The upper limit on the quiet time solar neutron flux from 1–20 MeV has been measured to be less than 2 × 10-3 n cm-2 s–1 at the 95% confidence level. This result is deduced from the OGO-6 neutron detector measurements of the day-night effect near the equator at low altitudes for the period from June 7, 1969, to December 23, 1969. The OGO-6 detector had very low (< 4%) counting rate contributions from locally produced neutrons in the detecting system and the spacecraft and from charged-particle interactions in the neutron sensor.Communications Research Center, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.  相似文献

Using the cosmic-ray intensity data recorded with ground-based monitors at Mt. Washington and Deep River, and with cosmic-ray telescopes on Pioneer 8 and 9 spacecraft as well as the 2-hour averages of the IMF (magnitude and direction) and the solar wind bulk speed and density at 1 AU, the cosmic-ray decreases and interplanetary disturbances, that occurred during the period of solar magnetic polarity reversal in solar cycle 20, were investigated. We observed a two-step Forbush decrease on 22–23 November 1969, and a Forbush decrease on 26 November 1969, which are respectively consistent with the model of Barnden (1973), and of Parker (1963) and Barnden (1973). Only one Forbush decrease event was observed in December 1969, a period during which there was a solar magnetic polarity reversal; the Forbush decrease was attributed to a long-lived corotating high-speed solar wind stream. This is indicative that at heliolongitudes from 43° E to 70° W of S–E radial, covered by the observations, the solar magnetic polarity reversal in solar cycle 20 was not carried by, nor related to, individual transient structures, and that the reversal most probably evolved gradually.  相似文献

Colliding comets in the Solar System may be an important source of gamma ray bursts. The spherical gamma ray comet cloud required by the results of the Venera Satellites (Mazets and Golenetskii, 1987) and the BATSE detector on the Compton Satellite (Meeganet al., 1992a, b) is neither the Oort Cloud nor the Kuiper Belt. To satisfy observations ofN(>P max) vsP max for the maximum gamma ray fluxes,P max > 10–5 erg cm–2 s–1 (about 30 bursts yr–1), the comet density,n, should increase asn a 1 from about 40 to 100 AU wherea is the comet heliocentric distance. The turnover above 100 AU requiresn a –1/2 to 200 AU to fit the Venera results andn a 1/4 to 400 AU to fit the BATSE data. Then the masses of comets in the 3 regions are from: 40–100 AU, about 9 earth masses,m E; 100–200 AU about 25m E; and 100–400 AU, about 900m E. The flux of 10–5 erg cm–2 s–1 corresponds to a luminosity at 100 AU of 3 × 1026 erg s–1. Two colliding spherical comets at a distance of 100 AU, each with nucleus of radiusR of 5 km, density of 0.5 g cm–3 and Keplerian velocity 3 km s–1 have a combined kinetic energy of 3 × 1028 erg, a factor of about 100 greater than required by the burst maximum fluxes that last for one second. Betatron acceleration in the compressed magnetic fields between the colliding comets could accelerate electrons to energies sufficient to produce the observed high energy gamma rays. Many of the additional observed features of gamma ray bursts can be explained by the solar comet collision source.  相似文献

Type III radio bursts observed at kilometric wavelengths ( 0.35 MHz) by the OGO-5 spacecraft are compared with > 45 keV solar electron events observed near 1 AU by the IMP-5 and Explorer 35 spacecraft for the period March 1968–November 1969.Fifty-six distinct type III bursts extending to 0.35 MHz ( 50 R equivalent height above the photosphere) were observed above the threshold of the OGO-5 detector; all but two were associated with solar flares. Twenty-six of the bursts were followed 40 min later by > 45 keV solar electron events observed at 1 AU. All of these 26 bursts were identified with flares located west of W 09 solar longitude. Of the bursts not associated with electron events only three were identified with flares west of W 09, 18 were located east of W 09 and 7 occurred during times when electron events would be obscured by high background particle fluxes. Thus almost all type III bursts from the western half of the solar disk observed by OGO-5 above a detection flux density threshold of the order of 10–13 Wm–2 Hz–1 at 0.35 MHz are followed by > 45 keV electrons at 1 AU with a maximum flux of 10 cm–2 s–1 ster–1. If particle propagation effects are taken into account it is possible to account for lack of electron events with the type III bursts from flares east of the central meridian. We conclude that streams of 10–100 keV electrons are the exciting agent for type III bursts and that these same electrons escape into the interplanetary medium where they are observed at 1 AU. The total number of > 45 keV electrons emitted in association with a strong kilometer wavelength type III burst is estimated to be 5 × 1032.  相似文献

By processing 494 observations of Comet Harrington–Abell, we obtained a unified system of elements that includes its turn around the Sun during which it closely approached Jupiter to a minimum distance of 0.037 AU in 1974. A study of the cometary orbit before and after the approach showed that, probably, at the approach of the comet to Jupiter, apart from the well-known gravitational perturbations, its motion was affected by an additional force. An improvement of the cometary orbit by assuming that an additional acceleration inversely proportional to the square of the distance to Jupiter exists in its motion yielded the following values: (4.57 ± 0.42) × 10–10 and (–7.20 ± 0.42) × 10–10 AU day–2 for the radial and transversal acceleration components, respectively. As a plausible explanation of the changes in the cometary orbit, we additionally considered a model based on the hypothesis of partial disintegration of the cometary nucleus. The parameter that characterizes the instant displacement of the center of inertia along the jovicentric radius vector was estimated to be –1.83 ± 0.75 km. Based on a unified numerical theory of cometary motion, we determined the nongravitational parameters using Marsden's model for two periods: A 1 = (11.68 ± 1.74) × 10–10 AU day–2, A 2 = (0.53 ± 0.0357) × 10–10 AU day–2 for 1975–1999 and A 1 = (5.92 ± 5.86) × 10–10 AU day–2, A 2 = (0.08 ± 0.028) × 10–10 AU day–2 for 1955–1969, under the assumption that the nongravitational acceleration changed at the approach of the comet to Jupiter.  相似文献

We have deduced the power-law rigidity spectra, J(P)=AP , and the spectral evolution of the solar flare events that occurred in the present solar activity cycle on 6 November 1997, 14 July 2000, and 15 and 18 April 2001. The implications of these results for the acceleration of high-energy protons are discussed. The analysis is based on the ratios of the Mt. Washington to the Durham neutron monitor count-rate increases during the solar flare events. These two neutron monitors are located at different elevations (828 and 1030 g cm–2, respectively) but at approximately the same geographical latitude and longitude. The proton spectra from 1 to 10 GV determined from the ratios of the count rate increases of the two neutron monitors are found to agree with those deduced from the global neutron monitor network or selected neutron monitors in 10 solar flare events from 1960 to 1990 for which comparative results are available. Thus the ratio method is quick, easy and reliable for deducing the spectral shape of solar flare protons at neutron monitor rigidities and for obtaining the spectral evolution as a function of time.  相似文献

The average profile of Forbush decreases, produced by eastern-, central- and western-region solar flares is obtained separately by superposed epoch analysis for the periods 1966–1969 (qA < 0) and 1971–1979 (qA > 0). It is observed that the recovery of an average Forbush decrease from the maximum depression level is faster for the situation qA > 0 than for the situation qA < 0. This is in accordance with expectations from the drift theory. It is also observed that the drift effect is more pronounced for western-flare Forbush decreases which, of course, have a smaller magnitude compared to eastern- and central-flare Forbush decreases. The average profiles of simple and complex type Forbush decreases are also obtained separately for three periods 1965–1979, 1971–1979, and 1981–1987. It is found that the average profiles of simple and complex type Forbush decreases observed during the period 1965–1969 and 1971– 1979 are quite in agreement with drift theory. The anomalous behavior of average Forbush-decrease profiles during the period 1981–1987, especially in simple type Forbush decreases, is also explained by a drift current sheet tilt model.  相似文献

The upper limit on the solar neutron flux from 1–20 MeV has been measured, by a neutron detector on the OGO-6 satellite, to be less than 5 × 10–2 n cm–2 s–1 at the 95% confidence level for several flares including two flares of importance 3B and a solar proton event of importance 3B. The measurements are consistent with the models proposed by Lingenfelter (1969) and by Lingenfelter and Ramaty (1967) for solar neutron production during solar flares. The implied upper limit on the flux of 2.2 MeV solar gamma rays is about the same as the 2.2 MeV flux observed by Chupp et al. (1973).  相似文献

Energetic particle (0.1 to 100 MeV protons) acceleration is studied by using high resolution interplanetary magnetic field and plasma measurements at 1 AU (HEOS-2) and at 5 AU (Pioneer 10). Energy changes of a particle population are followed by computing test particle trajectories and the energy changes through the particle interaction with the time varying magnetic field. The results show that considerable particle acceleration takes place throughout the interplanetary medium, both in the corotating interaction regions (CIR) (5 AU), and in quiet regions (1 AU). Although shocks may contribute to acceleration we suggest statistical acceleration within the CIRs is sufficient to explain most energetic particle observations (e.g., McDonaldet al., 1975; Barnes and Simpson, 1976).The first and second order statistical acceleration coefficients which include transit time damping and Alfvén resonance interactions, are found to be well represented byD T 8.5×10–6 T 0.5 MeV s–1 andD TT 4×10–6 T 1.5 MeV2 s–1 at 5 AU.By comparison, Fisk's estimates (1976), based on quasi-linear theory for transit-time damping, gaveD TT 5×10–7 T MeV2 s–1 at 1 AU.  相似文献

An impulsive burst of 100–400 keV solar X-rays associated with a small solar flare was observed on October 10, 1970 with a large area scintillator aboard a balloon floating at an altitude of 4.2 g cm-2 above the Earth's surface. The X-ray burst was also observed simultaneously in 10–80 keV range by the OGO-5 satellite and in 8–20 Å range by the SOLRAD-9 satellite. The impulsive X-ray emission reached its maximum at 1643 UT at which time the differential photon spectrum in 20–80 keV range was of the form 2.3 × 104 E -3.2 photons cm-2 s-1 keV-1 at 1 AU. The event is attributed to a H-subflare located approximately at S13, E88 on the solar disc. The spectral characteristics of this event are examined in the light of the earlier X-ray observations of small solar flares.  相似文献

Statistical analysis has been carried out of the relations between period and the ageP–t c, and the inclination of magnetic to rotation axis to the age –t cof pulsars have been done.Up to characteristic agest c=3×107 years the period increases as expected for magneto-dipole radiation energy lossesP=P m (1–exp(–t/ B ))1/n–1. Best-fitting parameters of this approximation are the time-scale of the magnetic moment decay B =4×106 years and breaking indexn=3.6. Fort c>3×107 years theP–t cdependence is significantly different. The inclination of magnetic to rotation axis decreases versus age, showing a secular alignment of the axis. But this decrease continues also only up tot c=3×107 years. Thus bothP–t cand –t cdependencies indicate that most of the pulsars of agest c>3×107 years are not evolutionary continuations of more younger ones, but apparently represent another population of pulsars, which differ by their genetic history or physical processes. This population includes all known millisecond pulsars. We suggest, that this population is a so-called recycled pulsar. The list of candidates of recycled pulsars is presented.A new evaluation of the inclination of the magnetic to the rotation axis for 105 pulsars is presented.  相似文献

The pressure-corrected hourly counting rate data of four neutron monitor stations have been employed to study the variation of cosmic ray diurnal anisotropy for a period of about 50 years (1955–2003). These neutron monitors, at Oulu ( R c = 0.78 GV), Deep River ( R c = 1.07 GV), Climax ( R c = 2.99 GV), and Huancayo ( R c = 12.91 GV) are well distributed on the earth over different latitudes and their data have been analyzed. The amplitude of the diurnal anisotropy varies with a period of one solar cycle (∼11 years), while the phase varies with a period of two solar cycles (∼22 years). In addition to its variation on year-to-year basis, the average diurnal amplitude and phase has also been calculated by grouping the days for each solar cycle, viz. 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23. As a result of these groupings over solar cycles, no significant change in the diurnal vectors (amplitude as well as phase) from one cycle to other has been observed. Data were analyzed by arranging them into groups on the basis of the polarity of the solar polar magnetic field and consequently on the basis of polarity states of the heliosphere ( A > 0 and A < 0). Difference in time of maximum of diurnal anisotropy (shift to earlier hours) is observed during A < 0 (1970s, 1990s) polarity states as compared to anisotropy observed during A > 0 (1960s, 1980s). This shift in phase of diurnal anisotropy appears to be related to change in preferential entry of cosmic ray particles (via the helioequatorial plane or via solar poles) into the heliosphere due to switch of the heliosphere from one physical/magnetic state to another following the solar polar field reversal.  相似文献

Solar neutron emission during large flares is investigated by using neutron monitor data from the mountain stations Chacaltaya (Bolivia), Mina Aguilar (Argentine), Pic-du-Midi (France) and Jungfraujoch (Switzerland). Registrations from such days on which large flares appeared around the local noon time of the monitor station are superimposed with the time of the optical flare as reference point. No positive evidence for a solar neutron emission was found with this method, However, by using an extrapolation of the neutron transport functions given by Alsmiller and Boughner a rough estimation of mean upper limits for the solar neutron flux is possible. The flux limits are compared with Lingenfelter's model calculations. From the Chacaltaya measurements it follows: N 02.8 × 10–3 N cm–2 s–1 per proton flare, E > 50 MeV, if P0 = 125 MV N 01.4 × 10–2 N cm–2 s–1 per proton flare, E > 50 MeV, if P 0 = 60 MV and from Pic-du-Midi measurements: N 06.7 × 10–3 N cm–2 s–1 per proton flare, E > 50 MeV, if P 0 = 125 MV N 04 × 10–2 N cm–2 s–1 per proton flare, E > 50 MeV, if P 0 = 60 MV P 0 = characteristic rigidity of the producing proton spectrum on the Sun.The flux limits estimated for some special proton flares are consistent with Lingenfelter's predictions for the acceleration phase but are too small for the slowing down phase. Therefore it is believed that Lingenfelter's assumption of isotropic proton emission from the flare region is not fulfilled.  相似文献

We present a new method to separate interplanetary and coronal propagation, starting from intensity variations observed by spaceprobes at different heliolongitudes. In general, a decrease in absolute intensities is observed simultaneously with an increase in temporal delays. The coupling of these two effects can be described by Reid's model of coronal diffusion and can in principle be used to determine the two coronal time constants, diffusion time t c and escape time A. In addition, a least-squares fit method is used to determine the parameters of interplanetary transport, assuming a radial dependence as (r) = 0(r/1 AU)b. The method is applied to the two solar events of 27 December, 1977 and 1 January, 1978 which were observed by the spaceprobes Helios 1, Helios 2, and Prognoz 6. Energetic particle data are analysed for 13–27 MeV protons and -0.5 MeV electrons. For the regions in space encountered during these events the mean free path of electrons is smaller than that of protons. Straight interpolation between the two rigidities leads to a rather flat rigidity dependence (P) P n with n = 0.17–0.25. This contradicts the prediction of a constant mean free path or of the transition to scatter-free propagation below about 100 MV rigidity. In three of the four cases the mean free path of 13–27 MeV protons is of the order 0.17 AU, the mean free path of electrons of the order 0.06 AU. For protons we find b - 0.7 for the exponent of the radial variation. The concept of two different coronal propagation regimes is confirmed. It is remarkable that in both regimes electrons are transported more efficiently than protons. This holds for the temporal delay as well as for the amplitude decrease. This is in contrast with the long existing concept of rigidity independent transport and puts severe limits to any model of coronal transport. For the December event all three spaceprobes are in the fast propagation regime up to an angular distance of 62°. For protons we find a finite delay even in the fast propagation region, corresponding to a coronal delay rate of about 0.8 hr rad-1 up to 60° angular distance. In contrast, relativistic electrons may reach this distance within a few minutes. The fast transport of electrons and the different behaviour of electrons and protons is in contradiction to the expanding bottle concept. An explanation of coronal transport by shock acceleration directly on open field lines could in principle work in case of protons in the fast propagation region, but would fail in case of the electrons. The fast and efficient transport of electrons is most likely due to a region of field lines extending over a wide range of longitudes directly from the active region into interplanetary space. The much slower transport of both particle types at large azimuthal distances can neither be explained by direct access to open field lines not by the direct shock acceleration concept. A possible explanation is the loop reconnection model in a modified version, allowing for a faster lateral transport of electrons. Now at AEG, 2000 Wedel, F.R.G.  相似文献

Measurements of charged particle fluxes at energies >-13 MeV (if protons), by means of a detector system of high geometrical factor (950 cm2 sr), flown on OGO-6 satellite, reveals a ring of low energy charged particles around equator with fluxes of the order of 50–70 particles (m–2 s–1 sr–1), in the altitude range of 400–1100 km. The ring of charged particles exists below the inner radiation belt and is restricted to ±4° of the geomagnetic equator. Distribution of the maximum flux with geomagnetic latitude andL is presented. Comparison of the observed fluxes with earlier measurements of low energy particles, reveals a differential energy spectrum of the type KE with the exponent nearly equal to 2.4 to 3.  相似文献

By use of the reddening free [m 1], [c 1], and indices data inuvby photometric system for three classical cepheids whose reddening values had been determined with the aid of photometry of field stars, three intrinsic relations of [m 1]–(b–y), [c 1]–(b–y), and –(b–y) have been established. It was shown that these three relations can be used to determine the colour excesses for other classical cepheids.  相似文献

Pyrheliometry, definition of the radiation scale in the International System of Units and monitoring the variability of solar total irradiance have been a focus of research at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory since the mid 1960's. A series of automated, electrically self-calibrating, cavity pyrheliometers known as Active Cavity Radiometers (ACR's) was developed as part of this program. A series of ground based experiments in 1968–69 led to the discovery of a systematic error in the International Pyrheliometric Scale. ACR's were among the instruments used to define the World Radiometric Reference in 1975.ACR flight experiments have been conducted to determine the 1 AU total solar irradiance and monitor its variability in time. A 1969 balloon experiment yielded a 1366 W m-2 result. The value from a 1976 sounding rocket experiment was 1368.1 W m-2. The results for two additional rocket experiments in 1978 and 80, revised in accordance with recent calibrations of ACR response to elevated pressures during these flights are: 1367.6 and 1367.8 W m-2, respectively. An ACR experiment (ACRIM) on the Solar Maximum Mission satellite has shown continuous variability of the total solar flux below the ±0.05% level and two large, temporary decreases of 0.1–0.2% lasting more than a week. The mean 1 AU total flux for ACRIM's first five months' observations was 1367.7 W m-2. Inflight comparison of ACR rocket and satellite measurements in May, 1980 demonstrated agreement to within ±0.05%. The 1 AU total solar irradiance results from ACR rocket and satellite experiments between 1976 and 1980 differ from their mean of 1367.8 W m-2 by no more than ±0.02%. The less precise 1969 balloon result is 0.1% lower. Although no observations were made from 1970–75, if solar behaviour in those five years was similar to that observed since 1976 then the upper limits of long term solar total irradiance variability are ±0.2% for the 1969–1980 period and ±0.1% between 1976 and 1980, based on the set of ACR observations.Proceedings of the 14th ESLAB Symposium on Physics of Solar Variations, 16–19 September 1980, Scheveningen, The Netherlands.  相似文献

This study deals with the short-term variations of cosmic ray intensity during the interval 1973–78. Daily means of high latitude neutron and meson monitors from the same station and those of a low latitude neutron monitor have been analysed using the Chree method of superposed epochs. The zero epoch for the Chree analyses corresponds to the day of a substantial increase (V 200 km s–1) in the solar wind speed to values of 550 km s–1 and which persists at such high values for an interval of at least three days. The investigation reveals the existence of two types of cosmic ray intensity variations with distinctly different spectral characteristics. During the interval 1973–76, relative changes in the neutron and meson monitor rates are nearly equal indicating an almost flat rigidity spectrum of variation. During 1977–78, however, the spectrum acquires a negative spectral character similar to that observed for Forbush decreases. We suggest that events of the interval 1973–76 are essentially due to high speed streams associated with solar coronal holes and that events of the interval 1977–78 are due to fast streams from solar active regions with flare activity.  相似文献

The existence of the 22-year modulation of cosmic ray intensity is pointed out, using data of the ion chamber at Huancayo and the neutron monitors at Ottawa and Deep River for about four solar cycles. The modulation consists of two discrete states (high and low intensities), corresponding respectively to those of the polarity of the polar magnetic field of the Sun. This can be interpreted on the basis of the following hypothesis; when the polar magnetic field of the Sun is nearly parallel to the galactic magnetic field, they could easily connect with each other, so that galactic cosmic rays could intrude more easily into the heliomagnetosphere along the magnetic line of force, as compared with those in the anti-parallel state of the magnetic fields. The observed intensity difference between two states is about 4.3 ± 0.2% for neutron monitor (Pc = 1.5GV). The abnormal increase in proton (0.28–0.42 GV) and electron (0.41-3.24 GV) fluxes in the 20th solar cycle and the sudden appearance of anomalous components (He+, etc.) since 1972 can be also explained on the basis of the present hypothesis. The transition between the two states has a time lag behind the polarity reversal, depending on the cosmic ray rigidity, such as about 1 year for the neutron monitor (Pc = 1.5 GV) and about 3.5 years for low rigidity components (P < 1 GV). These time lags could be explained on the basis of the generalized Simpson's coasting solar wind model and the general diffusion-convection theory on some assumptions.  相似文献

An attempt is made to search for a consistent model to explain the electromagnetic spectrum of the Crab nebula (Tau A). It is assumed that there is a continuous injection of electrons at the centre of the nebula with an energy spectrumE –1.54 as evidenced by radio data. This spectrum must steepen to a slope larger than 2 at some energyE i in order to ensure that the energy input into electrons remains finite. The spectrum must also steepen beyond an energyE c depending on the magnetic field because of synchrotron energy losses. Two types of models are considered: Class I, in which the whole nebula is characterised by a uniform magnetic field, and Class II, in which besides the general fieldH 0, small filamentary regions of strong fieldH s are postulated. In models of Class I, the best fit to the observed data is obtained whenE t >E c andH 05×10–4 gauss. However, this predicts a decrease in X-ray source size beyond 40 KeV. There are two possibilities of Class II model depending on the residence time of electrons in strong field regions being small or large. The former case explains the flattening in the optical spectrum.Experiments to distinguish between the various models are indicated.Presented at the International Conference on Cosmic Rays, Budapest, 1969.  相似文献
