采用地形坐标系下适合于复杂地形且满足地-气耦合的静力学三维中-β尺度气象预报模式,使用08时的实测流场经变分法初始化后得到的初始流场,模拟研究了上海地区的局地流场时空演变特征。模式较细致地考虑了湍流、长短波辐射、凝结、蒸发、地表热力平衡等因子,在此基础上,使用有限元法数值求解一阶闭合的三维欧拉平流扩散方程,模拟了上海地区的SO2浓度分布。结果表明:上海的局地流场具有明显的日变化特征,受海陆温差的影响明显,日间风速较夜间风速大,风向呈顺时针旋转;在不稳定层结情况下,高架点源排放的高空污染物对地面的污染物浓度有贡献,会造成地面污染物浓度升高。  相似文献

Abstract

During November 1976 to February 1977 near‐surface wind, current and temperature measurements were made at three sites along the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Strong tidal currents and major intrusions of warmer, fresher offshore coastal water were superimposed upon the estuarine circulation of near‐surface seaward flow. The r.m.s. amplitudes of the diurnal and semidiurnal tidal currents were ~30 cms‐1 and 30–47 cm s‐1, respectively. The vector‐mean flow at 4 m‐depth was seaward and decreased in speed from 28 cm s‐1 at 74 km from the entrance to 9 cm s‐1 at 11 km from the entrance. On five occasions intrusions of 1–3 C warmer northeast Pacific coastal water occurred for durations of 1–10 days. The 25 cm s‐1 up‐strait speed of the intrusive lens agreed to within 20% of the gravity current speed computed from Benjamin's (1968) hydraulic model. The near‐surface currents associated with the intrusions and the southerly coastal winds were significantly correlated, indicating that the intrusions were initiated when shoreward Ekman currents advected Pacific coastal water into the Strait. The reversals were not significantly coherent with the along‐strait sea surface slope measured along the north side of the Strait nor were they strongly related to local wind forcing.  相似文献

Abstract

The vertical structures of the mean and tidal flows in Hudson Strait are described from moored current‐meter data collected during an 8‐week period in August to October of 1982. The residual flow in the strongly stratified waters off Quebec is directed along the Strait to the southeast, is highly baroclinic and is concentrated near shore (within an offshore length scale of approximately an internal Rossby radius). Maximum mean speeds of 0.3 m s?1 were observed near‐surface (30 m). In the weakly stratified waters on the northern side of the Strait along Baffin Island the mean flow is northwestward. The maximum speeds are 0.1 m s?1 near‐surface (30 m) and the current amplitudes decrease to 0.05 m s?1 at 100 m. The mean southeastward transport is estimated to be 0.93 ±0.23 × 106 m3 s?1 with a northwestward transport of 0.82 ± 0.24 × 106 m3 s?1. Over most of the Strait the across‐channel residual currents are directed towards the Quebec shore with velocities ranging from 0.02 to 0.1 ms?1. Current variability is dominated by the tides, the M2 being the major tidal constituent. In the vicinity of the mooring the M2 tide is primarily barotropic, progressive in nature, and has along‐channel current amplitudes varying across the Strait from 0.20 to 0.45 m s?1. Observed differences in tidal sea‐level elevations across the Strait can be accounted for by the cross‐channel variations characteristic of Kelvin waves.  相似文献

Abstract

An existing state‐of‐the‐art regional meteorological model is coupled through appropriate constituent mass conservation equations to model the long‐range transport of atmospheric pollutants (LRTAP) under restrictive constraints on atmospheric chemistry and deposition. Particular emphasis is given to the importance of a good representation of turbulence and other sub grid‐scale processes in the planetary boundary layer (PBL), both in the formulation and in the interpretation of the results. The regional meteorological model provides not only forecasts of wind velocity and temperature, but also vertical diffusion profiles consistent with the evolution of its PBL. The transport in the LRTAP model is handled by computationally stable algorithms such that the time step may be chosen on the basis of accuracy rather than stability, and the chemistry is described by a simple four‐species model of the oxidation of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. Results are presented of a sample 48‐h summer simulation over central and eastern North America, using real meteorological data and time‐averaged emission inventory data; parameters of the integration include a one‐hour time step, a horizontal resolution of 100 km and 15 variably spaced vertical levels, 10 of which are contained in the lower one third of the atmosphere. It is argued that despite the simplicity of the chemistry, the results are qualitatively realistic and the high impact of the PBL processes on LRTAP is evident. For this particular simulation, it is interesting to note the existence of a region over Nova Scotia where the deposition of sulphates is significantly greater than that which could be expected from local sources. This is interpreted as being due to the confluence of two flows that pass over two different centres of high emission ofSC>2, andas being evidence of the model's ability to qualitatively model LRTAP.  相似文献

Abstract

Surface mesonet winds recorded at 10‐min intervals are used to estimate the propagation velocities of atmospheric fronts in East Coast winter storms during the Canadian Atlantic Storms Program (CASP). The frontal motion is modelled locally as the translation of a line across which there is an abrupt shift in wind direction. The mesonet is used to detect the propagation velocity of the windshift line.

Frontal velocities estimated using mesonet winds for all cases in which fronts passed through the mesonet (two cold fronts and three warm fronts) are in close agreement with those deduced from synoptic charts. Recommendations are given for using the method as a research tool to estimate frontal motions in oceanographic studies of wind‐driven circulation.  相似文献

Abstract

Gridded fields of potential temperature and salinity, interpolated to the time of minimal ice coverage, are constructed for the Canadian Arctic Archipelago based on archived data. In order to overcome the large variations in the horizontal coverage of the observations, the gridding is performed in an iterative procedure where the horizontal correlation scales depend on the data coverage as well as on the flow field. The mean flow corresponding to the temperature and salinity fields are calculated with a diagnostic numerical ocean model. The simulations show that the relative flow through the different straits depends on the elevation difference from the Arctic Ocean to Baffin Bay, and on the density distribution and baroclinic pressure gradients. A 5‐cm increase in the Arctic‐Baffin elevation difference can double the transport. Mean values of the summer flow are a total transport of 0.9 Sv, with 34% flowing through Barrow Strait, 20% through Jones Sound, and 46% through Nares Strait.  相似文献

Abstract

This work presents the climatology of the sulphur dioxide column over Thessaloniki derived from three years of observation with the Brewer spectrophotometer. The SO2 column averages 2.5 m atm‐cm and the shielding of UV‐B by SO2 is investigated and compared with the changes in shielding resulting from an anticipated ozone reduction. Columnar and surface SO2 concentrations over Thessaloniki appear to be typical of those in major industrial‐urban regions of the world. It is concluded that, for urban regions, predictions of changes in UV‐B as a result of man's activities must consider projections of changes in the SO2 column as well as ozone.  相似文献

Abstract

Monthly mean sea‐level pressure (SLP) data from the Northern Hemisphere for the period January 1952‐December 1987 are analysed. Fluctuations in this field over the Arctic on interannual time‐scales and their statistical association with fluctuations farther south are determined. The standard deviation of the interannual variability is largest compared with that of the annual cycle along the seaboards of the major land masses. The SLP anomalies are generally in phase over the entire Arctic Basin and extend south over the northern Russia and Canada, but tend to be out of phase with fluctuations at mid‐latitudes. The anomalies are most closely associated with fluctuations over the North Atlantic and Europe except near the Chukchi Sea to the north of Bering Strait. The associations with the North Pacific fluctuations become increasingly more prominent at most Arctic sites (e.g. the Canadian Arctic Archipelago) as the time‐scale increases.

Associations between the SLP fluctuations and atmospheric indices that represent processes affecting sea‐ice drift (wind stress and wind stress curl) are determined. In every case local associations dominate, but some remote ones are also evident. For example, changes in the magnitude of the wind stress curl over the Beaufort Sea are increased if the atmospheric circulation over the North Pacific is intensified; wind stress over the region where sea ice is exchanged between the Beaufort Gyre and the Transpolar Drift Stream is modulated by both the Southern and North Atlantic Oscillations.

Severe sea‐ice conditions in the Greenland Sea (as measured by the Koch Ice Index) coincide with a weakened atmospheric circulation over the North Atlantic.  相似文献

Abstract

We present evidence of previously unresolved oceanographic features in Queen Charlotte Sound and Hecate Strait using data collected in the summer of 1990 and interpreted using a three‐dimensional, finite‐element diagnostic numerical model for two separate simulations: baroclinic flow without wind‐forcing and barotropic flow with wind‐forcing. Features include a strong, prevailing southward flow along the east coast of Moresby and Kunghit Islands, clockwise circulation around the edge of Middle Bank and a cold‐water plume flowing from the shallows at the north end of Aristazabal Island toward the south and through the trough between Middle Bank and Goose Island Bank A persistent (near‐surface) outflow into the Pacific Ocean is found near the surface within 20 km of Cape St. James at the southern tip of the Queen Charlotte Islands and intermittent surface outflows are observed across the mouth of Queen Charlotte Sound. In central Hecate Strait, to the north of Middle Bank, prevailing along‐strait currents are weak and there is an east‐west interleaving of two water masses: warm water from the west side of the strait and cold water from the east side.  相似文献

卫星反演海面风场资料能够弥补海上气象测风资料缺乏的不足,对近海风能资源评估具有重要意义。通过ASCAT(Advanced Scatterometer)风速数据与美国及中国近海岸浮标测风资料的对比分析,结果表明,ASCAT风速的均方根误差为1.27 m·s-1。比较利用近海岸浮标逐小时风速及与其相匹配ASCAT瞬时风速计算的各项风能参数,得出ASCAT与浮标的平均风速和风功率密度的残差分别在±0.5 m·s-1和±50 W·m-2以内,该残差占浮标计算结果的比例分别在±8%和±12%以内。使用ASCAT风速资料拟合的Weibull分布函数与浮标的结果较吻合。因此,ASCAT风速资料也能够为海上风能资源评估提供有用的风能参数信息。最后使用ASCAT瞬时风速数据分析了中国近海10 m及70 m高度处的风能资源的空间分布特征,结果表明,台湾海峡平均风速和风功率密度最大。  相似文献

Abstract

We present an analysis of current‐meter, sea‐level and hydrographic data collected in the Strait of Belle Isle and the northeastern Gulf of St Lawrence. From an array of moorings in the Strait from July to October 1980, we calculate a net transport into the Gulf of 0.13 × 106 m3 s?1 and show that the mean and eddy fluxes of heat through the Strait represented a net loss of heat to the northeastern Gulf. The estimated rate of loss of heat is less than the long‐term mean computed by Bugden (1981) but becomes comparable if adjusted for interannual changes of transport and water temperature. Moreover, the 1980 data permit the permanent tide‐gauge stations in the Strait at West Ste Modeste and Savage Cove to be levelled relative to one another, thus allowing surface currents to be calculated from sea‐level alone. Hence the long‐term wintertime transport into the Gulf can be calculated after fractional effects on the vertical structure of the flow are considered. During an average winter it appears that advection through the Strait can account for about 35% of the Gulf Intermediate Layer. A multiple regression involving average Intermediate Layer temperatures over 9 years suggests that winter air temperature in the Gulf, representative of atmospheric cooling, and sea‐level difference across the Strait, representative of advection, are equally important variables and together account for 50% of the Layer's temperature variability. Analysis of current‐meter, sea‐level and hydrographic data collected in 1975 supports earlier hypotheses that the strongest inflow of water with ? < 0° C and salinity between 32 and 3 3 should occur in winter. It appears that during the 1975 field program the inflow was about 0.6 × 106 m3 s?1, which is about twice the long‐term average for January to May.  相似文献

Abstract

Six‐hourly surface wind analyses over the North Pacific Ocean covering the 10‐year period 1969–78 are used to describe synoptic storm activity in terms of parameters that are directly related to the atmospheric forcing of the ocean. The cube of the atmospheric friction velocity, u3 * and the curl of the surface wind stress, curl τ, are used because of their relationship to turbulent vertical mixing and Ekman pumping in the ocean, respectively. In an attempt to isolate synoptic disturbances from mean fields, the time series of surface wind components at each individual grid point are partitioned into “high‐pass” (periods shorter than 10 days) and “low‐pass” (periods longer than 10 days) components by means of conventional filtering procedures. The two quantities u3 * and curl τ are then calculated from (a) the high‐pass filtered wind components only, (b) a combination of the filtered wind components that include the interaction between the high‐ and low‐pass fields, and (c) the unfiltered wind components. These quantities describe the atmospheric forcing of the ocean that is attributable to (a) synoptic storm activity by itself, (b) synoptic storm activity in the presence of the low‐pass (mean) flow, and (c) the total spectrum of wind forcing, respectively.

Maps of the long‐term (10‐year) monthly mean u3 * calculated from (a) and (b) are coherent across the mid‐latitude North Pacific and appear to coincide with the normal seasonal evolution of synoptic storm activity in that region. In mid‐latitudes, the values of u3 * calculated from (a) and (b) are 27 and 83%, respectively, of the value of u3 * itself. Thus, a major fraction of the production of turbulent energy available for mixing in the upper layers of the ocean comes from synoptic disturbances with a period shorter than 10 days. Maps of the long‐term monthly mean wind stress curl are quite different in that the mean wind stress curl calculated from (a) is essentially negligible. However, the mean curl calculated from (b) closely resembles the pattern of total curl (c), but with a magnitude of only 41% of (c). Thus, synoptic disturbances with a period shorter than 10 days are also responsible for a significant fraction of the Ekman pumping of the ocean.

Future studies with these data will attempt to determine whether a relationship exists between synoptic storm activity, as measured by the parameters developed in this study, and large‐scale sea‐surface temperature anomalies.  相似文献

Abstract

A simple perturbation procedure is developed for incorporating the effects of mean zonal winds in atmospheric tidal calculations. This method is used to determine the variation of the solar semidiurnal surface pressure oscillation, S2(p), that is expected to result from the mean wind changes during the course of the quasi‐biennial oscillation of the tropical stratosphere. The results are consistent with earlier observations of a quasi‐biennial variation in S2(p). Some new observations of biennial variability in S2(p) at four tropical stations are also discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

We develop a wind‐driven depth‐averaged model of the circulation on the continental shelf around the Queen Charlotte Islands. The model captures a major feature of the winter current‐meter observations: a flow in Moresby Trough against the direction of the prevailing winds. Moresby Trough is a steep submarine canyon cutting across the shelf from the Pacific Ocean to the mainland. The flow patterns revealed by simulated drifters lead to four generalizations about the depth‐averaged, wind‐driven flow: (1) the flow is subject to strong topographic steering, (2) the exchange between Queen Charlotte Sound and the Pacific Ocean is limited to small regions near Cape St James and Cape Scott, (3) the exchange between Queen Charlotte Sound and Hecate Strait is controlled by Moresby Trough, and (4) the observed outflows past Cape St James are not explained by the dynamics of this model.  相似文献

Abstract

Temporal and spatial variations of the Fraser River Plume, in the central Strait of Georgia (British Columbia, Canada), are monitored by continuous salinity sampling of the engine cooling water on two B.C. ferries. Travelling along two different routes between Vancouver Island and the mainland the ferries provide eight crossings per day both north and south of the river outflow. From each crossing, characteristic measures of the plume are extracted, such as the average salinity and the maximum salinity gradient. These parameters we then formulated as time series and used to compute cross‐correlations and cross‐spectra with the probable driving forces of wind and river discharge. The effect of the tides is examined using harmonic analysis.

Periods of high river discharge lead to decreases in the average salinity for each section, and peaks in the magnitude of the maximum salinity gradient. The correlation of the plume characteristics (average salinity, maximum salinity gradient) on the southern section with the along‐strait component of the wind is consistent with advection by the wind. No obvious correlation is found between the plume characteristics on the northern section and the wind, except during isolated events. Linear combinations of the wind and the discharge variations reproduce the general trend of the average salinities but cannot explain the level of variability. A shift to a non‐linear combination of wind and discharge improves this comparison. The phases of parameter fluctuations at tidal frequencies on the southern section agree with the expected effects of tidal currents and the modulation of the river discharge. The agreement is not as apparent for the northern section.  相似文献

利用渤海观测站风场对ASCAT风场进行检验,发现其风速、风向均有较大误差,尤其在渤海中部以外的海域可信度相对较低。为提高ASCAT风场在渤海海域的精度,基于变分方法,利用渤海观测站风场对2017年9月—2018年2月的ASCAT风场进行订正,得到空间分辨率为12.5 km×12.5 km的订正风场。并对辽东湾、渤海湾、莱州湾、渤海中部和渤海海峡5个海域风场的订正误差进行检验,结果表明:ASCAT风场订正后精度提高显著,风速平均偏差从4 m·s-1减小为1 m·s-1,风向平均偏差从-30°~30°减小为-7°~4°,可见变分方法对渤海ASCAT风场有很好的订正效果,尤其对误差较大的渤海湾订正效果最为明显。对2017年12月18日的一次大风过程进行订正分析,结果表明:订正风场可以很好地反映沿岸风场信息和大风过程中的风速极值区,并能动态监测大风变化过程。变分方法解决了海面观测数据空间分辨率低、ASCAT数据精度低的问题,能够实时监测海上大风,且对大风预报有很好的指导意义,能够为海洋模式提供更精确的初始场。  相似文献

Abstract

A depth‐independent numerical model of the Juan de Fuca/Strait of Georgia system reproduces the broad structure of the observed depth‐averaged residual circulation in the Central Strait of Georgia but underestimates its magnitude (Marinone and Fyfe, 1992). Here we present some new calculations based on a re‐parameterization of the unresolved eddies in terms of “statistical dynamical tendencies” instead of the previous eddy‐viscosity treatment. With the new parameterization, the simulated time‐mean flow is closer to the observed circulation both in structure and magnitude. While not specifically designed to do so, the new parameterization also leads to a modest improvement in the low‐pass filtered component of the flow. Based on these results, the depth‐averaged residual currents in the region are conjectured to involve a four‐way balance between the hitherto ignored effect of “statistical dynamical tendencies” and conventional tidal, atmospheric and buoyancy forcing.  相似文献

Abstract

The mid‐to‐bottom waters of the Labrador Shelf are shown to exhibit an anomalous along‐shelf temperature gradient, with warmer waters found in the north. This feature is present in summer and autumn but appears to reverse in December. Inadequate data are available during winter and spring to draw firm conclusions regarding this feature. A time averaged heat loss of the shelf waters to the atmosphere would result on average, in colder waters in the south (because of north‐south advection); however, it is shown that there is a net annual‐mean input of heat to the shelf waters. An examination of the seasonal temperature cycle at standard depths reveals that its phase is almost uniform below 30‐m depth on the northern banks of the Labrador Shelf. The limited phase variation suggests the influence of a plume of well mixed water originating near Hudson Strait. It thus appears that mixing at the entrance to Hudson Strait imparts a phase anomaly to the seasonal cycle in the north that contributes to the observed inversion of the expected latitudinal temperature gradient.  相似文献

Abstract

For a moderately large number of years of observations the quantiles of rainfall totals for individual months can be estimated from ranked values. With only a few years of observations it is necessary to estimate the quantiles from a distribution fitted to the data for all months.

The Compound‐Poisson distribution can utilise the information available in rainfall totals for all months to give reasonably precise parameter estimates for individual months. Representative parameters can be obtained from as few as 10 years of data. Quantiles are calculated from, and statistically qualified by, the estimated mean and covariance structure of the fitted parameters.  相似文献
