The East African Orogen involves a collage of Proterozoic microcontinents and arc terranes that became wedged between older cratonic blocks during the assembly of Gondwana. The Ediacaran-Cambrian Ambalavao and Maevarano Suites in Madagascar were emplaced during the waning orogenic stages and consist of weakly deformed to undeformed plutonic rocks and dykes of mainly porphyritic granite but also gabbro, diorite and charnockite.U-Pb geochronological data date emplacement of the Ambalavao Suite to between ca.580 Ma and 540 Ma and the Maevarano Suite to between ca.537 Ma and522 Ma.Major and trace element concentrations are consistent with emplacement in a syn-to postcollisional tectonic setting as A-type(anorogenic) suites.Oxygen(δ~(18)O of 5.27‰-7.45‰) and hafnium(ε_(Hf)(t) of-27.8 to-12.3) isotopic data from plutons in the Itremo and Antananarivo Domains are consistent with incorporation of an ancient crustal source.More primitive δ~(18)O(5.27‰-5.32‰) andε_(Hf)(t)(+0.0 to+0.2) isotopic values recorded in samples collected from the Ikalamavony Domain demonstrate the isotopic variation of basement sources present in the Malagasy crust. The Hf isotopic composition of Malagasy zircon are unlike more juvenile Ediacaran-Cambrian zircon sou rces elsewhere in the East African Orogen and,as such,Madagascar represents a distinct and identifiable detrital zircon source region in Phanerozoic sedimentary provenance studies.Taken together, these data indicate that high-T crustal anatexis, crustal assimilation and interaction of crustal material with mantle-derived melts were the processes operating during magma emplacement. This magmatism was coeval with polyphase deformation throughout Madagascar during the amalgamation of Gondwana and magmatism is interpreted to reflect lithospheric delamination of an extensive orogenic plateau.

U-Pb data are reported for nine suites of zircons and three monazites from the Paleozoic orogen in western Galicia (NW Spain): one paragneiss and six orthogneisses from the early Paleozoic basement, and two Carboniferous (ca. 310 Ma old) intrusions of two-mica granite. New whole-rock Rb-Sr analyses, along with earlier data, indicate an age of ca. 470-440 Ma (Ordovician) for the emplacement of the granitic precursors of the orthogneisses. Monazite from the paragneiss also yields an U-Pb age of ca. 470 Ma. For all nine investigated suites of zircons the U-Pb systematics signal the presence of a minor proportion of Precambrian zircon. The zircon data from two orthogneisses and the paragneiss display roughly linear arrays with upper intercepts between about 3.0 Ga and 2.0 Ga, and lower intercepts between ca. 480 and 460 Ma; the former are interpreted as approaching the age of the old zircon component, and the latter as reflecting either the time of crystallization of new zircons from the magma (orthogneisses), or the time of radiogenic lead loss from the old zircons (paragneiss). The suites of zircons from all other investigated orthogneisses suffered isotopic disturbance posterior to the granite emplacement 470-440 Ma ago, in most cases leading to ‘false’ discordias without geochronological significance. Similarly, the zircons of the two investigated two-mica granites do not produce meaningful discordias because of post-Paleozoic disturbance. The monazite U-Pb systems of the latter granites indicate (sub)recent lead loss. From the high initial 87Sr86Sr ratios an involvement of Precambrian continental crust material is evident in the generation of the early Paleozoic suite of granites, while the zircon U-Pb data give evidence of the presence of about 3.0-2.0 Ga old (late Archaean—early Proterozoic) components in the source material. Zircons from the oldest sedimentary rocks in the area, now present as catazonal paragneisses and a likely source for the granites, likewise reveal a provenance age of 3.0-2.0 Ga. The late Archaean—early Proterozoic source rocks in western Galicia probably formed part of an Archaean continental crust underlying much of western Europe, but mostly modified beyond recognition by younger events.

The southern East African Orogen is a collisional belt where the identification of major suture zones has proved elusive. In this study, we apply U–Pb isotopic techniques to date detrital zircons from a key part of the East African Orogen, analyse their possible source region and discuss how this information can help in unravelling the orogen.U–Pb sensitive high-mass resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) and Pb evaporation analyses of detrital zircons from metasedimentary rocks in eastern Madagascar reveal that: (1) the protoliths of many of these rocks were deposited between 800 and 550 Ma; and (2) these rocks are sourced from regions with rocks that date back to over 3400 Ma, with dominant age populations of 3200–3000, 2650, 2500 and 800–700 Ma.The Dharwar Craton of southern India is a potential source region for these sediments, as here rocks date back to over 3400 Ma and include abundant gneissic rocks with protoliths older than 3000 Ma, sedimentary rocks deposited at 3000–2600 Ma and granitoids that crystallised at 2513–2552 Ma. The 800–700 Ma zircons could potentially be sourced from elsewhere in India or from the Antananarivo Block of central Madagascar in the latter stages of closure of the Mozambique Ocean. The region of East Africa adjacent to Madagascar in Gondwana reconstructions (the Tanzania craton) is rejected as a potential source as there are no known rocks here older than 3000 Ma, and no detrital grains in our samples sourced from Mesoproterozoic and early Neoproterozoic rocks that are common throughout central east Africa. In contrast, coeval sediments 200 km west, in the Itremo sheet of central Madagascar, have detrital zircon age profiles consistent with a central East African source, suggesting that two late Neoproterozoic provenance fronts pass through east Madagascar at approximately the position of the Betsimisaraka suture. These observations support an interpretation that the Betsimisaraka suture separates rocks that were derived from different locations within, or at the margins of, the Mozambique Ocean basin and therefore, that the suture is the site of subduction of a strand of Mozambique Ocean crust.

New U-Pb single-zircon geochronology undertaken on tonalitic gneisses, granite sheets, migmatites and metasediments from the Lewisian Gneiss Complex on the mainland and the northern part of the Outer Hebrides, NW Scotland, have been used to test the correlation of so-called Laxfordian events across the complex from the Outer Hebrides to the mainland, and the current model for the evolution of the complex as a whole. The study has revealed that the granite sheets originated in two quite different melting events. Those on the mainland at Loch Laxford are ca. 1,855 Ma old whereas those on Harris and Lewis, with which they are presently correlated, are ca. 1,675 Ma old. Grey gneisses associated with granites on the south side of Loch Laxford are confirmed to belong to the 'northern region'. A migmatitic grey gneiss on Harris has given a protolith age of ca. 3,125 Ma, the currently oldest recognised in the complex. Detrital zircons in the Leverburgh and Langavat belts range in age from 2,780 to 1,880 Ma and unequivocally demonstrate deposition in the Palaeoproterozoic. The granulite facies metamorphism in this block is dated from zircon overgrowths at ca. 1,880 Ma. The Laxford Shear Zone which separates the northern and central regions is interpreted to have evolved post-1,860 Ma, during amphibolite facies metamorphism accompanying deformation which took place at ca. 1,740 Ma in both regions. On Harris, the Langavat-Finsbay shear zone developed after 1,675 Ma when a ca. 1,880-Ma granulite facies Proterozoic arc was juxtaposed against amphibolite facies Archaean rocks to the north. Therefore, the shear zones which bound tectonic blocks in the Lewisian Complex evolved at different times and can be interpreted as terrane boundaries. The new data confirm that the Lewisian Complex was not constructed from one contiguous piece of Archaean crust reworked in the Proterozoic but was progressively assembled from several discrete terranes during the Proterozoic. Accordingly, the former regional divisions of the Lewisian Complex are here renamed as follows. On the mainland, the northern region is called the Rhiconich terrane, and the central region the Assynt terrane. On the Outer Hebrides, the Archaean gneisses of Lewis and the northern part of Harris comprise the Tarbert terrane, whereas the newly accreted Proterozoic blocks are called the Roineabhal terrane in Harris and the Niss terrane in the north on Lewis. Wider correlations show that the geology of the Outer Hebrides has more in common with East Greenland than mainland Scotland on the eastern side of the Minch Fault.

The Vohibory Block of south‐western Madagascar is part of the East African Orogen, the formation of which is related to the assembly of the Gondwana supercontinent. It is dominated by metabasic rocks, which have chemical compositions similar to those of recent basalts from a mid‐ocean ridge, back‐arc setting and island‐arc setting. The age of formation of protolith basalts has been dated at 850–700 Ma by U–Pb SHRIMP analysis of magmatic cores in zircon, pointing to an origin related to the Neoproterozoic Mozambique Ocean. The metabasic rocks are interpreted as representing components of an island arc with an associated back‐arc basin. In the early stage of the Pan‐African orogeny, these rocks experienced high‐pressure amphibolite to granulite facies metamorphism (9–12 kbar, 750–880 °C), dated at 612 ± 5 Ma from metamorphic rims in zircon. The metamorphism was most likely related to accretion of the arc terrane to the margin of the Azania microcontinent (Proto‐Madagascar) and closure of the back‐arc basin. The main metamorphism is significantly older than high‐temperature metamorphism in other tectonic units of southern Madagascar, indicating a distinct tectono‐metamorphic history.

The eastern margin of the East European Craton (EEC) has a long lasting geological record of Precambrian age. Archaean and Proterozoic strata are exposed in the western fold-and-thrust belt of the Uralides and are known from drill cores and geophysical data below the Palaeozoic cover in the Uralides and its western foredeep. In the southern Uralides, sedimentary, metamorphic and magmatic rocks of Riphean and Vendian age occur in the Bashkirian Mega-anticlinorium (BMA) and the Beloretzk Terrane. In the eastern part of the BMA (Yamantau anticlinorium) and the Beloretzk Terrane, K-Ar ages of the <2-µm-size fraction of phyllites (potassic white mica) and slates (illite) give evidence for a complex pre-Uralian metamorphic and deformational history of the Precambrian basement at the southeastern margin of the EEC. Interpretation of the K-Ar ages considered the variation of secondary foliation and the diagenetic to metamorphic grade. In the Yamantau anticlinorium, the greenschist-facies metamorphism of the Mesoproterozoic siliciclastic rocks is of Early Neoproterozoic origin (about 970 Ma) and the S1 cleavage formation of Late Neoproterozoic (about 550 Ma). The second wide-spaced cleavage is of Uralian origin. In the central and western part of the BMA, the diagenetic to incipient metamorphic grade developed in Late Neoproterozoic time. In post-Uralian time, Proterozoic siliciclastic rocks with a cleavage of Uralian age have not been exhumed to the surface of the BMA. Late Neoproterozoic thrusts and faults within the eastern margin of the EEC are reactivated during the Uralian deformation.

Geochemical and Sm‐Nd isotopic data, and 19 ion‐microprobe U‐Pb zircon dates are reported for gneiss and granite from the eastern part of the Albany‐Fraser Orogen. The orogen is dominated by granitic rocks derived from sources containing both Late Archaean and mantle‐derived components. Four major plutonic episodes have been identified at ca 2630 Ma, 1700–1600 Ma, ca 1300 Ma and ca 1160 Ma. Orthogneiss, largely derived from ca 2630 Ma and 1700–1600 Ma granitic precursors, forms a belt along the southeastern margin of the Yilgarn Craton. These rocks, together with gabbro of the Fraser Complex, were intruded by granitic magmas and metamorphosed in the granulite facies at ca 1300 Ma. They were then rapidly uplifted and transported westward along low‐angle thrust faults over the southeastern margin of the Yilgarn Craton. Between ca 1190 and 1130 Ma, granitic magmas were intruded throughout the eastern part of the orogen. These new data are integrated into a review of the geological evolution of the Albany‐Fraser Orogen and adjacent margin of eastern Antarctica, and possibly related rocks in the Musgrave Complex and Gawler Craton.

Granulites are developed in various tectonic settings and during different geological periods, and have been used for continental correlation within supercontinent models. In this context the Balaram-Kui-Surpagla-Kengora granulites of the South Delhi Terrane of the Aravalli Mobile Belt of northwestern India are significant. The granulites occur as shear zone bounded lensoidal bodies within low-grade rocks of the South Delhi Terrane and comprise pelitic and calcareous granulites, a gabbro-norite-basic granulite suite and multiple phases of granites of the Ambaji suite. The granulites have undergone three major phases of folding and shearing. The F1 and F2 folds are coaxial along NE-SW axis, and F3 folds are developed across the former along NW-SE axis. Thus, various types of interference patterns are produced. The granulite facies metamorphism is marked by a spinel–cordierite–garnet–sillimanite–quartz assemblage with melt phase and is synkinematic to the F1 phase of folding. The peak thermobarometric condition is set at ≥850 °C and 5.5–6.8 kb. The granulites have been exhumed through thrusting along multiple ductile shear zones during syn- to post-F2 folding. Late-stage shearing has produced cataclasites and pseudotachylites. Sensitive High Resolution Ion MicroProbe (SHRIMP) U–Pb dating of zircon from pelitic granulites and synkinematically emplaced granites indicate that: (1) the sedimentary succession of the South Delhi Terrane was deposited between 1240 and 860 Ma with detritus derived from magmatic sources with ages between 1620 and 1240 Ma; (2) folding and granulite metamorphism have taken place between ca. 860 and 800 Ma, and exhumation at around ca. 800–760 Ma; and (3) the last phase of granitic activity occurred at ca. 759 Ma. This shows, for the first time, that the granulites of the South Delhi Terrane are much younger than those of the Sandmata Granulite Complex of the northern part of the Aravalli Mobile Belt, the Saussar granulites of the Central India Mobile Belt and the Eastern Ghats Mobile Belt. Instead, they show similarities to the Neoproterozoic granulites of the Circum Indian Orogens that include the East African Orogen (East Africa and Madagascar), the Southern Granulite Terrane of India and much of Sri Lanka. We suggest that the South Delhi Basin probably marks a trace of the proto-Mozambique Ocean in NW India within Gondwana, that closed when the Marwar Craton, arc fragments (Bemarivo Belt in Madagascar and the Seychelles) and components of the Arabian-Nubian Shield collided with the Aravalli-Bundelkhand Protocontinent at ca. 850–750 Ma.

The Palaeoproterozoic Usagaran Orogen of Tanzania contains the Earth's oldest reported examples of subduction-related eclogite facies rocks. Detailed field mapping of gneisses exposed in the high-grade, eclogite-bearing part of the orogen (the Isimani Suite) indicates a complex deformation and thermal history. Deformation in the Isimani Suite can be broadly subdivided into five events. The first of these (D1), associated with formation of eclogite facies metamorphism, is strongly overprinted by a pervasive deformation (D2) at amphibolite facies conditions, which resulted in the accumulation of high strains throughout all of the exposed Isimani rocks. The geometry of foliations and lineations developed during D2 deformation are variable and have different shear directions that enable five D2 domains to be identified. Analysis of these domains indicates a geometrical and kinematic pattern that is interpreted to have formed by strain and kinematic partitioning during sinistral transpression. U–Pb SHRIMP zircon ages from a post-D2 granite and previously published geochronological data from the Usagaran eclogites indicate this deformation took place between 2000 ± 1 Ma and 1877 ± 7 Ma (at 1σ error). Subsequent greenschist facies deformation, localised as shear zones on boundaries separating D2 domains, have both contractional and extensional geometries that indicate post-1877 Ma reactivation of the Isimani Suite. This reactivation may have taken place during Palaeoproterozoic exhumation of the Usagaran Orogen or may be the result of deformation associated with the Neoproterozoic East African Orogen.U–Th–Pb SHRIMP zircon ages from an Isimani gneiss sample and xenocrysts in a “post-tectonic” granite yield 2.7 Ga ages and are similar to published Nd model ages from both the Tanzanian Craton and gneiss exposed east of the Usagaran belt in the East African Orogen. These age data indicate that the Isimani Suite of the Usagaran Orogen reflects reworking of Archaean continental crust. The extensive distribution of 2.7 Ga crust in both the footwall and hangingwall of the Usagaran Orogen can only be explained by the collision of two continents if the continents fortuitously had the same protolith ages. We propose that a more likely scenario is that the protoliths of the mafic eclogites were erupted in a marginal basin setting as either oceanic crust, or as limited extrusions along the rifted margin of the Tanzanian Craton. The Usagaran Orogen may therefore reflect the mid-Palaeoproterozoic reassembly of a continental ribbon partially or completely rifted off the craton and separated from it by a marginal basin.

The Pine Creek Orogen, located on the exposed northern periphery of the North Australian Craton, comprises a thick succession of variably metamorphosed Palaeoproterozoic siliciclastic and carbonate sedimentary and volcanic rocks, which were extensively intruded by mafic and granitic rocks. Exposed Neoarchean basement is rare in the Pine Creek Orogen and the North Australian Craton in general. However, recent field mapping, in conjunction with new SHRIMP U–Pb zircon data for six granitic gneiss samples, have identified previously unrecognised Neoarchean crystalline crust in the Nimbuwah Domain, the eastern-most region of the Pine Creek Orogen. Four samples from the Myra Falls and Caramal Inliers, the Cobourg Peninsula, and the Kakadu region have magmatic crystallisation ages in the range 2527–2510 Ma. An additional sample, from northeast Myra Falls Inlier, yielded a magmatic crystallisation age of 2671 ± 3 Ma, the oldest exposed Archean basement yet recognised in the North Australian Craton. These results are consistent with previously determined magmatic ages for known outcropping and subcropping crystalline basement some 200 km to the west. A sixth sample yielded a magmatic crystallisation age of 2640 ± 4 Ma. The ca. 2670 Ma and ca. 2640 Ma samples have ca. 2500 Ma metamorphic zircon rims, consistent with metamorphism broadly coeval with emplacement of the volumetrically dominant ca. 2530–2510 Ma granites and granitic gneisses. Neoarchean zircon detritus, particularly in the ca. 2530–2510 Ma and ca. 2670–2640 Ma age span, are an almost ubiquitous feature of detrital zircon spectra of unconformably overlying metamorphosed Palaeoproterozoic strata of the Pine Creek Orogen, and of local post-tectonic Proterozoic sequences, consistent with this local provenance. Neoarchean zircon is also a common detrital component in Palaeoproterozoic sedimentary units across much of the North Australian Craton suggesting the existence of an extensive, if not contiguous, Neoarchean crystalline basement underlying not only a large part of the Pine Creek Orogen, but also much of the North Australian Craton.

Contacts between Archaean granites and greenstones in the northeastern part of the Pilbara Craton have been described as intrusive and tectonic. New field observations in the Shay Gap region demonstrate that greenstones of the Gorge Creek Group unconformably overlie the Muccan and Warrawagine batholiths. Regionally, the unconformity is marked by a persistent but relatively thin basal clastic sequence, locally with a granite boulder conglomerate, overlain by ore‐bearing banded iron‐formation, fine‐grained clastic rocks and chert. The granite basement is dated at 3443 ± 6 Ma. The precise age of the hiatus is unknown but its maximum effect might have been the removal of a substantial thickness of Early to Middle Archaean strata.

The Archaean granite‐greenstone rocks of the Marymia Inlier outcrop within Proterozoic rocks forming the Capricorn Orogen. Five major deformation events are recognised in the rocks of the Plutonic Well and Baumgarten greenstone belts. The first two events were Late Archaean and synchronous with major epithermal gold mineralisation in the belts. Palaeoproterozoic extensional faulting was probably related to the early stages of the Capricorn Orogeny. The fourth event records a compressional phase of the Capricorn Orogeny associated with greenschist‐facies metamorphism, whereas the last major event involved wrench faulting associated with minor folding. The Archaean tectonic history, rock types and timing of mineralisation strongly suggest that the Marymia Inlier is part of the Yilgarn Craton, and that each of the provinces in the craton experienced the same geological history since 2.72 Ga. The inlier is now interpreted to include two components; one is the eastern or northern extension of either the Narryer Terrane, Murchison Province or Southern Cross Province, and the other is the northwestern extension of the Eastern Goldfields Province. The Jenkin Fault, which was active in Proterozoic times, separates these two components.

S-type granites are typical features of collisional orogenic belts and could provide insights into the tectonic process associated with the final phase of orogeny. The East Qinling Orogen, one of significant segments in the Central China Orogen, witnessed complex tectonic evolution during the Late Mesozoic. The rare S-type granites in this orogen can be used as important proxies to understand the Late Mesozoic tectonic processes. Although a few previous studies suggested that the Huangbeiling pluton in the East Qinling Orogen might be S-type granite, detailed studies are lacking. Thus, we report the results from a systematic petrological, whole-rock geochemical and zircon U-Pb-Lu-Hf isotopic studies on the Huangbeiling pluton, with a view to constrain the timing of magmatism, petrogenetic evolution and genetic type, and to evaluate the implications for Late Mesozoic tectonic evolution of the East Qinling Orogen. Zircon U-Pb analysis yield 206Pb/238U spot ages in the range of 156.7–132.2 Ma, with weighted 206Pb/238U mean ages varying from 146.8 to 141.9 Ma, suggesting the Huangbeiling pluton formed during the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous. Zircon Lu-Hf isotopic data show negative εHf(t) values of ?21.5 to ?14.9 and two-stage Hf model ages of 2546–2131 Ma, which are correlated with the Neoarchean to Paleoproterozoic (3.0–2.1 Ga) meta-sedimentary rocks from nearby Taihua Group, indicating that the magma was sourced from reworked ancient crustal components involving meta-sedimentary rocks. Whole-rock geochemical data display enrichment of LREEs, Pb, Hf and Y as well as depletion in HREEs, Ba and HFSEs (e.g., Ta, P, Ti), with weakly negative Eu anomalies. The Huangbeiling granitoids are identified as S-type granites, which generated through partial melting of lower-middle crust and upper crustal fractional crystallization in syn-collisional settings. In conjunction with published information related to the tectonic evolution of the East Qinling Orogen, we propose that the Late Mesozoic Huangbeiling S-type granites might response to the complex tectonic evolution related to extensional tectonics induced by multi-directional (intra-continental) subductions from the Yangtze and North China Cratons as well as the Paleo-Pacific Plate during the Late Mesozoic.

The Neoproterozoic East African Orogen reflects closure of the Mozambique Ocean and collision of the Congo and Dharwar cratons. This palaeogeographical change and its environmental consequences are poorly understood, but new detrital zircon ages from Madagascar and published data from elsewhere provide evidence for multiple ocean basins and two-stage collision. We propose that central Madagascar rifted from the Congo Craton and crossed a Palaeomozambique Ocean to collide with the Dharwar Craton at c. 700 Ma, opening a Neomozambique Ocean in its wake. Closure of the Neomozambique Ocean at c. 600 Ma juxtaposed the Congo and Dharwar cratons and resulted in prolonged collisional orogenesis concluding at c. 500 Ma.

The West Amazon Craton consists of rocks of the Sunsás Orogen and the Rondônia-Juruena Province. The Sunsás Orogen comprises the western part of the Amazon Craton in South America and is best exposed in eastern Bolivia and western Rondônia and Mato Grosso states of Brazil. The integration of available maps and isotopic data together with new U–Pb and Sm–Nd analyses from 20 samples (plus 55 earlier dates), establish the timing of geologic events in the West Amazon Craton from 1840 to 1110 Ma. To unravel the complex geologic history of the study area, we primarily sampled granitoids and gneisses to develop a better stratigraphy and secondarily to narrow the age gaps between known discordances. Four periods of orogenic activity are identified within the Sunsás Orogen: 1465–1427 Ma (Santa Helena orogeny), 1371–1319 Ma (Candeias orogeny), ca. 1275 Ma (San Andrés orogeny), and 1180–1110 Ma (Nova Brasilândia orogeny). Notable is the absence of an Ottawan orogeny (1080–1020 Ma) equivalent. In the Rondônia-Juruena Province three main orogenies are recognized: the Juruena (1840–1780 Ma), the Jamari (1760–1740 Ma) and the Quatro Cachoeiras (1670–1630 Ma). Post-Sunsás rocks include Rondônia tin granites, Palmeiral sandstones, Nova Floresta basalt, and alkalic pipes. All inherited U–Pb ages of zircon and all exposed pre-Sunsás rocks in Bolivia have ages that correlate well to the neighbouring Rondônia-Juruena Province. This fact, together with the absence of fragments of older, Archean and Trans-Amazonian crust, suggests that the Sunsás Orogen is autochthonous and evolved over a continental margin formed dominantly by rocks of the Jamari (1760–1740 Ma) and Quatro Cachoeiras (1670–1630 Ma) orogenies plus rocks of the post-tectonic Serra Providência Suite (1560–1540 Ma). Almost all granulites known in Eastern Bolivia and in neighbouring area in Brazil are not basement rocks, but were formed during the Mesoproterozoic and are mainly associated with the Candeias orogeny (1371–1319 Ma). Dated samples of the Chiquitania and Lomas Manechi Complexes in Bolivia revealed a variety of ages and types of ages (metamorphic, magmatic, and inherited) indicating that those two units require more study. There is no evidence for the existence of a Paraguá Craton or Paraguá Block, which is almost totally composed of arc-related granites also formed during the Candeias orogeny. The main difference between the Sunsás Orogen and the Grenville Orogen of Laurentia is the absence in Amazonia of an Ottawan-equivalent orogeny (1080–1020 Ma). The existence of age-equivalents of the Candeias and Santa Helena orogenies in Laurentia (Pinwarian orogeny and rocks of the Eastern Granite-Rhyolite Province and the Composite Arc Belt) indicates that the connection of the two continents may have started from about 1450 Ma. In addition, the two belts may not have been directly juxtaposed, but instead, that one may have been the extension of the other during the Mesoproterozoic. The possibility that Amazonia joined the southwestern part of Laurentia also provides a good fit for the Hudson-Tapajós and Mazatzal-Yapavai-Rondônia-Juruena Provinces. This possible link to Laurentia may have started during the formation of the Trans-Hudson Orogen and its correlative Rondônia-Juruena and Tapajós provinces from about 1900 Ma.

An age of 3112 ± 6 (2σ) Ma, determined by conventional techniques on single zircons from a felsic volcanic rock from the Sholl Belt in the western part of the Archaean Pilbara Craton of Western Australia, is interpreted as the age of felsic volcanism. This is about 100 Ma older than felsic volcanic rocks in the nearby but unconnected Whim Creek Belt and is significantly younger than felsic volcanism in the East Pilbara, which took place during two distinct episodes at 3450 Ma and 3300 Ma. The present results rule out previous correlations between the felsic volcanic rocks of the Sholt Belt and the 3452 ± 16 Ma old Duffer Formation in the East Pilbara.
