The solubility and incorporation mechanisms of hydrogen in synthetic stishovite as a function of Al2O3 content have been investigated. Mechanisms for H incorporation in stishovite are more complex than previously thought. Most H in stishovite is incorporated via the Smyth et al. (Am Mineral 80:454–456, 1995) model, where H docks close to one of the shared O–O edges, giving rise to an OH stretching band in infrared (IR) spectra at 3,111–3,117 cm−1. However, careful examination of IR spectra from Al-stishovite reveals the presence of an additional OH band at 3,157–3,170 cm−1. All H is present on one site, with interstitial H both coupled to Al3+ substitutional defects on adjacent octahedral (Si4+) sites, and decoupled from other defects, giving rise to two distinct absorption bands. Trends in IR data as a function of composition are consistent with a change in Al incorporation mechanism in stishovite, with Al3+ substitution for Si4+ charge-balanced by oxygen vacancies at low bulk Al2O3 contents, and coupled substitution of Al3+ onto octahedral (Si4+) and interstitial sites at high bulk Al2O3 contents. Trends in OH stretching frequencies as a function of Al2O3 content suggest that any such change in Al incorporation mechanism could alter the effect that Al incorporation has on the compressibility of stishovite, as noted by Ono et al. (Am Mineral 87:1486–1489, 2002).  相似文献

The crystal structure of Bi2Al4−x Fe x O9 compounds (x = 0–4) has striking similarities with the crystal structure of mullite. A complete substitution of Al by Fe3+ in both octahedral and tetrahedral sites is a particular structural feature. The infrared (IR) spectra of the Bi2M4O9 compounds (M = Al, Fe3+) are characterised by three band groups with band maxima in the 900–800, 800–600 and 600–400 cm−1 region. Based on the spectroscopic results obtained from mullite-type phases, the present study focuses on the composition-dependent analysis of the 900–800 cm−1 band group, which is assigned to Al(Fe3+)–O stretching vibrations of the corner-sharing MO4 tetrahedra. The Bi2Al4O9 and Bi2Fe4O9 endmembers display single bands with maxima centred at 922 and 812 cm−1, respectively. Intermediate Bi2Al4−x Fe x O9 compounds exhibit a distinct splitting into three relatively sharp bands, which is interpreted in terms of ordering effects within the tetrahedral pairs. Thereby the high-energy component band of the band triplet relates to Al–O–Al conjunctions and the low-energy component band to Fe–O–Fe conjunctions. The intermediate band is assigned to stretching vibrations of Al–O–Fe or Fe–O–Al configurations of the corner-sharing tetrahedral pairs. Bands in the 800–600 cm−1 range are assigned to low-energy stretching vibrations of the MO4 tetrahedra and to M–O–M bending vibrations of the tetrahedral pairs. Absorptions in the 600–400 cm−1 range are essentially determined by M–O stretching modes of the M cations in octahedral coordination.  相似文献

The IR spectrum of an alpine, hydrothermally formed diopside containing 17 wt ppm H2O consists of three main OH absorption bands centred at 3647, 3464 and 3359 cm−1. Jadeite from a Californian vein occurrence is characterised by bands at 3616 and 3557 cm−1 and contains about 197 wt ppm H2O. Based on the pleochroic scheme of the OH absorption bands in diopside, OH defect incorporation models are derived on the basis of fully occupied cation sites and under the assumption of M1 and M2 site vacancies; OH defects replacing O2 oxygen atoms are most common. The less pronounced OH pleochroism and the broad band absorption pattern of jadeite indicate a high degree of OH defect disordering. The pleochroic scheme of the main absorption bands at 3616 and 3557 cm−1 implies partial replacement of O2 oxygen atoms by OH dipoles pointing to vacant Si sites. Under the assumption of M1 and M2 site vacancies, O1–H and O2–H defects are also derivable. OH incorporation modes assuming Si-vacancies should be considered for jadeite-rich clinopyroxenes formed in deep crust and upper mantle regions.  相似文献

The solubility and incorporation mechanisms of water in synthetic, water-saturated jadeite and Na-rich clinopyroxenes have been experimentally investigated. Infrared spectra for water-saturated jadeite synthesised from 2.0 to 10 GPa show two prominent sharp peaks at 3,373 and 3,613 cm–1 together with several weaker features in the OH-stretching region, indicating that there are at least 5 distinct modes of hydrogen incorporation in the structure. Water solubility in pure jadeite reaches a maximum of about 450 ppm by weight at 2 GPa and slowly decreases with increasing pressure to about 100 ppm at 10 GPa. Solubility can be described by the function cOH=A fH2O0.5 exp (–PVSolid/RT), where cOH is water solubility in ppm H2O by weight, A is 7.144 ppm/bar0.5, fH2O is water fugacity, and VSolid=8.019 cm3/mol is the volume change of the clinopyroxene upon incorporation of OH. Jadeite provides a good model for understanding hydrogen incorporation mechanisms in more complex omphacite compositions. Assignment of absorption bands in IR spectra verifies the importance of cation vacancies on the M2 site in providing mechanisms for hydrogen incorporation. However, results also suggest that substitution of lower valency cations onto the M1 site may also be important. Solid solution of jadeite with diopside and in particular, with Ca-Eskola component leads to a drastic increase of water solubility, and the bulk composition has a more important effect on the capacity of omphacite to store water than pressure and temperature. Omphacite is expected to be the major carrier of water in a subducted eclogite after the breakdown of hydrous minerals.Editorial responsibility: W. Schreyer  相似文献

The reaction glaucophane + 2 diopside + 2 quartz = tremolite + 2 albite is proposed to model the transition from the blueschist to greenschist facies. This reaction was investigated experimentally over the range of 1.0–2.1 GPa and 500–800°C using synthetic phases in the chemical system Na2O–CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O. Reversals of this reaction were possible at 500 and 550°C and growth of the low-pressure assemblage at 600°C; however, at temperatures of 600°C and higher and at pressures above 1.6 GPa omphacite nucleation (at the expense of diopside and albite) became quite strong and prevented attaining clear reversals of this reaction. Compositional changes in the amphiboles were determined by both electron microprobe analyses and correlations between unit-cell dimensions and composition. Glaucophane and particularly tremolite showed clear signs of compositional re-equilibration and merged to a single amphibole of winchite composition by about 754°C. These data were used to model the miscibility gap between glaucophane and tremolite using either the asymmetric multicomponent formulism parameters of W TR,GL of 68 kJ with αTR of 1.0 and αGL of 0.75 or a simple two-site asymmetric thermodynamic mixing expression with Margules parameters W NaCa of 13.4 kJ and W CaNa of 19.3 kJ. Combination of these thermodynamic models of the miscibility gap with extant thermodynamic data for the other phases yields a calculated location of the above reaction, involving pure diopside and albite, that is in good agreement with the observed experimental reversals and amphibole compositions over the range of 0.94–1.93 GPa and 400–754°C. The calculated effect of jadeite solid solution into diopside is to reduce the dP/dT slope from 0.0028 to 0.0021 GPa/°C and decrease the pressure by 0.28 GPa at 754°C. The dP/dT slope of this reaction boundary lies close to a linear geotherm of 13°C/km and is consistent with the slopes of other solid–solid reactions that have been used to model the blueschist-to-greenschist facies transition.  相似文献

Static lattice energy calculations (SLEC), based on empirical interatomic potentials, have been performed for a set of 800 different structures in a 2 × 2 × 4 supercell of C2/c diopside with compositions between diopside and jadeite, and with different states of order of the exchangeable Na/Ca and Mg/Al cations. Excess static energies of these structures have been cluster expanded in a basis set of 37 pair-interaction parameters. These parameters have been used to constrain Monte Carlo simulations of temperature-dependent properties in the range of 273–2,023 K and to calculate a temperature–composition phase diagram. The simulations predict the order–disorder transition in omphacite at 1,150 ± 20°C in good agreement with the experimental data of Carpenter (Mineral Petrol 78:433–440, 1981). The stronger ordering of Mg/Al within the M1 site than of Ca/Na in the M2 site is attributed to the shorter M1–M1 nearest-neighbor distance, and, consequently, the stronger ordering force. The comparison of the simulated relationship between the order parameters corresponding to M1 and M2 sites with the X-ray refinement data on natural omphacites (Boffa Ballaran et al. in Am Mineral 83:419–433, 1998) suggests that the cation ordering becomes kinetically ineffective at about 600°C.  相似文献

The structural compression mechanism and compressibility of diaspore, AlO(OH), were investigated by in situ single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction at pressures up to 7 GPa using the diamond-anvil cell technique. Complementary density functional theory based model calculations at pressures up to 40 GPa revealed additional information on the pressure-dependence of the hydrogen-bond geometry and the vibrational properties of diaspore. A fit of a second-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state to the p–V data resulted in the bulk modulus B 0 = 150(3) GPa and B 0 = 150.9(4) GPa for the experimental and theoretical data, respectively, while a fit of a third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state resulted in B 0 = 143.7(9) GPa with its pressure derivative B′ = 4.4(6) for the theoretical data. The compression is anisotropic, with the a-axis being most compressible. The compression of the crystal structure proceeds mainly by bond shortening, and particularly by compression of the hydrogen bond, which crosses the channels of the crystal structure in the (001) plane, in a direction nearly parallel to the a-axis, and hence is responsible for the pronounced compression of this axis. While the hydrogen bond strength increases with pressure, a symmetrisation is not reached in the investigated pressure range up to 40 GPa and does not seem likely to occur in diaspore even at higher pressures. The stretching frequencies of the O–H bond decrease approximately linearly with increasing pressure, and therefore also with increasing O–H bond length and decreasing hydrogen bond length. Hydrogen incorporation is critical for explaining defect energies, structure parameters and other physical characteristics of minerals and understanding mantle dynamics. This work analyzed the hydrogen complex defects in jadeite by the plane-wave pseudo-potential method based on density functional theory, and optimized the atomic positions and lattice constants in all configurations(different defective systems). Incorporation mechanisms considered for hydrogen(H) in jadeite include:(1) hydrogen incorporating with the O2 site oxygen and coexisting with M2 vacancy;(2) one H atom combined with an Al atom replacing Si in tetrahedron;(3) 4H atoms directly replacing Si in tetrahedron and(4) 3H atoms replacing Al on the M1 site. The four incorporation mechanisms mentioned above form the corresponding V_(Na)-H_i, Al_(Si)-H_i, V_(Si)-4H_i and V_(Al)-3H_i point defects. The molecular dynamics simulation to the ideal, V_(Na)-H_i, Al_(Si)-H_i, V_(Si)-4H_i and V_(Al)-3H_i point defects under the P-T conditions of 900 K, 2 GPa, the V_(Na)-H_i and Al_(Si)-H_i point defects under different pressures at T = 900 K, and Al_(Si)-H_i point defects under different temperatures at P = 3 GPa was performed to examine the preferential mode of hydrogen incorporation in jadeite by means of first-principles calculations. The calculations show that the averaged O–H bond-length in the hydrogen point defects system decreased in the order of Al_(Si)-H_i, V_(Na)-H_i, V_(Si)-4H_i and V_(Al)-3H_i. V_(Na)-H_i complex defects result in a contraction of the jadeite volume and the presence of Al_(Si)-H_i, V_(Si)-4H_i and V_(Al)-3H_i defects could increase the supercell volume, which is the most obvious in the V_(Al)-3H_i defects. The energy of formation of Al_(Si)-H_i and V_(Al)-3H_i complex defects was much lower than that of other defect systems. The V_(Al)-3H_i defects system has the lowest energy and the shortest O–H bond-length, suggesting that this system is the most favorable. The analytical results of vacancy formation energy, O–H bondlength, and the stability of the hydrogen defects in jadeite have suggested that the preferred hydration incorporation mode in jadeite is V_(Al)-3H_i complex defect.  相似文献

The melting reaction: albite(solid)+ H2O(fluid) =albite-H2O(melt) has been determined in the presence of H2O–NaCl fluids at 5 and 9.2 kbar, and results compared with those obtained in presence of H2O–CO2 fluids. To a good approximation, albite melts congruently at 9 kbar, indicating that the melting temperature at constant pressure is principally determined by water activity. At 5 kbar, the temperature (T)- mole fraction (X (H2O) ) melting relations in the two systems are almost coincident. By contrast, H2O–NaCl mixing at 9 kbar is quite non-ideal; albite melts ∼70 °C higher in H2O–NaCl brines than in H2O–CO2 fluids for X (H2O) =0.8 and ∼100 °C higher for X (H2O) =0.5. The melting temperature of albite in H2O–NaCl fluids of X (H2O)=0.8 is ∼100 °C higher than in pure water. The PT curves for albite melting at constant H2O–NaCl show a temperature minimum at about 5 kbar. Water activities in H2O–NaCl fluids calculated from these results, from new experimental data on the dehydration of brucite in presence of H2O–NaCl fluid at 9 kbar, and from previously published experimental data, indicate a large decrease with increasing fluid pressure at pressures up to 10 kbar. Aqueous brines with dissolved chloride salt contents comparable to those of real crustal fluids provide a mechanism for reducing water activities, buffering and limiting crustal melting, and generating anhydrous mineral assemblages during deep crustal metamorphism in the granulite facies and in subduction-related metamorphism. Low water activity in high pressure-temperature metamorphic mineral assemblages is not necessarily a criterion of fluid absence or melting, but may be due to the presence of low a (H2O) brines. In-situ IR measurements of OH species in quartz at high temperatures   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The nature of OH species in natural clear quartz was investigated by means of in-situ IR measurements over the temperature range –185 to 1000 °C. Reversible thermal behavior of OH species was examined for a sample pre-heated to 1000 °C for 1 hour. At room temperature, the IR spectrum of the quartz sample examined includes an intense absorption peak at 3379 cm–1 which has been assigned to an OH stretching vibration associated with Al substituting for Si (OH(Al)). The major spectral changes of the OH(Al) bond involve a systematic shift of its peak position and a decrease in its integral absorbance with temperature. A quasi-linear increase of the peak position from –185 to 400 °C is interpreted to be due to the change in the vibrational frequency of OH(Al) with hydrogen bond (H bond) distance. At higher temperatures, the IR frequency shows only a slight change, indicating a small influence of the H bond. On the other hand, the gradual decrease of the integral absorbance of OH(Al) with temperature indicates a decrease of this defect’s molar absorptivity without any reduction in defect concentration. This is interpreted to result from a decrease in dipole moment of OH(Al) with temperature. A sudden shift of the vibrational frequency from 3396 to 3386 cm–1 between 550 and 560 °C and a constant value of the integral absorbance from 535 to 570 °C were considered to be related to the change in H bond distance during the structural transformation of α-quartz to its β-form. The local environment of OH(Al) begins to change at temperatures below 570 °C, where the crystallographic α–β transition occurs. Received: 18 February 1998/ Accepted: 10 July 1998  相似文献

The high temperature volume and axial parameters for six C2/c clinopyroxenes along the NaAlSi2O6–NaFe3+Si2O6 and NaAlSi2O6–CaFe2+Si2O6 joins were determined from room T up to 800°C, using integrated diffraction profiles from in situ high temperature single crystal data collections. The thermal expansion coefficient was determined by fitting the experimental data according to the relation: ln(V/V 0) = α(T T 0). The thermal expansion coefficient increases by about 15% along the jadeite–hedenbergite join, whereas it is almost constant between jadeite and aegirine. The increase is related to the Ca for Na substitution into the M2 site; the same behaviour was observed along the jadeite–diopside solid solution, which presents the same substitution at the M2 site. Strain tensor analysis shows that the major deformation with temperature occurs in all samples along the b axis; on the (010) plane the higher deformation occurs in jadeite and aegirine at a direction almost normal to the tetrahedral–octahedral planes, and in hedenbergite along the projection of the longer M2–O bonds. The orientation of the strain ellipsoid with temperature in hedenbergite is close to that observed with pressure in pyroxenes. Along the jadeite–aegirine join instead the high-temperature and high-pressure strain are differently oriented.  相似文献

As part of a wider study of the nature and origins of cation order–disorder in micas, a variety of computational techniques have been used to investigate the nature of tetrahedral and octahedral ordering in phengite, K2 [6](Al3Mg)[4](Si7Al)O20(OH)4. Values of the atomic exchange interaction parameters J n used to model the energies of order–disorder were calculated. Both tetrahedral Al–Si and octahedral Al–Mg ordering were studied and hence three types of interaction parameter were necessary: for T–T, O–O and T–O interactions (where T denotes tetrahedral sites and O denotes octahedral sites). Values for the T–T and O–O interactions were taken from results on other systems, whilst we calculated new values for the T–O interactions. We have demonstrated that modelling the octahedral and tetrahedral sheets alone and independently produces different results from modelling a whole T–O–T layer, hence justifying the inclusion of the T–O interactions. Simulations of a whole T–O–T layer of phengite indicated the presence of short-range order, but no long-range order was observed. A series of synthetic Ca-Tschermak–diopside (CaAlAlSiO6–CaMgSi2O6) clinopyroxenes were investigated by powder infrared spectroscopy at room temperature in the wavenumber range 80–2,000 cm−1. Measurable local structural heterogeneities in the crystals are suggested by the line broadening parameter, Δcorr that are observed for intermediate solid-solution compositions. The broadening is most pronounced in the high wavenumber region of the IR spectra that contains stretching modes involving the TO4 polyhedra. The effective line widths for three selected wavenumber regions deviate positively from linear behavior. This is also observed for the enthalpy of mixing of this solid solution. The relationship between “excess Δcorr”, δΔcorr, and heat of mixing, ΔH mix, behavior was investigated for this clinopyroxene series and for several other binary silicate solid solutions. The ΔH mix versus δΔcorr slope values show a linear relationship with respect to the integrated excess volume of the various solid solutions.  相似文献

We report here a single-crystal polarized-light study of stoppaniite, ideally (Fe,Al,Mg)4(Be6Si12O36)(H2O)2(Na,□), from Capranica (Viterbo). Polarized-light FTIR spectra were collected on an oriented (hk0) section, doubly polished to 15 μm. The spectrum shows two main bands at 3,660 and 3,595 cm−1; the former is strongly polarized for E c, while the latter is polarized for E //c. A sharp and very intense band at 1,620 cm−1, plus minor features at 4,000 and 3,228 cm−1 are also polarized for E //c. On the basis of literature data and considering the pleochroic behavior of the absorptions, the 3,660 cm−1 band is assigned to the ν3 stretching mode and the 1,620 cm−1 (associated with an overtone 2*ν2 at 3,230 cm−1) band to the ν2 bending mode of “type II” water molecules within the structural channels of the studied beryl. The sharp band at 3,595 cm−1 is not associated with a corresponding ν2 bending mode; thus it is assigned to the stretching vibration of O–H groups in the sample. The minor 4,000 cm−1 feature can be assigned to the combination of the O–H bond parallel to c with a low-frequency metal-oxygen mode such as the Na–O stretching mode. The present results suggest that the interpretation of the FTIR spectrum of Na-rich beryl needs to be carefully reconsidered.  相似文献

The greenschist to amphibolite transition as modeled by the reaction zoisite+tremolite + quartz= anorthite+diopside+water has been experimentally investigated in the chemical system H2O−CaO− MgO−Al2O3−SiO2 over the range of 0.4–0.8 GPa. This reaction is observed to lie within the stability fields of anorthite + water and of zoisite + quartz, in accord with phase equilibrium principles, and its position is in excellent agreement with the boundary calculated from current internally-consistent data bases. The small dP/dT slope of 0.00216 GPa/K (21.6 bars/K) observed for this reaction supports the pressure-dependency of this transition in this chemical system. Experimental reversals of the Al content in tremolitic amphibole coexisting with zoisite, diopside, quartz, and water were obtained at 600, 650, and 700°C and indicated Al total cations (atoms per formula unit, apfu) of only up to 0.5±0.08 at the highest temperature. Thermodynamic analysis of these and previous compositional reversal data for tremolitic amphibole indicated that, of the activity/composition relationships considered, a two-site-coupled cation substitution model yielded the best fit to the data and a S 0 (1 bar, 298 K) of 575.4±1.6 J/K · mol for magnesio-hornblende. The calculated isopleths of constant Al content in the amphibole are relatively temperature sensitive with Al content increasing with increasing temperature and pressure. Finally, several experiments in the range of 1.0–1.3 GPa were conducted to define the onset of melting, and thus the upper-thermal limit, for this mineral assemblage, which must involve an invariant point located at approximately 1.05 GPa and 770°C. The dynamics of the hydrogen atoms in the highly ordered kaolinite was studied by vibrational spectroscopy based on inelastic neutron scattering method with the focus on the spectral region of 100–1,250 cm−1. The experimental spectrum was interpreted by means of the solid state density functional theory calculations covering both normal mode analysis and molecular dynamics going beyond the harmonic approximation. The Al–O–H bending modes were found to be spread over the large interval of 100–1,100 cm−1, with the dominant contributions located between 800 and 1,100 cm-1. The shapes of the individual hydrogen spectra depend on the strengths of the individual interlayer O–H···O hydrogen bonds involving the inner surface hydroxyl groups. The modes assigned to the in-plane movements of the respective hydrogen atoms are well-defined and always appear on the top of the intervals of energy transfer. In contrast, the modes generated by the out-of-plane movements are spread over large intervals of energies spanning down to the region of external (lattice) modes.  相似文献

Kosmochlor (NaCrSi2O6) was synthesized by the flux method from melts along the join Na2O·2 SiO2-Na2O·Cr2O3·4 SiO2 at 1000° C in air, and isolated by dissolving the glassy matrix with hydrofluoric and perchloric acids. The join CaMgSi2O6-NaCrSi2O6 was studied at 1 atmosphere in air by the quenching technique at temperatures between 900° and 1450° C, using mixtures of kosmochlor and diopside crystals or diopside glass as starting materials. The phases are diopside solid solution, kosmochlor, spinel (Mg-chromite), eskolaite (Cr2O3) and glass. The maximum solubility of kosmochlor in diopside is 24 wt percent at 1140° C, while diopside is not soluble at all in kosmochlor, resulting in the existence of a wide range of immiscibility. Petrologic significance of the results is discussed.  相似文献

Carbon-saturated crustal fluids in the C–O–H system comprise H2O, CO2 and CH4 as the most important fluid species. Graphite precipitation from a cooling C–O–H is discussed for two different systems, namely for a fluid–rock system in which no transfer of atomic oxygen and hydrogen between the fluid and the rock is possible (closed fluid system), and for an open fluid system. Thermodynamic model calculations show that the graphite-forming reactions and the graphite precipitation potential are different for these two systems. Furthermore, the calculations demonstrate that for both systems, the following factors play a role in determining the graphite precipitation potential, i.e. (1) the redox state of the fluid, (2) the initial pressure and temperature conditions and (3) whether cooling is combined with decompression. Open and closed fluid system graphite precipitation can be distinguished from each other using fluid inclusion and stable carbon isotope studies. The results of this study provide insight in the formation of hydrothermal graphite deposits.  相似文献

Diopside (CaMgSi2O6) and pseudowollastonite (CaSiO3) have been studied by X-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy up to their respective melting points. In agreement with previous unit-cell parameters determinations below 1100 K, thermal expansion of diopside along the a and c axis is much smaller than along the b axis. For pseudowollastonite, the axis expansivity increases slightly in the order b>a>c. For both minerals, the change in unit-cell angles is very small and there are no anomalous variations of the other unit-cell parameters near the melting point. With increasing temperatures, the main changes observed in the Raman spectra are strong increases of the linewidths for those bands which mainly represent Si−O−Si bending (near 600 cm−1) or involve Ca−O or Mg−O stretching, in the range 270–500 cm−1 for diopside, and 240–450 cm−1 for pseudowollastonite. At temperatures near the onset of calorimetric premelting effects, this extensive band widening results in a broad Raman feature that can no longer be deconvoluted into its individual components. No significant changes affect the Si−O streching modes. For both diopside and pseudowollastonite, premelting appears to be associated with enhanced dynamics of the alkaline-earth elements. This conclusion contrasts markedly with that drawn for sodium metasilicate in which weaker bonding of sodium allows the silicate framework to distort and deform in such a way as to prefigure the silicate entities present in the melt. Hydroxyl in mantle olivine xenocrysts from the Udachnaya kimberlite pipe   总被引:6,自引:1,他引:5
The incorporation of hydrogen in mantle olivine xenocrysts from the Udachnaya kimberlite pipe was investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). IR spectra were collected in the OH stretching region on oriented single crystals using a conventional IR source at ambient conditions and in situ at temperatures down to −180°C as well as with IR synchrotron radiation. The IR spectra of the samples are complex containing more than 20 strongly polarized OH bands in the range 3,730–3,330 cm−1. Bands at high energies (3,730–3,670 cm−1) were assigned to inclusions of serpentine, talc and the 10 Å phase. All other bands are believed to be intrinsic to olivine. The corresponding point defects are (a) associated with vacant Si sites (3,607 cm−1 || a, 3,597 E || a, 3,571 cm−1 E || c, 3,567 || c, and 3,556 || b), and (b) with vacant M1 sites (most of the bands polarized parallel to a). From the pleochroic behavior and position of the OH bands associated with the vacant M1 sites, we propose two types of hydrogen—one bonded to O1 and another to O2, so that both OH vectors are strongly aligned parallel to a. The O2–H groups may be responsible for the OH bands at higher wavenumbers than those for the O1–H groups. The multiplicity of the corresponding OH bands in the spectra can be explained by different chemical environments and by slightly different distortions of the M1 sites in these high-pressure olivines. Four samples were investigated by SIMS. The calculated integral molar absorption coefficient using the IR and SIMS results of 37,500±5,000 L mol H2O cm−2 is within the uncertainties slightly higher than the value determined by Bell et al. (J Geophys Res 108(B2):2105–2113, 2003) (28,450±1,830 L mol H2O cm−2). The reason for the difference is the different distributions of the absorption intensity of the spectra of both studies (mean wavenumber 3,548 vs. 3,570 cm−1). Olivine samples with a mean wavenumber of about 3,548 cm−1 should be quantified with the absorption coefficient as determined in this study; those containing more bands at higher wavenumber (mean wavenumber 3,570 cm−1) should be quantified using the value determined by Bell et al. (J Geophys Res 108(B2):2105–2113, 2003).
