We present an analysis of UBVRI data from the selected area SA 141. By applying recalibrated methods of measuring ultraviolet excess (UVX), we approximate abundances and absolute magnitudes for 368 stars over 1.3 deg2 out to distances over 10 kpc. With the density distribution constrained from our previous photometric parallax investigations and with sufficient accounting for the metallicity bias in the UVX method, we are able to compare the vertical abundance distribution to those measured in previous studies. We find that the abundance distribution has an underlying uniform component consistent with previous spectroscopic results that posit a monometallic thick disc and halo with abundances of  [Fe/H]=−0.8  and −1.4, respectively. However, there are a number of outlying data points that may indicate contamination by more metal-rich halo streams. The absence of vertical abundance gradients in the Galactic stellar populations and the possible presence of interloping halo streams would be consistent with expectations from merger models of Galaxy formation. We find that our UVX method has limited sensitivity in exploring the metallicity distribution of the distant Galactic halo, owing to the poor constraint on the UBV properties of very metal-poor stars. The derivation of metallicities from broad-band UBV photometry remains fundamentally sound for the exploration of the halo but is in need of both improved calibration and superior data.  相似文献

The formation and evolution of elliptical galaxies (EGs) are still an open question. In particular, recent observations suggest that EGs are not only simple spheroidal systems of old stars. In this paper, we analyse a sample of EGs selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in order to study the star-forming activity in local EGs. Among these 487 ellipticals, we find that 13 EGs show unambiguous evidence of recent star formation activity betrayed by conspicuous nebular emission lines. Using the evolutionary stellar population synthesis models and Lick absorption line indices, we derive stellar ages, metallicities and α-element abundances, and thus reconstruct the star formation and chemical evolution history of the star-forming elliptical galaxies (SFEGs) in our sample.
We find that SFEGs have relative younger stellar population age, higher metallicity and lower stellar mass, and that their star formation history can be well described by a recent minor and short starburst superimposed on old stellar component. We also detect 11 E+A galaxies whose stellar population properties are closer to those of quiescent (normal) ellipticals than to star-forming ones. However, from the analysis of their absorption line indices, we note that our E+A galaxies show a significant fraction of intermediate-age stellar populations, remarkably different from the quiescent galaxies. This might suggest an evolutionary link between E+As and star-forming ellipticals. Finally, we confirm the relations between age, metallicity, α-element abundance and stellar mass for local EGs.  相似文献

The results of a comparative analysis of the elemental abundances in the atmospheres of 14 red giants with high Galactic space velocities are presented. For almost all of the chemical elements considered, the their abundance trends with metallicity correspond to those constructed for thick-disk dwarfs. In the case of sodium, the main factor affecting the [Na/Fe] abundance in the stellar atmosphere for red giants is the surface gravity that characterizes the degree of development of the convective envelope. The difference between the [Na/Fe] abundances in the atmospheres of thin- and thick-disk red giants has been confirmed.  相似文献

Using principal component analysis, we have studied the equivalent widths of optical spectral lines of 41 Galactic globular clusters and 22 young stellar clusters. We have discovered that some characteristic spectral lines, such as the CN, Ca IIK, Ca IIH and MgI+MgII lines, are rather sensitive to metallicity. We have also found some lines that may be used as indicators of age, e.g. Hδ, Hγ, Hβ and H. These lines can help us to disentangle the coupling effects of age and metallicity in the clusters.  相似文献

The large majority of extragalactic star cluster studies performed to date essentially use multicolour photometry, combined with theoretical stellar synthesis models, to derive ages, masses, extinction estimates and metallicities. M31 offers a unique laboratory for studies of globular cluster (GC) systems. In this paper, we obtain new age estimates for 91 M31 GCs, based on improved photometric data, updated theoretical stellar synthesis models and sophisticated new fitting methods. In particular, we used photometric measurements from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), which, in combination with optical photometry, can partially break the well-known age–metallicity degeneracy operating at ages in excess of a few Gyr. We show robustly that previous age determinations based on photometric data were affected significantly by this age–metallicity degeneracy. Except for one cluster, the ages of our other sample GCs are all older than 1 Gyr. Their age distribution shows populations of young- and intermediate-age GCs, peaking at ∼3 and 8 Gyr, respectively, as well as the 'usual' complement of well-known old GCs, i.e. GCs of similar age as the majority of the Galactic GCs. Our results also show that although there is significant scatter in metallicity at any age, there is a notable lack of young metal-poor and old metal-rich GCs, which might be indicative of an underlying age–metallicity relationship among the M31 GC population.  相似文献

The distribution of galaxy properties in groups and clusters holds important information on galaxy evolution and growth of structure in the Universe. While clusters have received appreciable attention in this regard, the role of groups as fundamental to formation of the present-day galaxy population has remained relatively unaddressed. Here, we present stellar ages, metallicities and α-element abundances derived using Lick indices for 67 spectroscopically confirmed members of the NGC 5044 galaxy group with the aim of shedding light on galaxy evolution in the context of the group environment.
We find that galaxies in the NGC 5044 group show evidence for a strong relationship between stellar mass and metallicity, consistent with their counterparts in both higher and lower mass groups and clusters. Galaxies show no clear trend of age or α-element abundance with mass, but these data form a tight sequence when fitted simultaneously in age, metallicity and stellar mass. In the context of the group environment, our data support the tidal disruption of low-mass galaxies at small group-centric radii, as evident from an apparent lack of galaxies below  ∼109 M  within ∼100 kpc of the brightest group galaxy. Using a joint analysis of absorption- and emission-line metallicities, we are able to show that the star-forming galaxy population in the NGC 5044 group appears to require gas removal to explain the ∼1.5 dex offset between absorption- and emission-line metallicities observed in some cases. A comparison with other stellar population properties suggests that this gas removal is dominated by galaxy interactions with the hot intragroup medium.  相似文献

We have compared the kinematics and metallicity of the main-sequence binary and single uvby F stars from the Hipparcos catalog to see if the populations of these stars originate from the same statistical ensemble. The velocity dispersions of the known unresolved binary F stars have been found to be dramatically smaller than those of the single F stars. This suggests that the population of these binaries is, in fact, younger than that of the single stars, which is further supported by the difference in metal abundance: the binaries turn out to be, on average, more metal rich than the single stars. So, we conclude that the population of these binaries is indeed younger than that of the single F stars. Comparison of the single F stars with the C binaries (binary candidates identified in Suchkov & McMaster) has shown, on the other hand, that the latter stars are, on average, older than the single F stars. We suggest that the age difference between the single F stars, known unresolved binaries, and C binaries is associated with the fact that stellar evolution in a binary systems depends on the binary components' mass ratio and separation, with these parameters being statistically very different for the known binaries and C binaries (e.g., mostly substellar secondaries in C binaries vs. stellar secondaries in known binaries). In general we conclude that the populations of known binaries, C binaries, and single F stars do not belong to the same statistical ensemble. The implications of the discovered age difference between these populations along with the corresponding differences in kinematics and metallicity should be important not only for understanding the evolution of stars but also for the history of star formation and the evolution of the local Galactic disk.  相似文献

We analyse two recent computations of Type II supernova nucleosynthesis by Woosley & Weaver (hereafter WW95) and Thielemann, Nomoto & Hashimoto (hereafter TNH96), focusing on the ability to reproduce the observed [Mg/Fe] ratios in various galaxy types. We show that the yields of oxygen and total metallicity are in good agreement. However, TNH96 models produce more magnesium in the intermediate and less iron in the upper mass range of Type II supernovae than WW95 models. To investigate the significance of these discrepancies for chemical evolution, we calculate simple stellar population yields for both sets of models and different initial mass function slopes. We conclude that the Mg yields of WW95 do not suffice to explain the [Mg/Fe] overabundance either in giant elliptical galaxies and bulges or in metal-poor stars in the solar neighbourhood and the Galactic halo. Calculating the chemical evolution in the solar neighbourhood according to the standard infall model, we find that, using WW95 and TNH96 nucleosynthesis, the solar magnesium abundance is underestimated by 29 and 7 per cent, respectively.   We include the relaxation of the instantaneous mixing approximation in chemical evolution models by splitting the gas component into two different phases. In additional simulations of the chemical evolution in the solar neighbourhood, we discuss various time-scales for the mixing of the stellar ejecta with the interstellar medium. We find that a delay of the order of 108 yr leads to a better fit of the observational data in the [Mg/Fe]–[Fe/H] diagram without destroying the agreement with solar element abundances and the age–metallicity relation.  相似文献

We performed a photometric multicolour survey of the core of the Canis Major overdensity at     , reaching   V ∼ 22  and covering  0.3 × 1.0  arcmin2. The main aim is to unravel the complex mixture of stellar populations toward this Galactic direction, where in the recent past important signatures of an accretion event have been claimed to be detected. While our previous investigations were based on disjointed pointings aimed at revealing the large-scale structure of the third Galactic Quadrant, we now focus on a complete coverage of a smaller field centred on the Canis Major overdensity. A large wavelength baseline, in the UBVRI bands, allows us to build up a suite of colour–colour and colour–magnitude diagrams, providing a much better diagnostic tool to disentangle the stellar populations of the region. In fact, the simple use of one colour–magnitude diagram, widely employed in all the previous studies defending the existence of the Canis Major galaxy, does not allow one to separate the effects of the different parameters (reddening, age, metallicity and distance) involved in the interpretation of data, forcing to rely on heavy modelling. In agreement with our previous studies, in the same general region of the Milky Way, we recognize a young stellar population compatible with the expected structure and extension of the Local (Orion) and Outer (Norma–Cygnus) spiral arms in the Third Galactic Quadrant. Moreover, we interpret the conspicuous intermediate-age metal-poor population as belonging to the Galactic thick disc, distorted by the effect of strong disc warping at this latitude, and to the Galactic halo.  相似文献

In the previous years, p-mode oscillations (pressure oscillations stochastically excited by convection) have been detected in several solar-like stars thanks to the ground-based spectroscopic and space spectroscopic and photometric observations. We study the importance of seismic constraints on stellar modeling and the impact of their accuracy on reducing the uncertainties of global stellar parameters (i.e. mass, age, etc.). We use the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method to analyze the sensitivity of stellar models to seismic constraints. In this context, we construct a grid of evolutionary sequences for solar-like stars with varying age and mass. Around each model of this grid, we evaluate the partial derivatives with respect to a large set of free parameters: mass ?, age τ, mixing-length parameter α, initial helium abundance Y 0, and initial metallicity Z/X 0. Masses between 0.9 and 1.55 M and central hydrogen abundances from Xc=0.7 to 0.05 have been considered in this study.  相似文献

Data from our compiled catalog of spectroscopically determined magnesium abundances in dwarfs and subgiants with accurate parallaxes are used to select Galactic halo stars according to kinematic criteria and to identify presumably accreted stars among them. Accreted stars are shown to constitute the majority in the Galactic halo. They came into the Galaxy from disrupted dwarf satellite galaxies. We analyze the relations between the relative magnesium abundances, metallicities, and Galactic orbital elements for protodisk and accreted halo stars. We show that the relative magnesium abundances in protodisk halo stars are virtually independent of metallicity and lie within a fairly narrow range, while presumably accreted stars demonstrate a large spread in relative magnesium abundances up to negative [Mg/Fe]. This behavior of protodisk halo stars suggests that the interstellar matter in the early Galaxy mixed well at the halo formation phase. The mean metallicity of magnesium-poor ([Mg/Fe] < 0.2 dex) accreted stars has been found to be displaced toward the negative values when passing from stars with low azimuthal velocities (|Θ| < 50 km s?1) to those with high ones at Δ[Fe/H] ≈ ?0.5 dex. The mean apogalactic radii and inclinations of the orbits also increase with increasing absolute value of |Θ|, while their eccentricities decrease. As a result, negative radial and vertical gradients in relative magnesium abundances are observed in the accreted halo in the absence of correlations between the [Mg/Fe] ratios and other orbital elements, while these correlations are found at a high significance level for genetically related Galactic stars. Based on the above properties of accreted stars and our additional arguments, we surmise that as the masses of dwarf galaxies decrease, the maximum SN II masses and, hence, the yield of α-elements in them also decrease. In this case, the relation between the [Mg/Fe] ratios and the inclinations and sizes of the orbits of accreted stars is in complete agreement with numerical simulations of dynamical processes during the interaction of galaxies. Thus, the behavior of the magnesium abundance in accreted stars suggests that the satellite galaxies are disrupted and lose their stars en masse only after dynamical friction reduces significantly the sizes of their orbits and drags them into the Galactic plane. Less massive satellite galaxies are disrupted even before their orbits change appreciably under tidal forces.  相似文献

The gas fraction is important for understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies. It is found that there are linear correlations between the atomic-gas-to-stellar mass ratio (G/S) and stellar population properties (age, metallicity and stellar mass) of galaxies. However, only a nearby galaxy sample was used. This work investigates how the correlations change with the redshift limit of galaxies, using three volume limited galaxy samples selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). It shows that there are linear correlations between the G/S and logarithmic values of stellar age, metallicity and mass, for all galaxy samples. It also shows that the linear correlation between G/S and stellar age is much better than others and possibly can be used in future studies. In addition, the scatters of the fitted correlations are found to increase with upper redshift limit of sample galaxies.  相似文献

Planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) offer the unique opportunity to study both the population and evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars, by means of the morphological type of the nebula. Using observations from our LMC PN morphological survey, and including images available in the Hubble Space Telescope Data Archive and published chemical abundances, we find that asymmetry in PNe is strongly correlated with a younger stellar population, as indicated by the abundance of elements that are unaltered by stellar evolution (Ne, Ar, and S). While similar results have been obtained for Galactic PNe, this is the first demonstration of the relationship for extragalactic PNe. We also examine the relation between morphology and abundance of the products of stellar evolution. We found that asymmetric PNe have higher nitrogen and lower carbon abundances than symmetric PNe. Our two main results are broadly consistent with the predictions of stellar evolution if the progenitors of asymmetric PNe have on average larger masses than the progenitors of symmetric PNe. The results bear on the question of formation mechanisms for asymmetric PNe-specifically, that the genesis of PNe structure should relate strongly to the population type, and by inference the mass, of the progenitor star and less strongly on whether the central star is a member of a close binary system.  相似文献

By considering the physical and orbital characteristics of G type stars and their exoplanets, we examine the association between stellar mass and its metallicity that follows a power law. Similar relationship is also obtained in case of single and multiplanetary stellar systems suggesting that, \(\hbox {Sun}^{\prime }\)s present mass is about 1% higher than the estimated value for its metallicity. Further, for all the stellar systems with exoplanets, association between the planetary mass and the stellar metallicity is investigated, that suggests planetary mass is independent of stellar metallicity. Interestingly, in case of multiplanetary systems, planetary mass is linearly dependent on the stellar absolute metallicity, that suggests, metal rich stars produce massive (\(\ge \)1 Jupiter mass) planets compared to metal poor stars. This study also suggests that there is a solar system planetary missing mass of \({\sim }\)0.8 Jupiter mass. It is argued that probably 80% of missing mass is accreted onto the Sun and about 20% of missing mass might have been blown off to the outer solar system (beyond the present Kuiper belt) during early history of solar system formation. We find that, in case of single planetary systems, planetary mass is independent of stellar metallicity with an implication of their non-origin in the host star’s protoplanetary disk and probably are captured from the space. Final investigation of dependency of the orbital distances of planets on the host stars metallicity reveals that inward migration of planets is dominant in case of single planetary systems supporting the result that most of the planets in single planetary systems are captured from the space.  相似文献

A comparison is made between the age–metallicity relations obtained from four different types of studies: F and G stars in the solar neighbourhood, analysis of open clusters, galactic structure studies with the stellar population synthesis technique and chemical evolution models. Metallicities of open clusters are corrected for the effects of the radial gradient, which we find to be −0.09 dex kpc−1 and most likely constant in time. We do not correct for the vertical gradient, because its existence and value are not firmly established.
Stars and clusters trace a similar age–metallicity relation, showing an excess of rather metal-rich objects in the age range 5–9 Gyr. Galactic structure studies tend to give a more metal-poor relation than chemical evolution models. Neither relation explains the presence of old, relatively metal-rich stars and clusters. This might be caused by uncertainties in the ages of the local stars, or pre-enrichment of the disc with material from the bulge, possibly as a result of a merger event in the early phases of the formation of our Galaxy.  相似文献

Spectra synthesis is entering a new era with the availability of large and high-quality spectroscopic data and full spectrum fitting methods. Establishing the reliability whether the STARLIGHT code (a full spectrum fitting code, Cid Fernandes et al. (Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 358:363, 2005)) is suitable to study the properties of various types of galaxies is vital to galaxy study. In testing this possibility, Galactic globular clusters (GCs) provide an excellent medium. Taking the 40 Galactic GCs as an example in our work, we analyze their integrated spectra from Schiavon et al. (Astrophys. J. Suppl. 160:163, 2005) and obtain their mixtures of stellar populations that best represents their composite nature. Through analyzing the distributions of stellar ages and metallicities respectively, we find that the stellar metallicity distribution is centered at a low value and the stellar age distribution is very scattered. To compare with the literature, we also calculate the light-weighted ages and metallicities of GCs, and we find that the light-weighted metallicities agree with the literature, while the light-weighted ages are lower than those of the literature. This demonstrates that STARLIGHT can be used to obtain the metallicities of GCs.  相似文献

Using multi-band photometric images of M51 and its companion NGC 5195 from ultraviolet to optical and infrared,we investigate spatially resolved stellar population properties of this interacting system with stellar population synthesis models. The observed infrared excess(IRX)is used to constrain dust extinction.Stellar mass is also inferred from the model fitting.By fitting observed spectral energy distributions(SEDs)with synthetical ones,we derive two-dimensional distributions of stellar age, metallicity, dust extinction and stellar mass.In M51,two grand-designed spiral arms extending from the bulge show young age, rich metallicity and abundant dust. The inter-arm regions are filled with older, metalpoorer and less dusty stellar populations.Except for the spiral arm extending from M51 into NGC 5195,the stellar population properties of NGC 5195 are quite featureless.NGC 5195 is much older than M51,and its core is very dusty with AV up to 1.67 mag and dense in stellar mass surface density. The close encounters might drive the dust in the spiral arm of M51 into the center of NGC 5195.  相似文献
