The 21 centimeter (21 cm) line emission from neutral hydrogen in the inter-galactic medium (IGM) at high redshifts is strongly contaminated by foreground sources such as the diffuse Galactic synchrotron emission and free-free emission from the Galaxy, as well as emission from extragalactic radio sources, thus making its observation very complicated. However, the 21 cm signal can be recovered through its structure in fre-quency space, as the power spectrum of the foreground contamination is expected to be smooth over a wide band in frequency space while the 21 cm fluctuations vary signifi-cantly. We use a simple polynomial fitting to reconstruct the 21 cm signal around four frequencies 50, 100, 150 and 200 MHz with an especially small channel width of 20 kHz. Our calculations show that this multifrequency fitting approach can effectively recover the 21 cm signal in the frequency range 100 ~ 200 MHz. However, this method doesn't work well around 50 MHz because of the low intensity of the 21 cm signal at this frequency. We also show that the fluctuation of detector noise can be suppressed to a very low level by taking long integration times, which means that we can reach a sensitivity of ≈ 10 mK at 150 MHz with 40 antennas in 120 hours of observations.  相似文献

Detecting redshifted 21-cm emission from neutral hydrogen in the early Universe promises to give direct constraints on the epoch of reionization (EoR). It will, though, be very challenging to extract the cosmological signal (CS) from foregrounds and noise which are orders of magnitude larger. Fortunately, the signal has some characteristics which differentiate it from the foregrounds and noise, and we suggest that using the correct statistics may tease out signatures of reionization. We generate mock data cubes simulating the output of the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) EoR experiment. These cubes combine realistic models for Galactic and extragalactic foregrounds and the noise with three different simulations of the CS. We fit out the foregrounds, which are smooth in the frequency direction, to produce residual images in each frequency band. We denoise these images and study the skewness of the one-point distribution in the images as a function of frequency. We find that, under sufficiently optimistic assumptions, we can recover the main features of the redshift evolution of the skewness in the 21-cm signal. We argue that some of these features – such as a dip at the onset of reionization, followed by a rise towards its later stages – may be generic, and give us a promising route to a statistical detection of reionization.  相似文献

One of the main obstacles for extracting the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) signal from observations in the mm-submm range is the foreground contamination by emission from Galactic components: mainly synchrotron, free-free and thermal dust emission. Due to the statistical nature of the intrinsic CMB signal it is essential to minimize the systematic errors in the CMB temperature determinations. Following the available knowledge of the spectral behavior of the Galactic foregrounds simple power law-like spectra have been assumed. The feasibility of using a simple neural network for extracting the CMB temperature signal from the combined signal CMB and the foregrounds has been investigated. As a specific example, we have analysed simulated data, as expected from the ESA Planck CMB mission. A simple multilayer perceptron neural network with 2 hidden layers can provide temperature estimates over more than 80 per cent of the sky that are to a high degree uncorrelated with the foreground signals. A single network will be able to cover the dynamic range of the Planck noise level over the entire sky.  相似文献

21-cm tomography is expected to be difficult in part because of serious foreground contamination. Previous studies have found that line-of-sight approaches are capable of cleaning foregrounds to an acceptable level on large spatial scales, but not on small spatial scales. In this paper, we introduce a Fourier space formalism for describing the line-of-sight methods, and use it to introduce an improved new method for 21-cm foreground cleaning. Heuristically, this method involves fitting foregrounds in Fourier space using weighted polynomial fits, with each pixel weighted according to its information content. We show that the new method reproduces the old one on large angular scales, and gives marked improvements on small scales at essentially no extra computational cost.  相似文献

Observations of the redshifted 21-cm HI fluctuations promise to be an important probe of the post-reionization era (z≤ 6). In this paper we calculate the expected signal and foregrounds for the upgraded Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) which operates at frequency ν o = 326.5 MHz which corresponds to redshift z = 3.35. Assuming that the visibilities contain only the HI signal and system noise, we show that a 3 σ detection of the HI signal (~1 mK) is possible at angular scales 11 to 3° with ≈1000 h of observation. Foreground removal is one of the major challenges for a statistical detection of the redshifted 21 cm HI signal. We assess the contribution of different foregrounds and find that the 326.5 MHz sky is dominated by the extragalactic point sources at the angular scales of our interest. The expected total foregrounds are 104?105 times higher than the HI signal.  相似文献

Polarization is the next frontier of cosmic microwave background analysis, but its signal is dominated over much of the sky by foregrounds which must be carefully removed. To determine the efficacy of this cleaning, it is necessary to have sensitive tests for residual foreground contamination in polarization sky maps. The dominant Galactic foregrounds introduce a large-scale anisotropy on to the sky, so it makes sense to use a statistic sensitive to overall directionality for this purpose. Here, we adapt the rapidly computable     statistic of Bunn and Scott to polarization data, and demonstrate its utility as a foreground monitor by applying it to the low-resolution Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 3-yr sky maps. With a thorough simulation of the maps' noise properties, we find no evidence for contamination in the foreground cleaned sky maps.  相似文献

The remarkable improvement in the estimates of different cosmological parameters in recent years has been largely spearheaded by accurate measurements of the angular power spectrum of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. This has required removal of foreground contamination as well as detector noise bias with reliability and precision. Recently, a novel model-independent method for the estimation of CMB angular power spectrum from multi-frequency observations has been proposed and implemented on the first year WMAP (WMAP-1) data by Saha et al. [Saha, R., Jain, P., Souradeep, T., 2006. ApJL, 645, L89]. We review the results from WMAP-1 and also present the new angular power spectrum based on three years of the WMAP data (WMAP-3). Previous estimates have depended on foreground templates built using extraneous observational input to remove foreground contamination. This is the first demonstration that the CMB angular spectrum can be reliably estimated with precision from a self contained analysis of the WMAP data. The primary product of WMAP are the observations of CMB in 10 independent difference assemblies (DA) distributed over five frequency bands that have uncorrelated noise. Our method utilizes maximum information available within WMAP data by linearly combining DA maps from different frequencies to remove foregrounds and estimating the power spectrum from the 24 cross-power spectra of clean maps that have independent noise. An important merit of the method is that the expected residual power from unresolved point sources is significantly tempered to a constant offset at large multipoles (in contrast to the l2 contribution expected from a Poisson distribution) leading to a small correction at large multipoles. Hence, the power spectrum estimates are less susceptible to uncertainties in the model of point sources.

The brightness temperature fluctuations in the 21-cm background related to the neutral hydrogen distribution provide a probe of the physics related to the era of reionization, when the intergalactic medium changed from being completely neutral to partially ionized. We formulate statistics of 21-cm brightness temperature anisotropies in terms of the angular power spectrum, the bispectrum, and the trispectrum. Using the trispectrum, we estimate the covariance related to the power spectrum measurements and show that correlations resulting from non-Gaussianities are below a per cent, at most. While all-sky observations of the 21-cm background at arcminute-scale resolution can be used to measure the bispectrum with a cumulative signal-to-noise ratio of the order of a few tens, in the presence of foregrounds and instrumental noise related to first-generation interferometers, the measurement is unlikely to be feasible. For most purposes, non-Gaussianities in 21-cm fluctuations can be ignored and the distribution can be described with Gaussian statistics. Because 21-cm fluctuations are significantly contaminated by foregrounds, such as galactic synchrotron or low-frequency radio point sources, the lack of significant non-Gaussianity in the signal suggests that any significant detection of non-Gaussianity could be the result of foregrounds. Similarly, in addition to the frequency information that is now proposed to separate 21-cm fluctuations from foregrounds, if the non-Gaussian structure of foregrounds is known a priori, this additional information could potentially be used to reduce the confusion further.  相似文献

One of the fundamental problems in extracting the cosmic microwave background signal (CMB) from millimeter/submillimeter observations is the pollution by emission from the Milky Way: synchrotron, free-free, and thermal dust emission. To extract the fundamental cosmological parameters from CMB signal, it is mandatory to minimize this pollution since it will create systematic errors in the CMB power spectra. In previous investigations, it has been demonstrated that the neural network method provide high quality CMB maps from temperature data. Here the analysis is extended to polarization maps. As a concrete example, the WMAP 7-year polarization data, the most reliable determination of the polarization properties of the CMB, has been analyzed. The analysis has adopted the frequency maps, noise models, window functions and the foreground models as provided by the WMAP Team, and no auxiliary data is included. Within this framework it is demonstrated that the network can extract the CMB polarization signal with no sign of pollution by the polarized foregrounds. The errors in the derived polarization power spectra are improved compared to the errors derived by the WMAP Team.  相似文献

We investigate which practical constraints are imposed by foregrounds on the detection of the B-mode polarization generated by gravitational waves, in the case of experiments of the type currently being planned. As the B-mode signal is probably dominated by foregrounds at all frequencies, the detection of the cosmological component depends drastically on our ability to remove foregrounds. We provide an analytical expression with which to estimate the level of the residual polarization for Galactic foregrounds, according to the method employed for their subtraction. We interpret this result in terms of the lower limit of the tensor-to-scalar ratio r that allows us to disentangle the cosmological B-mode polarization from the foreground contribution. Polarized emission from extragalactic radio sources and gravitational lensing is also taken into account. As a first approach, we consider the ideal limit of an instrumental noise-free experiment: for full-sky coverage and a resolution of 1°, we obtain a limit of   r ∼ 10−4  . This value can be improved by high-resolution experiments and, in principle, there is no clear fundamental limit on the detectability of the polarization of gravitational waves. Our analysis is also applied to planned or hypothetical future polarization experiments, taking into account expected noise levels.  相似文献

We present the first tests of a new method, the correlated component analysis (CCA) based on second-order statistics, to estimate the mixing matrix, a key ingredient to separate astrophysical foregrounds superimposed to the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). In the present application, the mixing matrix is parametrized in terms of the spectral indices of Galactic synchrotron and thermal dust emissions, while the free–free spectral index is prescribed by basic physics, and is thus assumed to be known. We consider simulated observations of the microwave sky with angular resolution and white stationary noise at the nominal levels for the Planck satellite, and realistic foreground emissions, with a position-dependent synchrotron spectral index. We work with two sets of Planck frequency channels: the low-frequency set, from 30 to 143 GHz, complemented with the Haslam 408 MHz map, and the high-frequency set, from 217 to 545 GHz. The concentration of intense free–free emission on the Galactic plane introduces a steep dependence of the spectral index of the global Galactic emission with Galactic latitude, close to the Galactic equator. This feature makes difficult for the CCA to recover the synchrotron spectral index in this region, given the limited angular resolution of Planck , especially at low frequencies. A cut of a narrow strip around the Galactic equator  (| b | < 3°)  , however, allows us to overcome this problem. We show that, once this strip is removed, the CCA allows an effective foreground subtraction, with residual uncertainties inducing a minor contribution to errors on the recovered CMB power spectrum.  相似文献

The Superconducting Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor (SIS) receivers have become the preferred method for (sub)millimeter-wave radio astronomical observations due to the extremely low receiver noise temperature. The coupling noise of the local oscillator (LO) system is also a part of the receiver noise. In many years of astronomical observations, it is found that the LO-coupled noise cannot be completely ignored, which has a certain impact on the sensitivity of astronomical observations. The noise temperature of the superconducting SIS receiver was tested using two different kinds of signal generators as the primary signal source of the LO system. It is found that the base noise output by the signal generator can be coupled into the receiver to increase the receiver noise. By adding a narrow band filter to the output of the signal generator, the base noise of the signal generator can be filtered out, and this part noise of the receiver can be eliminated, the overall noise of the receiver is reduced, and the sensitivity of the telescope is improved.  相似文献

A preferred method to detect the curl-component, or B-mode, signature of inflationary gravitational waves (IGWs) in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization, in the absence of foregrounds and lensing, is a prolonged integration over a single patch of sky of a few square degrees. In practice, however, foregrounds abound and the sensitivity to B modes can be improved considerably by finding the region of sky cleanest of foregrounds. The best strategy to detect B modes thus involves a tradeoff between exploration (to find lower-foreground patches) and exploitation (through prolonged integration). This problem is akin to the multi-armed bandit (MAB) problem in probability theory, wherein a gambler faces a series of slot machines with unknown winning odds and must develop a strategy to maximize his/her winnings with some finite number of pulls. While the optimal MAB strategy remains to be determined, a number of algorithms have been developed in an effort to maximize the winnings. Here, based on this resemblance, we tackle the search for IGW B modes with single frequency experiments in the presence of spatially varying foregrounds by developing adaptive survey strategies to optimize the sensitivity to IGW B modes. We demonstrate, using realistic foreground models and taking lensing-induced B modes into account, that adaptive experiments can substantially improve the upper bound on the tensor-to-scalar ratio (by factors of 2 and 3 in single frequency experiments, and possibly even more). Similar techniques can be applied to other surveys, including 21-cm measurements of signatures of the epoch of reionization, searches for a stochastic primordial gravitational wave background, deep-field imaging by the James Webb Space Telescope or various radio interferometers, and transient follow-up searches.  相似文献

An efficient algorithm for adaptive kernel smoothing (AKS) of two-dimensional imaging data has been developed and implemented using the Interactive Data Language ( idl ). The functional form of the kernel can be varied (top-hat, Gaussian, etc.) to allow different weighting of the event counts registered within the smoothing region. For each individual pixel, the algorithm increases the smoothing scale until the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) within the kernel reaches a pre-set value. Thus, noise is suppressed very efficiently, while at the same time real structure, that is, signal that is locally significant at the selected S/N level, is preserved on all scales. In particular, extended features in noise-dominated regions are visually enhanced. The asmooth algorithm differs from other AKS routines in that it allows a quantitative assessment of the goodness of the local signal estimation by producing adaptively smoothed images in which all pixel values share the same S/N above the background .
We apply asmooth to both real observational data (an X-ray image of clusters of galaxies obtained with the Chandra X-ray Observatory) and to a simulated data set. We find the asmooth ed images to be fair representations of the input data in the sense that the residuals are consistent with pure noise, that is, they possess Poissonian variance and a near-Gaussian distribution around a mean of zero, and are spatially uncorrelated.  相似文献

We use the results of high resolution numerical simulations to fix the theoretical model of high redshift quasars (QSOs) ionizing and heating neutral gas, and predict the signal characteristics and signal/noise (S/N) ratios for Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) to observe the 21 cm radiation around QSO. Our conclusions are summarized as: (1) the 21 cm frequency spectrum under the FAST field has full HII region for the QSO at z=8 and with luminosity similar to ULAS J1120+0641, while has only a small trough for the QSO at z=10 and with low luminosity; (2) the effect of Finite Light Travel Time (FLTT) obviously changes the 21 cm frequency spectrum of high redshift QSOs, makes the transition curve at lower frequency much steeper than that at higher frequency; (3) the FAST telescope can observe the 21 cm radiation of high redshift QSO with very high S/N ratio as high as 12, thus can identify the HII regions and the FLTT effect.  相似文献

We use a model of polarized Galactic emission developed by the Planck collaboration to assess the impact of foregrounds on B -mode detection at low multipoles. Our main interest is in applications of noisy polarization data and in particular in assessing the feasibility of B -mode detection by Planck . This limits the complexity of foreground subtraction techniques that can be applied to the data. We analyse internal linear combination techniques and show that the offset caused by the dominant E -mode polarization pattern leads to a fundamental limit of   r ∼ 0.1  for the tensor–scalar ratio even in the absence of instrumental noise. We devise a simple, robust, template fitting technique using multifrequency polarization maps. We show that template fitting using Planck data alone offers a feasible way of recovering primordial B -modes from dominant foreground contamination, even in the presence of noise on the data and templates. We implement and test a pixel-based scheme for computing the likelihood function of cosmological parameters at low multipoles that incorporates foreground subtraction of noisy data.  相似文献
