Field study, thermochronology and geochemistry of the east Lungmu Co (LMC) range highlight some of the geological events that shaped western Tibet. The LMC fault zone has long been interpreted as the boundary between the Tianshuihai terrane of Laurasian affinity and the Qiangtang block of Gondwanian affinity. In the LMC range, the Paleozoic series is intruded by the Mangtsa leucogranite whose zircon have a U/Pb age of 116.9 ± 1 Ma and by mafic rocks with U/Pb zircon ages ranging from 116.9 ± 1 to 95.1 ± 1.7 Ma. Geochemistry of the mafic rocks indicates that they have been emplaced in a supra-subduction zone setting, probably the north dipping Nujiang suture zone. 40Ar/39Ar micas ages of the granite indicate that cooling below ~ 350 °C occurred between 105 and 85 Ma. 40Ar/39Ar K-feldspar data suggest a fast cooling event at 60-55 Ma, which we relate to the reactivation of the LMC suture zone as a thrust at the onset of the India-Eurasia collision. The last, and still active, deformation event corresponds to left-lateral strike-slip faulting along the ENE-WSW LMC fault.  相似文献

The Daping Neoproterozoic plutonic rocks at the northeastern margin of Indochina block in southwest China provide an ideal opportunity for studying the tectonic setting and relationship between the Indochina and Yangtze Blocks. LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating on the zircon cores and rims of a hornblende-gabbro yield 206Pb/238U weighted means ages of 873 ± 9.1 Ma and 769 ± 7 Ma, respectively, and that for cores, mantles and rims of a granodiorite yield 206Pb/238U weighted means ages of 981-987 Ma, 829 ± 10 Ma and 761 ± 11 Ma, respectively. The zircon cores and mantles are interpreted as inherited from their source region. The zircon rims are magmatic, their ages represent the emplacement timing. The zircon cores and rims from the hornblende-gabbro have εHf(t) values ranging from − 5.0 to − 5.8 and + 0.6 to + 6.4. Corresponding single-stage model ages range from 1626 to 1662 Ma and 1094 to 1311 Ma, respectively. For the granodiorite, the inherited mantles (including cores) show two groups: (1) εHf(t) values of + 3.3 to + 12.3 with single-stage Hf model ages of 897 to 1235 Ma; and (2) εHf(t) values of − 1.9 to − 7.8 with single stage model ages of 1470-1667 Ma. The zircon rims are characterized by positive εHf(t) values (+ 5.4 to + 8.2) with single-stage model ages ranging from 977 to 1108 Ma. Whole-rock geochemical data for the hornblende-gabbro, such as enrichment of LILE and LREE, negative anomaly of Nb and Ta, and high Mg# (52.1-65.4), suggest magma generation in a subduction-related setting. An island-arc affinity is strongly supported by the features of high-alumina basalt and abundant hornblende in a large hornblende-gabbro sill. The granodiorites are characterized by high Sr contents and Sr/Y ratios, strong enrichment of LILE and LREE, and negative anomaly of Nb, Ta, P and Ti, comparable with the features of subduction-related plutonic rocks. These data show that the hornblende-gabbro was generated by the partial melting of a metasomatized mantle wedge peridotite with contribution from aqueous fluids derived from a subducted slab. The granodiorite magma is a product of the mixing of mafic magma produced by partial melting of a slab-fluid-enriched metasomatized mantle wedge peridotite and felsic magma formed by the partial melting of crustal materials. The emplacement ages and geochemical features of subduction-related Daping plutonic rocks are the same as those reported from the western margin of the Yangtze block, suggesting the presence of an oceanic crust in between, with subduction to either side generating island-arc magmatism in the Neoproterozoic.  相似文献

U/Pb systematics of the Acapulco meteorite have been determined on phosphate and feldspar separates and on grain size fractions of bulk material. The latter show an enrichment of U and Th with respect to CI chondrites and a low (∼1) Th/U ratio. This is consistent with the model that the majority of U and Th was added early by a low temperature melt to the Acapulco precursor. The feldspar exhibits a Pb isotope composition that is close to the primordial Pb composition. Mineral separates and bulk fractions define a 207Pb/206Pb isochron. The age corresponds to 4555.9 ± 0.6 Ma. This age anchors the thermal evolution of the Acapulco parent body into an absolute time scale. Evaluation of the Hf/W and U/Pb records with the cooling rates deduced from mineralogical investigations confirms the idea that the Acapulco parent body was fragmented during its cooling. The U/Pb system precisely dates this break-up at 4556 ± 1 Ma.  相似文献

The dating of volcanic tephras forms a critical cornerstone of chronostratigraphy and is paramount for the resolution of the geological timescale. (U‐Th[‐Sm])/He dating is an emerging tool in Quaternary tephrochronology and ideally suited to date tephras <1 Ma. We present zircon, magnetite and apatite (U‐Th[‐Sm])/He combined with zircon U‐Pb data for a Pleistocene tephra in syn‐rift strata of the Woodlark Rift in Papua New Guinea. The results reveal a young He age mode (~0.5 to 0.8 Ma), consistent with an autocrystic zircon U‐Pb crystallisation age of 0.8 ± 0.1 Ma, as well as a broad range of older (U‐Th[‐Sm])/He (~1.6 to 10.2 Ma) and U‐Pb (~4.4 to 107 Ma) ages. These data demonstrate the potential of integrated U‐Pb and (U‐Th[‐Sm])/He multi‐method chronometry for dating the youngest coherent age mode, detecting contaminant grains and evaluating the isotopic systematics of these techniques.  相似文献

U–Pb zircon geochronology of two Permo-Triassic granites (samples OT-52 and OT-272 with ages of 229 ± 8 Ma and 256 ± 2 Ma, respectively) in the Unazuki area, Hida Metamorphic Belt, southwest Japan, revealed the presence of Eoarchean to Paleoproterozoic inheritance. Inheritance is consistent with both samples showing low zircon saturation temperatures for their bulk compositions. In OT-52, dark in CL, low Th/U zircon domains have a mean 207Pb/206Pb age of 1940 ± 17 Ma, which is consistent with an age of 1937 ± 6 Ma for anatexis in the Precambrian Busan gneiss complex in Korea. Eoarchaean inherited zircons with 207Pb/206Pb ages from ca. 3750 to 3550 Ma are common in OT-272 but are few in OT-52, suggesting a source from rocks with affinities to those in the Anshan area in the northeast China part of the North China Craton. On the other hand, a Hida Metamorphic Belt metasedimentary gneiss into which the granites were intruded contains ca. 1840, 1130, 580, 360, 285 and 250 Ma zircons (Sano et al., 2000). These ages suggest that the Unazuki Mesozoic granites did not originate from proximal Hida Metamorphic Complex rocks, but instead from unrelated rocks obscured at depth. The predominance of Eoarchean to Paleoproterozoic age components, and the marked lack of 900–700 Ma components suggest that the source was the (extended?) fringe of the North China Craton, rather than from Yangtze Craton crust. The Mesozoic evolution of Japan and its linkages to northeast Asia are discussed in the context of these results.  相似文献

Measurements of 238U-230Th-226Ra disequilibria, Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopes and major-trace elements have been conducted for lavas erupted in the last quarter-millennium at Hekla volcano, Iceland. The volcanic rocks range from basalt to dacite. Most of the lavas (excluding dacitic samples) display limited compositional variations in radiogenic Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopes (87Sr/86Sr = 0.70319-0.70322; 143Nd/144Nd = 0.51302-0.51305; 206Pb/204Pb = 19.04-19.06; 207Pb/204Pb = 15.53-15.54; 208Pb/204Pb = 38.61-38.65; 176Hf/177Hf = 0.28311-0.28312). All the samples possess (230Th/238U) disequilibrium with 230Th excesses, and they show systematic variations in (230Th/232Th) and (238U/232Th) ratios. The highest 226Ra excesses occur in the basalt and most differentiated andesite lavas, while some basaltic-andesite lavas have (226Ra/230Th) ratio that are close to equilibrium. The 238U-230Th-226Ra disequilibria variations cannot be produced by simple closed-system fractional crystallization with radioactive decay of 230Th and 226Ra in a magma chamber. A closed-system fractional crystallization model and assimilation and fractional crystallization (AFC) model indicate that the least differentiated basaltic andesites were derived from basalt by fractional crystallization with a differentiation age of ∼24 ± 11 kyr, whereas the andesites were formed by assimilation of crustal material and fractionation of the basaltic-andesites within 2 kyr. Apatite is inferred to play a key role in fractionating the parent-daughter nuclides in 230Th-238U and 226Ra-230Th to make the observed variations. Our proposed model is that several batches of basaltic-andesite magmas that formed by fractional crystallization of a basaltic melt from a deeper reservoir, were periodically injected into the shallow crust to form individual magma pockets, and subsequently modifying the original magma compositions via simultaneous assimilation and fractional crystallization. The assimilant is the dacitic melt, which formed by partial melting of the crust.  相似文献

A combined study of internal structure, U-Pb age, and Hf and O isotopes was carried out for metamorphic zircons from ultrahigh-pressure eclogite boudins enclosed in marbles from the Dabie orogen in China. CL imaging identifies two types of zircon that are metamorphically new growth and recrystallized domain, respectively. The metamorphic zircons have low Th and U contents with low Th/U ratios, yielding two groups of 206Pb/238U age at 245 ± 3 to 240 ± 2 Ma and 226 ± 4 to 223 ± 2 Ma, respectively. Anomalously high δ18O values were obtained for refractory minerals, with 9.9 to 21.4‰ for garnet and 16.9‰ for zircon. This indicates that eclogite protolith is sedimentary rocks capable of liberating aqueous fluid for zircon growth during continental subduction-zone metamorphism. Most of the zircons are characterized by very low 176Lu/177Hf ratios of 0.000001-0.000028, indicating their growth in association with garnet recrystallization. A few of them falling within the older age group have comparatively high 176Lu/177Hf ratios of 0.000192-0.000383, suggesting their growth prior to the formation of garnet in the late stage of subduction. The variations in the Lu/Hf ratios for zircons can thus be used to correlate with garnet growth during eclogite-facies metamorphism. In either case, the zircons have variable εHf (t) values for individual samples, suggesting that their protolith is heterogeneous in Hf isotope composition with localized fluid availability in the bulk processes of orogenic cycle. Nevertheless, a positive correlation exists between 206Pb/238U ages and Lu-Hf isotope ratios for the metamorphically recrystallized zircons, suggesting that eclogite-facies metamorphism in the presence of fluid has the identical effect on zircon Lu-Hf and U-Th-Pb isotopic systems. We conclude that the zircons of the older group grew in the presence of fluid during the subduction prior to the onset of peak ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism, whereas the younger zircons grew in the presence of fluid released during the initial exhumation toward high-pressure eclogite-facies regime.  相似文献

In situ U-Pb SHRIMP analysis of hydrothermal monazite virtually free of Th and poor in U (<0.2 ppm Th, 40-103 ppm U) from the world-class Llallagua tin porphyry deposit in Bolivia defines a mineralization age of 23.4 ± 2.2 Ma (MSWD 0.48) confirming earlier K-Ar sericite alteration age data. These ages are, however, in contrast with a weighted mean single crystal 207Pb/206Pb evaporation age of 39.3 ± 6.0 Ma, and a related Pb-Pb inverse isochron age of 42.4 ± 4.0 Ma (MSWD 0.66) on zircon from a post-porphyry dike, as well as with an earlier single crystal Sm-Nd apatite isochron age.Our data points to a significant time gap between emplacement of the ore-hosting porphyry intrusion (magmatism) and its hydrothermal overprint (tin mineralization), suggesting long-lived magmatic-hydrothermal activity in this part of the Andean back-arc crust. The decoupling of porphyry magmatism and hydrothermal activity may explain the unusual occurrence of relatively little fractionated felsic rocks together with extensive tin mineralization. Our study demonstrates the usefulness of the application of the U-Pb SHRIMP method to direct age determination of ore mineralization using Th-poor hydrothermal monazite even when dealing with geological young events. The common assumption of synchronous magmatism and hydrothermal ore formation in porphyry systems may not always be warranted.  相似文献

Combined U-Pb zircon and 40Ar/39Ar sanidine data from volcanic rocks within or adjacent to the Geysers geothermal reservoir constrain the timing of episodic eruption events and the pre-eruptive magma history. Zircon U-Pb concordia intercept model ages (corrected for initial 230Th disequilibrium) decrease as predicted from stratigraphic and regional geological relationships (1σ analytical error): 2.47 ± 0.04 Ma (rhyolite of Pine Mountain), 1.38 ± 0.01 Ma (rhyolite of Alder Creek), 1.33 ± 0.04 Ma (rhyodacite of Cobb Mountain), 1.27 ± 0.03 Ma (dacite of Cobb Valley), and 0.94 ± 0.01 Ma (dacite of Tyler Valley). A significant (∼0.2-0.3 Ma) difference between these ages and sanidine 40Ar/39Ar ages measured for the same samples demonstrates that zircon crystallized well before eruption. Zircons U-Pb ages from the underlying main-phase Geysers Plutonic Complex (GPC) are indistinguishable from those of the Cobb Mountain volcanics. While this is in line with compositional evidence that the GPC fed the Cobb Mountain eruptions, the volcanic units conspicuously lack older (∼1.8 Ma) zircons from the shallowest part of the GPC. Discontinuous zircon age populations and compositional relationships in the volcanic and plutonic samples are incompatible with zircon residing in a single long-lived upper crustal magma chamber. Instead we favor a model in which zircons were recycled by remelting of just-solidified rocks during episodic injection of more mafic magmas. This is consistent with thermochronologic evidence that the GPC cooled below 350° C at the time the Cobb Mountain volcanics were erupted.  相似文献

Large volumes of silicic magma were produced on a very short timescale in the nested caldera complex of the SW Nevada volcanic field (SWNVF). Voluminous ash flows erupted in two paired events: Topopah Spring (TS, >1,200 km3, 12.8 Ma)–Tiva Canyon (TC, 1,000 km3, 12.7 Ma) and Rainier Mesa (RM, 1,200 km3, 11.6 Ma)–Ammonia Tanks (AT, 900 km3, 11.45 Ma; all cited ages are previously published 40Ar/39Ar sanidine ages). Within each pair, eruptions are separated by only 0.1–0.15 My and produced tuffs with contrasting isotopic values. These events represent nearly complete evacuation of sheet-like magma chambers formed in the extensional Basin and Range environment. We present ion microprobe ages from zircons in the zoned ash-flow sheets of TS, TC, RM, and AT in conjunction with δ18O values of zircons and other phenocrysts, which differ dramatically among subsequently erupted units. Bulk zircons in the low-δ18O AT cycle were earlier determined to exhibit ∼1.5‰ core-to-rim oxygen isotope zoning; and high-spatial resolution zircon analyses by ion microprobe reveal the presence of older grains that are zoned by 0.5–2.5‰. The following U–Pb isochron ages were calculated after correcting for the initial U–Pb disequilibria: AT (zircon rims: 11.7 ± 0.2 Ma; cores: 12.0 ± 0.1 Ma); pre-AT rhyolite lava: (12.0 ± 0.3 Ma); RM: 12.4 ± 0.3); TC: (13.2 ± 0.15 Ma); TS: (13.5 ± 0.2). Average zircon crystallization ages calculated from weighted regression or cumulative averaging are older than the Ar–Ar stratigraphy, but preserve the comparably short time gaps within each of two major eruption cycles (TS/TC, RM/AT). Notably, every sample yields average zircon ages that are 0.70–0.35 Ma older than the respective Ar–Ar eruption ages. The Th/U ratio of SWNVF zircons are 0.4–4.7, higher than typically found in igneous zircons, which correlates with elevated Th/U of the whole rocks (5–16). High Th/U could be explained if uranium was preferentially removed by hydrothermal solutions or is retained in the protolith during partial melting. For low-δ18O AT-cycle magmas, rim ages from unpolished zircons overlap within analytical uncertainties with the 40Ar/39Ar eruption age compared to core ages that are on average ∼0.2–0.3 My older than even the age of the preceding caldera forming eruption of RM tuff. This age difference, the core-to-rim oxygen isotope zoning in AT zircons, and disequilibrium quartz–zircon and melt-zircon isotopic fractionations suggest that AT magma recycled older zircons derived from the RM and older eruptive cycles. These results suggest that the low-δ18O AT magmas were generated by melting a hydrothermally-altered protolith from the same nested complex that erupted high-δ18O magmas of the RM cycle only 0.15 My prior to the eruption of the AT, the largest volume low-δ18O magma presently known.Electronic supplementary material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at and is accessible for authorized users.  相似文献

A variety of eclogites from an east-west transect across the North-East Greenland eclogite province have been studied to establish the timing of high pressure (HP) and ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphism in this northern segment of the Laurentian margin. Garnet + omphacite ± amphibole + whole rock Sm-Nd isochrons from a quartz eclogite, a garnet + omphacite + rutile eclogite and a partially melted zoisite eclogite in the western HP belt are 401±2, 402±9 and 414±18 Ma, respectively. Corresponding sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) 206Pb/238U ages of metamorphic zircon in the same samples are 401±7, 414±13, and 393 ±10 Ma. Metamorphic zircon domains were identified using morphology, cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging, U, Th, Th/U and trace element contents. Zircon from the quartz eclogite and the garnet + omphacite + rutile eclogite are typical of eclogite facies zircon with rounded to subhedral shapes, patchy to homogenous CL domains, low U, and very low Th and Th/U. The partially melted eclogite contains euhedral zircons with dark, sector-zoned, higher U, Th and Th/U inherited cores. Three cores give a Paleoproterozoic 207Pb/206Pb age of 1,962±27 Ma, interpreted as the age of the leucogabbroic protolith. CL images of the bright overgrowths show faint oscillatory zoning next to homogenous areas that indicate zircon growth in the presence of a HP melt and later recrystallization. Additional evidence that zircon grew during eclogite facies conditions is the lack of a Eu anomaly in the trace element data for all the samples. These results, combined with additional less precise Sm-Nd ages and our earlier work, point to a Devonian age of HP metamorphism in the western and central portions of the eclogite province. An UHP kyanite eclogite from the eastern part of the transect contains equant metamorphic zircon with homogeneous to patchy zoning in CL and HP inclusions of garnet, omphacite and kyanite. These zircons have slightly higher U, Th and Th/U values than the HP ones, no Eu anomaly, and are thus comparable to UHP zircons in the literature. The 206Pb/238U age of these zircons is 360±5 Ma, much younger than the HP eclogites. The same sample gives a Sm-Nd age of 342±6 Ma. Unlike the HP eclogites, the Sm-Nd age of the UHP rock is ca. 20 Ma younger than the U-Pb zircon age and most likely records slow cooling through the closure temperature, since peak temperatures were in excess of 900°C. Widespread HP metamorphism of both the Laurentian and Baltica continental margins marks the culmination of this continent–continent collision in the Devonian. Carboniferous UHP conditions, though localized in the east, suggest a prolonged collisional history rather than a short-lived Scandian orogeny. The traditional Silurian Scandian orogeny should thus be extended through the Devonian.  相似文献

Hafnium isotope analyses of a large number of metamorphic zircon grains of two garnet-kyanite-staurolite schist samples from the Shackleton Range yielded 176Hf/177Hf of 0.28160 ± 0.00003 and 0.28142 ± 0.00003, respectively. The variations of these analyses are less than ±1.2 epsilon units and indicate that all metamorphic zircon grains in the two rocks formed in environments with nearly homogenous Hf isotopic composition. The metamorphic origin of the zircon grains is constrained by textures as well as by their low Th/U (<0.2), 176Lu/177Hf (<0.0003), and 176Yb/177Hf ratios (<0.009), indicating that they grew in the presence of garnet. Furthermore, the grains yield Pb-Pb ages of c. 1.7 Ga, which is the time of amphibolite-facies metamorphism. In combination with petrological results, it is suggested that the observed 176Hf/177Hf homogeneity was caused by a fluid- and deformation-assisted dissolution of detrital zircon grains, followed by new zircon re-precipitation that was accompanied by Hf transport on at least a hand-specimen scale. This interpretation is supported by results obtained from an additional paragneiss sample that contains zoned zircon grains with xenocrystic cores formed at 2.6-1.8 Ga and metamorphic rims with a U-Pb age of 1.7 Ga. The 176Hf/177Hf variation of the zircon rims is mostly at ±0.0003, which is much less than that of the magmatic cores (±0.0019). The metamorphic fluid for the dissolution-homogenization-re-precipitation process most likely resulted from prograde reactions among the minerals chlorite-muscovite-biotite-garnet-staurolite-apatite, in agreement with thin section observations and P-T pseudosection calculations.  相似文献

In this study (U‐Th)/He dating of the Penglai zircons, which occur as abundant megacrysts in Neogene alkaline basalts in northern Hainan Province, south‐eastern China, was undertaken. A weighted mean age of 4.06 ± 0.35 Ma (2s) with a mean square weighted deviation (MSWD) of 1.79 was obtained from eighteen fragments of four zircon megacrysts using single‐crystal laser fusion He determinations and the U‐Th isotope dilution (ID) method. The (U‐Th)/He ages are consistent, homogeneous and systematically slightly younger than the preferred 206Pb/238U age of 4.4 ± 0.1 Ma (95% confidence interval) determined by ID‐TIMS and subsequently published U‐Pb results. The U‐Pb isotopic system in zircon has a high closure temperature of ~ 900 °C, and the preferred U‐Pb age may record both the time since eruption and the zircon residence time in the magma chamber. In contrast, the closure temperature of the zircon (U‐Th)/He system is ~ 190 °C and the zircon megacrysts were brought quickly to the surface by the host basaltic magma. Thus, the (U‐Th)/He age represents the timing of the eruption. Based on the unlimited quantity, large grain size, mostly weak broad zoning, rapid cooling and homogenous (U‐Th)/He ages, we consider the Penglai zircons suitable for use as a reference material in (U‐Th)/He isotope geochronology.  相似文献

The Davis Lake pluton (DLP, ~800 km2) of southwestern Nova Scotia, Canada, part of the large peraluminous South Mountain batholith of ca. 380 Ma (U/Pb zircon, Ar/Ar mica), consists of granite and subordinate topaz–muscovite leucogranite that hosts greisen tin-base metal mineralization. A new Pb–Pb isochron age for leucogranite from the most evolved part of the DLP indicates a crystallization age of 378±3.6 Ma, coincident with other radiometric ages of the DLP (Rb–Sr, Re–Os, Pb–Pb). The intrusion displays a compositional zonation defined by lead and strontium isotopic ratios, as well as some major elements (e.g., Si, F), incompatible trace elements (e.g., Li, Rb, Ta, U, Sn), and elemental ratios (e.g., K/Rb and Nb/Ta). The greisens and the leucogranites that host them are characterized by extreme radiogenic compositions for Pb and Sr, and their chemical-isotopic trends are extensions of the trends displayed by the less evolved granites. The covariations of the isotopic ratios with several major and trace elements and elemental ratios as well as the Pb–Pb and Rb–Sr isochrones indicate that all phases of the intrusion originated from a homogeneous parental magma. The granitoid magma underwent extensive fractional crystallization of feldspars, minor biotite and accessory minerals (monazite, apatite and zircon) in a compositionally zoned magma chamber that was subsequently accompanied by fluid fractionation, during which time the internally derived fluorine-rich fluids modified the Rb/Sr, U/Pb and Th/Pb ratios, leading to distinct variations of 87Sr/86Sr, 206Pb/204Pb, 238U/204Pb and 232Th/204Pb isotopic ratios. These data therefore document the evolution of a granitic magma through magmatic (i.e., crystal fractionation), orthomagmatic (i.e., crystal-fluid fractionation) and hydrothermal (i.e., fluid fractionation) stages that culminated in the formation of a tin-base metal deposit. The Pb isotope data also constrain the source region for the DLP as being Avalonian basement that, by inference, must underlie much of the Meguma Terrane.Editorial responsibility: T.L. To elucidate the age and origin of seamounts in the eastern North Atlantic, 54 titanite and 10 zircon fractions were dated by the U-Pb chronometer, and initial Pb, Sr, and Hf isotope ratios were measured in feldspars and zircon, respectively. Rocks analyzed are essentially trachy-andesites and trachytes dredged during the “Tore Madeira” cruise of the Atalante in 2001. The ages reveal different pulses of alkaline magmatism occurring at 104.4 ± 1.4 (2σ) Ma and 102.8 ± 0.7 Ma on the Sponge Bob seamount, at 96.3 ± 1.0 Ma on Ashton seamount, at 92.3 ± 3.8 Ma on the Gago Coutinho seamount, at 89.3 ± 2.3 Ma and 86.5 ± 3.4 Ma on the Jo Sister volcanic complex, and at 88.3 ± 3.3 Ma, 88.2 ± 3.9, and 80.5 ± 0.9 Ma on the Tore locality. No space-time correlation is observed for alkaline volcanism in the northern section of the Tore-Madeira Rise, which occurred 20-30 m.y. after opening of the eastern North Atlantic. Initial isotope signatures are: 19.139-19.620 for 206Pb/204Pb, 15.544-15.828 for 207Pb/204Pb, 38.750-39.936 for 208Pb/204Pb, 0.70231-0.70340 for 87Sr/86Sr, and +6.9 to +12.9 for initial epsilon Hf. These signatures are different from Atlantic MORB, the Madeira Archipelago and the Azores, but they lie in the field of worldwide OIB. The Cretaceous seamounts therefore seem to be generated by melts from a OIB-type source that interact with continental lithospheric mantle lying formerly beneath Iberia and presently within the ocean-continent transition zone. Inheritance in zircon and high 207Pb of initial Pb substantiate the presence of very minor amounts of continental material in the lithospheric mantle. A long-lived thermal anomaly is the most plausible explanation for alkaline magmatism since 104 Ma and it could well be that the same anomaly is still the driving force for tertiary and quaternary alkaline magmatism in the eastern North Atlantic region. This hypothesis is agreement with the plate-tectonic position of the region since Cretaceous time, including an about 30° anti-clockwise rotation of Iberia.  相似文献

Extreme U and Pb isotope variations produced by disequilibrium in decay chains of 238U and 232Th are found in calcite, opal/chalcedony, and Mn-oxides occurring as secondary mineral coatings in the unsaturated zone at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. These very slowly growing minerals (mm my−1) contain excess 206Pb and 208Pb formed from excesses of intermediate daughter isotopes and cannot be used as reliable 206Pb/238U geochronometers. The presence of excess intermediate daughter isotopes does not appreciably affect 207Pb/235U ages of U-enriched opal/chalcedony, which are interpreted as mineral formation ages.Opal and calcite from outer (younger) portions of coatings have 230Th/U ages from 94.6 ± 3.7 to 361.3 ± 9.8 ka and initial 234U/238U activity ratios (AR) from 4.351 ± 0.070 to 7.02 ± 0.12, which indicate 234U enrichment from percolating water. Present-day 234U/238U AR is ∼1 in opal/chalcedony from older portions of the coatings. The 207Pb/235U ages of opal/chalcedony samples range from 0.1329 ± 0.0080 to 9.10 ± 0.21 Ma, increase with microstratigraphic depth, and define slow long-term average growth rates of about 1.2-2.0 mm my−1, in good agreement with previous results. Measured 234U/238U AR in Mn-oxides, which pre-date the oldest calcite and opal/chalcedony, range from 0.939 ± 0.006 to 2.091 ± 0.006 and are >1 in most samples. The range of 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.71156-0.71280) in Mn-oxides overlaps that in the late calcite. These data indicate that Mn-oxides exchange U and Sr with percolating water and cannot be used as a reliable dating tool.In the U-poor calcite samples, measured 206Pb/207Pb ratios have a wide range, do not correlate with Ba concentration as would be expected if excess Ra was present, and reach a value of about 1400, the highest ever reported for natural Pb. Calcite intergrown with opal contains excesses of both 206Pb and 207Pb derived from Rn diffusion and from direct α-recoil from U-rich opal. Calcite from coatings devoid of opal/chalcedony contains 206Pb and 208Pb excesses, but no appreciable 207Pb excesses. Observed Pb isotope anomalies in calcite are explained by Rn-produced excess Pb. The Rn emanation may strongly affect 206Pb-238U ages of slow-growing U-poor calcite, but should be negligible for dating fast-growing U-enriched speleothem calcite.  相似文献

On the basis of internal structures, laser ablation U–Pb ages and trace element compositions, the origin of zircon in jadeitite in the Nishisonogi metamorphic rocks was examined. The zircon comprises euhedral zoned cores overgrown by euhedral rims. The cores contain inclusions of muscovite, quartz, albite and possibly K‐feldspar, yield 238U–206Pb ages of 126 ± 6 Ma (±2 SD, n = 45, MSWD = 1.0), and have Th/U ratios of 0.48–1.64. The rims contain inclusions of jadeite, yield 238U–206Pb ages of 84 ± 6 Ma (±2 SD, n = 14, MSWD = 1.1), and have Th/U ratios of <0.06. The cores are richer in Y, Th, Ti and rare earth elements (REEs), but the rims are richer in Hf and U. Chondrite‐normalized REE patterns of the cores indicate higher SmN/LaN ratios, lower YbN/GdN ratios and larger positive Ce anomalies compared with those of the rims. Thus, the cores and rims have different 238U–206Pb ages and trace element compositions, suggesting two stages of zircon growth. Although the 238U–206Pb ages of the rims are consistent with the reported 40Ar/39Ar spot‐fusion ages of matrix muscovite in the jadeitite, the 238U–206Pb ages of the cores are older. The mineral inclusions and high Th/U ratios in the cores are best explained by crystallization from felsic magma. Therefore, the cores are considered relicts from igneous precursor rocks. The rims surrounding the inherited cores possibly precipitated from aqueous fluids during jadeitite formation. The elevated U concentrations in the rims suggest that infiltration of external fluids was responsible for the precipitation. This study provides an example of jadeitite formation by metasomatic replacement of a protolith.  相似文献

The diamondiferous Ellendale 9 (E9) pipe is a funnel-shaped maar-diatreme volcano consisting of inward-dipping tuff sequences intruded by lamproite plugs and dykes. The host rocks for the E9 pipe are Permian sandstones. The multiple lithological contacts exposed within the mined maar volcano provide a natural laboratory in which to study the effect of volcanic processes on U–Th–Pb–He systematics. Zircon from the regional sandstone and E9 lamproite display a bimodal distribution of ages on (U–Th)/He–U/Pb plots. The zircon U/Pb ages for the E9 pipe (n?=?52) range from 440 to 2,725 Ma, while the cluster of (U–Th)/He ages for the lamproite dyke zircon indicate that dyke emplacement occurred at 20.6?±?2.8 Ma, concordant with a maximum emplacement age of about ≤22 Ma from phlogopite 40Ar/39Ar. These ages indicate a xenocrystic origin for the zircon entrained in the E9 dyke. The U/Pb ages of detrital zircon from the regional sandstone host (373–3,248 Ma; n?=?41) are indistinguishable from those of the lamproite zircon xenocrysts, whereas the detrital zircon in the host sandstone yield (U–Th)/He ages from 260 to 1,500 Ma. A thermochronology traverse across the E9 lamproite dyke reveals that the zircon (U–Th)/He ages in the host sandstone have not been significantly thermally reset during dyke emplacement, even at the contact. The capability of the zircon (U–Th)/He method to distinguish deep, mantle source lithologies from upper crustal source lithologies could be used in geochemical exploration for diamonds. Pre-screening of detrital samples using etching and helium assay methods will improve the efficiency and decrease the cost of greenfields exploration.  相似文献

In this study, we link mineral inclusion data, trace element analyses, U-Pb age and Hf isotope composition obtained from distinct zircon domains of complex zircon to unravel the origin and multi-stage metamorphic evolution of amphibolites from the Sulu ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) terrane, eastern China. Zircon grains separated from amphibolites from the CCSD-MH drill hole (G12) and Niushan outcrop (G13) were subdivided into two main types based on cathodoluminescence (CL) and Laser Raman spectroscopy: big dusty zircons with inherited cores and UHP metamorphic rims and small clear zircons. Weakly zoned, grey-white luminescent inherited cores preserve mineral inclusions of Cpx + Pl + Ap ± Qtz indicative of a mafic igneous protolith. Dark grey luminescent overgrowth rims contain the coesite eclogite-facies mineral inclusion assemblage Coe + Grt + Omp + Phe + Ap, and formed at T = 732-839 °C and P = 3.0-4.0 GPa. In contrast, white luminescent small clear zircons preserve mineral inclusions formed during retrograde HP quartz eclogite to LP amphibolite-facies metamorphism (T = 612-698 °C and P = 0.70-1.05 GPa). Inherited zircons from both samples yield SHRIMP 206Pb/238U ages of 695-520 Ma with an upper intercept age of 800 ± 31 Ma. The UHP rims yield consistent Triassic ages around 236-225 and 239-225 Ma for G12 and G13 with weighted means of 229 ± 3 and 231 ± 3 Ma, respectively. Small clear zircons from both samples give 206Pb/238U ages around 219-210 Ma with a weighted mean of 214 ± 3 Ma, interpreted as the age of retrograde quartz eclogite-facies metamorphism. Matrix amphibole from both samples indicate Ar-Ar ages of 209 ± 0.7 and 207 ± 0.7 Ma, respectively, probably dating late amphibolite-facies retrogression. The data suggest subduction of Neoproterozoic mafic igneous rocks to UHP conditions in Middle Triassic (∼230 Ma) times and subsequent exhumation to an early HP (∼214 Ma) and a late LP stage (∼208 Ma) over a period of ∼16 and 6 Myr, respectively. Thus, early exhumation from a mantle depth of 120-100 km to about 60 km occurred at an average rate of 0.3 cm/y, while subsequent exhumation to a middle crustal level took place at approximately 0.54 cm/y. These exhumation rates are considerably slower than those obtained for UHP rocks in the Dora Maira and Kokchetav massifs (2-3 cm/y).Based on similar P-T estimates and trace element and Hf isotope compositions, Sulu amphibolites can be identified as retrograde UHP eclogites. The εHf(800) of +8 implies a significant input from the depleted mantle to the Sulu-Dabie terrane during the middle Neoproterozoic. Overgrown rims are characterized by a distinct trace element composition with low Lu/Hf and Th/U and significantly higher 176Hf/177Hf ratios than inherited cores, consistent with formation during/after garnet (re-)crystallization and fractionation of the Lu-Hf system during UHP metamorphism. The combined dataset suggests homogenization of the 176Hf/177Hf ratio within the metamorphic mineral assemblage and during protolith formation. Observed variations are explained by mixing of material from both domains during laser ablation, e.g., due to partial recrystallization of inherited cores.  相似文献

This study presents a new high-precision 40Ar/39Ar age for the Devonian hot-spring system at Rhynie. Hydrothermal K-feldspar sampled from two veins that represent feeder conduits and a hydrothermally altered andesite wall rock, date the hydrothermal activity, the fossilised biota, and syn - K-feldspar gold mineralization at 403.9 ± 2.1 Ma (2σ). Oxygen isotope data for the parent fluid (−4‰ to 2‰) show that the K-feldspar was precipitated from a dominantly meteoric fluid, which mixed with magmatic fluids from a degassing magma chamber. The 40Ar/39Ar age (403.9 ± 2.1 Ma [2σ]) when recalculated (407.1 ± 2.2 Ma [2σ]) with respect to the astronomically tuned age for Fish Canyon sanidine (28.201 ± 0.023 Ma [1σ]), also provides a robust marker for the polygonalis-emsiensis Spore Assemblage Biozone within the Pragian-?earliest Emsian. Furthermore, the age identifies the Devonian pull-apart volcano-sedimentary basins of the British and Irish Caledonides (and their root zones), as specific targets for future gold exploration.  相似文献
