Depth profiles in the sediment porewaters of the Chattahoochee River (Georgia, USA) show that iron oxides scavenge arsenate in the water column and settle to the sediment-water interface (SWI) where they are reduced by iron-reducing bacteria. During their reduction, these particles seem to release arsenic to the porewaters in the form of arsenate only. Sediment slurry incubations were conducted to determine the effect of low concentrations of arsenic (?10 μM) on biogeochemical processes in these sediments. Experiments confirm that any arsenate (As(V)) added to these sediments is immediately adsorbed in oxic conditions and released in anoxic conditions during the microbial reduction of authigenic iron oxides. Incubations in the presence of ?1 μM As(V) reveal that arsenate is released but not concomitantly reduced during this process. Simultaneously, microbial iron reduction is enhanced significantly, spurring the simultaneous release of arsenate into porewaters and secondary formation of crystalline iron oxides. Above 1 μM As(V), however, the microbial reductive dissolution of iron oxides appears inhibited by arsenate, and arsenite is produced in excess in the porewaters. These incubations show that even low inputs of arsenic to riverine sediments may affect microbial processes, the stability of iron oxides and, indirectly, the cycling of arsenic. Possible mechanisms for such effects on iron reduction are proposed.

We measured the vertical distributions of Mo, Fe, Mn, sulfide, sulfate, organic carbon, major ions, and pH in sediment porewater from one perennially oxic and three seasonally anoxic lacustrine basins in Eastern Canada, as well as those of Mo, acid volatile sulfide, Fe, Mn, Al, organic C, 210Pb and 137Cs in sediment cores from the same sites. The only input of anthropogenic Mo to these lakes comes from atmospheric deposition. The relatively monotonous distribution of Mo in the porewater of three seasonally anoxic basins suggests that Mo is not redistributed in the sedimentary column during periods of anoxia. In contrast, porewater Mo profiles obtained at three sampling dates in a perennially oxic basin display sharp Mo peaks below the sediment-water interface, indicating redistribution subsequent to deposition. Modeling of these latter porewater Mo profiles with a diagenetic reaction-transport equation coupled to comparisons among the various porewater and solid phase profiles reveal that Mo is released at 1-2 cm depth as a consequence of the reductive dissolution of Fe oxyhydroxides and scavenged both at the vicinity of the sediment-water interface, by re-adsorption onto authigenic Fe oxyhydroxides, and deeper in the sediments where dissolved sulfide concentrations are higher. The estimated rate constant for the adsorption of Mo onto Fe oxyhydroxides is 36 ± 45 cm3 mol−1 s−1.Diagenetic modeling indicates that authigenic Mo in sediments of the perennially oxic basin represents about one-third of the total solid phase Mo in the first cm below the sediment-water interface and only one tenth below this horizon. If we assume that no authigenic Mo is accumulated in the seasonally anoxic lake sediments we conclude that the sediment Mo concentrations, which are up to 3-16 times higher than the average lithogenic composition, depending on the lake, are mainly due to atmospheric deposition of anthropogenic Mo and not to the formation of authigenic Mo phases. Reconstructed historical records of the atmospheric Mo deposition indicate maximum values in the 1970s and 1980s and significant decreases since then. Emissions to the atmosphere associated with the smelting of non-ferrous ores and coal combustion appear to be the most important sources of anthropogenic Mo.

Thallium diagenesis in lacustrine sediments
Dated sediment cores and porewaters from two Canadian Shield lakes, located 40 km from Québec City (L. Tantaré) and 25 km downwind from an important smelter in northwestern Québec (L. Vose), were analyzed for thallium and other geochemical variables. Atmospheric deposition is the only source of anthropogenic Tl to these lakes. The porewater Tl concentration profiles in L. Tantaré display a peak below the sediment-water interface that suggests post-depositional Tl remobilization and transport to the overlying water and deeper sediments; such a dissolved Tl peak occurs just above the sediment-water interface in L. Vose. Modeling the porewater Tl profiles with a diagenetic reaction-transport equation reveals a zone of dissolved Tl production lying above a zone of Tl consumption in L. Tantaré sediments. In contrast, in L. Vose, Tl diffuses across the sediment-water interface from the anoxic hypolimnion and is fixed to the surficial sediments. The localization of the consumption zones, the shape of the dissolved Tl, sulfide and iron profiles, as well as calculations of saturation states are all consistent with the removal of Tl from porewater by co-precipitation with and/or adsorption to Fe sulfides. The concentrations of Tl removed from or added to sediments after their deposition (i.e., diagenetic Tl) amount to up to 36% of measured sediment Tl concentrations. Comparison of the reconstructed historical Tl records with those of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and of Pb originating from coal burning or from smelting activities indicate that coal combustion is the major source of atmospheric Tl to L. Tantaré and that an additional important Tl source to L. Vose is the nearby smelter.

Uranium geochemistry has been investigated in three acid lakes located on the Canadian Shield and one circumneutral lake in the Appalachian Region of Eastern Canada. In all Shield lakes, dissolved U concentrations were higher in the porewater than in the overlying water. In one of them, whose hypolimnion is perennially oxic, U released to porewater at depths of Fe remobilization was removed from the porewater at depths of Fe oxyhydroxides precipitation; these similarities in the U and Fe profiles indicate that part of the U becomes associated to Fe oxyhydroxides. The dissolved U and Fe profiles in the other two Shield lakes, whose hypolimnions were anoxic when sampled, did not show any significant recycling of these elements in the vicinity of the sediment-water interface and both elements diffused from the sediment to the overlying water. In contrast, in the Appalachian Lake, dissolved U concentrations were higher in the overlying water than in porewater, strongly decreased at the vicinity of the sediment-water interface and then remained relatively constant with sediment depth. Diagenetic modeling of the porewater U profiles, assuming steady-state, reveals that authigenic U always represented ?3% of the total U concentration in the sediments of all lakes. This observation indicates that diagenetic reactions involving U are not quantitatively important and that most of the U was delivered to the sediments at our study sites as particulate U and not through diffusion across the sediment-water interface, as is seen in continental margin sediments. Comparison of the U:Corg and U:Fe molar ratios in diagenetic material collected across the sediment-water interface with Teflon sheets and in surface sediments (0-0.5 cm) of the lake having a perennially oxic hypolimnion suggest that solid phase U was mainly bound to organic matter originating from the watershed; a strong statistical correlation between sediment non-lithogenic U and Corg in the Appalachian Lake supports this contention. Thermodynamic calculations of saturation states suggest that dissolved U was not removed from porewater through precipitation of UO2(s), U3O7(s) and U3O8(s) as previously proposed in the literature.

This research tests the hypothesis that trace metals respond to the extent of reducing conditions in a predictable way. We describe pore water and sediment measurements of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), vanadium (V), uranium (U), rhenium (Re), and molybdenum (Mo) along a transect off Washington State (USA). Sediments become less reducing away from the continent, and the stations have a range of oxygen penetration depths (depth to unmeasurable O2 concentration) varying from a few millimeters to five centimeters. When oxygen penetrates ∼1 cm or less, Fe is reduced in the pore waters but reoxidized near the sediment-water interface, preventing a flux of Fe2+ to overlying waters, whereas Mn oxides are reduced and Mn2+ diffuses to overlying waters. Both Re and U authigenically accumulate in sediments. Only at the most reducing location, where the oxygen penetrates 0.3 cm below the sediment-water interface, does the surface 30 cm of sediments become reducing enough to authigenically accumulate Mo.Stations in close proximity to the Juan de Fuca Ridge crest are enriched in Mn and Fe from hydrothermal plume processes. Both V and Mo clearly associate with Mn cycling, whereas U may be associating with either Mn oxides and/or Fe oxyhydroxides. Rhenium is uncomplicated by adsorption to Mn oxides and/or Fe oxyhydroxides, and Re accumulation in sediments appears to be due solely to the extent of reducing conditions. Therefore, authigenic sediment Re enrichment appears to be the best indicator for intermediate reducing conditions, where oxygen penetrates less than ∼1 cm below the sediment-water interface, when coupled with negligible authigenic Mo enrichment.

The vertical distribution and concentrations of Fe, Mn, and As were measured in porewaters and sediments recovered with box-cores taken each year since the 1996 flood along the main axis of the Saguenay Fjord and in the Baie des Ha! Ha!. Time-series analyses reveal that Mn remobilization was not significantly affected by the accumulation of the flood deposit. Authigenic Mn oxi-hydroxides present at the original sediment–water interface and in the flood material were progressively reduced, and much of the Mn(II) diffused to the current interface, where it was oxidized and precipitated. First-order rate constants for the reduction and precipitation of the authigenic Mn oxi-hydroxides were estimated by fitting the time-series data to a diagenetic model. On the basis of these rate constants and given that the maximum reactive solid Mn remains concentrated in the thin, oxic layer near the sediment-water interface, an upper limit to the biodiffusion coefficient, DB, was also evaluated. In contrast to Mn, Fe associated with the authigenic oxi-hydroxides at the original interface was mostly trapped as acid volatile sulfides (i.e., AVS) under the SO4-reducing conditions established rapidly after the flood. Most of the As associated with the authigenic oxi-hydroxides at the original (buried) interface also appears to be trapped with the authigenic sulfides, thus limiting its diffusion through the flood deposit.

We investigated the phosphorus (P) and iron (Fe) fractionation in four cores with anoxic sediments, deposited during the mid-Cretaceous oceanic anoxic event 2 (∼94 Ma) and the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (∼55 Ma), that were exposed to oxygen after core recovery. Surprisingly, P associated with iron oxyhydroxides (Fe-bound P) was a major P phase in these laminated sediments deposited under euxinic conditions. A significant fraction of total Fe was present as (poorly) crystalline ferric Fe. This fraction increased with increasing storage time of the investigated cores. In carbonate-poor samples, Fe-bound P accounted for up to 99% of total P and its abundance correlated with pyrite contents. In samples with higher CaCO3 contents (>5 wt% in the investigated samples), P was mostly present in authigenic Ca-P minerals, irrespective of pyrite contents. We conclude that the P fractionation in anoxic, carbonate-poor, sediments is strongly affected by pyrite oxidation that occurs when these sediments are exposed to oxygen. Pyrite oxidation produces sulfuric acid and iron oxyhydroxides. The abundance of poorly crystalline Fe oxyhydroxides provides further evidence that these were indeed formed through recent (post-recovery) oxidation rather than in situ tens of millions of years ago. The acid dissolves apatite and the released phosphate is subsequently bound in the freshly formed iron oxyhydroxides. Pyrite oxidation thus leads to a conversion of authigenic Ca-P to Fe-bound P. In more calcareous samples, CaCO3 can act as an effective buffer against acidic dissolution of Ca-P minerals. The results indicate that shielding of sediments from atmospheric oxygen is vital to preserve the in situ P fractionation and to enable a valid reconstruction of marine phosphorus cycling based on sediment records.

The speciation and mobility of some selected trace metals (As, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn) in sediments with depth was investigated in the Cam River-mouth (Vietnam) by collecting sediment cores and analysing porewater and sediment composition, complemented with single (ammonium-EDTA) and sequential (BCR 3-step) extractions and mineralogical analysis (XRD). All trace metals show overall decreasing trends with depth in porewater as a result of anthropogenic input in upper sediment layers. High porewater concentrations of As, Mn and Pb in oxic and suboxic sediment layers may result in groundwater pollution. Sediment-bound Pb and Mn dominate in the reducible and the acid-soluble fraction, respectively, while Cu and Zn distribute rather evenly between four extracted fractions. The porewater metal speciation, as predicted by a geochemical model Visual MINTEQ version 3.0, indicates that the toxicity of Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn (presented by the proportions of free metal ions) decreases with depth, while the toxicity of As increases when As(III) becomes more abundant. The dissolved concentrations of trace metals are not only controlled by the precipitation/dissolution of discrete hydroxide/oxide, carbonate and phosphate minerals, but also by sorption processes on major sorbents (i.e. As on goethite, and Mn and Zn on calcite and dolomite). Sulphide minerals do not show any control even in the anoxic zone most likely because of the low concentration of sulphur.

Understanding the mechanism of arsenic mobilization from sediments to groundwater is important for water quality management in areas of endemic arsenic poisoning, such as the Hetao Basin in Inner Mongolia, northern China. Aquifer geochemistry was characterized at three field sites (SH, HF, TYS) in Hangjinhouqi County of northwestern Hetao Basin. The results of bulk geochemistry analysis of sediment samples indicated that total As concentrations have a range of 6.8–58.5 mg/kg, with a median of 14.4 mg/kg. The highest As concentrations were found at 15–25 m depth. In the meanwhile, the range of As concentration in the sediments from background borehole is 3–21.8 mg/kg, with a median value of 9 mg/kg. The As sediments concentrations with depth from the SH borehole were correlated with the contents of Fe, Sb, B, V, total C and total S. Generally, the abundance of elements varied with grain size, with higher concentrations in finer fractions of the sediments. Distinct lithology profile and different geochemical characteristics of aquifer sediments indicate the sediments are associated with different sources and diverse sedimentary environments. Up to one third of arsenic in the sediments could be extracted by ammonium oxalate, suggesting that Fe oxyhydroxides may be the major sink of As in the aquifer. Sequential extraction results indicate that arsenic occurs as strongly adsorbed on and/or co-precipitated with amorphous Fe oxyhydroxides in sediments accounting for 35 and 20%, respectively, of the total contents of arsenic. The release of As into groundwater may occur by desorption from the mineral surface driven by reductive dissolution of the Fe oxide minerals. Furthermore, small proportions of As associated with iron sulfides occur in the reductive sediments.

We report solid phase sulfur speciation of six cores from sediments underlying oxic, suboxic and anoxic-sulfidic waters of the Black Sea. Our dataset includes the five sulfur species [pyrite-sulfur, acid volatile sulfides (AVS), zerovalent sulfur (S(0)), organic polysulfides (RSx), humic sulfur] together with reactive iron and manganese, as quantified by dithionite extraction, and total organic carbon. Pyrite – sulfur was the major phase in all cores [200-400 µmol (g dry wt)- 1] except for the suboxic core. However, zerovalent sulfur and humic sulfur also reached very significant levels: up to about 109 and 80 µmol (g dry wt)- 1, respectively. Humic sulfur enrichment was observed in the surface fluff layers of the eastern central basin sediments where Unit-1 type depositional conditions prevail. Elemental sulfur accumulated as a result of porewater sulfide oxidation by reactive iron oxides in turbidities from the anoxic basin margin and western central basin sediments. The accumulation of elemental sulfur to a level close to that of pyrite-S in any part of central Black Sea sediments has never been reported before and our finding indicates deep basin turbidites prevent the build-up of dissolved sulfide in the sediment. This process also contributes to diagenetic pyrite formation whereas in the non-turbiditic parts of the deep basin water column formed (syngenetic) pyrite dominates the sulfur inventory. In slope sediments under suboxic waters, organic sulfur (humic sulfur + organic polysulfides) account for 33-42% of total solid phase S, indicating that the suboxic conditions favor organosulfur formation. Our study shows that the interactions between depositional patterns (Unit 1 vs. turbidite), redox state of overlying waters (oxic-suboxic-sulfidic) and organic matter content determine sulfur speciation and enable the accumulation of elemental sulfur and organic sulfur species close to a level of pyrite-S.

Sediments sampled at a hydrocarbon-contaminated, glacial-outwash, sandy aquifer near Bemidji, Minnesota, were analyzed for sediment-associated Fe with several techniques. Extraction with 0.5 M HCl dissolved poorly crystalline Fe oxides and small amounts of Fe in crystalline Fe oxides, and extracted Fe from phyllosilicates. Use of Ti-citrate-EDTA-bicarbonate results in more complete removal of crystalline Fe oxides. The average HCl-extractable Fe(III) concentration in the sediments closest to the crude-oil contamination (16.2 μmol/g) has been reduced by up to 30% from background values (23.8 μmol/g) as a result of Fe(III) reduction in contaminated anoxic groundwater. Iron(II) concentrations are elevated in sediments within an anoxic plume in the aquifer. Iron(II) values under the oil body (19.2 μmol/g) are as much as 4 times those in the background sediments (4.6 μmol/g), indicating incorporation of reduced Fe in the contaminated sediments. A 70% increase in total extractable Fe at the anoxic/oxic transition zone indicates reoxidation and precipitation of Fe mobilized from sediment in the anoxic plume. Scanning electron microscopy detected authigenic ferroan calcite in the anoxic sediments and confirmed abundant Fe(III) oxyhydroxides at the anoxic/oxic boundary. The redox biogeochemistry of Fe in this system is coupled to contaminant degradation and is important in predicting processes of hydrocarbon degradation.

The concentrations of Re, as well as those of several other geochemical variables, were measured in dated sediment cores and in porewater samples from four lacustrine basins in Eastern Canada: one, perennially oxic, located 40 km from Québec City and three, seasonally anoxic, located within 25 km of non-ferrous metal smelters. The drainage basins of these lakes are uninhabited and have not been affected by human activity or wildfires. All of the depth profiles of dissolved Re indicate: higher Re concentrations in the water overlying the sediment than in the porewater; diffusion of Re across the sediment-water interface; a progressive decrease in porewater Re concentrations to reach minimum values of ∼0.5 pM within a 10-cm sediment depth interval. Modeling of these Re porewater profiles with a one-dimensional transport-reaction equation indicates that Re is removed from porewater within this depth interval. Based on thermodynamic predictions of Re speciation and of saturation states and on comparison of these predictions with sulfide porewater profiles, we infer that Re is removed from porewater by precipitation of rheniite (ReS2(s)). The rate constant for the formation of ReS2(s) in sediments is estimated from the modeling exercise to be 0.51 ± 0.64 × 10−21 mol cm−3 s−1. Accumulation of sedimentary Re shows a strong authigenic component, as in anoxic marine sediments. Sharp increases in solid-phase Re during the last century are attributed to atmospheric deposition of anthropogenic Re deriving from coal burning and nearby smelter emissions.

Arsenic species including arsenite, arsenate, and organic arsenic were measured in the porewaters collected from Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake of China. The vertical distributions of dissolved arsenic species and some diagenetic constituents [Fe(II), Mn(II), S(−II)] were also obtained in the same porewater samples in summer and winter. In sediments the concentration profiles of total As and As species bound to Fe–Mn oxyhydroxides and to organic matter were also determined along with the concentrations of Fe, Mn and S in different extractable fractions. Results indicate that, in the summer season, the concentrations of total dissolved As varying from 3.9 to 55.8 μg/L in sediments were higher than those (5.3–15.7 μg/L) measured in the winter season, while the concentrations of total As species in the solid phase varied between 10.97 and 25.32 mg/kg and between 7.84 and 30.52 mg/kg on a dry weight basis in summer and winter, respectively. Seasonal profiles of dissolved As suggest downward and upward diffusion, and the flux of dissolved As across the sediment–water interface (SWI) in summer and winter were estimated at 3.88 mg/m2 a and 0.79 mg/m2 a, respectively. Based on porewater profiles and sediment phase data, the main geochemical behavior of As was controlled by adsorption/desorption, precipitation and molecular diffusion. The solubility and migration of inorganic As are controlled by Fe–Mn oxyhydroxides in summer whereas they appear to be more likely controlled by both amorphous Fe–Mn oxyhydroxides and sulfides in winter. A better knowledge of the cycle of As in Poyang Lake is essential to a better management of its hydrology and for the environmental protection of biota in the lake.

Samples of authigenic material, sediment overlying water and oxic surface sediment (0–0.5-cm depth) from a perennially oxygenated lacustrine basin were analysed to investigate which solid phases are important for binding a suite of trace elements (Ag, As, Ca, Cd, Cu, Hg, In, methylmercury (MeHg), Mg, Mo, Pb, Sb and Zn). The authigenic material, which was collected with inert Teflon sheets deployed for several years across the sediment–water interface, contained mainly poorly crystallized Fe oxyhydroxides and natural organic matter, presumably humic substances derived from the watershed. Manganese oxyhydroxides were not present in the collected authigenic material due to the slightly acidic condition (pH = 5.6) of the lake that prevents the formation and recycling of these compounds. Conditional equilibrium constants for the adsorption of cationic (KFe–M) and anionic (KFe–A) trace elements onto the authigenic Fe oxyhydroxides were estimated from their concentrations in the authigenic material and in bottom water samples. These field-derived values of KFe–M and KFe–A were compared with those predicted by the surface complexation model, using laboratory-derived intrinsic adsorption constants and the water composition at the study site. Equilibrium constants (KPOM–M) were also calculated for the adsorption of the cationic trace elements onto the humic substances contained in the diagenetic material. The field-derived values of KPOM–M were compared to those predicted by the speciation code WHAM 6 for the complexation of the trace elements by dissolved humic substances in the lake. Combining the results of the present study with those on the distributions of trace elements in the porewater and solid-phase sediments reported in previous studies at the same site, it was determined whether the trace elements bind preferentially to Fe oxyhydroxides or natural organic matter in oxic sediments. The main inferences are that the anionic trace elements As, Mo and Sb, as well as the cationic metal Pb are preferentially bound to the authigenic Fe oxyhydroxides whereas the other trace elements, and especially Hg and MeHg, are preferentially bound to the humic substances.

The arsenic accumulation process in intertidal sediments of Iriomote Island, Japan, is analyzed as a naturally balanced arsenic-fixation system. Major and minor element chemistry is analyzed by X-ray fluorescence photometry, mineralogy is investigated by X-ray diffractometry, and four arsenic compounds are characterized by hydrogen-generated atomic absorption photometry. It is found that arsenic is accumulated by iron hydroxides/oxides precipitated following the decomposition of humic acids in the shallower sediment, and is subsequently incorporated into iron sulfide minerals at depth. The arsenic is immobile during incorporation into arsenic-bearing phases, suggesting that arsenic is unlikely to be released into the porewater under natural conditions in early diagenesis. The formation and decomposition of arsenic-bearing organic compounds appear to be associated with the formation and decomposition of arsenic in oxyhydroxides/oxides, suggesting that microbial activity may play an important role in controlling the behavior of arsenic and arsenic-bearing phases in the sediment column.

Voltammetric methods using direct insertion of a gold-amalgam microelectrode with a sensitive, computercontrolled voltammeter detected soluble iron(II) sulfide, [FeS]aq, in the porewaters of anoxic, sulfidic, fine-grained sediments from the Loughor Estuary, Wales. The voltammetric results are reproducible. Studies of cores stored in sealed, refrigerated containers for up to 21 d reveal no measurable oxidation. [FeS]aq forms in this estuarine environment as a result of the dissolution of amorphous FeS, and appears to be involved in the formation of pyrite. [FeS]aq makes no significant contribution to the total sulfide and iron contents of the sediment but could constitute an important component of the dissolved Fe(II) and S(−II) contents of the porewater. Mass balance calculations show pyrite forms in this system by the addition of sulfur to FeS rather than by the loss of iron from FeS. The overall process appears to involve [FeS]aq as an intermediary. Although the porewaters of the Loughor Estuary sediments are iron-rich relative to seawater, the iron sulfide-forming process is iron-limited rather than sulfide-limited. Reactive iron is bound to sulfide rapidly in the sediment. After the reactive iron is bound to sulfide, additional sulfide produced is fixed as pyrite.

Iodometric titration of deep sea sediment from cores at MANOP sites M and H indicate a particulate Mn oxidation state between 3.3 and 3.9 in the top 5 cm. Results from site H show a minimum in the Mn oxidation state at 1.5 cm depth indicating Mn reduction is occurring above the zone of pore water Mn oxidation. Using a simple box model, the rate of reduction is calculated to be 19 mg/cm2 kyr ? 77 mg/cm2 kyr, at least 5 times the flux of Mn to nodules in this region. Although no Mn oxidation state minimum is observed in site M sediments, oxic reduction is inferred from a particulate mass balance, indicating that a large fraction of the Mn rain to this site is not preserved in the sediments and must be remobilized. We suggest that the process of reduction in oxic or suboxic environments near the sediment-water interface may be an important mechanism controlling the concentration of Mn in sediments and provides a mechanism for supplying diagenetic Mn to the nodules at site H.
