We have discovered that the spectrum of the well-known dwarf nova EM Cyg is contaminated by light from a K25V star (in addition to the K-type mass donor star). The K25V star contributes approximately 16 per cent of the light from the system and if not taken into account has a considerable effect upon radial velocity measurements of the mass donor star. We obtain a new radial velocity amplitude for the mass donor star of K 2=202±3 km s1, compared with the value of K 2=135±3 km s1 obtained in Stover, Robinson & Nather's classic study of EM Cyg. The revised value of the amplitude, combined with a measurement of rotational broadening of the mass donor, v  sin  i =140±6 km s1, leads to a new mass ratio of q M 2 M 1=0.88±0.05. This solves a long-standing problem with EM Cyg, because Stover et al.'s measurements indicated a mass ratio q >1, a value that should have led to dynamically unstable mass transfer for the secondary mass deduced by Stover et al. The revised value of the mass ratio, combined with the orbital inclination i =67±2°, leads to masses of 0.99±0.12 M and 1.12±0.08 M for the mass donor and white dwarf respectively. The mass donor is evolved, because it has a later spectral type (K3) than its mass would imply.
We discuss whether the K star could be physically associated with EM Cyg or not, and present the results of the spectroscopic study.  相似文献

From photoelectric observations of V 337 Aql a new solution is carried out. Transit at primary eclipse in disagreement with the Wright-Dugan results is found. Both Russell-Merrill and Kitamura methods of light curve solution are used. The slight period variation and the distortions of the light curve would support the idea that a mass exchange could be in act.  相似文献

We use Spitzer IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 μm near-infrared data from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS), optical B, V and I and Two-Micron All-Sky Survey K s-band data to produce mass surface density maps of M81. The IRAC 3.6- and 4.5-μm data, whilst dominated by emission from old stellar populations, are corrected for small-scale contamination by young stars and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission. The I -band data are used to produce a mass surface density map by a   B − V   colour correction, following the method of Bell and de Jong. We fit a bulge and exponential disc to each mass map, and subtract these components to reveal the non-axisymmetric mass surface density. From the residual mass maps, we are able to extract the amplitude and phase of the density wave, using azimuthal profiles. The response of the gas is observed via dust emission in the 8-μm IRAC band, allowing a comparison between the phase of the stellar density wave and gas shock. The relationship between this angular offset and radius suggests that the spiral structure is reasonably long-lived and allows the position of corotation to be determined.  相似文献

We present the first study of the orbital period variations of five neglected Algol-type eclipsing binaries TT And, V342 Aql, RW Cap, BZ Cas and TW Lac, using their O–C diagrams gathered from all available times of eclipse minima. These O–C diagrams indicate that short term periodic variations superimposed on secular period increases as expected in mass transferring Algols. However, due to short time coverage of the data, the secular period increase is not clear in the case of BZ Cas and V342 Aql. The secular period increase is interpreted in terms of the combined effect of mass transfer between the components of the system and the mass loss by a stellar wind from the system. The mass transfer rates from the less massive secondary components to the more massive primaries for non-conservative cases would be about 10−7M/yr and 10−8M/yr for RW Cap and V342 Aql, respectively, and 10−9M/yr for TT And and TW Lac. Therefore, the Algol systems RW Cap and V342 Aql have the largest mass transfer rate, which could be in Case AB type, while those of the Algol systems TT And and TW Lac display the slow mass transfer rate and they could be in Case B type. The sinusoidal forms of the orbital period variations of all five Algol systems can be due to either by the light-time effects due to unseen components in these systems, or by the cyclic magnetic activity effects of the cool secondary components. The possible third bodies in all five Algol binaries would have masses larger than one solar mass. If these hypothetical large massive third bodies were normal stars, they should be detectable. Therefore, new photometric and spectroscopic observations of these systems and careful analyses of those data are required. Otherwise, the cyclic magnetic activity effects of the secondary components could be the basis of a working hypothesis in explaining the cyclic period variations of these systems.  相似文献

$$UBVJHKLM$$ photometry for the carbon Mira star V CrB are presented. The infrared observations were carried out in the time interval 1989–2018, while the $$U$$, $$B$$, and $$V$$ data were obtained in 2001–2014. The light and color curves are analyzed. The pulsation period of V CrB has been found to be $$355\overset{\textrm{d}}{.}2$$ in the infrared $$JHKLM$$ bands and $$352^{\textrm{d}}$$ for the optical $$BV$$ band. In the $$JHK$$ bands, apart from periodic pulsations, there are distinct sinusoidal variations in the average brightness level with a characteristic period of $${\sim}8300$$ days. Color–magnitude relationships have been revealed for the infrared and optical bands. The phase curves exhibit the wavelength dependence of the brightness variability amplitude. The light curves for various bands and colors are discussed. We have constructed the model of a spherically symmetric circumstellar dust envelope that allows the observed spectral energy distribution at both maximum and minimum light to be reproduced equally well (within the model assumptions) and is consistent with the observations of V CrB by differential speckle polarimetry. The model is characterized by the following parameters: the optical depth is $$\tau_{K}=0.33$$, the inner and outer radii of the envelope are 8 and 40 000 AU, respectively. The envelope contains spherical carbon dust grains ($$3/4$$ by mass) and silicon carbide dust grains. Dust grains with a radius of 0.5 $$\mu$$m account for $$90\%$$ of the envelope mass. The remaining $$10\%$$ of the mass is accounted for by finer dust with a grain radius of 0.1 $$\mu$$m. Based on the observational data, we have estimated the bolometric flux from V CrB: $$2.6\times 10^{-7}$$ and $$5.1\times 10^{-7}$$ erg cm$${}^{-2}$$ s$${}^{-1}$$ at minimum and maximum light, respectively. The effective temperature of the star is $$T_{\textrm{max}}=3000$$ K at maximum light and $$T_{\textrm{min}}=2400$$ K at minimum light.  相似文献

We report the discovery, in an Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer ( EUVE ) short-wavelength spectrum, of an unresolved hot white dwarf companion to the 5th magnitude B5Vp star HR 2875. This is the first time that a non-interacting white dwarf+B star binary has been discovered: previously, the earliest type of star known with a white dwarf companion was Sirius (A1V). As the white dwarf must have evolved from a main-sequence progenitor with a mass greater than that of a B5V star (≯6.0 M⊙), this places a lower limit on the maximum mass for white dwarf progenitors, with important implications for our knowledge of the initial–final mass relation. Assuming a pure-hydrogen atmospheric composition, we constrain the temperature of the white dwarf to be between 39 000 and 49 000 K. We also argue that this degenerate star is likely to have a mass significantly greater than the mean mass for white dwarf stars (≈0.55 M⊙). Finally, we suggest that other bright B stars (e.g. θ Hya) detected in the extreme ultraviolet surveys of the ROSAT Wide Field Camera and EUVE may also be hiding hot white dwarf companions.  相似文献

Photoelectric observations in B and V for the FZ Del system are presented and its light curves are analyzed. Absolute parameters are obtained. The system shows a near contact subgaint secondary component with a likely K1 spectral type. The O-C curve is presented and probably a secular orbital period variations is detected on a timescale of about 6.9×106 yrs, suggesting thermal timescale mass transfer. A new light elements for the system have been obtained. The system can be considered as an early stage of conservative case of mass transfer. In our evolutionary population synthesis models, samples of binaries are reproduced by a ' patched ' Monte Carlo simulation and the stellar masses, integrated   J ,  H ,  K ,  L ,  L 2  and M magnitudes, mass-to-light ratios and broad colours involving infrared bands are presented for an extensive set of instantaneous-burst binary stellar populations. In addition, the fluctuations in the integrated colours, which have been given by Zhang et al., are reduced.
By comparing the results for binary stellar populations with (Model A) and without (Model B) binary interactions, we show that the inclusion of binary interactions makes the stellar mass of a binary stellar population smaller (  ∼3.6–4.5  per cent during the past 15 Gyr), magnitudes greater (except   U , ∼ 0.18 mag  at the most), colours bluer (∼0.15 mag for   V − K   at the most) and mass-to-light ratios greater (∼0.06 for K band) except those in the U and B passbands at higher metallicities. Binary interactions make the V magnitude less sensitive to age, and R and I magnitudes more sensitive to metallicity.
Given an age, the absolute values of the differences in the stellar mass, magnitudes and mass-to-light ratios (except those in the U and B bands) between Models A and B reach a maximum at   Z = 0.0001  , i.e. the effects of binary interactions on these parameters reach a maximum, while the differences in some colours reach a maximum at   Z ∼ 0.01–0.0004  . In contrast, the absolute value of the difference in the stellar mass is minimal at   Z = 0.03  ; those in the   U ,  B ,  V   magnitudes and the mass-to-light ratios in the U and B bands reach a minimum at   Z ∼ 0.01–0.004  .  相似文献

We have performed high-speed UBV photometric observations on the peculiar binary V Sagittae. Using three new eclipse timings we update the orbital ephemeris and convert it to a dynamical time-scale (TDB). We also searched for quasi-periodic oscillations but did not detect them. Using the Wilson–Devinney algorithm we have modelled the light curve to find the stellar parameters of V Sge. We find that the system is a detached binary but that the primary star is very close to filling its Roche lobe, while the secondary star fills 90 per cent of its Roche lobe volume. We find temperatures of the primary and the secondary star to be T 1=41 000 K and T 2=22 000 K. We find i =72° and masses of 0.8 M and 3.3 M for the primary and secondary stars respectively. De-archived Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ) spectroscopy of V Sge shows evidence of mass loss via a wind or winds. In addition we report radio observations of V Sge during an optical high state at 2 cm, 3.6 cm and 6 cm wavelengths. The 3.6 cm emission is increased by a factor of more than six compared with an earlier detection in a previous optical high state.  相似文献

In the first part of this work, the empirical correlation of stellar surface brightness F V with ( I c− K ) broad-band colour is investigated by using a sample of stars cooler than the Sun. A bilinear correlation is found to represent well the brightness of G, K and M giant stars. The change in slope occurs at ( I c− K )∼2.1 or at about the transition from K to M spectral types. The same relationship is also investigated for dwarf stars and found to be distinctly different from that of the giants. The dwarf star correlation differs by an average of −0.4 in ( I c− K ) or by a maximum in F V of ∼−0.1, positioning it below that of the giants, with both trends tending towards convergence for the hotter stars in our sample. The flux distribution derived from the F V −( I c− K ) relationship for the giant stars, together with that derived from an F V −( V − K ) relationship and the blackbody flux distribution, is then utilized to compute synthetic light V and colour ( V − R )c, ( V − I )c and ( V − K ) curves of cool spotted stars. We investigate the effects on the amplitudes of the curves by using these F V –colour relations and by assuming the effective gravity of the spots to be lower than the gravity of the unspotted photosphere. We find that the amplitudes produced by using the F V −( I c− K ) relationship are larger than those produced by the other two brightness correlations, meaning smaller and/or warmer spots.  相似文献

Intermediate-resolution (0.5–1 Å) optical spectroscopy of the cataclysmic variable (CV) SY Cnc reveals the spectrum of the donor star. Our data enable us to resolve the orbital motion of the donor and provide a new orbital solution, binary mass ratio and spectral classification. We find that the donor star has spectral-type G8 ± 2 V and orbits the white dwarf with   P = 0.382 3753 ± 0.000 0003  d,   K 2= 88.0 ± 2.9  km s−1 and   V sin  i = 75.5 ± 6.5  km s−1. Our values are significantly different from previous works and lead to   q = M 2/ M 1= 1.18 ± 0.14  . This is one of the highest mass ratios known in a CV and is very robust, because it is based on resolving the rotational broadening over a large number of metallic absorption lines. The donor could be a slightly evolved main sequence or descendant from a massive star which underwent an episode of thermal time-scale mass transfer.  相似文献

I present pointed ROSAT PSPC observations of the pre-cataclysmic binary V471 Tauri. The hard X-ray emission (>0.4 keV) is not eclipsed by the K star, demonstrating conclusively that this component cannot be emitted by the white dwarf. Instead I show that its spectrum and luminosity are consistent with coronal emission from the tidally spun-up K star. The star is more active than other K stars in the Hyades, but equally active as K stars in the Pleiades with the same rotation periods, demonstrating that rotation — and not age — is the key parameter in determining the level of stellar activity.   The soft X-ray emission (<0.4 keV) is emitted predominately by the white dwarf and is modulated on its spin period. I find that the pulse profile is stable on time-scales of hours and years, supporting the idea that it is caused by the opacity of accreted material. The profile itself shows that the magnetic field configuration of the white dwarf is dipolar and that the magnetic axis passes through the centre of the star.   There is an absorption feature in the light curve of the white dwarf, which occurs at a time when our line of sight passes within a stellar radius of the K star. The column density and duration of this feature imply a volume and mass for the absorber that are similar to those of coronal mass ejections of the Sun.   Finally I suggest that the spin–orbit beat period detected in the optical by Clemens et al. may be the result of the interaction of the K-star wind with the magnetic field of the white dwarf.  相似文献

At the temperature of Pluto (~43°K) the only gas which would neither condense nor escape is neon. Since neon is cosmically abundant it is suggested that Pluto may have a fairly extensive atmosphere consisting of almost pure neon. The possibility that such an atmosphere exists is analyzed, along with the possibility that oceans of liquid neon may exist at the surface.A neon atmosphere would not produce any observable absorption lines. However, if it were very thick, then Rayleigh scattering would result in Pluto having a much higher albedo in the ultraviolet than in the visual, which is not observed to be the case. This enables us to set an upper limit on the mass of Pluto's atmosphere.  相似文献

We analyze the photometric and spectroscopic observations of the young pre-cataclysmic variable (pre-CV) V477 Lyr. The masses of both binary components have been corrected by analyzing their radial velocity curves. We show that agreement between the theoretical and observed light curves of the object is possible for several sets of its physical parameters corresponding to the chosen temperature of the primary component. The final parameters of V477 Lyr have been established by comparing observational data with evolutionary tracks for planetary nebula nuclei. The derived effective temperature of the O subdwarf is higher than that estimated by analyzing the object’s ultraviolet spectra by more than 10000 K. This is in agreement with the analogous results obtained previously for the young pre-CVs V664 Cas and UU Sge. The secondary component of V477 Lyr has been proven to have a more than 25-fold luminosity excess compared to main-sequence stars of similar mass. Comparison of the physical parameters for the cool stars in young pre-CVs indicates that their luminosities do not correlate with the masses of the objects. The observed luminosity excesses in such stars show a close correlation with the post-common-envelope lifetime of the systems and should be investigated within the framework of the theory of their relaxation to the state of main-sequence stars.  相似文献

Simultaneous spectroscopic and photometric observations of the Z Cam type dwarf nova SY Cancri were used to obtain absolute flux calibrations. A comparison of the photometric calibration with a wide-slit spectrophotometric calibration showed that either method is equally satisfactory. A radial velocity study of the secondary star, made using the far-red Na  i doublet, yielded a semi-amplitude of   K 2= 127 ± 23 km s−1  . Taking the published value of  86 ± 9 km s−1  for K 1 gives a mass ratio of   q = M 2/ M 1= 0.68 ± 0.14  ; this is very different from the value of  1.13 ± 0.35  quoted in the literature. Using the new lower mass ratio, and constraining the mass of the white dwarf to be within reasonable limits, then leads to a mass for the secondary star that is substantially less than would be expected for its orbital period if it satisfied a main-sequence mass–radius relationship. We find a spectral type of M0 that is consistent with that expected for a main-sequence star of the low mass we have found. However, in order to fill its Roche lobe, the secondary must be significantly larger than a main-sequence star of that mass and spectral type. The secondary is definitely not a normal main-sequence star.  相似文献

This is the second paper in a series reporting a new method developed to estimate the fundamental atmospheric parameters of effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity simultaneously. In the first paper three parameters were estimated using only photometric indices in the uvby color system. Whereas, in this paper, we use BVRI and JHK color systems. Using the model atmosphere grids, all three parameter values were estimated with respect to both [(B–V):(V–R)] and [(B–V):(R–I)], as well as [(V–K):(H–K)] and [(J–K):(H–K)] pair indices. It was confirmed that (B–V) and (V–K) indices are good temperature indicators, but all color indices for the BVRI and JHK systems are very poor indicators of metallicity and surface gravity. This new method was applied to a number of field dwarfs and giants, and the results were compared with those from the uvby color system. We found that the JHK color system can compete with the uvby system only in the estimation of temperature.  相似文献

V471 Tau was discovered as a spectroscopic binary by Wilson (General Catalogue of Stellar Radial Velocities, p. 44, 1953). It is the prototype of a post-common envelope system and a progenitor of a cataclysmic binary. The system consists of a cool red dwarf, K2 V, very probably a main sequence star and a hot white dwarf. The object was classified as a close binary with an orbital period of around 0.5 days. Moreover, on the light curve are observed light variations with a period of 191 days, which are connected with an ellipsoidal shape of the red dwarf as well as with the migration of spots on the surface of this cool component. The eclipse of the white dwarf in the binary remains 49 minutes and declines to the minimum and the increase from the minimum takes only 55 s. Such photometric behaviour hinders obtaining good eclipses. In this paper we have obtained during four years seven eclipses with high time resolution with all four contacts to reach precise times of minima. Fortunately these times of the minima show a change of trend in the (O–C) diagram, and we were able to decide about the physical processes responsible for the behaviour of the (O–C) diagram. We showed that this behaviour is caused by a third body in the system with an orbital period of 33.2 years, and its physical and geometrical parameters are presented. For an inclination larger than 35° we get the mass of this body below the stable hydrogen-burning limit and thus most probably the candidate would be a brown dwarf.  相似文献
