We review the current state of models for the optical and near‐infrared reflection spectra of exoplanetary atmospheres, with particular reference to the close‐orbiting giant planets that offer the best prospects for high‐resolution spectroscopic detection. We describe the main steps in the tomographic procedures that have been used in recent attempts to separate these faint signals from the direct spectra of the parent stars. We compare recent, deep upper limits on planetary albedos with model predictions, and discuss prospects for future attempts to detect and characterise the reflection, transmission and thermal emission spectra of these planets at optical and infrared wavelengths. The hypothesis of an extended red emission (ERE) in diffuse Galactic light (DGL) has been put forward in 1998 by Gordon, Witt & Friedmann who found that scattered starlight was not enough to explain the amount of DGL in the R band, in some high Galactic latitude directions. This paper re-investigates, for high Galactic latitudes, the brightnesses and colours of DGL, integrated star and galaxy light (ISGL), and of the total extrasolar light (ISGL+DGL) measured by Pioneer. Under the traditional assumption that DGL is forward scattering of background starlight by interstellar dust on the line of sight, ISGL and Pioneer have very close colours, as it is found by Gordon, Witt & Friedmann. Pioneer observations at high |b| thus accept an alternative and simple interpretation, with no involvement of ERE in DGL.  相似文献

We present a search for the near-infrared spectroscopic signature of the close orbiting extrasolar giant planet HD 75289b. We obtained ∼230 spectra in the wavelength range 2.18–2.19 μm using the Phoenix spectrograph at Gemini South. By considering the direct spectrum, derived from irradiated model atmospheres, we search for the absorption profile signature present in the combined star and planet light. Since the planetary spectrum is separated from the stellar spectrum at most phases, we apply a phase-dependent orbital model and tomographic techniques to search for absorption signatures.
Because the absorption signature lies buried in the noise of a single exposure we apply a multiline deconvolution to the spectral lines available in order to boost the effective signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of the data. The wavelength coverage of 80 Å is expected to contain ∼100 planetary lines, enabling a mean line with S/N of 800 to be achieved after deconvolution. We are nevertheless unable to detect the presence of the planet in the data and carry out further simulations to show that broader wavelength coverage should enable a planet like HD 75289b to be detected with 99.9 per cent confidence. We investigate the sensitivity of our method and estimate detection tolerances for mismatches between observed and model planetary atmospheres.  相似文献

Validation of global numerical models of planetary atmospheres requires simulating images and spectra from the IR to UV spectral regions in order to compare them with remote observations. This paper describes Rassvet, a 3-D spherical-shell backward Monte Carlo radiative transfer model developed for such simulations. It utilizes a new methodology for calculating atmospheric brightness in scattered sunlight by introducing the concept of an “effective emission source”. This allows for the accumulation of the scattered contribution along the entire path of a ray and the calculation of the atmospheric radiation when both scattered sunlight and thermal emission contribute to the remote measurement - which was not possible in previous models. A “polychromatic” algorithm is extended for applications with the backward Monte Carlo method and implemented in the model. It allows for the calculation of radiative intensity for several wavelengths simultaneously, resulting in improved efficiency. The capabilities of the model are demonstrated by simulating remote measurements from the atmosphere of Io.  相似文献

We have used a Doppler tomographic analysis to conduct a deep search for the starlight reflected from the planetary companion to HD 75289. In four nights on VLT(UT2)/UVES in 2003 January, we obtained 684 high-resolution echelle spectra with a total integration time of 26 h. We establish an upper limit on the geometric albedo of the planet   p < 0.12  (to the 99.9 per cent significance level) at the most probable orbital inclination   i ≃ 60°  , assuming a grey albedo, a Venus-like phase function and a planetary radius   R p= 1.6 RJup  . We are able to rule out some combinations of the predicted planetary radius and atmospheric albedo models with high, reflective cloud decks.  相似文献

High-resolution spectroscopic searches for the starlight reflected from close-in extrasolar giant planets have the capability of determining the optical albedo spectra and scattering properties of these objects. When combined with radial velocity measurements they also yield the true mass of the planet. To date, only two such planets have been targeted for reflected-light signals, yielding upper limits on the optical albedos of the planets. Here we examine the prospects for future searches of this kind. We present Monte Carlo estimates of prior probability distributions for the orbital velocity amplitudes and planet/star flux ratios of six bright stars known to harbour giant planets in orbits with periods of less than 5 d. Using these estimates, we assess the viability of these targets for future reflected-light searches using 4- and 8-m class telescopes.  相似文献

We present a brief review of the recent results in modeling physical processes in strongly irradiated atmospheres of unevolved companions in precataclysmic binary systems (PCB) and their light curves. Constraints on physical parameters of the hot sdws primaries, thermal instability in upper irradiated atmosphere, monochromatic albedos, the deficit of the total emergent flux compared to the incoming flux from hot sdw primary are briefly discussed.  相似文献

We study the possibility to detect extrasolar planets in M31 through pixel-lensing observations. Using a Monte Carlo approach, we select the physical parameters of the binary lens system, a star hosting a planet, and we calculate the pixel-lensing light curve taking into account the finite source effects. Indeed, their inclusion is crucial since the sources in M31 microlensing events are mainly giant stars. Light curves with detectable planetary features are selected by looking for significant deviations from the corresponding Paczyński shapes. We find that the time-scale of planetary deviations in light curves increase (up to 3–4 d) as the source size increases. This means that only few exposures per day, depending also on the required accuracy, may be sufficient to reveal in the light curve a planetary companion. Although the mean planet mass for the selected events is about     , even small mass planets  ( M P < 20 M)  can cause significant deviations, at least in the observations with large telescopes. However, even in the former case, the probability to find detectable planetary features in pixel-lensing light curves is at most a few per cent of the detectable events, and therefore many events have to be collected in order to detect an extrasolar planet in M31. Our analysis also supports the claim that the anomaly found in the candidate event PA-99-N2 towards M31 can be explained by a companion object orbiting the lens star.  相似文献

The standard problem of radiative transfer in a rovibrational band is formulated for an optically semi-infinite plane-parallel planetary atmosphere using a model of a linear molecule with two vibrational states. The solution of the problem describes the variation with height of the population of the excited vibrational state due to the existence of the upper boundary of the atmosphere. We seek this solution as a function of the specially introduced dimensionless parameters—the atmosphere depth and four similarity parameters—and study it for the parameter values that can be realized in the planetary atmospheres, including the atmospheres of extrasolar planets. It is shown that an increase in the optical density of the atmosphere can reduce the population of an excited vibrational state in the band at the upper boundary of the atmosphere by as much as several orders of magnitude as compared to the population corresponding to the optically thin band limit. The anomalous decrease in the opacity of the atmosphere, when only several lines of the band are involved in radiative transfer, is predicted. We also determined the accuracy of calculating the population in the approximation of the Doppler line profile. An approximate formula is obtained for the dimensionless height of the boundary of the layer in which the local thermodynamic equilibrium exists for vibrational states. We propose a model and the formula following from this model to roughly evaluate the decrease in this height due to the impact on the population of additional radiative transitions between the state being considered and the underlying state belonging to another vibrational mode of the molecule.  相似文献

The study of extrasolar planets and of the Solar System provides complementary pieces of the mosaic represented by the process of planetary formation. Exoplanets are essential to fully grasp the huge diversity of outcomes that planetary formation and the subsequent evolution of the planetary systems can produce. The orbital and basic physical data we currently possess for the bulk of the exoplanetary population, however, do not provide enough information to break the intrinsic degeneracy of their histories, as different evolutionary tracks can result in the same final configurations. The lessons learned from the Solar System indicate us that the solution to this problem lies in the information contained in the composition of planets. The goal of the Atmospheric Remote-Sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey (ARIEL), one of the three candidates as ESA M4 space mission, is to observe a large and diversified population of transiting planets around a range of host star types to collect information on their atmospheric composition. ARIEL will focus on warm and hot planets to take advantage of their well-mixed atmospheres, which should show minimal condensation and sequestration of high-Z materials and thus reveal their bulk composition across all main cosmochemical elements. In this work we will review the most outstanding open questions concerning the way planets form and the mechanisms that contribute to create habitable environments that the compositional information gathered by ARIEL will allow to tackle.  相似文献

Dissociation and ionization of hydrogen molecules and ionization of hydrogen atoms due to extreme UV radiation from the parent star are accompanied by the formation of a concurrent photoelectron flux with excess kinetic energy. These dissociation and ionization processes are the main source of atomic and molecular ions in the thermospheres of extrasolar planets, such as the “hot Jupiter” HD 209458b. The ionization processes are the most important part of contemporary aeronomic models of planetary atmospheres in the Solar System and extrasolar systems (Johnson et al., 2008; Yelle et al., 2008). We estimate the contribution of the dissociation and ionization processes due to the stellar UV radiation and the concurrent photoelectron flux to the formation of extended ionospheres around extrasolar giant planets. As opposed to models of other researchers, we calculated the ionization rates due to the concurrent photo-electron flux for the first time. It is established that, in contrast to a widely used parametrization of the photoelectron contribution (Cecchi-Pestellini et al., 2006; 2009), the rate of secondary ionization due to the photoelectrons depends appreciably on the altitude, approaching the photoionization rate in the lower layers of the thermosphere. The calculated ionization rate in the thermosphere of the extrasolar giant planet (EGP) orbiting close to its parent star is a necessary link when modeling an aeronomic model and estimating the rate of the EGP atmospheric loss.  相似文献

We present a detailed calculation of model atmospheres for DA white dwarfs. Our atmosphere code solves the atmosphere structure in local thermodynamic equilibrium with a standard partial linearization technique, which takes into account the energy transfer by radiation and convection. This code incorporates recent improved and extended data base of collision-induced absorption by molecular hydrogen. We analyse the thermodynamic structure and emergent flux of atmospheres in the range 2500 T eff60 000 K and 6.5log  g 9.0. Bolometric correction and colour indices are provided for a subsample of the model grid. Comparison of the colours is made with published observational material and results of other recent model calculations.
Motivated by the increasing interest in helium-core white dwarfs, we analyse the photometric characteristics of these stars during their cooling, using evolutionary models recently available. Effective temperatures, surface gravities, masses and ages have been determined for some helium-core white dwarf candidates, and their possible binary nature is briefly discussed.  相似文献

The computation of synthetic spectra for planetary atmospheres in which multiple scattering is important usually requires lengthy numerical work. We obtain solutions to the appropriate equation of radiative transfer by use of a variational principle whose extremum is essentially the reflectivity. When considering light diffusely reflected from the atmospheres of the outer planets, the technique reduces the computational work enormously and is applicable to models in which the albedo varies strongly with optical depth as well.  相似文献

Radial velocity surveys for extrasolar planets generally require substantial amounts of large telescope time in order to monitor a sufficient number of stars. Two of the aspects which can limit such surveys are the single-object capabilities of the spectrograph, and an inefficient observing strategy for a given observing window. In addition, the detection rate of extrasolar planets using the radial velocity method has thus far been relatively linear with time. With the development of various multi-object Doppler survey instruments, there is growing potential to dramatically increase the detection rate using the Doppler method. Several of these instruments have already begun usage in large-scale surveys for extrasolar planets, such as Fibre Large Array Multi Element Spectrograph (FLAMES) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and Keck Exoplanet Tracker (ET) on the Sloan 2.5-m wide-field telescope.
In order to plan an effective observing strategy for such a program, one must examine the expected results based on a given observing window and target selection. We present simulations of the expected results from a generic multi-object survey based on calculated noise models and sensitivity for the instrument and the known distribution of exoplanetary system parameters. We have developed code for automatically sifting and fitting the planet candidates produced by the survey to allow for fast follow-up observations to be conducted. The techniques presented here may be applied to a wide range of multi-object planet surveys.  相似文献

We examine the effects of dynamical evolution in clusters on planetary systems or protoplanetary discs orbiting the components of binary stars. In particular, we look for evidence that the companions of host stars of planetary systems or discs could have their inclination angles raised from zero to between the threshold angles (39.23° and 140.77°) that can induce the Kozai mechanism. We find that up to 20 per cent of binary systems have their inclination angles increased to within the threshold range. Given that half of all extrasolar planets could be in binary systems, we suggest that up to 10 per cent of extrasolar planets could be affected by this mechanism.  相似文献

The solution of the equation of radiative transfer in a medium exhibiting Rayleigh scattering, as developed by S. Chandrasekhar, has been used for an extensive series of computations(3) of the characteristics of the scattered and diffusely reflected radiation emerging from the top of an atmospheric model which corresponds in many respects to the sunlit portion of the earth's atmosphere. The first part of this two-part discussion dealt with the intensity, degree of polarization, plane of polarization and the neutral points of the emergent light as functions of sun elevation, direction in the downward hemisphere, optical thickness of the model atmosphere and reflectivity of the underlying surface. This second part is concerned with the upward flux obtained by an integration of the intensity over the entire hemisphere, for the incident radiation (a) being independent of wavelength or (b) having the spectral distribution of the extra-terrestrial solar radiation. Integration with respect to wavelength in the latter case, together with an approximation for the sphericity of the atmosphere, yields a value of 7.6 per cent for the earth's planetary albedo due to scattering by the clear atmosphere. An approximation for ozone absorption decreases the computed albedo to 6.9 per cent.  相似文献

We propose that astronomers will be eventually be able to discriminate between extrasolar Earth-like planets with surface oceans and those without using the shape of phase light curves in the visible and near-IR spectrum. We model the visible light curves of planets having Earth-like surfaces, seasons, and optically-thin atmospheres with idealized diffuse-scattering clouds. We show that planets partially covered by water will appear measurably brighter near crescent phase (relative to Lambertian planets) because of the efficient specular reflection (“glint”) of starlight incident on their surfaces at a highly oblique angle. Planets on orbits within 30° of edge-on orientation (50% of all planets) will show pronounced glint over a sizeable range of orbital longitudes, from quadrature to crescent, all outside the glare of their parent stars. Also, water-covered planets will appear darker than a Lambertian disk near full illumination. Finally, we show that planets with a mixed land/water surface will polarize the reflected signal by as much as 30-70%. These results suggest several new ways of directly identifying water on distant planets.  相似文献

The transmission of light through a planetary atmosphere can be studied as a function of altitude and wavelength using stellar or solar occultations, giving often unique constraints on the atmospheric composition. For exoplanets, a transit yields a limb-integrated, wavelength-dependent transmission spectrum of an atmosphere. When scattering haze and/or cloud particles are present in the planetary atmosphere, the amount of transmitted flux not only depends on the total optical thickness of the slant light path that is probed, but also on the amount of forward-scattering by the scattering particles. Here, we present results of calculations with a three-dimensional Monte Carlo code that simulates the transmitted flux during occultations or transits. For isotropically scattering particles, like gas molecules, the transmitted flux appears to be well-described by the total atmospheric optical thickness. Strongly forward-scattering particles, however, such as commonly found in atmospheres of Solar System planets, can increase the transmitted flux significantly. For exoplanets, such added flux can decrease the apparent radius of the planet by several scale heights, which is comparable to predicted and measured features in exoplanet transit spectra. We performed detailed calculations for Titan’s atmosphere between 2.0 and 2.8 μm and show that haze and gas abundances will be underestimated by about 8% if forward-scattering is ignored in the retrievals. At shorter wavelengths, errors in the gas and haze abundances and in the spectral slope of the haze particles can be several tens of percent, also for other Solar System planetary atmospheres. We also find that the contribution of forward-scattering can be fairly well described by modelling the atmosphere as a plane-parallel slab. This potentially reduces the need for a full three-dimensional Monte Carlo code for calculating transmission spectra of atmospheres that contain forward-scattering particles.  相似文献
