We classified five new ordinary chondrites from North West Africa. NWA 3010 is an L6(S5), NWA 3011 is an L5(S5), NWA 3012 is an LL4(S5), NWA 3013 is an L5(S5), and NWA 3014 is an H4(S1). The meteorites experienced a range of terrestrial alteration, with NWA 3010 equal to weathering grade W2, NWA 3011 equal to W3, NWA 3012 equal to W3, NWA 3013 equal to W2, and NWA 3014 equal to W4.  相似文献

The Plainview. Texas, meteorite is a polymict-brecciated H-group chondrite composed of recrystallized light-colored portions embedded in a well-compacted, dense, somewhat recrystallized, dark-colored matrix. Both portions consist of equilibrated silicates (H5 classification), but a small number of silicate grains and unequilibrated lithic fragments not compatible with equilibrated ordinary H-group material are present in the dark-colored matrix. Lithic fragments include: (i) dark-colored, more or less altered, type II carbonaceous chondrites. (ii) unequilibrated ordinary chondrites and (iii) light-colored, unequilibrated and equilibrated fragments, some of which are compositionally similar to the host. Also present are fragment-like dark areas that are highly-shocked host material and not true lithic fragments (pseudo-fragments). Conclusions: Plainview represents a complex regolith breccia formed by repeated impact episodes. Recrystallized, light-colored portions represent surface or near-surface material of a small (asteroidal-sized) parent body. Impacts broke up this material to form fine-grained, dark material which enclosed light-colored protolith. Lithic fragments (i-iii) and some unequilibrated silicate grains and chondrules (apparently derived from unequilibrated chondrites) were embedded in the dark matrix during these repeated impacts. Xenolitlils of carbonaceous and unequilibrated ordinary chondrites are either residues of projectiles that impacted the Plainview parent body, or material from coexisting regoliths impact-splashed into Plainview regolith. Chondrules and silicate grains in the dark matrix which differ from H-group material are likely related to these xenoliths and their regoliths. Light-colored lithic fragments may represent shock-melted chondritic material, sometimes compositionally-modified, or new, achondritic meteoritic types. Unequilibrated and carbonaceous lithic fragments in the dark-colored host matrix indicate that equilibration of the host occurred before incorporation of the fragments and that compaction and lithification of the Plainview regolith to form a coherent meteorite must have occurred at temperatures below 300°C and/or on a short time scale.  相似文献

Northwest Africa (NWA) 12379 is a new metal-rich chondrite with unique characteristics distinguishing it from all previously described meteorites. It contains high Fe,Ni-metal content (∼ 70 vol.%) and completely lacks interchondrule matrix; these characteristics are typical only for metal-rich carbonaceous (CH and CB) and G chondrites. However, chondrule sizes (60 to 1200 μm; mean = 370 μm), their predominantly porphyritic textures, nearly equilibrated chemical compositions of chondrule olivines (Fa18.1–28.3, average Fa24.9±3.2, PMD = 12.8; Cr2O3 = 0.03 ± 0.02 wt.%; FeO/MnO = 53.2 ± 6.5 (wt.-ratio); n = 28), less equilibrated compositions of low-Ca pyroxenes (Fs3.2–18.7Wo0.2–4.5; average Fs14.7±3.7Wo1.4±1.3; n = 20), oxygen-isotope compositions of chondrule olivine phenocrysts (Δ17O ∼ 0.2–1.4‰, average ∼ 0.8‰), and the presence of coarse-grained Ti-bearing chromite, Cl-apatite, and merrillite, all indicate affinity of NWA 12379 to unequilibrated (type 3.8) ordinary chondrites (OCs). Like most OCs, NWA 12379 experienced fluid-assisted thermal metamorphism that resulted in formation of secondary ferroan olivine (Fa27) that replaces low-Ca pyroxene grains in chondrules and in inclusions in Fe,Ni-metal grains. Δ17O of the ferroan olivine (∼ 4‰) is similar to those of aqueously-formed fayalite in type 3 OCs, but its δ18O is significantly higher (15–19‰, average = 17‰ vs. 3―12‰, average = 8‰, respectively). We suggest classifying NWA 12379 as the ungrouped metal-rich chondrite with affinities of its non-metal fraction to unequilibrated OCs and speculate that it may have formed by a collision between an OC-like body and a metal-rich body and subsequently experienced fluid-assisted thermal metamorphism. Trace siderophile element abundances and isotopic compositions (e.g., Mo, Ni, Fe) of the NWA 12379 metal could help to constrain its origin.  相似文献

EMP determinations of Fe, Co and Ni in the metal phases of ordinary chondrites confirm the report of Sears and Axon that kamacite Co contents show restricted, nonoverlapping ranges in the three groups; ranges are 3.3–4.8 mg/g in H, 6.7–8.2 mg/g in L and 15–110 mg/g in LL. Experimental data by Widge and Goldstein show that the Ni concentration of the α(α + γ) boundary increases with increasing Co concentration: unexpectedly, we find lower kamacite Ni concentrations in unequilibrated LL chondrites (44–55 mg/g) than in H and L chondrites (57–69 mg/g). We infer that, at temperatures below 550° C increasing Co causes a decrease in the equilibrium kamacite Ni concentration of an α-γ system. Although some evidence indicates that the equilibrated L chondrites Barratta, Knyahinya and Shaw have siderophile concentrations lower than the normal L-group range, they have kamacite and taenite Co concentrations in the L-group range.Metal-phase studies of petrologic type-3 ordinary chondrites having highly unequilibrated silicates showed a wide range in the degree of matrix kamacite equilibration ranging from nearly equilibrated in Mezö-Madaras to highly unequilibrated in Bishunpur, Ngawi and Semarkona. Kamacite in chondrule interiors is highly unequilibrated in all 9 chondrites, and in each setting taenite data are consistent with the expectation that it should be less equilibrated than kamacite. Our kamacite Co data confirm that Sharps is H and Hallingeberg. Khohar and Mezö-Madaras are L chondrites. Chainpur and Parnallee have kamacite Co concentrations between the L and LL ranges: we present evidence indicating that they are truly intermediate, i.e. neither L nor LL. Highly unequilibrated Ngawi is either LL or, less likely, still more oxidized. Bishunpur and Semarkona have mean kamacite Co concentrations in the H range but too unequilibrated to be used for classification. The highly heterogeneous compositions of the metal in Bishunpur, Ngawi and Semarkona indicate that their metal partially preserves properties established during nebular processes. Most of the taenite in these chondrites has high Ni contents (>470 mg/g) and is essentially unzoned; much of the kamacite is polycrystalline with crystals ?5μm across. Metamorphism causes tiny grains to disappear, increases the grain size of both kamacite and taenite, tends to equilibrate metallic minerals and, during cooling, can produce zoned taenite.A petrologic type-5 clast in the Ngawi LL3 chondrite has 3 coexisting metal phases, clear taenite (540 mg/g Ni, 21 mg/g Co), kamacite (30 mg/g Ni, 120 mg/g Co) and a phase tentatively identified as ordered FeCo (8.5 mg/g Ni, 370 mg/g Co).  相似文献

Petrography and mineral chemistry of 24 ordinary chondrites from the Grove Mountains, Antarctica, have been studied in order to identify their chemical-petrographic types. These samples were selected from a total of 4448 Grove Mountains (GRV) meteorites collected during the 19th Chinese Antarctic Research Expedition so as to make an estimation of the large GRV meteorite collection. The chemical-petrographic types of these meteorites are presented below: 1 H3,2 H4, 4 H5, 2 H6, 1 L4, 7 L5, 5 L6, 1 LL4 and 1 LL6. The new data weaken the previous report that unequilibrated ordinary chondrites are unusually abundant in the Grove Mountains region. However, this work confirms significant differences in distribution patterns of chemical-petrographic types between the Grove Mountains and other  相似文献

A neutron activation analysis technique was used to determine Au, Re, Co, Mo, As, Sb, Ga, Se, Te, Hg, Zn, Bi and Tl in 11 carbonaceous chondrites, 12 unequilibrated ordinary chondrites (UOC), and 4 equilibrated ordinary chondrites. The first 6 elements are ‘undepleted’, the next 3 ‘normally-depleted’ and the last 4 ‘strongly-depleted’. Except for Hg, ‘depleted-element’ abundances in carbonaceous chondrites lead to mean relative ratios of C1:C2:C3 = 1.00:0.53:0.29, i.e. those predicted by a two-component (mixing of high-temperature and low-temperature fractions) model. The last 4 nominally ‘undepleted’ elements are somewhat depleted in ordinary chondrites, As and Sb showing partial depletion in C3 and the latter in C2 chondrites as well. This requires a modification of the two-component model to indicate that deposition of elements during condensation of high temperature material was not an all-or-nothing process.Apart from Bi and Tl, the elements studied have similar abundances in unequilibrated and equilibrated ordinary chondrites and only the former are unquestionably correlated with the degree of disequilibrium in silicate minerals. Only some ‘strongly-depleted’ elements exhibit at least one of the following—proportional depletion in UOC, progressive depletion in petrographic grades 3–6 ordinary chondrites and enrichment in the gas-containing dark portion of gas-rich, light-dark meteorites—indicating that such depletion does not ensure that an element will exhibit these trends. Partly or completely siderophile As, Au, Co, Ga, Mo, Re and Sb vary with chemical type in the same manner in both unequilibrated and equilibrated ordinary chondrites and doubtless reflect a process involving fractionation of metallic iron.  相似文献

Stable isotopic data of meteorites are critical for understanding the evolution of terrestrial planets. In this study, we report high-precision vanadium (V) isotopic compositions of 11 unequilibrated and equilibrated L chondrites. Our samples show an average δ51V of ??1.25‰?±?0.38‰ (2SD, n?=?11), which is ~?0.5‰ lighter than that of the bulk silicate Earth constrained by mantle peridotites. Isotopic fractionation in type 3 ordinary chondrites vary from ??1.76‰ to ??1.29‰, whereas the δ51V of equilibrated chondrites vary from ??1.37‰ to ??1.08‰. δ51V of L chondrites do not correlate with thermal metamorphism, shock stage, or weathering degree. Future studies are required to explore the reason for V isotope variation in the solar system.  相似文献

In order to investigate the possibility that chondrules may have had an independent existence in space, we have searched for unusual nuclear track densities in chondrules and studied the compositions of chondrule rims on chondrules from thirteen unequilibrated ordinary chondrites. Our search for unusual radiation features has been negative. Observed track densities can be explained in terms of cosmic ray exposure ages of the respective meteorites. Fine-grained rims that surround chondrules in unequilibrated ordinary chondrites are heterogeneous in composition consisting of varying proportions of iron sulfide and a poorly characterized silicate phase. The latter phase or phases are roughly chondritic in composition. Fine-grained rims of the kind seen in primitive type 3 ordinary chondrites are absent in higher petrographie grades; more crystalline, coarse-grained and lacy sulfide rims, however, are observed. Our observations can be explained by chondrules having had an independent existence in space during which they acquired rims either by condensation on their surfaces or by accretion of fine particles. However, accumulation of rims while chondrules resided on a meteorite parent body cannot be ruled out at this time. In any case, we do not propose that the chondrules themselves formed by condensation. Absence of a track record of space exposure of chondrules could be due to shielding by matter in space if, for example, chondrules were present in space in clouds made of dust, gas and/or chondrules.  相似文献

EET 90102 is the first known diopside-bearing EL6 chondrite. Diopside occurs in most aubrites and is occasionally found as rare small grains in unequilibrated enstatite chondrites, but is unknown from equilibrated enstatite chondrites. We have carried out a study of the rare earth element (REE) distributions in EET 90102, with a specific emphasis on diopside, in order to better understand its origin in this meteorite. We also present data for Ca-rich pyroxenes from two unequilibrated (EH3) enstatite chondrites for comparison. Our data show that diopside and other silicates in EET 90102 exhibit volatility-related anomalies indicative of formation under highly reducing conditions. Such anomalies have not previously been observed in EL6 chondrites, although they are common in unequilibrated enstatite chondrites. Diopside in EET 90102 probably formed by metamorphic equilibration of enstatite and oldhamite. The REE compositions of some grains, in particular the presence of positive Yb anomalies, indicate that they inherited their REE characteristics largely from CaS. Other grains have REE patterns that are more consistent with a derivation of diopside primarily from enstatite. In contrast to other EL6 chondrites, which experienced slow cooling, EET 90102 was quenched from high metamorphic temperatures. Thus, there may have been insufficient time to completely homogenize diopside REE compositions. The presence of diopside in EET 90102 simplifies one outstanding problem of aubrite formation. Melting of a diopside-bearing enstatite chondrite protolith provides a source for the abundant diopside in aubrites without requiring the oxidation of oldhamite, as suggested by previous research.  相似文献

Fifty-eight chondrules were separated from the Dhajala H3.8 chondrite and their thermoluminescence properties were measured. Chips from 30 of the chondrules were examined petrographically and with electron-microprobe techniques; the bulk compositions of 30 chondrules were determined by the fused bead technique. Porphyritic chondrules, especially 5 which have particularly high contents of mesostasis, tend to have higher TL (mass-normalized) than non-porphyritic chondrules. Significant correlations between log(TL) and the bulk CaO, Al2O3 and MnO content of the chondrules, and between log(TL) and the CaO, Al2O3, SiO2 and normative anorthite content of the chondrule glass, indicate an association between TL and the abundance and composition of mesostasis. Unequilibrated chondrules ( i.e. those whose olivine is compositionally heterogeneous and high in Ca) have low TL, whereas equilibrated chondrules have a wide range of TL, depending on their chemical and petrographic properties. We suggest that the TL level in a given chondrule is governed by its bulk composition (which largely determined the abundance and composition of constituent glass) and by metamorphism (which devitrfied the glass in those chondrules with high Ca glass to produce the TL phosphor). We also suggest that one reason why certain chondrules in type 3 ordinary chondrites are unequilibrated, while others are equilibrated, is that the mesostasis of the unequilibrated chondrules resisted the devitrification. This devitrification is necessary for the diffusive communication between chondrule grains and matrix that enables equilibration.  相似文献

Since 1994, the Rumuruti (R) chondrites have been recognized as a new, well-established chondrite group differing from carbonaceous, ordinary, and enstatite chondrites. The first R chondrite, Carlisle Lakes, was found in Australia in 1977. Meanwhile, the number has increased to 107 (December, 2010). This group is named after the Rumuruti meteorite, the first and so far the only R chondrite fall. Most of the R chondrites are breccias containing a variety of different clasts embedded in a clastic matrix. Some textural and mineralogical characteristics can be summarized as follows: (a) the chondrule abundance in large fragments and in unbrecciated rocks is ∼35–50 vol%; (b) Ca,Al-rich inclusions are rare; (c) the olivine abundance is typically 65–78 vol%; (d) the mean chondrule diameter is ∼400 μm; (e) in unequilibrated R chondrites, low-Ca pyroxene is dominating, whereas in equilibrated R chondrites it is Ca-rich pyroxene; (f) the typical olivine in a metamorphosed lithology is ∼Fa38–40; (g) matrix olivine in unequilibrated, type 3 fragments and rocks has much higher Fa (∼45–60 mol%) compared to matrix olivines in type 4–6 lithologies (∼Fa38–41); (h) spinels have a high TiO2 of ∼5 wt%; (i) abundant different noble metal-bearing phases (metals, sulfides, tellurides, arsenides) occur. The exception is the metamorphosed, type 5/6 R chondrite La Paz Icefield 04840 which contains hornblende, phlogopite, and Ca-poor pyroxene, the latter phase typically occurring in low-grade metamorphosed R chondrites only.In bulk composition, R chondrites have some affinity to ordinary chondrites: (a) the absence of significant depletions in Mn and Na in R chondrites and ordinary chondrites is an important feature to distinguish these groups from carbonaceous chondrites; (b) total Fe (∼24 wt%) of R chondrites is between those of H and L chondrites (27.1 and 21.6 wt%, respectively); (c) the average CI/Mg-normalized lithophile element abundances are ∼0.95 × CI, which is lower than those for carbonaceous chondrites (≥1.0 × CI) and slightly higher than those for ordinary chondrites (∼0.9 × CI); (d) trace element concentrations such as Zn (∼150 ppm) and Se (∼15 ppm) are much higher than in ordinary chondrites; (e) the whole rock Δ17O of ∼2.7 for R chondrites is the highest among all meteorite groups, and the mean oxygen isotope composition is δ17O = 5.36 ± 0.43, δ18O = 5.07 ± 0.86, Δ17O = +2.72 ± 0.31; (f) noble gas cosmic ray exposure ages of R chondrites range between ∼0.1 and 70 Ma. More than half of the R chondrites analyzed for noble gases contain implanted solar wind and, thus, are regolith breccias. The 43 R chondrites from Northern Africa analyzed so far for noble gases seem to represent at least 16 falls. Although the data base is still scarce, the data hint at a major collision event on the R chondrite parent body between 15 and 25 Ma ago.  相似文献

The matrices of sixteen unequilibrated ordinary chondrites (all witnessed falls) were studied microscopically in transmitted and reflected light and analyzed by electron microprobe. Selected specimens were also studied by scanning electron microscopy. These studies indicate that the fine-grained, opaque, silicate matrix of type 3 unequilibrated chondrites is compositionally, mineralogically and texturally distinct from the chondrules and chondrule fragments and may be the low temperature condensate proposed by Larimer and Anders (1967, 1970). Examination of the matrices of unequilibrated chondrites also shows that each meteorite has been metamorphosed, with the alteration ranging in intensity from quite mild, where the matrix has been only slightly altered, to a more severe metamorphism that has completely recrystallized the opaque matrix. Most of the metamorphic changes in the matrix occurred without significant effects on the compositions or textures of the chondrules. The metamorphic alteration probably resulted from a combination of processes including thermal metamorphism and the passage of shock waves. The present appearance of each unequilibrated chondrite is a result of the particular temperature and pressure conditions under which it and its components formed, plus the subsequent metamorphic alteration it experienced.  相似文献

High-precision Ni isotopic variations are reported for the metal phase of equilibrated and unequilibrated ordinary chondrites, carbonaceous chondrites, iron meteorites, mesosiderites, and pallasites. We also report new Zn and Cu isotopic data for some of these samples and combine them with literature Fe, Cu, and Zn isotope data to constrain the fractionation history of metals during nebular (vapor/solid) and planetary (metal/sulfide/silicate) phase changes. The observed variations of the 62Ni/58Ni, 61Ni/58Ni, and 60Ni/58Ni ratios vary linearly with mass difference and define isotope fractionation lines in common with terrestrial samples. This implies that Ni was derived from a single homogeneous reservoir. While no 60Ni anomaly is detected within the analytical uncertainties, Ni isotopic fractionation up to 0.45‰ per mass-difference unit is observed. The isotope compositions of Ni and Zn in chondrites are positively correlated. We suggest that, in ordinary chondrites, exchange between solid phases, in particular metal and silicates, and vapor followed by mineral sorting during accretion are the main processes controlling these isotopic variations. The positive correlation between Ni and Zn isotope compositions contrasts with a negative correlation between Ni (and Zn) and Cu isotope compositions, which, when taken together, do not favor a simple kinetic interpretation. The observed transition element similarities between different groups of chondrites and iron meteorites are consistent with the genetic relationships inferred from oxygen isotopes (IIIA/pallasites and IVA/L chondrites). Copper is an exception, which we suggest may be related to separate processing of sulfides either in the vapor or during core formation.  相似文献

Bulk compositions of metallic Fe-Ni from two equilibrated ordinary chondrites, Jilin (H5) and Anlong (H5), and two unequilibrated ones, GRV 9919 (L3) and GRV 021603 (H3), were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The CI-, Co-normalized abundances of siderophile and chalcophile elements of metallic Fe-Ni from the unequilibrated ordinary chondrites correlate with 50% condensation temperatures (i.e., volatility) of the elements. The refractory siderophile elements (i.e., platinum group elements, Re), Au, Ni and Co show a flat pattern (1.01×CI Co-normalized), while moderate elements (As, Cu, Ag, Ga, Ge, Zn) decrease with volatility from 0.63×CI (Co-normalized, As) to 0.05×CI (Co-normalized, Zn). Cr and Mn show deficit relative to the trend, probably due to their main partition in silicates and sulfides (nonmagnetic). Metallic Fe-Ni from the equilibrated ordinary chondrites shows similar patterns, except for strong deficit of Cr, Mn, Ag and Zn. It is indicated that these elements were almost all partitioned into silicates and/or sulfides during thermal metamorphism. The similar deficit of Cr, Mn, Ag and Zn was also found in iron meteorites. Our analyses demonstrate similar behaviors of W and Mo as refractory siderophile elements during condensation of the solar nebula, except for slight depletion of Mo in the L3 and H5 chondrites. The Mo-depletion of metallic Fe-Ni from GRV 9919 (L3) relative to GRV 021603 (H3) could be due to a more oxidizing condition of the former than the latter in the solar nebula. In contrast, the Mo-depletion of the metallic Fe-Ni from the H5 chondrites may reflect partition of Mo from metal to silicates and/or sulfides during thermal metamorphism in the asteroidal body.  相似文献

C3(O) chondrites comprise a metamorphic sequence. The following order reflects increasing grade: Kainsaz. Felix. Ornans. Lance. Isna, Warrenton. Assignment of Karoonda to the Ornans subtype is uncertain, but it is certainly of higher petrologic type than C3. Average olivine and pyroxene compositions in the metamorphic sequence change progressively from Fo12. Fs3 to Fo34, Fs11, respectively, and per cent mean deviation decreases. Kamacite and taenite change composition with increasing grade, reflecting higher equilibration temperatures. Blurring of textural features and Fe/Mg exchange between matrix and inclusions are also evident. As in the ordinary chondrites. contents of rare gases and possibly volatiles correlate with degree of metamorphism, but the effects are small. The meteorite Ornans presents an intriguing paradox. Observed chemical enrichment and depletion patterns reflect a higher metamorphic grade than do petrographic properties. The data suggest that abundance patterns of volatile components were not generated by metamorphism, but may represent primary differences. Strong correlations present in other C3(O) chondrites indicate some genetic link between metamorphism and composition, although the relationship is probably not causal. The autometamorphism model of Larimer and Anders (1967) appears to be the most straightforward explanation, but an observed negative correlation between the amount of matrix and content of volatiles suggests a re-examination of the two-component model. The decoupling mechanism required for Ornans is uncertain.  相似文献

The thermal history of a series of EH3 and EL3 chondrites has been investigated by studying the degree of structural order of the organic matter (OM) located and characterized in matrix areas by Raman micro-spectroscopy. By comparison with unequilibrated ordinary chondrites (UOCs) and CO and CV carbonaceous chondrites, the following petrologic types have been assigned to various E chondrites: Sahara 97096 and Allan Hills 84206: 3.1-3.4; Allan Hills 85170 and Parsa: 3.5; Allan Hills 85119: 3.7; Qingzhen, MacAlpine Hills 88136 and MacAlpine Hills 88184: 3.6-3.7. The petrologic type of Qingzhen is consistent with the abundance of the P3 noble gas component, a sensitive tracer of the grade of thermal metamorphism. The petrologic types are qualitatively consistent with the abundance of fine-grained matrix for the whole series. No significant effects of shock processes on the structure of OM were observed. However such processes certainly compete with thermal metamorphism and the possibility of an effect cannot be fully discarded, in particular in the less metamorphosed objects. The OM precursors accreted by the EH3 and EL3 parent bodies appear to be fairly similar to those of UOCs and CO and CV carbonaceous chondrites. Raman data however show some slight structural differences that could be partly accounted for by shock processes. The metamorphic history of EH3 and EL3 chondrites has often been described as complex, in particular regarding the combined action of shock and thermal metamorphism. Because OM maturity is mostly controlled by the temperature of peak metamorphism, it is possible to distinguish between the contributions of long duration thermal processes and that of shock processes. Comparison of the petrologic types with the closure temperatures previously derived from opaque mineral assemblages has revealed that the thermal history of EH3 and EL3 chondrites is consistent with a simple asteroidal onion shell model. Thermal metamorphism in enstatite chondrites appears to be fairly similar to that which takes place in other chondrite classes. The complex features recorded by mineralogy and petrology and widely reported in the literature appear to be mostly controlled by shock processes.  相似文献

Chondrules and isolated forsterites in five low-subtype ordinary chondrites [NWA 3127 (LL3.1), Sahara 97210 (LL3.2), Wells (LL3.3), Chainpur (LL3.4), and Sahara 98175 (LL3.5)] were studied using petrographic, EMPA, and SIMS techniques to better constrain the origin of chondrules and the olivine grains within them. Our results imply that igneous crystallization, vapor fractionation, redox effects, and open-system behavior were important processes. All olivine grains, including normal, relict, and isolated forsterite grains, show evidence for igneous fractionation under disequilibrium conditions, with olivine crystallizing during rapid cooling (closer to 2000 °C/h than to 100 °C/h). Vapor fractionation is manifested by anti-correlated abundances between refractory elements (Al, Sc, Y, Ti, Ca, V) and volatile elements (Cr, Mn, P, Rb, Fe) in olivine. Redox effects are evidenced in various ways, and imply that Fe, Co, Ni, and P were partitioned more into metal, and V was partitioned more into olivine, under reducing conditions in the most FeO-poor melts. There is no obvious evidence for systematic variations in olivine composition according to meteorite subtype, but shock melting in Sahara 97210 resulted in the injection of glass-derived melt into olivine, resulting in artificially high abundances of Ba, Sr, Na, Ti, and some other incompatible elements in olivine. Terrestrial weathering in a hot desert environment may have mobilized Ba and Sr in some glasses. Our data suggest that chondrules in ordinary chondrites experienced repeated thermal, chemical, and mechanical processing during a “recycling” process over an extended time period, which involved multiple episodes of melting under fluctuating redox and heating conditions, and multiple episodes of chondrule break-up in some cases. Forsterite grains, including normal grains in forsterite-bearing type I chondrules, the cores of isolated forsterites, and relict forsterite in type II chondrules, all crystallized from similar, refractory melts under reducing conditions; relict Mg-olivine and isolated forsterite grains were thus derived from type I chondrules. Olivine in type II chondrules, including normal grains and ferroan overgrowths on relict Mg-olivine, crystallized from more volatile-rich, oxidized, and relatively unfractionated melts. Relict dusty olivine grains in type I chondrules were derived from type II chondrules during incomplete melting episodes involving reduction and some vaporization, with clear (non-dusty) grains in dusty olivine-bearing chondrules crystallizing from the reduced and partly vaporized melts. Melt compositions parental to normal olivine grains in type I and II chondrules are systematically enriched in refractory elements compared to bulk chondrule compositions, implying that chondrules often experienced open-system exchange with more volatile-rich surroundings after some olivine had crystallized, possibly while the chondrules were still partly molten. Type II chondrules could have been derived from type I chondrules by the addition of relatively volatile-rich material, followed by re-melting and little evaporation under oxidizing conditions. In contrast, type I chondrules could have been derived from type II chondrules by re-melting involving more-or-less evaporation under reducing conditions. Chemical, oxygen isotope, and petrographic data are best accommodated by a model in which there were several (>2-3, sometimes ?4-5) melting episodes for most chondrules in ordinary chondrites.
