Special methods for processing TV images have been used to study the characteristics of nighttime auroras based on the observations at high-latitude observatories on Spitsbergen. Weak subvisual auroras (SVAs), originating 3°–4° north of brighter auroras in the auroral oval, have been detected in the interval 1900-0400 MLT. The average lifetime of SVAs is approximately 7 min, and the average velocity of the equatorward shift is ~0.6 km/s. SVAs were observed during relatively quiet periods, when the IMF B z component is mainly positive. However, SVAs are not polar-cap auroras since they are oriented from east to west rather than toward the Sun. The optical observations indicate that the SVA intensity is 0.2–0.5 and 0.1–0.3 kR in the 630 and 557.7 nm emissions, respectively. The average ratio of the emission intensities (I 5577/I 6300) is about 0.5. According to the direct satellite observations, the SVA electron spectrum has a maximum at 0.4–1.0 keV. In this case the energy flux of precipitating electrons is approximately an order of magnitude as low as such a flux in brighter auroral arcs in the auroral oval.  相似文献

As a rule, bright auroral arcs evolve near the poleward boundary of the auroral oval at the growth phase of a substorm, a phenomenon that is known to occur near the poleward edge of the auroral oval. The closeness of these arcs to the projection of the magnetic separatrix on the night side suggests that their generation is related to magnetic reconnection in the magnetospheric tail in a particular way. In this study this suggestion is confirmed by the fact that integral brightness of the auroral oval at the poleward edge correlates with magnetic field structures in the solar wind that are observed by ACE and Wind satellites at distances of 50–300 RE upstream and are shifted towards the magnetospheric tail with time delays of ~ 10–80 min, consistent with measurements of the solar wind velocity. About 50 examples of this correlation have been found. The possible physical mechanisms of the effect observed are discussed.  相似文献

A new type of high-latitude magnetic bays is revealed at geomagnetic latitudes higher than 71°, called ??polar substorms.?? It is shown that polar substorms differ from both classical substorms and high-latitude geomagnetic disturbances of the type of polar boundary intensifications (PBIs). While classical substorms start at latitudes below 67° and then expand poleward, polar substorms start almost simultaneously in the evening-night polar region of the oval. In contrast to PBIs, accompanied by auroral streamers expanding southward, polar substorms are accompanied by auroral arcs quickly traveling northward. It is shown that polar substorms are observed before midnight (20?C22 MLT) under weak geomagnetic activity (Kp ?? 2) during the late recovery phase of a magnetic storm. It is shown that a typical feature of polar substorms is the simultaneous excitation of highly intensive Pi2 and Pi3 geomagnetic pulsations at high latitudes, which exceed the typical amplitude of these pulsations at auroral latitudes by more than an order of magnitude. The duration of pulsations is determined by the substorm duration, and their amplitude decreases sharply at geomagnetic latitudes below ??71°. It is suggested that pulsations reflect fluctuations in ionospheric currents connected with polar substorms.

当I_(557.7)从0.1kR增加到10kR时,极光强度比I_(557.7)/I_(630.0)也由0.2增加到9.

The optical observations on Heiss Island (Φ′ = 75.0°) have been used to study the characteristics of auroras in the near-noon MLT sector after abrupt increases in the solar wind dynamic pressure at negative and positive polarity of the IMF B z component. It has been found out that the 427.8 and 557.7 nm emission intensities considerably increased at B z < 0 both equatorward of the dayside red luminosity band and within this band. The value of the emission intensities at a red luminosity maximum (I 6300/I 5577 ∼ 0.5) indicates that energetic electron precipitation is of the magnetospheric origin. At B z > 0, fluxes of harder (E > 1 keV) precipitating electrons were superimposed on the soft spectrum of precipitating particles in the equatorial part of the red luminosity band. This red band part was hypothetically caused by the low-latitude boundary layer (LLBL) on closed lines of the geomagnetic field, the estimated thickness of which is ∼3 R e . The 557.7 nm emission intensity increased during 3–5 min after SC/SI and was accompanied by the displacement of the red band equatorward boundary toward lower latitudes. The displacement value was ∼150–200 km when the dynamic pressure abruptly increased by a factor of 3–5. After SC/SI, the 630.0 nm emission intensity continued increasing during 16–18 min. It is assumed that the time of an increase in the red line intensity corresponds to the time of saturation of the magnetospheric boundary layers with magnetosheath particles after an abrupt increase in their density.  相似文献

According to observations, the discrete auroral arcs can sometimes be found, either deep inside the auroral oval or at the poleward border of the wide (so-called double) auroral oval, which map to very different regions of the magnetotail. To find common physical conditions for the auroral-arc generation in these magnetotail regions, we study the spatial relationship between the diffuse and discrete auroras and the isotropic boundaries (IBs) of the precipitating energetic particles which can be used to characterise locally the equatorial magnetic field in the tail. From comparison of ground observation of auroral forms with meridional profiles of particle flux measured simultaneously by the low-altitude NOAA satellites above the ground observation region, we found that (1) discrete auroral arcs are always situated polewards from (or very close to) the IB of > 30-keV electrons, whereas (2) the IB of the > 30-keV protons is often seen inside the diffuse aurora. These relationships hold true for both quiet and active (substorm) conditions in the premidnight-nightside (18– 01-h) MLT sector considered. In some events the auroral arcs occupy a wide latitudinal range. The most equatorial of these arcs was found at the poleward edge of the diffuse auroras (but anyway in the vicinity of the electron IB), the most poleward arcs were simultaneously observed on the closed field lines near the polar-cap boundary. These observations disagree with the notion that the discrete aurora originate exclusively in the near-Earth portion of plasma sheet or exclusively on the PSBL field lines. Result (1) may imply a fundamental feature of auroral-arc formation: they originate in the current-sheet regions having very curved and tailward-stretched magnetic field lines.  相似文献

The evolution of preonset auroral arcs before full-scale auroral poleward expansion (the time T0 indicates the expansion onset) is studied based on ground-based optical observations filtered by the gradient method. In one of the three events studied in detail, the preonset arc exhibits periodic poleward excursions ~10 min before T0. The excursions extend over 1° in latitude, being repeated with a period of 2.5 min (frequency 6.7 mHz), and can be explained by the theory of classical (i.e., linear nondispersive) Alfvénic fieldline resonance (FLR), which is proposed to form and evolve at the location of subsequent substorm initiation. In two other events, the preonset arc evolves somewhat differently. Having appeared 15–20 min before T0, the arc brightens and develops a fine structure in the transverse direction, with new arcs detaching and propagating away from it. Such signatures may indicate a nonlinear dispersive FLR that periodically produces soliton-like structures propagating across and away from the resonance layer. The involved nonlinearity has a ponderomotive nature. The dispersive effects become significant if, as a result of fine structuring, perturbations are produced on the scales of order of the electron inertial length or ion gyroradius.  相似文献

The characteristics of dayside auroras during the large (16–24 nT) positive values of the IMF B z component, observed on January 14, 1988, during the interaction between the Earth’s magnetosphere and the body of the interplanetary magnetic cloud, have been studied based on the optical observations on Heiss Island. A wide band of diffuse red luminosity with an intensity of 1–2 kilorayleigh (kR) was observed during 6 h in the interval 1030–1630 MLT at latitudes higher than 75° CGL. Rayed auroral arcs, the brightness of which in the 557.7 nm emission sharply increased to 3–7 kR in the postnoon sector immediately after the polarity reversal of the IMF B y component from positive to negative, were continuously registered within the band. Bright auroral arcs were observed at the equatorward edge of red luminosity. It has been found out that the red auroral intensity increases and the band equatorward boundary shifts to lower latitudes with increasing solar wind dynamic pressure. However, a direct proportional dependence of the variations in the auroral features on the dynamic pressure variations has not been found. It has been concluded that the source of bright discrete auroras is located in the region of the low-latitude boundary layer (LLBL) on closed geomagnetic field lines. The estimated LLBL thickness is ∼3 R e . It has been concluded that the intensity of the dayside red band depends on the solar wind plasma density, whereas the position of the position equatorward boundary depends on the dynamic pressure value and its variations.  相似文献

The unique spectrographic observations of auroras on the Kola Peninsula, simultaneously performed in 1970 at Loparskaya and Kem stations using C-180-S cameras, have been analyzed by up-to-date digital data processing. The position and dynamics of proton precipitation relative to other manifestations of auroral and substorm activity (auroral arcs and electrojets) under moderately and weakly disturbed conditions have been analyzed. Several previously known regularities in the morphology of proton auroras have been confirmed. It has been indicated that the direction of motion of the proton band equatorward boundary in the evening sector changes at a sign reversal of the IMF Z component. Weak breakups affect the poleward boundary of the proton band but do not influence the position of the equatorward boundary of this band, which results in the expansion of the proton emission region. When a disturbance is stronger, the proton emission disappears near an active electron arc and subsequently appears poleward of its position before intensification. Short-term proton precipitation is also observed in the region of active electron precipitation during an intense breakup in the form of N–S structures.  相似文献

The geomagnetic and auroral response to the variations in the solar wind dynamic pressure (Pd) are investigated in the periods of positive values of the IMF B z component. It is shown that the growth of Pd results in the intensification of luminosity along the auroral oval and in the poleward expansion of the poleward boundary of luminosity (PBL) in the nightside part of the oval by ~7° in latitude at a velocity of ~0.5 km/s and is accompanied by an enhancement of the DP2-type current system. A decrease in Pd, accompanied by an abrupt reversal of the IMF B y polarity from positive to negative, results in an enhancement of the westward electrojet and in a poleward shift of PBL and electrojet center. The conclusion has been made that the available three types of auroral response to Pd variations differ in the azimuthal velocity of the luminosity region or particle precipitation along the auroral oval: V 1 ~ 30–40 km/s, V 2 ~ 10, and V 3 ~ 1 km/s.  相似文献

Flow bursts within the ionosphere are the ionospheric signatures of flow bursts in the plasma sheet and have been associated with poleward boundary intensifications (PBIs). Some PBIs extend equatorward from the polar cap boundary, where they can be roughly divided into north–south-aligned and east–west-aligned structures. In this paper, we present two flow burst events observed by the new Poker Flat Advanced Modular Incoherent Scatter Radar (PFISR) in the pre-midnight auroral zone on 28 April 2007, one towards the west and the other towards the east. In both cases, enhanced flows lasted for about 8–10 min with peak velocities exceeding 1500 m/s. The concurrently measured electron density showed that the flow bursts occurred in low conductivity regions. However, near the poleward (equatorward) edge of the westward (eastward) flow burst, strong electron density enhancements were observed in the E region, indicating the presence of discrete auroral arcs. Auroral images from the Polar spacecraft were available at the time of the eastward flow burst and they indicate that this burst was associated with an east–west-aligned auroral structure that connected at later MLT to a north–south structure. In addition, simultaneous precipitating particle energy spectrum measured by the the Defense Meteorological Satellites Program (DMSP) F13 satellite reveals that this auroral structure resulted from mono-energetic electron precipitation associated with a significant field-aligned potential drop. These observations show direct evidence of the relationship between flow bursts, field-aligned currents and auroral intensifications, and suggest that eastward/westward flow bursts are associated with east–west-oriented PBI structures that have extended well within the plasma sheet. This is in contrast to the equatorward-directed flow that has been previously inferred for PBIs near the polar cap boundary and for north–south auroral structures. This paper illustrates the use of the PFISR radar for studying the magnetosphere–ionosphere coupling of flow bursts.  相似文献

The results of coordinated EISCAT and TV-camera observations of a prebreakup event on 15 November 1993 have been considered. The variations of the luminosity of two parallel auroral arcs, plasma depletion on the poleward edge of one of these arcs as well as electron and ion temperatures in front of a westward travelling surge were studied. It was found that a shortlived brightening of a weak zenith arc before an auroral breakup was accompanied by fading of an equatorial arc and, vice versa. A plasma depletion in the E region was detected by the EISCAT radar on the poleward edge of the zenith arc just before the auroral breakup. The plasma depletion was associated with an enhancement of ion (at the altitudes of 150–200 km) and electron (in E region) temperatures. During its occurrence, the electric field in the E-region was extremely large (150 mV/m). A significant increase in ion temperature was also observed 1 min before the arrival of a westward travelling surge (WTS) at the radar zenith. This was interpreted as the existence of an extended area of enhanced electric field ahead of the WTS.  相似文献

The position of the auroral oval poleward and equatorward boundary projections on the equatorial plane in the nightside MLT sector during magnetically quiet periods (|AL| < 200 nT, |Dst| < 10 nT) has been determined. The oval boundary positions were determined according to the precipitation model developed at Polar Geophysical Institute (http://apm.pgia.ru/). The isotropy of the averaged plasma pressure and the experimentally confirmed balance of pressures during the nighttime have been taken into account. The morphological mapping method has been used to map the oval poleward and equatorward edges without the use of any magnetic field model on the assumption that the condition of magnetostatic equilibrium is valid. Ion pressures at ionospheric altitudes and in the equatorial plane have been compared. It has been shown that the auroral oval equatorward boundary in the midnight sector is localized at geocentric distances of ~7 RE, which is in good agreement with the position of the energetic particle injection boundary in the equatorial plane. The oval poleward edge is localized at the ~10 RE geocentric distance, which is in good agreement with the position of the equatorward boundary of the region with a high turbulence level in the Earth’s magnetosphere plasma sheet.  相似文献

An auroral electron excitation model, combined with simple equilibrium neutral and ion chemistry models, is used to investigate the optical emission processes and height profiles of I(5577 Å) and I(7620 Å) in the 90 to 100 km altitude region. It is shown that the apparent discrepancies between ground-based and rocket-borne auroral observations of the I(7620 Å)/I(5577 Å) ratio are due to the extreme height variation of this intensity ratio in the 90 to 100 km region.  相似文献

Using optical data from observatories of the Polar Geophysical Institutes, as well all-sky TV observations at Canadian stations of ground support for the THEMIS satellite mission, we clarify whether Alfvén resonance should necessarily be present in the region of subsequent substorm onset. If this is true, the diversion of magnetospheric cross-tail current to the ionosphere, which leads to substorm onset, may be due to resonant Alfvén (or flapping) oscillations that increase in duration. This possibility is believed to indicate optically the presence of Alfvén resonance via periodic restructuring of the preonset auroral arc 3–15 min before onset at T 0 . At the latitudes of the observatories included in this study, auroral restructuring occurs as repetitive poleward excursions of the preonset arc (the periods of excursions are 1–3 min) and can be readily explained by the theory of Alfvén resonance. It is shown that this feature, while typically observed in strong substorm events, may be lacking for weaker substorms. As proved by conjugate satellite observations, the lack of auroral restructuring in the latter case may result from the weakness of the involved Alfvén resonance, which is still present but not accompanied by large field-aligned currents sufficient for visualization in the ionosphere of the apparent propagation of oscillation phase across the resonance layer.  相似文献

A model of auroral electron deposition processes has been developed using Monte Carlo techniques to simulate electron transport and energy loss. The computed differential electron flux and pitch angle were compared with in situ auroral observations to provide a check on the accuracy of the model. As part of the energy loss process, a tally was kept of electronic excitation and ionization of the important atomic and molecular states. The optical emission rates from these excited states were computed and compared with auroral observations of (3914 Å), (5577 Å), (7620 Å) and (N2VK). In particular, the roles played by energy transfer from N2(A3+u) and by other processes in the excitation of O(1S) and O2(b1+g) were investigated in detail. It is concluded that the N2(A3+u) mechanism is dominant for the production of OI(5577 Å) in the peak emission region of normal aurora, although the production efficiency is much smaller than the measured laboratory value; above 150 km electron impact on atomic oxygen is dominant. Atomic oxygen densities in the range of 0.75±0.25 MSIS-86 [O] were derived from the optical comparisons for auroral latitudes in mid-winter for various levels of solar and magnetic activity.  相似文献

A planetary pattern of substorm development in auroral precipitation has been constructed on the basis of the F6 and F7 satellite observations. The behavior of the auroral injection boundaries and characteristics of precipitating electrons in various precipitation regions during all phases of a statistically mean magnetospheric substorm with an intensity of AL ~ ?400 nT at a maximum is considered in detail. It is shown that during a substorm, the zone of structured auroral oval precipitation AOP and the diffuse auroral zone DAZ are the widest in the nighttime and daytime sectors, respectively. In the daytime sector, all precipitation regions synchronously shift equatorward not only at the origination phase but during the substorm development phase. The strongest shift to low latitudes of the daytime AOP region is observed at a maximum of the development phase. As a result of this shift, the area of the polar cap increases during the phases of substorm origination and development. It is shown that the average position of the precipitation boundaries and the energy fluxes of precipitating electrons at each phase are linearly related to the intensity of a magnetic disturbance. This makes it possible to develop a model of auroral precipitation development during each phase of substorms of any intensity.  相似文献

Multi-instrument experimental data are analyzed to determine the main processes forming a deep trough in the electron density at F-peak altitudes during a strong magnetic storm (Kp⩾5). Previous attempts to explain the observations were not successful. The model we use to interpret the data includes production of vibrationally excited N2 in the region poleward of the trough and its transport into the trough region by a southward wind. The main source of the vibrationally excited N2 is secondary electrons created by precipitating electrons. Joule heating and dissipation of precipitating electron energy create a pressure gradient and induce the southward wind. According to the model calculations, such a system of processes can cause the very strong electron density depletion observed by the Millstone Hill incoherent scatter radar on April 20, 1985. An important additional condition for such a deep trough is a decrease in the [O]/[N2] ratio. The total energy flux and average energy of precipitating electrons just poleward of the trough is also a factor.  相似文献

Summary In this paper the contribution of theF region to the green oxygen line 5577 Å glow is investigated. It is shown that at calm nocturnal conditions the ions' O 2 + dissociative recombination leads to a simultaneous excitation of the red and green lines in this region. It has been found that the intensity of the green line in theF region is about one-third that of the red line. By this non-negligible component we can explain some unexplained phenomena in the behaviour of the green line during the night.  相似文献
