The concentration of Ni in C. edule ranges from 17·8 μg/g to 53·82 μg/g with the highest concentration in the gills and mantle and the lowest in the foot and adductor muscles. The concentration does not change with either size or season. There is no significant increase in mortality even in the highest Ni concentration (100 μg/litre), nor is body condition correlated with experimental Ni concentrations. The rate of uptake of Ni (y) is described by the equation:
y=?16·903+11·674x1+0·437x2
where x1 = Ni concentration (μg/litre) and x2 = time (h).The respiration rates did not significantly change up to the highest Ni concentration used (1000 μg/litre).It is postulated that the main pathway for Ni uptake is through the gills, possibly through mucus sheet or transmembrane absorption, with a secondary uptake route via the viscera.C. edule may therefore be a suitable indicator species for Ni.  相似文献

The intertidal serrated wrack, Fucus serratus L. (Fucales: Phaeophyceae), has become an abundant canopy-forming alga along a ca. 100 km stretch of shore in southwestern Iceland in the last century. Its distribution has not changed noticeably since a survey in 1975/1976. Many experimental studies have shown that canopy-forming algae can have profound effects on the community structure. Although such experiments involving F. serratus are few it was decided to test predictions from these experiments on a geographical scale by comparing community compositions within the area where F. serratus is a dominant algae (since at least 1975/1976) with an adjacent area of similar size where F. serratus is absent (with a single exception without consequences). The work is based on measurements on some 372 stations in the F. serratus area, termed region A, and 227 stations from the F. serratus-free area, termed region B. Percentage cover of algae and sessile invertebrates was estimated on 2 m2 on each station and animals collected from 800 cm2 from each station. The vertical distribution of F. serratus was most similar to that of Fucus distichus and the two species often grew intermingled on the lower part of the shore. F. serratus appeared to have reduced the cover of F. distichus in the lowermost part of the shore, while having little or no effect on other canopy-forming species. The low abundance of Semibalanus balanoides in the F. serratus area (region A) is in line with experiments showing detrimental effect on this barnacle by whiplash of F. serratus. In general algal grazers were more abundant in region A, consistent with the greater attractiveness of F. serratus than other canopy-forming species to grazers, although this may be partly explained by the abundance of understorey algae in region A.  相似文献

Echinogammarus marinus constitutes the most abundant amphipod species in Fucus spp. assemblages from many North Atlantic estuaries. However, there are some doubts about the real use of fucoids by the amphipod. Whilst some studies report the ingestion of Fucus vesiculosus by E. marinus, others suggest that the amphipod preference for fucoids is mostly related to sheltering rather than feeding, due to the high phlorotannin content of brown algae. The purpose of the present work was to disentangle this issue by checking the consumption rate and feeding preference of E. marinus on F. vesiculosus, its preferential habitat, and on Ulva intestinalis, a green algae abundant in the Mondego estuary (Western Coast of Portugal) and usually considered as highly palatable for herbivores. In a 2-stage laboratorial setup, fresh disks of the two types of algae were offered to E. marinus for three days. Consumption rates were estimated from differences between algal and animal initial and final fresh weights using a control correction factor, while preference was tested by differences in algal consumption rates when no choice was offered (stage 1) and when the two algae were offered simultaneously (stage 2).Results showed that E. marinus effectively consumed fresh F. vesiculosus in much higher amounts than U. intestinalis and significantly preferred to consume F. vesiculosus over U. intestinalis. Therefore, feeding habits must be one of the factors related to the close association of the amphipod with F. vesiculosus, although other factors may also be involved (e.g. sheltering).  相似文献

Concentrations of zinc, cadmium, copper, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel and molybdenum are examined in brown algae, Fucus serratus and F. vesiculosus, from Cardigan Bay, Irish Sea, Great Britain. In both species a seasonal variation in metal content was observed. Zinc, cadmium, copper, iron nickel and cobalt concentrations were highest in the spring and lowest in the autumn, probably reflecting levels of metabolic activity and climatic factors. All the studied elements, except nickel, reached highest concentrations in harbour specimens from Aberystwyth and Aberaeron where rivers draining mineralized areas enter the sea. Outside harbours, marked regional variations were observed in most of the studied elements. Zinc values were highest in the Aberystwyth area while copper and manganese were highest in the northeast part of the bay.Trace-element concentrations varied among different species from the same locality and also varied according to position on the shore.Marine algae may be used to monitor coastal-water trace-metal concentrations, provided a careful sampling procedure is adopted.  相似文献

Four experiments were carried out to determine the effect of different temperatures, light levels and biological activities on the residence times of petroleum hydrocarbons. No. 2 fuel oil was added as a seawater dispersion to give an initial concentration of 150 to 300 μg/litre in the water columns of large, outdoor marine microcosms. Hydrocarbons in water samples fractionated on passage through glass fibre filters (0·3 μm pore size) according to the solubilities, so that 80–90 % of the aromatics entered the filtrate while all of the saturates were trapped by the filter. The removal of oil compounds from the water columns was exponential, with rates which appeared to be determined chiefly by the temperature. The half life of total hydrocarbons varied from more than 10 days in March to ~30 h in July and September. Volatilisation was hypothesised to be an important removal mechanism for the 40–60% of the saturates which were not sedimented with suspended particulate matter. In warm water, the residence times of normal alkanes were increased up to 50 % by poisoning the water column, but no similar increase was noted for the bulk of the F1 hydrocarbons. Aromatic (F2) hydrocarbons appeared to be removed slowly volatilisation from cold water (t12 > 200 h) and rapidly by biodegradation from warm water (t12 < 40 h).  相似文献

A photosynthetic gradient along the fronds of the serrated wrack, Fucus serratus L. is described. Within the epifaunal communities associated with the fronds of F. serratus certain species are known to settle preferentially in the distal, less heavily encrusted, regions of the plant; thus a gradient in photosynthetic activity could provide an important mechanism by which the prospecting larvae of such species are able to discriminate between different regions along individual fronds. Photosynthesis is significantly depressed in F. serratus fronds which are heavily fouled by the fleshy encrusting bryozoans, Alcyonidium hirsutum (Fleming) and Flustrellidra hispida (Fabricius). Electra pilosa (L.), a calcareous opportunistic bryozoan, has a less marked effect on photosynthetic activity. The selective costs of dense epifaunal assemblages on their algal hosts are briefly discussed.  相似文献

A number of field and laboratory studies on the impact of marine macroalgae on dissolved inorganic iodine speciation are presented. Within tidally isolated rock pools, the brown macroalga Fucus serratus was found to both release stored iodide and to facilitate the reduction of iodate to iodide. In contrast, no discernible changes in iodine speciation were observed in rock pools containing green macroalgae of the genus Ulva. Incubation experiments confirmed that the macroalgae Laminaria digitata, F. serratus and Kallymenia antarctica release iodide, though the rate of release varied between species and between specimens of the same species. Application of oxidative stress by treatment with cell wall derived oligoguluronate elicitors increased the efflux of iodide by L. digitata approximately 20-fold. The release of iodide by macroalgae may impact upon the formation of volatile iodine species (molecular iodine and iodocarbons) that are of importance in the coastal atmosphere.  相似文献

The basic aim of this study was to record the changes in the communities on a moderately exposed rocky shore by a programme of repeated non-destructive sampling (‘monitoring’) and to determine the causes of these changes. Possible causative factors were investigated by the combined approach of analysing detailed sea-temperature and meteorological data for the period of the study and establishing manipulative field experiments.Fixed quadrats (2 m by 1 m) at three levels were visited at 6–8 weekly intervals for 30 months and the abundance and spatial pattern of major species assessed. In the ‘High’ quadrat the balance between Fucus spiralis and F. vesiculosus changed, and an outburst of ephemeral algae occurred following a decline in overall canopy cover. In the ‘Mid’ quadrat F. vesiculosus decreased considerably from its initial cover and virtually disappeared by the end of the study. In the ‘Low’ quadrat F. vesiculosus increased from being absent to comprising 20% of the canopy, whilst Semmibalanus (= Balanus) balanoides and ‘understorey’ algae decreased in cover. Actinia equina, Nucella lapillus and Patella vulgata showed marked changes in number at all levels where they occurred.Only certain of these changes could be attributed to the physical environment—most were biologically controlled. For example, manipulative experiments showed that the blooms of ephemeral algae and the decline of Patella in the high-shore quadrat, and the decline of Actinia in the mid-shore quadrat, were due to decreases in the fucoid canopy. These canopy changes were, in turn, the result of biological cycles which are characteristic of these communities. However, even with the support of manipulative experiments, it was not possible to account for (or predict) all of the observed natural changes. The extent of these fluctuations poses a serious obstacle to the recognition of any but very gross pollution-induced effects. The conclusion must be that the monitoring of rocky shores as a means of detecting and measuring pollution is likely to be an unproductive investment of time and resources.  相似文献

The decomposition rates of Phragmites australis and Fucus vesiculosus were experimentally determined in an estuarine system using the leaf-bag technique. The study was conducted in fifteen sites arranged in five areas, extending from freshwater, outside the tidal range, to the marine environment, near the mouth of the estuary. The leaf-bags (5 mm mesh), were set up with 3.0 g of dried substrate, submerged in the experimental sites at day 0 and collected at days 3, 7, 15, 30 and 60, to follow biomass loss. The biomass loss through the leaching phase (day 3) was about 16% for Phragmites australis and 33% for Fucus vesiculosus and was independent of salinity for both substrates. The difference in the remaining biomass between the two species increased with time and the decomposition rates differed along the salinity gradient. For F. vesiculosus, the decomposition rate was highest near the mouth of the estuary, corresponding to the preferential distribution area of the algae, and decreased towards freshwater. For Phragmites australis, the fastest decay was observed in the mid estuary, where Phragmites australis occurs naturally, confirming previous studies. The decomposition rates measured at different time intervals (0–15, 0–30 and 0–60 days) were always higher for the algae and decreased with time for both species. These results indicate that the use of decomposition rates as a measure of ecosystem integrity or quality status in transitional waters will not be straightforward and must take into account, among others, the test species, the study area positioning along the estuarine gradient, and the time interval for the calculation of the decomposition rate.  相似文献

Zooplankton was sampled through eight depth intervals above about 500 m along a transect of the eastern tropical Pacific (ETP), 23°N to 3°S, encompassing four environments. (1) The California Current—ETP transition off Baja California and the mouth of the Gulf of California is inhabited by California Current species at their southern limits, and by the galatheid ‘red crab’ Pleuroncodes planipes together with euphausiids (e.g. Euphausia eximia) of an abundance-based recurrent group of species, distinguished using the criterion of > x abundance (Numbers under unit area of sea surface) at common localities, adapted to productive zones marginal to the O2-deficient part of the ETP. Tropical species appear here where water with surface temperature > 26°C and [O2] of < 0.1 ml l?1 beneath a shoaling thermocline replaces the upwelling environment off Baja California. (1) The zone 22° to 10°N harbors euphausiids of two groups: the vertically migrating tropical species (e.g. Euphausia diomedeae) which tolerate intense O2-deficiency at their daytime depths and enter the oxygenated mixed layer at night, and non-migrating Stylocheiron species which have vertical ranges extending up into the mixed layer. Nevertheless, most of these ‘ETP-adapted’ species are denser farther south, in the north equatorial countercurrent, but three ETP endemics (e.g. E. distinguenda), all vertical migrators belonging in one subgeneric division of Euphausia, are densest in the O2-deficient regions. (3) The zone of the North Equatorial Countercurrent maintains high densities of three groups: the widely-ranging, ETP-adapted tropical species, the four common Stylocheiron species which, while recurring in abundance at the same localities, differ in depth and the mesopelagic tropical-subtropical species, not tolerant of O2-deficiency, which occur here in easterly tongues of range. (4) At the equator (93°W), easterly ranging species (e.g. E. paragibba) and westerly Nyctiphanes simplex appear to migrate between equatorial currents which differ in direction with depth, thereby maintaining their narrow ranges along the equator. The ‘marginal proliferators’ such as E. eximia, prominent off Baja California, are again abundant here, availing of the equatorial divergence for high productivity and of the oppositely-directed currents for geographical stability.A second recurrent grouping of species, based on presence of their larvae at common localities, yielded groups also distinguishable by whether the larvae lived within or beneath the mixed layer.Ontogenetic strengthening of vertical migration capability is demonstrated by many species, with older larvae, juveniles and adults showing ranges, respectively, increasing from a few meters to up to 400 m. The pattern is the same in O2-deficient regions as elsewhere.Regional distribution of euphausiid volume (wet displacement biomass) tended to agree with zooplankton volume, with maxima at the equator, 8°N, and at some localities off Baja California and the Gulf of California where red crab volume peaked. The depth at which euphausiid volume is equal in amount day and night, across which vertical migration takes place, is designated the equilibrium depth (EqD) for euphausiid volume. EqD for euphausiids generally agreed with EqD for zooplankton volume, indicating that euphausiids play a role in determining depth of EqD for zooplankton volume. Euphausiids comprised 13% (x) of zooplankton volume. 80% (x) of euphausiid volume migrated across EqD, the value showing no significant regional differences. 37% (x) of zooplankton volume engaged in such migration, but in the region south of 14°N encompassing the broad O2-deficient zone, the value was 26%, which compares with 18% previously determined for biomass transferring in a comparable way between epiplankton and planktostad in the same region.  相似文献

Copper and iron concentrations in three brown algae, Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus vesiculosus and Laminaria digitata (and additionally Mn in L. digitata) from the Irish west coast were determined using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Metal concentrations in the three species were indicative of prevailing bioavailable metal concentrations in situ but varied greatly between functional tissue parts, between sites and over time. Cu concentrations in actively growing tips of A. nodosum decreased over a 4-month period during autumn/winter, while Fe concentrations increased. Both Fe and Cu concentrations in different thallus sections of A. nodosum and F. vesiculosus increased with increasing age of thallus part in a clean site, but there was no consistent trend for F. vesiculosus from an industrialized site. Within sites, concentrations of all Cu and Fe were similar in both fucoids, but concentrations at the industrialized site were about twice as high as at the pristine site. In L. digitata, all three metals were highest in holdfasts, but had distinctly different distribution patterns in stipes and blade sections, which were most likely related to growth pattern and tissue function. Fe was lowest in meristematic and young blade regions, suggesting small-scale Fe limitation in actively growing tissue. Mn concentrations were higher in distal blade sections than in stipes, and Cu concentrations were highest in meristematic and young thallus parts.  相似文献

Particulate nitrogen (PN) and chlorophyll a (Chla) were measured in the northern reach of San Francisco Bay throughout 1980. The PN values were calculated as the differences between unfiltered and filtered (0·4 μm) samples analyzed using the UV-catalyzed peroxide digestion method. The Chla values were measured spectrophotometrically, with corrections made for phaeopigments. The plot of all PNChla data was found to be non-linear, and the concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) was found to be the best selector for linear subsets of the data. The best-fit slopes of PNChla plots, as determined by linear regression (model II), were interpreted to be the N: Chla ratios of phytoplankton. The Y-intercepts of the regression lines were considered to represent easily-oxidizable detrital nitrogen (EDN). In clear water ( < 10 mg l?1 SPM), the N: Chla ratio was 1·07 μg-at N per μg Chla. It decreased to 0·60 in the 10–18 mg l?1 range and averaged 0·31 in the remaining four ranges (18–35, 35–65, 65–155, and 155–470 mg l?1). The EDN values were less than 1 μg-at N l?1 in the clear water and increased monotonically to almost 12 μg-at N l?1 in the highest SPM range. The N: Chla ratios for the four highest SPM ranges agree well with data for phytoplankton in light-limited cultures. In these ranges, phytoplankton-N averaged only 20% of the PN, while EDN averaged 39% and refractory-N 41%.  相似文献

During the reproduction period of Fucus vesiculosus, which occurs only once a year (in May–June) along the Finnish coast of the northern Baltic Sea, a thick carpet of filamentous algae often covers hard substrates suitable for zygote settlement. By placing out artificial substrates into the field, monthly over a period of eight months prior to F. vesiculosus settlement (October 2001–June 2002), we investigated the autumn/winter/spring colonisation and succession of filamentous algae and their possible relationships with the settlement success of F. vesiculosus under naturally variable field conditions. The substrates exposed in October 2001 became covered by filamentous brown algal Pilayella littoralis mats, which persisted over the settlement period of F. vesiculosus, but now also were accompanied by large amounts of the filamentous green alga Cladophora glomerata. The substrates exposed from November 2001 onwards hosted smaller amounts of P. littoralis during the winter and different filamentous algal communities at the time of F. vesiculosus settlement, i.e. less P. littoralis and C. glomerata, but Dictyosiphon foeniculaceus, Ceramium tenuicorne and Ulva intestinalis instead. We observed recruits of F. vesiculosus on all substrates, except on the ones placed out in October 2001. Significantly more P. littoralis and C. glomerata on the October substrates may explain the failed F. vesiculosus recruitment, although we could not establish direct causal or correlational relationships between filamentous algae and F. vesiculosus settlement. We compared the results with a previous un-replicated pilot study in the same area demonstrating similar response patterns.  相似文献

Toxic effects of decomposing red algae on littoral organisms   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Large masses of filamentous red algae of the genera Polysiphonia, Rhodomela, and Ceramium are regularly washed up on beaches of the central Baltic Sea. As the algal masses start to decay, red coloured effluents leak into the water, and this tinge may be traced several hundred meters off shore. In this study, possible toxic effects of these effluents were tested on littoral organisms from different trophic levels. Effects on fertilisation, germination and juvenile survival of the brown seaweed Fucus vesiculosus were investigated, and mortality tests were performed on the crustaceans Artemia salina and Idotea baltica, as well as on larvae and adults of the fish Pomatoschistus microps. Fucus vesiculosus was the most sensitive species of the tested organisms to the red algal extract. The survival of F. vesiculosus recruits was reduced with 50% (LC50) when exposed to a concentration corresponding to 1.7 g l−1 dw red algae. The lethal concentration for I. baltica, A. salina and P. microps were approximately ten times higher. The toxicity to A. salina was reduced if the algal extract was left to decompose during two weeks but the decline in toxicity was not affected by different light or temperature conditions. This study indicates that the filamentous red algae in the central Baltic Sea may produce and release compounds with negative effects on the littoral ecosystem. The effects may be particularly serious for the key species F. vesiculosus, which reproduce in autumn when filamentous red algal blooms are most severe.  相似文献

Determination of nitrate in seawater first requires its reduction to nitrite. Construction of a reductor column for use during continuous flow analysis at sea is described. Novel use is made of an alloy of cadmium and copper (5050ww) crushed to between 500 and 350 μm. Its performance is similar to that of the cadmium wire type of reductor but offers advantages of easier preparation and control of reductor volume.  相似文献

Preference tests were performed over a two-week period in September 2001 in which isopods (Idotea baltica) and amphipods (Gammarus oceanicus) were offered choices of three common species of algae from the Baltic Sea: Enteromorpha intestinalis, Cladophora spp., and Fucus vesiculosus. After a 48-hour starvation period, 20 individuals of each grazer species were placed in aquaria containing approximately 1.0 g of each algal species. Fifteen trials for each grazer species were run for 20 hours. We found that G. oceanicus ate significantly more Cladophora spp. and E. intestinalis than F. vesiculosus (p<0.001), with a preference order of: Cladophora spp.>E. intestinalis>F. vesiculosus. Similarly, I. baltica ate significantly more of both the filamentous green algae than F. vesiculosus (p<0.001), with a preference order of: E. intestinalis>Cladophora spp.>F. vesiculosus. Given the preference of isopods and amphipods for filamentous green algae, we might expect these algae to be maintained at low biomass levels. However, this is clearly not the case in the Baltic Sea. Nutrient enrichment (bottom-up effects) is the accepted dominant reason for the non-controlling impact of algal grazers, but other reasons may include cascading trophic effects resulting from the removal of large piscivorous fish (top-down effects).  相似文献

The relationship between macroalgal assemblages and abiotic factors was quantified by gradient analyses in an area where long-term changes in macroalgal depth distributions have previously been documented. Biomass data from 4, 6, 8 and 10 m depth in an area of similar salinity (5) and substrate (rock) in the northern Baltic Proper was constrained by a set of environmental variables defining different aspects of abiotic control of species distributions (sediment cover, effective fetch, clarity index, the curvature and slope of the bottom, and direction of exposure) in multivariate analyses at different scales. Fucus vesiculosus dominated the biomass at 4, 6 and 8 m depth, and Furcellaria lumbricalis at 10 m. The applied models explained 30.7–53.3% of the total variance in community structure, and 49.3–60.9% when analysed separately for each depth. A separate analysis of species depth distributions demonstrated that effective fetch was most strongly related to upper limits of the algal belts, sediment cover to the lower limit and density of the F. vesiculosus belt, and clarity index to the lower limits of F. vesiculosus, perennial red algae, and of the red algal and Sphacelaria spp. belts. The results show a strong correlation between environmental variables and vegetation structure even on a small, local scale in the northern Baltic Proper, indicating a high suitability of the phytobenthic zone for environmental monitoring. The results add to previous studies that show a strong importance of abiotic factors on large-scale variation in phytobentic community composition in the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

Variations in the natural particle size spectra following the addition of Venezuelan crude oil in seawater (? 6 μl litre?1) were related to the mixing speeds of the emulsion and were independent of the oil concentration. The particle spectrum and feeding behaviour of Meganyctiphanes norvegica and Calanus hyperboreus were both modified. Artificially created oil droplets were suitable in size for ready ingestion by zooplankton. The growth and survival of contaminated Acartia hudsonica were rapidly and significantly reduced. Groups under starvation conditions showed similar decreases to those exposed to oil. During a depuration period, treated copepods exhibited growth rates similar to those of untreated specimens. The input and noxious effects of crude oil are discussed with special reference to particle size distribution and chemosensory feeding behaviour.  相似文献
