Radio luminosities of pulsars depend on their periods and derivatives of periods. The parameters of these dependences and the independent distances for 288 pulsars are determined. Known dispersion measures are used for determination of the mean electron densities in the direction of pulsars. The results obtained are used for investigation of the large-scale distribution of electron concentration in the galaxy. The maximum value of that distribution is found at a distance of 9 kpc from the galactic center in the Sagittarius arm. We have looked for and found a possible spatial correlation between the present pulsar distribution and the estimated locations of the spiral arms at earlier epochs. Through a detailed statistical analysis we find a significant correlation between the present distribution of pulsars and the mass distribution (in the spiral arms) expected about 60 Myr ago for a corotation resonance radius of 14kpc. We discuss the implications of this correlation for the minimum mass of the progenitors of pulsars. Interpreting the spread in the locations of pulsars with respect to the past locations of the spiral arms as predominantly due to their space velocities, we derive an average velocity for the pulsar population.  相似文献

Data on interstellar diffraction and refraction scintillation of pulsars are analyzed. Comparison between theory and the observational data shows that two types of spectra for electron density fluctuations are realized in the interstellar medium: pure power law and piecewise with a break. The distribution of turbulent plasma in the Galaxy has a three component structure. Component A is diffuse and it is distributed outside of the spiral arms of the Galaxy. Component BI is cloudy and associated with Galactic arms. Component BII is extremely nonuniform and associated with HII regions and supernova remnants. The origin of the interstellar plasma turbulence is considered, and possible sources of turbulent energy are discussed. The contribution of supernova bursts in the interstellar gas ionization and generation of turbulence are analyzed among other factors. The spatial distribution of pulsars and stellar associations in the solar neighborhood is investigated on the basis of recent data. The distribution of young pulsars and stellar associations indicates fragments of the spiral structure of the galaxy. The similar spatial distributions of young pulsars and stellar associations can be considered as confirmation of the hypothesis that pulsars originate in stellar associations. We present the discovery and follow-up observations of 142 pulsars found in the Parkes 20-cm multibeam pulsar survey of the Galactic plane. These new discoveries bring the total number of pulsars found by the survey to 742. In addition to tabulating spin and astrometric parameters, along with pulse width and flux density information, we present orbital characteristics for 13 binary pulsars which form part of the new sample. Combining these results from another recent Parkes multibeam survey at high Galactic latitudes, we have a sample of 1008 normal pulsars which we use to carry out a determination of their Galactic distribution and birth rate. We infer a total Galactic population of  30 000 ± 1100  potentially detectable pulsars (i.e. those beaming towards us) having 1.4-GHz luminosities above 0.1 mJy kpc2. Adopting the Tauris & Manchester beaming model, this translates to a total of  155 000 ± 6000  active radio pulsars in the Galaxy above this luminosity limit. Using a pulsar current analysis, we derive the birth rate of this population to be  1.4 ± 0.2  pulsars per century. An important conclusion from our work is that the inferred radial density function of pulsars depends strongly on the assumed distribution of free electrons in the Galaxy. As a result, any analyses using the most recent electron model of Cordes & Lazio predict a dearth of pulsars in the inner Galaxy. We show that this model can also bias the inferred pulsar scaleheight with respect to the Galactic plane. Combining our results with other Parkes multibeam surveys we find that the population is best described by an exponential distribution with a scaleheight of 330 pc. Surveys underway at Parkes and Arecibo are expected to improve the knowledge of the radial distribution outside the solar circle, and to discover several hundred new pulsars in the inner Galaxy.  相似文献

A method is proposed for constructing a map of the electron density distribution in the galactic plane. Data on the dispersion measures DM of more than 1500 pulsars and their distances, found by an independent method, are used. The independent distances of the pulsars are estimated using an empirical relation of the form LP α β W δ between the radio luminosity L of the pulsars and their periods P, the rate of change . of their periods, and the half width W of their pulses. We analyze the statistical distribution of weakly radiating pulsars, i.e., radio pulsars that have passed to the stage of an orthogonal rotator during the evolution of the inclination angle X. We discuss in detail the factors that lead to a significant reduction in the energy losses for this class of objects. We have determined the number of weakly radiating radio pulsars and their distribution in spin period P. The predictions of a theory based on the model of current losses are shown to be consistent with observational data.  相似文献

The Parkes multibeam pulsar survey is a major survey for pulsars lying within a 10°-wide strip along the southern Galactic plane, using the multibeam receiver on the Parkes 64-m radiotelescope. It is an international collaboration between groups at Jodrell Bank Observatory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Bologna Astronomical Observatory and the ATNF. The survey commenced in 1997 August, and has so far succeeded in finding more than 550 previously unknown pulsars. Many of these are distant, with some beyond the centre of the Galaxy according to current models of the interstellar electron density distribution. Interstellar scattering affects the pulse profile of many of the more distant pulsars even at 1374 MHz, the centre frequency of the survey. Preliminary results from the survey are presented. Thanks to the excellent performance of FAST (Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope), the number of pulsars has increased rapidly. It is very important to analyze the physical parameters of known pulsars. The overall properties of pulsars are studied by analyzing the related physical parameters such as spatial position, period, surface magnetic flux density and so on. A large number of pulsars were detected by FAST near the galactic disk, which reflect the superiority of its detection ability. The diagram of the relationship between the period and the time derivative of period of pulsars has been updated. At present, 57 pulsars have crossed the classical “death line”, and five were discovered by FAST. Finally, the physical parameters of the binary pulsar systems are statistically analyzed, the binary pulsar systems are evolving towards the direction of low eccentricity and the decrease mass of the companion star. Moreover, 9 are located above the “spin-up line”. FAST is making China into the golden age of pulsar discovery, which will further promote the rapid development of pulsar physics.  相似文献

相控阵馈源(Phased array feeds, PAFs)接收机作为下一代微波接收机,为大口径射电天文望远镜的射电干扰(Radio Frequency Interference, RFI)缓解工作带来了新的解决方法. PAFs接收机对射电望远镜焦平面的电磁波进行空域采样,返回时域阵列信号,使用最小方差无失真响应(Minimum Variance Distortionless Response, MVDR)波束合成器可以自适应地识别RFI的方向,同时抑制RFI在输出信号中的功率,从而达到提升射电望远镜灵敏度的效果.仿真结果表明MVDR波束合成器对有源高能量的射电干扰有很强的识别能力和一定程度的缓解能力,同时,该波束合成器对各阵元信道中加性噪声累积引起的无源干扰有很强的抑制能力,因此, PAFs接收机的MVDR波束合成器可以增强日益复杂电磁波环境下射电望远镜的抗干扰能力.  相似文献

We study the statistical distribution of extinct radio pulsars at the stage of an ejector. An important element that distinguishes our study from other works is a consistent allowance for the evolution of the angle of inclination of the magnetic axis to the spin axis. We determined the distribution of extinct radio pulsars in spin period for two models: the model with hindered particle escape from the neutron-star surface and the model with free particle escape. The total number of extinct radio pulsars is shown to be much smaller than that in the model in which the evolution of the angle of axial inclination is disregarded. This is because when the evolution of the angle of axial inclination is taken into account, the transition to the stage of a propeller occurs at much shorter neutron-star spin periods (P ~ 5–10 s) than assumed previously.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of pulsars in the solar neighborhood is investigated on the basis of the recent catalog of Taylor, Manchester, and Lyne. It is shown that “old” pulsars with an age τ > 2.106 yr, like “young ” ones, are indicators of fragments of the Galaxy’s spiral structure. It is concluded that if the distance scale adopted in the catalog is accurate, the peculiar velocities of the pulsars with the most accurate distances must be far lower than those adopted up to now. We have measured 21-cm absorption and emission spectra in the direction of a further seven southern pulsars with the Parkes telescope to derive their kinematic distances and to study the interstellar medium. For the first time we have successfully obtained H  i absorption measurements for PSRs J1602–5100, J1740–3015 and J1745–3040. We have also significantly improved the sensitivity and resolution on PSRs J1600–5044, J1752–2806 and J1825–0935, the spectra of which have previously been measured, and have corrected an error in the published distance to PSR J1824–1945.
Since the Frail & Weisberg summary of pulsar distances in 1990, a further 23 pulsars now have measured H  i distances, mainly through the efforts of the current group. We discuss the Taylor & Cordes electron density model in light of these new measurements and find that, although the model towards the Galactic Centre appears good, the line of sight through the Carina spiral arm is poorly fitted by the model.  相似文献

A statistical study of 233 pulsar proper motions   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We present and analyse a catalogue of 233 pulsars with proper motion measurements. The sample contains a wide variety of pulsars including recycled objects and those associated with globular clusters or supernova remnants. After taking the most precise proper motions for those pulsars for which multiple measurements are available, the majority of the proper motions (58 per cent) are derived from pulsar timing methods, 41 per cent using interferometers and the remaining 1 per cent using optical telescopes. Many of the one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) speeds (referring to speeds measured in one coordinate only and the magnitudes of the transverse velocities, respectively) derived from these measurements are somewhat lower than earlier estimates because of the use of the most recent electron density model in determining pulsar distances. The mean 1D speeds for the normal and recycled pulsars are 152(10) and 54(6) km s−1, respectively. The corresponding mean 2D speeds are 246(22) and 87(13) km s−1. PSRs B2011+38 and B2224+64 have the highest inferred 2D speeds of  ∼1600 km s−1  . We study the mean speeds for different subsamples and find that, in general, they agree with previous results. Applying a novel deconvolution technique to the sample of 73 pulsars with characteristic ages less than 3 Myr, we find the mean three-dimensional (3D) pulsar birth velocity to be 400(40) km s−1. The distribution of velocities is well described by a Maxwellian distribution with  1D rms σ= 265 km s−1  . There is no evidence for a bimodal velocity distribution. The proper motions for PSRs B1830−08 and B2334+61 are consistent with their proposed associations with the supernova remnants W41 and G114.3+0.3, respectively.  相似文献

The rotation periods, surface magnetic field strengths, as well as the spatial distribution of the several kinds of pulsars discovered sofar are analyzed statistically. It is revealed that the spatial distribution of the millisecond pulsars is more dispersive than that of the normal radio pulsars. And that the spatial distribution of the pulsars in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) is also more dispersive than that of the pulsars in high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs). The distribution of rotation periods of the isolated millisecond pulsars has a peak at 4.7ms, and the corresponding peak values for the normal radio pulsars and the millisecond pulsars in binaries are 0.6 s and 3.5ms, respectively. The surface magnetic field strengths of the FERMI pulsars (the gamma-ray pulsars observed by the Large Area Telescope/Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope) and normal pulsars are all concentrated around 1012 Gs. It is found also that some young high-energy pulsars are associated with supernova remnants. In combination with the formation and evolution models of pulsars, we have made some remarks on the characteristics of these distributions.  相似文献

It is proposed that pulsars are mode-locked masers rather than rotating neutron stars. The maser cavity resides at the metallic-molecular interface near the surface of ordinary cold degenerate dwarf configurations. The period distribution, including its position, width, and features, is found in good agreement with that of pulsars. Furthermore, the pulse profile morphology of pulsars and modelocked lasers are found to be strikingly similar. Explanations are given for various other features, such as slowing down and optical pulses, and a possible connection with jovian decametric radiation is suggested. The main shortcoming of the maser theory is that no source of energy is obvious as yet.On leave from the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.  相似文献
