Dissolved and particulate Zn and Ni concentrations were determined at 76 locations along the Yangtze River basin from the headwaters to the estuary during flood and dry seasons. Spatial and temporal variations of Zn and Ni were investigated and six major source zones were identified. The Three Gorges Dam (TGD) blocked most of the suspended loads and extremely low concentration of Zn and Ni were observed downstream of the dam. Dissolved (ranging from 0.062 to 8.0 μg L−1) and particulate (ranging from 12 to 110 mg kg−1) Ni showed similar levels of concentrations during flood and dry seasons, whereas dissolved (ranging from 0.43 to 49 μg L−1) and particulate (ranging from 54 to 1100 mg kg−1) Zn were slightly and much lower in the flood season than dry season, respectively. This was attributed to the increased water discharge during the flood season causing a dilution effect and sediment resuspension. In the flood season, average concentrations of Zn and Ni were higher in the main channel than in tributaries, due to soil erosion and mining activities providing the dominant inputs. The situation was opposite in the dry season, attributed to the contribution of municipal sewage, industrial activities, and waste disposal. During the flood season, dissolved Zn and Ni concentrations were negatively correlated with pH. Water and suspended particulate matter (SPM) from the upper reaches, middle reaches, and lower reaches of the Yangtze River were characterized by their Zn and Ni concentrations. The Panzhihua, Nanling and Tongling mining areas were considered as the most important source zones of particulate Zn and Ni. The Chongqing region, Wuhan region and the Yangtze River Delta provided most of the dissolved Zn and Ni inputs into the river. Annual net flux of Zn (10–72 × 105 kg a−1) and Ni (5.0–19 × 105 kg a−1) in each source zone were estimated according to their respective influent and effluent fluxes. Contributions of the source zones to Zn and Ni transport decreased from the upper reaches to the lower reaches.  相似文献

Total dissolved and total particulate Hg mass balances were estimated during one hydrological period (July 2001–June 2002) in the Thur River basin, which is heavily polluted by chlor-alkali industrial activity. The seasonal variations of the Hg dynamics in the aquatic environment were assessed using total Hg concentrations in bottom sediment and suspended matter, and total and reactive dissolved Hg concentrations in the water. The impact of the chlor-alkali plant (CAP) remains the largest concern for Hg contamination of this river system. Upstream from the CAP, the Hg partitioning between dissolved and particulate phases was principally controlled by the dissolved fraction due to snow melting during spring high flow, while during low flow, Hg was primarily adsorbed onto particulates. Downstream from the CAP, the Hg partitioning is controlled by the concentration of dissolved organic and inorganic ligands and by the total suspended sediment (TSS) concentrations. Nevertheless, the particulate fluxes were five times higher than the dissolved ones. Most of the total annual flux of Hg supplied by the CAP to the river is transported to the outlet of the catchment (total Hg flux: 70 μg m−2 a−1). Downstream from the CAP, the bottom sediment, mainly composed of coarse sediment (>63 μm) and depleted in organic matter, has a weak capacity to trap Hg in the river channel and the stock of Hg is low (4 mg m−2) showing that the residence time of Hg in this river is short.  相似文献

This study demonstrates the value of targeted pump and treatment (PAT) to enhance the in situ biodegradation of organic contaminants in groundwater for improved restoration. The approach is illustrated for a plume of phenolic compounds in a sandstone aquifer, where PAT is used for hydraulic containment and removal of dissolved phase contaminants from specific depth intervals. Time-series analysis of the plume hydrochemistry and stable isotope composition of dissolved species (δ34S-SO4, δ13C-CH4, δ13C-TDIC (TDIC = Total Dissolved Inorganic Carbon)) in groundwater samples from high-resolution multilevel samplers were used to deduce changes in the relative significance of biodegradation processes and microbial activity in the plume, induced by the PAT system over 3 years. The PAT system has reduced the maximum contaminant concentrations (up to 6800 mg L−1 total phenols) in the plume by 50% to ∼70% at different locations. This intervention has (i) stimulated in situ biodegradation in general, with an approximate doubling of contaminant turnover based on TDIC concentration, which has increased from <200 mg L−1 to >350 mg L−1, (ii) enhanced the activity of SO4-reducing microorganisms (marked by a declining SO4 concentration with corresponding increase in SO434S to values >7–14‰V-CDT relative to background values of 1.9–6.5‰V-CDT), and (iii) where the TDIC increase is greatest, has changed TDIC-δ13C from values of −10 to −15‰V-PDB to ∼−20‰V-PDB. This indicates an increase in the relative importance of respiration processes (including denitrification and anaerobic methane oxidation, AMO) that yield 13C-depleted TDIC over fermentation and acetoclastic methanogenesis that yield 13C-enriched TDIC in the plume, leading to higher contaminant turnover. The plume fringe was found to be a zone of enhanced biodegradation by SO4-reduction and methanogenesis. Isotopically heavy methane compositions (up to −47.8‰V-PDB) and trends between δ13C-TDIC and δ13C-CH4 suggest that AMO occurs at the plume fringe where the contaminant concentrations have been reduced by the PAT system. Mass and isotope balances for inorganic carbon in the plume confirm the shift in spatial dominance of different biodegradation processes and significant increase in contribution of anaerobic respiration for contaminant biodegradation in zones targeted by the PAT system. The enhanced in situ biodegradation results from a reduction in organic contaminant concentrations in the plume to levels below those that formerly suppressed microbial activity, combined with increased supply of soluble electron acceptors (e.g. nitrate) into the plume by dispersion. An interruption of the PAT system and recovery of the dissolved organic contaminant concentrations towards former values highlights the dynamic nature of this enhancement on restoration and relatively rapid response of the aquifer microorganisms to changing conditions induced by the PAT system. In situ restoration using this combined engineered and passive approach has the potential to manage plumes of biodegradable contaminants over shorter timescales than would be possible using these methods independently. The application of PAT in this way strongly depends on the ability to ensure an adequate flux of dissolved electron acceptors into the plume by advection and dispersion, particularly in heterogeneous aquifers.  相似文献

Streams and rivers are major exporters of C and other dissolved materials from watersheds to coastal waters. In streams and rivers, substantial amounts of terrigenous organic C is metabolized and degassed as CO2 to the atmosphere. A long-term evaluation of CO2 dynamics in streams is essential for understanding factors controlling CO2 dynamics in streams in response to changes in climate and land-use. Long-term changes in the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) were computed in the Anacostia River and the lower Potomac River in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Long-term estimates were made using routine monitoring data of pH, total alkalinity, and dissolved nutrients from 1985 to 2006 at 14 stations. Longitudinal variability in pCO2 dynamics was also investigated along these rivers downstream of the urban Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Both rivers were supersaturated with CO2 with respect to atmospheric CO2 levels (392 μatm) and the highly urbanized Anacostia waters (202–9694 μatm) were more supersaturated than the Potomac waters (557–3800 μatm). Long-term variability in pCO2 values may be due to changes in river metabolism and organic matter and nutrient loadings. Both rivers exchange significant amounts of CO2 with the atmosphere (i.e., Anacostia at 0.2–72 mmol m−2 d−1 and Potomac at 0.12–24 mmol m−2 d−1), implying that waterways receiving organic matter and nutrient subsidies from urbanized landscapes have the potential to increase river metabolism and atmospheric CO2 fluxes along the freshwater–estuarine continuum.  相似文献

The oxidation of sulfide minerals from mine wastes results in the release of oxidation products to groundwater and surface water. The abandoned high-sulfide Camp tailings impoundment at Sherridon, Manitoba, wherein the tailings have undergone oxidation for more than 70 a, was investigated by hydrogeological, geochemical, and mineralogical techniques. Mineralogical analysis indicates that the unoxidized tailings contain nearly equal proportions of pyrite and pyrrhotite, which make up to 60 wt% of the total tailings, and which are accompanied by minor amounts of chalcopyrite and sphalerite, and minute amounts of galena and arsenopyrite. Extensive oxidation in the upper 50 cm of the tailings has resulted in extremely high concentrations of dissolved SO4 and metals and As in the tailings pore water (pH < 1, 129,000 mg L−1 Fe, 280,000 mg L−1 SO4, 55,000 mg L−1 Zn, 7200 mg L−1 Al, 1600 mg L−1 Cu, 260 mg L−1 Mn, 110 mg L−1 Co, 97 mg L−1 Cd, 40 mg L−1 As, 15 mg L−1 Ni, 8 mg L−1 Pb, and 3 mg L−1 Cr). The acid released from sulfide oxidation has been extensive enough to deplete carbonate minerals to 6 m depth and to partly deplete Al-silicate minerals to a 1 m depth. Below 1 m, sulfide oxidation has resulted in the formation of a continuous hardpan layer that is >1 m thick. Geochemical modeling and mineralogical analysis indicate that the hardpan layer consists of secondary melanterite, rozenite, gypsum, jarosite, and goethite. The minerals indicated mainly control the dissolved concentrations of SO4, Fe, Ca and K. The highest concentrations of dissolved metals are observed directly above and within the massive hardpan layer. Near the water table at a depth of 4 m, most metals and SO4 sharply decline in concentration. Although dissolved concentrations of metals and SO4 decrease below the water table, these concentrations remain elevated throughout the tailings, with up to 60,600 mg L−1 Fe and 91,600 mg L−1 SO4 observed in the deeper groundwater. During precipitation events, surface seeps develop along the flanks of the impoundment and discharge pore water with a geochemical composition that is similar to the composition of water directly above the hardpan. These results suggest that shallow lateral flow of water from a transient perched water table is resulting in higher contaminant loadings than would be predicted if it were assumed that discharge is derived solely from the deeper primary water table. The abundance of residual sulfide minerals, the depletion of aluminosilicate minerals in the upper meter of the tailings and the presence of a significant mass of residual sulfide minerals in this zone after 70 a of oxidation suggest that sulfide oxidation will continue to release acid, metals, and SO4 to the environment for decades to centuries.  相似文献

Sediment samples (213 sites) collected from the tectonic-active continental margin, offshore southwestern Taiwan were analyzed for grain sizes, organic carbon, nitrogen and carbon isotopic composition to obtain mass accumulation rate of terrestrial organic carbon and carbon budget to evaluate fate of terrestrial organic carbon from small mountainous rivers on the continental margin offshore southwestern Taiwan. Terrestrial organic carbon accumulation rates range from 0.29 to 45.6 g C m−2 yr−1 with a total accumulation budget of 0.063 Mt yr−1, which accounts for less than 13% of total river particulate organic carbon loads exported from the adjacent rivers, the Gaoping (a.k.a., Kaoping), Erhjen and Tsengwen rivers. This low burial efficiency of terrestrial organic carbon demonstrated that a majority of river-borne particles together with organic materials was moved away from the study area. For the river-borne particles from the Gaoping river, a pair of depocenters in the upper slope flanking the Gaoping submarine canyon are the locations where the maximum TCorg accumulation rate were observed which hold up to 45% (0.016 Mt yr−1) of the calculated accumulation found in the study region. On the other hand, the occurrence of higher-fraction terrestrial organic carbon in the upper and middle Gaoping submarine canyon suggests that a majority of particulate organic carbon of the Gaoping river was transported directly into the deep-sea basin through the Gaoping submarine canyon. Our results demonstrated that active margin with narrow shelf and slope is not an efficient sink for the large amount of terrigenous organic carbon supplied by the small rivers, but, a transient environment for these river derived particles.  相似文献

Sulfide-rich mine tailings in Adak that are exposed to weathering cause acid mine drainage characterized by low pH (2–4) and high SO4 (up to 800 mg L−1). Surface water, sediment and soil samples collected in this study contain higher concentrations of As, Cu, Fe and Zn, compared to the target and/or intervention limits set by international regulatory agencies. In particular, high As concentrations in water (up to 2900 μg L−1) and sediment (up to 900 mg kg−1) are of concern. There is large variability in trace element concentrations, implying that both physical (grain size) and chemical factors (pH, secondary phases as sulfides, Al-oxides or clay minerals) play an important role in their distribution. The low pH keeps the trace elements dissolved, and they are transported farther downstream. Trace element partition coefficients are low (log Kd = 0.3–4.3), and saturation indices calculated with PHREEQC are <0 for common oxide and sulfidic minerals. The sediment and soil samples indicate an enhanced pollution index (up to 17), and high enrichment factors for trace elements (As up to 38,300; Zn up to 800). Finally, leaves collected from different plant types indicate bioaccumulation of several elements (As, Al, Cu, Fe and Zn). However, some of the plants growing in this area (e.g., Salix, Equisétum) are generally resistant to metal toxicity, and hence, liming and phytoremediation could be considered as potential on-site remediation methods.  相似文献

The Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers flow through the Higher and Lesser Himalayas and confluence at Devprayag, which represents the origin of the Ganga (or Ganges) river. In the present study, a vast number of temporal and spatial samples of the river waters were collected and analyzed for major cations and anions. In addition, more recent and time series water flow data have been obtained and based on these inputs, a more refined dissolved flux rates have been estimated. The Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers show significant variations in chemical compositions during different seasons. Carbonate rock weathering is responsible for more than 70% of the chemical compositions in the river waters. The chemical weathering rates show seasonal variations and are much higher during non-monsoon season. The dissolved flux of Alaknanda river is much higher (1.80 × 106 tons yr?1) as compared to the Bhagirathi river (0.34 × 106 tons yr?1). The chemical weathering rates in the basin vary between 85 and 155 tons km?2 yr?1, which is significantly higher compared to the global average of ~24 tons km?2 yr?1.  相似文献

Tropical small mountainous rivers (SMRs) are increasingly recognized for their role in the global export of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to the oceans. Here we utilize the Isthmus of Panama as an ideal place to provide first-order estimates of DOC yields across a wide assemblage of bedrock lithologies and land cover practices. Samples for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) analysis were collected across Panama along an E–W transect from the central Panama area to the Costa Rican border for 24 mainstem rivers, 3 large tributary rivers, and one headwater stream. Sampling occurred during both the wet and the dry seasons. DOC concentrations during the wet season are higher than during the dry season in all but three of the rivers. Concentrations vary greatly from river to river and from season to season, with values as low as 0.64 mg l−1 to greater than >25 mg l−1 with the highest concentrations observed for the rivers draining Tertiary marine sedimentary rocks in the Burica and Azuero peninsulas. DOC yields from Panamanian rivers (2.29–7.97 tons/km2/y) are similar to or slightly lower than those determined for other tropical SMR systems. Areas underlain by Tertiary aged sediments exhibited significantly higher mean DOC yields compared to their igneous counterparts, despite maintaining substantially lower aboveground carbon densities, suggesting the important influence of lithology. Finally, regression analyses between DOC yields and select watershed parameters revealed a negative and statistically significant relationship with maximum and mean gradient suggesting lower soil retention times may be linked to lower DOC yields.  相似文献

The current study was designed to investigate the extent and severity of contamination as well as the fractionation of potentially toxic elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni) in minesoils and agricultural soils around a Pb–Zn mine in central Iran. For this purpose, 20 agricultural soils and eight minesoils were geochemically characterized. Results showed that minesoils contained elevated concentrations of As (12.9–254 mg kg−1), Cd (1.2–55.1 mg kg−1), Pb (137–6239 mg kg−1) and Zn (516–48,889 mg kg−1). The agricultural soils were also polluted by As (5.5–57.1 mg kg−1), Cd (0.2–8.5 mg kg−1), Pb (22–3451 mg kg−1) and Zn (94–9907 mg kg−1). The highest recorded concentrations for these elements were in soils influenced directly by tailing ponds. Chromium, Cu and Ni content in agricultural soils (with average value of 74.1, 34.6 and 50.7 mg kg−1, respectively) were slightly higher than the minesoils (with average value of 54.5, 33.1 and 43.4 mg kg−1, respectively). Sequential extraction data indicated that there were some differences between the speciation of PTEs in soil samples. In the agricultural soils, Zn and Cd were mainly associated with carbonate bound fraction, As and Pb with reducible fraction, Cu with oxidisable fraction and Cr and Ni with residual phase. With respect to mobility factor values, Zn and Cd in the agricultural soils have been found to be the most mobile while As mobility is negligible. Also, the mobility factor of As, Cd and Pb in agricultural soils adjoining tailing ponds was high. In minesoil sample Cd was most abundant in the carbonate form, whereas other studied elements were mainly present in the reducible and residual fractions; therefore, despite the high total concentrations of As, Pb and Zn in the minesoils, the environmental risk of these elements was low. Based on the obtained data, a portion of Cu, Cr and Ni input was from agricultural activities.  相似文献

Due to liming of acid mine drainage, a calcite–gypsum sludge with high concentrations of Zn (24,400 ± 6900 μg g−1), Cu (2840 ± 680 μg g−1) and Cd (59 ± 20 μg g−1) has formed in a flooded tailings impoundment at the Kristineberg mine site. The potential metal release from the sludge during resuspension events and in a long-term perspective was investigated by performing a shake flask test and sequential extraction of the sludge. The sequentially extracted carbonate and oxide fractions together contained ⩾97% of the total amount of Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in the sludge. The association of these metals with carbonates and oxides appears to result from sorption and/or coprecipitation reactions at the surfaces of calcite and Fe, Al and Mn oxyhydroxides forming in the impoundment. If stream water is diverted into the flooded impoundment, dissolution of calcite, gypsum and presumably also Al oxyhydroxides can be expected during resuspension events. In the shake flask test (performed at a pH of 7–9), remobilisation of Zn, Cu, Cd and Co from the sludge resulted in dissolved concentrations of these metals that were significantly lower than those predicted to result from dissolution of the carbonate fraction of the sludge. This may suggest that cationic Zn, Cu, Cd and Co remobilised from dissolving calcite, gypsum and Al oxyhydroxides were readsorbed onto Fe oxyhydroxides remaining stable under oxic conditions. In a long-term perspective (≳102 a), ⩾97% of the Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn content of the sludge potentially is available for release by dissolution of calcite and reductive dissolution of Fe oxyhydroxides if the sludge is subject to a soil environment with lower dissolved Ca concentrations, pH and redox than in the impoundment.  相似文献

Three large-scale experimental waste rock piles (test piles) were constructed and instrumented at the Diavik Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories, Canada, as part of an integrated field and laboratory study to measure and compare physical and geochemical characteristics of experimental, low sulfide waste rock piles at various scales. This paper describes the geochemical response during the first season from a test pile containing 0.053 wt.% S. Bulk drainage chemistry was measured at two sampling points for pH, Eh, alkalinity, dissolved cations and anions, and nutrients. The geochemical equilibrium model MINTEQA2 was used to interpret potential mineral solubility controls on water chemistry. The geochemical response characterizes the initial flushing response of blasting residues and oxidation products derived from sulfides in waste rock exposed to the atmosphere for less than 1 year. Sulfate concentrations reached 2000 mg L−1 when ambient temperatures were >10 °C, and decreased as ambient temperatures declined to <0 °C. The pH decreased to <5, concomitant with an alkalinity minimum of <1 mg L−1 (as total CaCO3), suggesting all available alkalinity is consumed by acid-neutralizing reactions. Concentrations of Al and Fe were <0.36 and <0.11 mg L−1, respectively. Trends of pH and alkalinity and the calculated saturation indices for Al and Fe (oxy)hydroxides suggest that dissolution of Al and Fe (oxy)hydroxide phases buffers the pH. The effluent water showed increased concentrations of dissolved Mn (<13 mg L−1), Ni (<7.0 mg L−1), Co (<1.5 mg L−1), Zn (<0.5 mg L−1), Cd (<0.008 mg L−1) and Cu (<0.05 mg L−1) as ambient temperatures increased. Manganese is released by aluminosilicate weathering, Ni and Co by pyrrhotite [Fe1−xS] oxidation, Zn and Cd by sphalerite oxidation, and Cu by chalcopyrite [CuFeS2] oxidation. No dissolved metals appear to have discrete secondary mineral controls. Changes in SO4, pH and metal concentrations indicate sulfide oxidation is occurring and effluent concentrations are influenced by ambient temperatures and, possibly, increasing flow path lengths that transport reaction products from previously unflushed waste rock.  相似文献

Temporal changes of As concentration in surface waters were observed in some areas of the Czech Republic. Mobilized As originates from past atmospheric deposition. To understand the factors influencing As aqueous concentration and mobility the chemistry and runoff generation of a number of brooks, springs and rivers in the central part of the Elbe River catchment, Czech Republic, were monitored. Seasonal variations of As (from 0.5 to 10.5 μg L−1), Fe (from 0.05 to 3.9 mg L−1) and DOC (dissolved organic C – from 1.2 to 17.5 mg L−1) were observed in monitored stream waters with maximum values of As and Fe in the summer months at pH values 7.6–7.8. The concentration of As in particles with a diameter < 60 μm correlates with the Fe concentration. There is no correlation between Fe and As in filtered samples (<0.45 μm). The As concentration in stream water colloids depends on an increase in DOC concentration and a decrease in ionic strength. The DOC stabilizes As in solution and reduces its re-adsorption on Fe colloids and consequently As concentration in the stream increases.  相似文献

This study was aimed at evaluating the mechanical and pH-dependent leaching performance of a mixed contaminated soil treated with a mixture of Portland cement (CEMI) and pulverised fuel ash (PFA). It also sought to develop operating envelopes, which define the range(s) of operating variables that result in acceptable performance. A real site soil with low contaminant concentrations, spiked with 3000 mg/kg each of Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni and Zn, and 10,000 mg/kg of diesel, was treated with one part CEMI and four parts PFA (CEMI:PFA = 1:4) using different binder and water contents. The performance was assessed over time using unconfined compressive strength (UCS), hydraulic conductivity, acid neutralisation capacity (ANC) and pH-dependent leachability of contaminants. With binder dosages ranging from 5% to 20% and water contents ranging from 14% to 21% dry weight, the 28-day UCS was up to 500 kPa and hydraulic conductivity was around 10−8 m/s. With leachant pH extremes of 7.2 and 0.85, leachability of the contaminants was in the range: 0.02–3500 mg/kg for Cd, 0.35–1550 mg/kg for Cu, 0.03–92 mg/kg for Pb, 0.01–3300 mg/kg for Ni, 0.02–4010 mg/kg for Zn, and 7–4884 mg/kg for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), over time. Design charts were produced from the results of the study, which show the water and/or binder proportions that could be used to achieve relevant performance criteria. The charts would be useful for the scale-up and design of stabilisation/solidification (S/S) treatment of similar soil types impacted with the same types of contaminants.  相似文献

This study reports on the seepage of metals, metalloids and radionuclides from the Mary Kathleen uranium mill tailings repository. Since rehabilitation in the 1980s, the capped tailings have developed a stratified hydrochemistry, with acid (pH 3.7), saline, metal-rich (Fe, Mn, Ni, U ± As, Pb, Zn), oxygenated (1.05 mg L−1 DO), radioactive waters in the upper tailings pile and near-neutral pH (pH 7.57), metal-poor, reduced (0.08 mg L−1 DO) waters at depth. Seepage (∼0.5 L s−1) of acid (pH 5.5), metal-rich (Fe, Mn ± Ni, U, Zn), radioactive (U-235, U-238, Ra-226, Ra-228, Ac-227) waters occurs from the base of the tailings dam retaining wall into the former evaporation pond and local drainage system. Oxygenation of the seepage waters causes the precipitation of Fe and coprecipitation and adsorption of other metals (U, Y), metalloids (As), rare earth elements (Ce, La) and radionuclides (U-235, U-238). By contrast, alkalis and alkaline–earth elements (Ca, K, Mg, Na, Sr), Mn, sulfate and to some degree metals (U, Zn, Ni), rare earth elements (Ce, La) and radionuclides (U-235, U-238, Ra-226, Ra-228) remain in solution until pH neutralisation and evaporation lead to their precipitation in efflorescences and sulfate-rich evaporative sediments. While the release of contaminant loads from the waste repository through seepage is insignificant (e.g. ∼5 kg of U per year), surface waters downstream of the tailings impoundment possess TDS, U and SO4 concentrations that exceed Australian water quality guideline values in livestock drinking water. Thus, in areas with a semi-arid climate, even insignificant load releases of contaminants from capped tailings repositories can still cause the deterioration of water quality in ephemeral creek systems.  相似文献

Organic matter is an important factor that cannot be neglected when considering global carbon cycle. New data including organic matter geochemistry at the small watershed scale are needed to elaborate more constrained carbon cycle and climatic models. The objectives are to estimate the DOC and DIC yields exported from small tropical watersheds and to give strong constraints on the carbon hydrodynamic of these systems. To answer these questions, we have studied the geochemistry of eleven small watersheds around Basse-Terre volcanic Island in the French West Indies during different hydrological regimes from 2006 to 2008 (i.e. low water level versus floods). We propose a complete set of carbon measurements, including DOC and DIC concentrations, δ13C data, and less commonly, some spectroscopic indicators of the nature of organic matter. The DOC/DIC ratio varies between 0.07 and 0.30 in low water level and between 0.25 and 1.97 during floods, indicating that organic matter is mainly exported during flood events. On the light of the isotopic composition of DOC, ranging from ? 32.8 to ? 26.2‰ during low water level and from ? 30.1 to ? 27.2‰ during floods, we demonstrate that export of organic carbon is mainly controlled by perennial saprolite groundwaters, except for flood events during which rivers are also strongly influenced by soil erosion. The mean annual yields ranged from 2.5 to 5.7 t km? 2 year? 1 for the DOC and from 4.8 to 19.6 t km? 2 year? 1 for the DIC and exhibit a non-linear relationship with slopes of watersheds. The flash floods explain around 60% of the annual DOC flux and between 25 and 45% of the DIC flux, highlighting the important role of these extreme meteorological events on global carbon export in small tropical volcanic islands. From a carbon mass balance point of view the exports of dissolved carbon from small volcanic islands are important and should be included in global organic carbon budgets.  相似文献

The Huangshaping polymetallic deposit is located in southeastern Hunan Province, China. It is a world-class W–Mo–Pb–Zn–Cu skarn deposit in the Nanling Range Metallogenic Belt, with estimated reserves of 74.31 Mt of W–Mo ore at 0.28% WO3 and 0.07% Mo, 22.43 Mt of Pb–Zn ore at 3.6% Pb and 8.00% Zn, and 20.35 Mt of Cu ore at 1.12% Cu. The ore district is predominantly underlained by carbonate formations of the Lower Carboniferous period, with stocks of quartz porphyry, granite porphyry, and granophyre. Skarns occurred in contact zones between stocks and their carbonate wall rocks, which are spatially associated with the above-mentioned three types of ores (i.e., W–Mo, Pb–Zn, and Cu ores).Three types of fluid inclusions have been identified in the ores of the Huangshaping deposit: aqueous liquid–vapor inclusions (Type I), daughter-mineral-bearing aqueous inclusions (Type II), and H2O–CO2 inclusions (Type III). Systematic microthermometrical, laser Raman spectroscopic, and salinity analyses indicate that high-temperature and high-salinity immiscible magmatic fluid is responsible for the W–Mo mineralization, whereas low-temperature and low-salinity magmatic-meteoric mixed fluid is responsible for the subsequent Pb–Zn mineralization. Another magmatic fluid derived from deep-rooted magma is responsible for Cu mineralization.Chondrite-normalized rare earth element patterns and trace element features of calcites from W–Mo, Pb–Zn, and Cu ores are different from one another. Calcite from Cu ores is rich in heavy rare earth elements (187.4–190.5 ppm), Na (0.17%–0.19%), Bi (1.96–64.60 ppm), Y (113–135 ppm), and As (9.1–29.7 ppm), whereas calcite from W–Mo and Pb–Zn ores is rich in Mn (> 10.000 ppm) and Sr (178–248 ppm) with higher Sr/Y ratios (53.94–72.94). δ18O values also differ between W–Mo/Pb–Zn ores (δ18O = 8.10‰–8.41‰) and Cu ores (δ18O = 4.34‰–4.96‰), indicating that two sources of fluids were, respectively, involved in the W–Mo, Pb–Zn, and Cu mineralization.Sulfur isotopes from sulfides also reveal that the large variation (4‰–19‰) within the Huangshaping deposit is likely due to a magmatic sulfur source with a contribution of reduced sulfate sulfur host in the Carboniferous limestone/dolomite and more magmatic sulfur involved in the Cu mineralization than that in W–Mo and Pb–Zn mineralization. The lead isotopic data for sulfide (galena: 206Pb/204Pb = 18.48–19.19, 207/204Pb = 15.45–15.91, 208/204Pb = 38.95–39.78; sphalerite: 206Pb/204Pb = 18.54–19.03, 207/204Pb = 15.60–16.28, 208/204Pb = 38.62–40.27; molybdenite: 206Pb/204Pb = 18.45–19.21, 207/204Pb = 15.53–15.95, 208/204Pb = 38.77–39.58 chalcopyrite: 206Pb/204Pb = 18.67–19.38, 207/204Pb = 15.76–19.90, and 208/204Pb = 39.13–39.56) and oxide (scheelite: 206Pb/204Pb = 18.57–19.46, 207/204Pb = 15.71–15.77, 208/204Pb = 38.95–39.13) are different from those of the wall rock limestone (206Pb/204Pb = 18.34–18.60, 207/204Pb = 15.49–15.69, 208/204Pb = 38.57–38.88) and porphyries (206Pb/204Pb = 17.88–18.66, 207/204Pb = 15.59–15.69, 208/204Pb = 38.22–38.83), suggesting Pb206-, U238-, and Th 232-rich material are involved in the mineralization. The Sm–Nd isotopes of scheelite (εNd(t) =  6.1 to − 2.9), garnet (εNd(t) =  6.8 to − 6.1), and calcite (εNd(t) =  6.3) from W–Mo ores as well as calcite (εNd(t) =  5.4 to − 5.3) and scheelite (εNd(t) =  2.9) from the Cu ores demonstrate suggest more mantle-derived materials involved in the Cu mineralization. In the present study we conclude that two sources of ore-forming fluids were involved in production of the Huangshaping W–Mo–Pb–Zn–Cu deposit. One is associated with the granite porphyry magmas responsible for the W–Mo and then Pb–Zn mineralization during which its fluid evolved from magmatic immiscible to a magmatic–meteoritic mixing, and the other is derived from deep-rooted magma, which is related to Cu-related mineralization.  相似文献

The pollution and deterioration of most important vital rivers in the Katanga region, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are mainly due to the discharge of untreated industrial effluents as well as to the mining and artisanal mineral exploitation activities. In this study, the concentrations of metals (Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Ag, Sn, and Pb) and major elements (Na, Mg, and K) in mining effluents, water and sediment samples of two main rivers of the district of Kolwezi (Katanga, DRC) were subjected to analysis by Inductive Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS). The results showed that, in general, the metal concentrations in the sampling sites from the mining effluent and river waters exceed largely the World Health Organization and the Aquatic Quality Guidelines for the Protection of Aquatic Life recommendation limits. The highest metal concentrations in water and sediment samples were detected surrounding the mining effluents discharge. In the surface sediments of Luilu River, the values of 47,468 and 13,199 mg kg−1 were observed for Cu and Co, respectively. For the sediment samples from Musonoie River, the maximum values of 370.8 and 240.6 mg kg−1 for Cu and Co, respectively were observed. The results of this study suggest that the mining effluents being discharged into the rivers and the accumulation of pollutants in sediments might represent a source of toxicity for aquatic living organisms and could pose significant human health risks. The measures to establish a monitoring program and the application of wastewater treatment techniques to the mining effluents prior to discharge are recommended to reduce the load of contaminants into the receiving systems.  相似文献
