates that the facular excess was compensating instantaneously about 2/3 of the luminosity deficit caused by sunspots.  相似文献

Until now a simple Photometric Sunspot Index (PSI) model was used (e.g. Willsonet al., 1981) to describe the contribution of sunspots to the solar irradiance deficit measurement by ACRIM. In this work we replace this model by a photometry of sunspot pictures for the period of 19 August to 4 September, 1980 taking into account the individual features, like lightbridges or umbral dots, of each spot. The main results of this preliminary analysis are: (1) theA u/A p ratios and alsos the values vary in a wide range and are by no means constant as in the PSI model; (2) the general trend of the irradiance deficit from our analysis agrees well with the ACRIM measurements; (3) on some days there are differences of more than 50% between the deficits derived from our measurements and from the PSI model.Paper presented at the 11th Eurpean Regional Astronomical Meetings of the IAU on New Windows to the Universe, held 3–8 July, 1989, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain  相似文献

Solar irradiance measurements from the ACRIM experiment show a clear response to the rotation periods of g-mode oscillations (l = 1, 2, and 3) and their first harmonics. Peaks in the ACRIM spectrum at 16.6, 18.3, 20.7, 36.5, and - 71 days all lie within about 1% of periods arising from g-mode rotation. This means that the g-modes are a fundamental cause of irradiance fluctuations. On time scales of months and less they modulate the irradiance by means of transient flows of global scale which they stimulate in the Sun's convective envelope. Dimensional arguments indicate that the flows carry up heat at an average rate 10-3 L which is not in conflict with observed changes in the irradiance. Five additional tests for g-modes and large-scale convection are given. An instability is described which undermines diffusion models of sunspot energy storage.  相似文献

Solar radiative output and its variability: evidence and mechanisms   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Electromagnetic radiation from the Sun is Earths primary energy source. Space-based radiometric measurements in the past two decades have begun to establish the nature, magnitude and origins of its variability. An 11-year cycle with peak-to-peak amplitude of order 0.1 % is now well established in recent total solar irradiance observations, as are larger variations of order 0.2 % associated with the Suns 27-day rotation period. The ultraviolet, visible and infrared spectral regions all participate in these variations, with larger changes at shorter wavelengths. Linkages of solar radiative output variations with solar magnetism are clearly identified. Active regions alter the local radiance, and their wavelength-dependent contrasts relative to the quiet Sun control the relative spectrum of irradiance variability. Solar radiative output also responds to sub-surface convection and to eruptive events on the Sun. On the shortest time scales, total irradiance exhibits five minute fluctuations of amplitude %, and can increase to as much as 0.015 % during the very largest solar flares. Unknown is whether multi-decadal changes in solar activity produce longer-term irradiance variations larger than observed thus far in the contemporary epoch. Empirical associations with solar activity proxies suggest reduced total solar irradiance during the anomalously low activity in the seventeenth century Maunder Minimum relative to the present. Uncertainties in understanding the physical relationships between direct magnetic modulation of solar radiative output and heliospheric modulation of cosmogenic proxies preclude definitive historical irradiance estimates, as yet.Received: 26 August 2004, Published online: 16 November 2004 Correspondence to: Claus Fröhlich  相似文献

Several satellites of Jupiter and Saturn show an asymmetric reflectance between the leading hemisphere (which is generally brighter for the inner satellites of both systems) and the trailing one (which is brighter for the outer satellites Callisto and Iapetus). In order to seek a unified explantation of these observational data we assume that, during the final phase of the satellite accumulation process, the surfaces were subjected to a heavy meteoroidal bombardment by the residual bodies in the circumplanetary protosatellite swarms. With suitable hypotheses about the orbital elements of these bodies, the resulting collision rate is anisotropic in an opposite way for inner and outer satellites, with a difference between the two hemispheres of the order of 10–20% for all satellites except Iapetus (for which the anisotropy is larger). We conclude that the model can qualitatively account for the observed effect, even if it is difficult to propose a detailed mechanism for changing the albedo properties of the satellite surfaces by means of meteoroidal collisions.  相似文献
