Here we report a radio burst in absorption at 9?–?30 MHz observed with the UTR-2 telescope. This event occurred on 19 August 2003 about 11:16?–?11:26 UT, against solar type IV/II emission background. It is the first event where absorption was observed below 30 MHz. The absorption region, comparable with the solar radius size, traveled a long distance into the upper corona from the Sun. We show that the burst minimum corresponds to the almost full absorption of the solar radio emission up to a background level of the quiescent Sun. This supports the interpretation of the phenomenon as an absorption. The result is examined independently with the Nançay Decameter Array measurements and the Wind WAVES instrument records.

The radio emission from the solar corona is related to the configuration of the inner atmosphere. By studying the Sun at multiple frequencies, different layers of plasma in solar atmosphere are probed. We use the Mauritius Radio Telescope. The quiet Sun period, difference maps using synthesized 1D maps reveal a certain regular feature, the origin of which is not thoroughly understood and which is attributed to the solar differential rotation. For the active Sun period, the coronal emission is linked to the magnetic field configuration originating from the inner atmosphere. As expected, a strong correlation exists between the MRT 151 MHz and Nancay 164 MHz radio emission. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

The GREGOR Fabry‐Pérot Interferometer (GFPI) is one of three first‐light instruments of the German 1.5‐meter GREGOR solar telescope at the Observatorio del Teide, Tenerife, Spain. The GFPI uses two tunable etalons in collimated mounting. Thanks to its large‐format, high‐cadence CCD detectors with sophisticated computer hard‐ and software it is capable of scanning spectral lines with a cadence that is sufficient to capture the dynamic evolution of the solar atmosphere. The field‐of‐view (FOV) of 50″×38″is well suited for quiet Sun and sunspot observations. However, in the vector spectropolarimetric mode the FOV reduces to 25″×38″. The spectral coverage in the spectroscopic mode extends from 530–860 nm with a theoretical spectral resolution of R ≈250 000, whereas in the vector spectropolarimetric mode the wavelength range is at present limited to 580–660 nm. The combination of fast narrow‐band imaging and post‐factum image restoration has the potential for discovery science concerning the dynamic Sun and its magnetic field at spatial scales down to ∼50 km on the solar surface (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Quasi-periodic solar emission has been observed with a radio spectrograph operating at 18–28 MHz during weak decametric continuum on August 22, 1972. The continuum activity was observed simultaneously on fixed frequency receivers at 18 MHz and at 26 MHz. The pulsations showed a mean period of 4 s and a sharp low-frequency cut-off at 24 MHz. Spectral characteristics of these and similar pulsations observed by other workers are examined and shown to be consistent with an interpretation based on an oscillating magnetic flux tube in the solar corona.

Solar radiophysics is a rapidly developing branch of solar physics and plasma astrophysics. Solar radiophysics has the goal of analyzing observations of radio emissions from the Sun and understanding basic physical processes operating in quiet and active regions of the solar corona. In the near future, the commissioning of a new generation of solar radio observational facilities, which include the Chinese Spectral Radio Heliograph(CSRH) and the upgrade of the Siberian Solar Radio Telescope(SSRT), and the beginning of solar observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array(ALMA), is expected to bring us new breakthrough results of a transformative nature. The Marie-Curie International Research Staff Exchange(MC IRSES) “RadioSun” international network aims to create a solid foundation for the successful exploitation of upcoming solar radio observational facilities, as well as intensive use of the existing observational tools, advanced theoretical modeling of relevant physical processes and observables, and training a new generation of solar radio physicists. The RadioSun network links research teams from China,Czech Republic, Poland, Russia and the UK. This mini-volume presents research papers based on invited reviews and contributed talks at the 1st RadioSun workshop in China. These papers cover a broad range of research topics and include recent observational and theoretical advances in solar radiophysics, MHD seismology of the solar corona, physics of solar flares, generation of radio emission, numerical modeling of MHD and plasma physics processes, charged-particle acceleration and novel instrumentation.

Based on the observations of solar eclipses performed on the RT-22 radio telescope at CrAO in the wavelength range 2.0–3.5 cm, we consider the fine spatial structure of the microwave emission from the quiet Sun. We have established that the positions of compact radio sources with a typical size of about 7″.0 and coronal bright points coincide. The mean radio flux exceeds the level of the quiet Sun by 0.28 sfu. The brightness temperatures increase with wavelength and lie within the range 0.3–2.7 MK. Evidence for a nonthermal nature of the emission from compact radio sources has been obtained.

Decameter wavelength radio emission is finely structured in solar bursts. For their research it is very important to use a sufficient sensitivity of antenna systems. In this paper we study an influence of the radiotelescope‐antenna effective area on the results of decameter solar radio observations. For this purpose we compared the solar bursts received by the array of 720 ground‐based dipoles and the single dipole of the radiotelescope UTR‐2. It is shown that a larger effective area of the ground‐based antenna allows us to measure a weaker solar emission and to distinguish a fine structure of strong solar events. This feature has been also verified by simultaneous ground‐ and space‐based observations in the overlapping frequency range (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

The Gauribidanur Radioheliograph
A new radio heliograph for obtaining two-dimensional images of the solar corona sequentially at many frequencies in the range 40–150 MHz has been built by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics at the Gauribidanur Radio Observatory (lat. 13°3612 N and long. 77°2707 E) about 100 km north of Bangalore, India. This paper describes various aspects of the antenna system, receiver front end, digital hardware, the data acquisition and the calibration procedure. The performance of the instrument is illustrated with maps of the continuum emission from the undisturbed corona at different frequencies.

The low-frequency radio spectrum of the continuum emission from the undisturbed Sun is determined for 24 days during the period 1985 May-September. It is found that the spectral index varied from + 1.6 to +3.6 during this period. It is suggested that the large positive spectral indices are due to the existence of temperature gradients in the outer corona.

We analysed multifrequency 2-dimensional maps of the solar corona obtained with the Nançay radioheliograph during two solar rotations in 1986. We discuss the emission of the quiet Sun, coronal holes and local sources and its association with chromospheric and coronal features as well as with large-scale magnetic fields. The brightness temperature of the quiet Sun was 5 to 5.5 × 105 K at 164 MHz and 4.5 to 5 × 105 K at 408 MHz. A coronal hole, also detected in the 10830 Å He i line, had a brightness temperature of 4.5 × 105 at 164 and 2.5 × 105 at 408 MHz. We give statistics of source brightness temperatures (on the average 8% above the background at 164 MHz and 14% at 408 MHz), as well as distributions in longitude and latitude. Although we found no significant center-to-limb effect in the brightness temperature, the sources were not visible far from the central meridian (apparently a refraction effect). The brightest sources at 164 MHz were near, but not directly above active regions and had characteristics of faint type I continua. At 408 MHz some sources were observed directly above active regions and one was unambiguously a type I continuum. The majority of the fainter sources showed no association with chromospheric features seen on H synoptic charts, including filaments. Most of them were detected at one frequency only. Sources identified at three frequencies (164, 327, and 408 MHz) were located in regions of enhanced large-scale magnetic field, some of them at the same location as decayed active regions visible one rotation before on synoptic H charts. Multifrequency sources are associated with maxima of the green line corona. The comparison with K-corona synoptic charts shows a striking association of the radio sources with dense coronal regions, associated with the coronal neutral sheet. Furthermore, we detected an enhanced brightness region which surrounds the local sources and is stable over at least one solar rotation. We call this feature a coronal plateau and we identify it with the radio counterpart of the coronal neutral sheet.

Sunspot number, sunspot area, and radio flux at 10.7 cm are the indices which are most frequently used to describe the long‐term solar activity. The data of the daily solar full‐disk magnetograms measured at Mount Wilson Observatory from 19 January 1970 to 31 December 2012 are utilized together with the daily observations of the three indices to probe the relationship of the full‐disk magnetic activity respectively with the indices. Cross correlation analyses of the daily magnetic field measurements at Mount Wilson observatory are taken with the daily observations of the three indices, and the statistical significance of the difference of the obtained correlation coefficients is investigated. The following results are obtained: (1) The sunspot number should be preferred to represent/reflect the full‐disk magnetic activity of the Sun to which the weak magnetic fields (outside of sunspots) mainly contribute, the sunspot area should be recommended to represent the strong magnetic activity of the Sun (in sunspots), and the 10.7 cm radio flux should be preferred to represent the full‐disk magnetic activity of the Sun (both the weak and strong magnetic fields) to which the weak magnetic fields mainly contribute. (2) On the other hand, the most recommendable index that could be used to represent/reflect the weak magnetic activity is the 10.7 cm radio flux, the most recommendable index that could be used to represent the strong magnetic activity is the sunspot area, and the most recommendable index that could be used to represent the full‐disk magnetic activity of the Sun is the 10.7cm radio flux. Additionally, the cycle characteristics of the magnetic field strengths on the solar disk are given. (© 2014 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

A fine structure consisting of three almost equidistant frequency bands was observed in the high frequency part of a solar burst on 1998 April 15 by the spectrometer of Beijing Astronomical Observatory in the range 2.6-3.8GHz. A model for this event based on beam-anisotropic instability in the solar corona is presented. Longitudinal plasma waves are excited at cyclotron resonance and then transformed into radio emission at their second harmonic. The model is in accordance with the observations if we suppose a magnetic field strength in the region of emission generation of about 200G.

Fiber – or intermediate drift – bursts are a continuum fine structure in some complex solar radio events. We present the analysis of such bursts in the X17 flare on 28 Oct. 2003. Based on the whistler wave model of fiber bursts we derive the 3D magnetic field structures that carry the radio sources in different stages of the event and obtain insight into the energy release evolution in the main flare phase, the related paths of nonthermal particle propagation in the corona, and the involved magnetic field structures. Additionally, we test the whistler wave model of fiber bursts for the meter and the decimeter wave range. Radio spectral data (Astrophysikalisches Institut Potsdam, Astronomical Observatory Ond?ejov) show a continuum with fibers for ≈?6 min during the main flare phase. Radio imaging data (Nançay Radio Heliograph) yield source centroid positions of the fibers at three frequencies in the spectrometer band. We compare the radio positions with the potential coronal magnetic field extrapolated from SOHO/MDI data. Given the detected source site configuration and evolution, and the change of the fiber burst frequency range with time, we can also extract those coronal flux tubes where the high-frequency fiber bursts are situated even without decimeter imaging data. To this aim we use a kinetic simulation of whistler wave growth in sample flux tubes modeled by selected potential field lines and a barometric density model. The whistler wave model of fiber bursts accurately explains the observations on 28 Oct. 2003. A laterally extended system of low coronal loops is found to guide the whistler waves. It connects several neighboring active regions including the flaring AR 10486. For varying source sites the fiber bursts are emitted at the fundamental mode of the plasma frequency over the whole range (1200?–?300 MHz). The present event can be understood without assuming two different generation mechanisms for meter and decimeter wave fiber bursts. It gives new insight into particle acceleration and propagation in the low flare and post-CME corona.

The Sun is the only star for which individual surface features can be observed directly. For other stars, the properties of starspots, stellar rotation, stellar flares, etc, are derived indirectly via variation of star‐integrated spectral line profiles or their luminosity measurements. Solar disk‐integrated and disk‐resolved observations allow for investigations of the contribution of individual solar disk features to sun‐as‐a‐star spectra. Here, we provide a brief overview of three sun‐as‐a‐star programs, currently in operation, and describe recent improvements in observations and data reduction for the Integrated Sunlight Spectrometer (ISS), one of three instruments comprising the Synoptic Optical Long‐term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) system. Next, we discuss studies employing sun‐as‐a‐star observations (including Ca II K line as proxy for total unsigned magnetic flux and 2800 MHz radio flux) as well as the effects of flares on solar disk‐integrated spectra. Radio observation is one of important methods in solar physics and space science. Sometimes, it is almost the sole approach to observe the physical processes such as the acceleration, emission, and propagation of non-thermal energetic particles, etc. So far, more than 100 solar radio telescopes have been built in the world, including solar radiometers, dynamic spectrometers, and radioheliographs. Some of them have been closed after the fulfillment of their primary scientific objectives, or for their malfunctions, and thus replaced by other advanced instruments. At the same time, based on some new technologies and scientific ideas, various kinds of new and much more complicated solar radio telescopes are being constructed by solar radio astronomers and space scientists, such as the American E-OVSA and the solar radio observing system under the framework of Chinese Meridian Project II, etc. When we plan to develop a new solar radio telescope, it is crucial to design the most suitable technical parameters, e.g., the observing frequency range and bandwidth, temporal resolution, frequency resolution, spatial resolution, polarization degree, and dynamic range. Then, how do we select a rational set of these parameters? The long-term observation and study revealed that a large strong solar radio burst is frequently composed of a series of small bursts with different time scales. Among them, the radio spike burst is the smallest one with the shortest lifetime, the narrowest bandwidth, and the smallest source region. Solar radio spikes are considered to be related to a single magnetic energy release process, and can be regarded as an elementary burst in solar flares. It is a basic requirement for the new solar radio telescope to observe and discriminate these solar radio spike bursts, even though the temporal and spatial scales of radio spike bursts actually vary with the observing frequency. This paper presents the scaling laws of the lifetime and bandwidth of solar radio spike bursts with respect to the observing frequency, which provide some constraints for the new solar radio telescopes, and help us to select the rational telescope parameters. Besides, we propose a spectrum-image combination mode as the best observation mode for the next-generation solar radio telescopes with high temporal, spectral, and spatial resolutions, which may have an important significance for revealing the physical essence of the various non-thermal processes in violent solar eruptions.

Magnetic fields control the inconstant Sun. The key to understanding solar variability and its direct impact on the Earth rests with understanding all aspects of these magnetic fields. The Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST) has been design specifically for magnetic remote sensing. Its collecting area, spatial resolution, scattered light, polarization properties, and wavelength performance all insure ATST will be able to observe magnetic fields at all heights in the solar atmosphere from photosphere to corona. After several years of design efforts, ATST has been approved by the U.S. National Science Foundation to begin construction with a not to exceed cost cap of approximately $298M. Work packages for major telescope components will be released for bid over the next several months. An application for a building permit has been submitted (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
