I present a scenario by which an accretion flow with alternating angular momentum on to a newly born neutron star in a core collapse supernova(CCSN) efficiently amplifies magnetic fields and by that launches jets. The accretion flow of a collapsing core on to the newly born neutron star suffers spiral standing accretion shock instability(SASI). This instability leads to a stochastically variable angular momentum of the accreted gas, which in turn forms an accretion flow with alternating directions of the angular momentum, and hence alternating shear, at any given time. I study the shear in this alternating-shear sub-Keplerian inflow in published simulations, and present a new comparison with Keplerian accretion disks. From that comparison I argue that it might be as efficient as Keplerian accretion disks in amplifying magnetic fields by a dynamo. I suggest that although the average specific angular momentum of the accretion flow is small, namely, sub-Keplerian, this alternating-shear accretion flow can launch jets with varying directions, namely, jittering jets. Neutrino heating is an important ingredient in further energizing the jets. The jittering jets locally revive the stalled accretion shock in the momentarily polar directions, and by that they explode the star. I repeat again my call for a paradigm shift from a neutrino-driven explosion of CCSNe to a jet-driven explosion mechanism that is aided by neutrino heating.  相似文献

We present a model that relates the width of the broad emission lines of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to the Keplerian velocity of an accretion disk at a critical distance from the central black hole. This critical distance falls in a region bounded on the inward side by the transition radius between the radiation pressure- and the gas pressure-dominated region of the accretion disk and on the outward side by the maximum radius below which a stabilizing, radially accreting and vertically outflowing corona exists. We show that in the framework of this picture, the observed range of Hbeta FWHMs from broad-line to narrow-line type 1 AGNs is well reproduced as a function of the accretion rate. This interval of velocities is the only permitted range and goes from approximately 20,000 km s-1 for sub-Eddington accretion rates to approximately 1000 km s-1 for Eddington accretion rates.  相似文献

Energetic outflows provide a dramatic accompaniment to accretion disks in all stages of star formation. The low extinction toward Classical T Tauri stars offers an opportunity to probe the star-disk interface region to search for the launch site and acceleration region of accretion-driven winds. This search is complicated by the fact that the dominant sources of emission in the optical and ultraviolet are the funnel flows and accretion shocks associated with magnetospheric accretion. Thus the quest for inner wind diagnostics requires disentangling accretion and outflow processes from the same line profile. We discuss two tracers of a high velocity inner wind in stars with high disk accretion rates. One, a hot component, is traced by helium emission and must arise very close to the star. A second, cooler component, is traced by blueshifted absorption in strong resonance lines and arises further from the star, but still within about ten stellar radii. We present evidence that the character of both magnetospheric accretion and the inner wind may differ among stars with high and low disk accretion rates.  相似文献

Abstract— Widespread evidence exists for heating that caused melting, thermal metamorphism, and aqueous alteration in meteorite parent bodies. Previous simulations of asteroid heat transfer have assumed that accretion was instantaneous. For the first time, we present a thermal model that assumes a realistic (incremental) accretion scenario and takes into account the heat budget produced by decay of 26Al during the accretion process. By modeling 6 Hebe (assumed to be the H chondrite parent body), we show that, in contrast to results from instantaneous accretion models, an asteroid may reach its peak temperature during accretion, the time at which different depth zones within the asteroid attain peak metamorphic temperatures may increase from the center to the surface, and the volume of high‐grade material in the interior may be significantly less than that of unmetamorphosed material surrounding the metamorphic core. We show that different times of initiation and duration of accretion produce a spectrum of evolutionary possibilities, and thereby, highlight the importance of the accretion process in shaping an asteroid's thermal history. Incremental accretion models provide a means of linking theoretical models of accretion to measurable quantities (peak temperatures, cooling rates, radioisotope closure times) in meteorites that were determined by their thermal histories.  相似文献

Previously unexplored accretion regimes associated with the rotation of accreting matter, namely the perturbations of a quasi-spherical subsonic settling flow and Bondi-Hoyle accretion in the presence of axial rotation, are considered within the framework of ideal hydrodynamics. For subsonic settling accretion, the perturbations are shown to grow rapidly as the gravitating center is approached, so that the flow in the inner regions can no longer be considered quasi-spherical. For Bondi-Hoyle accretion, a vacuum cylindrical cavity is shown to be formed at large distances from the gravitating center near the flow axis, with the flow velocity outside this cavity being virtually independent of the distance to the rotation axis.  相似文献

An analysis is presented of the hydrodynamic aspects of the growth of protostellar disks from the accretion (or collapse) of a rotating gas cloud. The size, mass, and radiative properties of protostellar disks are determined by the distribution of mass and angular momentum in the clouds from which they are formed, as well as from the dissipative processes within the disks themselves. The angular momentum of the infalling cloud is redistributed by the action of turbulent viscosity on a shear layer near the surface of the disk (downstream of the accretion shock) and on the radial shear across cylindrical surfaces parallel to the rotation axis. The fraction of gas that is fed into a central core (protostar) during accretion depends on the ratio of the rate of viscous diffusion of angular momentum to the accretion rate; rapid viscous diffusion (or a low accretion rate) promotes a large core-to-disk mass ratio. The continuum radiation spectrum of a highly viscous disk is similar to that of a steady-state accretion disk without mass addition. It is possible to construct models of the primitive solar nebula as an accretion disk, formed by the collapse of a slowly rotating protostellar cloud, and containing the minimum mass required to account for the planets. Other models with more massive disks are also possible.  相似文献

We propose a simplified model of outflow/jet driven by the Blandford–Payne (BP) process from advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAF) and derive the expressions of the BP power and disk luminosity based on the conservation laws of mass, angular momentum and energy. We fit the 2–10 keV luminosity and kinetic power of 15 active galactic nucleus (AGNs) of sub-Eddington luminosity. It is found that there exists an anti-correlation between the accretion rate and the advection parameter, which could be used to explain the correlation between Eddington-scaled kinetic power and bolometric luminosity of the 15 samples. In addition, the Ledlow–Owen relation for FR I/II dichotomy is re-expressed in a parameter space consisting of logarithm of dimensionless accretion rate versus that of the BH mass. It turns out that the FR I/II dichotomy is determined mainly by the dimensionless accretion rate, being insensitive to the BH mass. And the dividing accretion rate is less than the critical accretion rate for ADAFs, suggesting that FR I sources are all in the ADAF state.  相似文献

During the formation of the solar system the variation of the gravitational field produced by removal of a nebula with its moderately massive accretion disk led to sweeping of the Jovian commensurability resonances through the asteroid zone. This process produced increased eccentricities and random velocities of the early planetesimals which resulted in collisional comminution rather than accretion. The existence of the asteroids, their low mass density, and their high relative velocities are interpreted as due to disruption of the accretion processes of the terrestrial planets by the influence of Jupiter.  相似文献

The growth of supermassive black holes by merging and accretion in hierarchical models of galaxy formation is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. A tight linear relation between masses of black holes and masses of bulges arises if the mass accreted by supermassive black holes scales linearly with the mass-forming stars and if the redshift evolution of mass accretion tracks closely that of star formation. Differences in redshift evolution between black hole accretion and star formation introduce a considerable scatter in this relation. A non-linear relation between black hole accretion and star formation results in a non-linear relation between masses of remnant black holes and masses of bulges. The relation of black hole mass to bulge luminosity observed in nearby galaxies and its scatter are reproduced reasonably well by models in which black hole accretion and star formation are linearly related but do not track each other in redshift. This suggests that a common mechanism determines the efficiency for black hole accretion and the efficiency for star formation, especially for bright bulges.  相似文献

The long white-dwarf spin periods in the magnetic cataclysmic variables EX Hya and V1025 Cen imply that if the systems possess accretion discs then they cannot be in equilibrium. It has been suggested that instead they are discless accretors in which the spin-up torques resulting from accretion are balanced by the ejection of part of the accretion flow back towards the secondary. We present phase-resolved spectroscopy of V1025 Cen aimed at deducing the nature of the accretion flow, and compare this with simulations of a discless accretor. We find that both the conventional disc-fed model and the discless-accretor model have strengths and weaknesses, and that further work is needed before we can decide which applies to V1025 Cen.  相似文献

As the dense molecular cloud that was the precursor of our Solar System was collapsing to form a protosun and the surrounding solar-nebula accretion disk, infalling interstellar grains were heated much more effectively by radiation from the forming protosun than by radiation from the disk's accretion shock. Accordingly, we have estimated the temperatures experienced by these infalling grains using radiative diffusion calculations whose sole energy source is radiation from the protosun. Although the calculations are 1-dimensional, they make use of 2-D, cylindrically symmetric models of the density structure of a collapsing, rotating cloud. The temperature calculations also utilize recent models for the composition and radiative properties of interstellar grains (Pollack et al. 1994. Astrophys. J. 421, 615-639), thereby allowing us to estimate which grain species might have survived, intact, to the disk accretion shock and what accretion rates and molecular-cloud rotation rates aid that survival. Not surprisingly, we find that the large uncertainties in the free parameter values allow a wide range of grain-survival results: (1) For physically plausible high accretion rates or low rotation rates (which produce small accretion disks), all of the infalling grain species, even the refractory silicates and iron, will vaporize in the protosun's radiation field before reaching the disk accretion shock. (2) For equally plausible low accretion rates or high rotation rates (which produce large accretion disks), all non-ice species, even volatile organics, will survive intact to the disk accretion shock. These grain-survival conclusions are subject to several limitations which need to be addressed by future, more sophisticated radiative-transfer models. Nevertheless, our results can serve as useful inputs to models of the processing that interstellar grains undergo at the solar nebula's accretion shock, and thus help address the broader question of interstellar inheritance in the solar nebula and present Solar System. These results may also help constrain the size of the accretion disk: for example, if we require that the calculations produce partial survival of organic grains into the solar nebula, we infer that some material entered the disk intact at distances comparable to or greater than a few AU. Intriguingly, this is comparable to the heliocentric distance that separates the C-rich outer parts of the current Solar System from the C-poor inner regions.  相似文献

The observation of the hot gas surrounding Sgr A * and a few other nearby galactic nuclei imply that electron and proton mean free paths are comparable to the gas capture radius. So, the hot accretion flows are likely to proceed under week-collision conditions. Hence, thermal conduction has been suggested as a possible mechanism by which the sufficient extra heating is provided in hot advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) accretion discs. We consider the effects of thermal conduction in the presence of a toroidal magnetic field in an ADAF around a compact object. For a steady-state structure of such accretion flows, a set of self-similar solutions are presented. We find two types of solutions which represent high and slow accretion rate. They have different behaviours with saturated thermal conduction parameter, φ.  相似文献

The goal of this paper is to determine the characteristic cooling time of the accretion flowmatter near the surface of the magnetic white dwarf in the binary system EX Hya. Most of the X-ray photons in such binary systems are produced in an optically thin hot plasma with a temperature above 10 keV heated when the matter passes through the shock near the white dwarf surface. The total X-ray luminosity is determined by the matter accumulated below the shock in its cooling time. Thus, the X-ray luminosity variability related to the variations in the accretion rate onto the white dwarf surface must be suppressed at frequencies higher than the inverse cooling time. If the optically thin plasma radiation dominates in the rate of energy losses by the heated matter, which is true for white dwarfs with moderately strong magnetic fields, less than 1–10 MG, then the matter cooling time can give an estimate of the matter density in the accretion column. Given the accretion rate and the matter density in the accretion column at the white dwarf surface, the area of the accretion channel can be estimated. We have analyzed all of the currently available observational data for one of the brightest intermediate polars in the X-ray sky, EX Hya, from the RXTE and XMM-Newton observatories. The power spectra of its aperiodic variability have given an upper limit on the cooling time of the hot plasma: <1.5–2 s. For the observed accretion rate, ×1015 g s?1, this corresponds to a matter density below the shock surface ?1016 cm?3 and an area of the base of the accretion channel no more than <4.6 × 1015 cm2. Using the information about the maximum geometrical size of the accretion channel obtained by analyzing X-ray eclipses in the binary system EX Hya, we have derived an upper limit on the thickness of the flow over the surface of the magnetosphere near the white dwarf surface, ?3 × 106 cm, and the plasma penetration depth at the magnetospheric boundary, Δr/r ? 6 × 10?3.

One possible origin of the terrestrial planets involves their formation by gravitational accretion of particles originally in Keplerian orbits about the sun. Some implications of this theory are considered. A formal expression for the rate of mass accretion by a planet is developed. The formal singularity of the gravitational collision cross-section for low relative velocities is shown to be without physical significance when the accreting bodies are in heliocentric orbits. The distribution of particle velocities relative to an accreting planet is considered; the mean velocity increases with time. The internal temperature of an accreting planet is shown to depend simply on the accretion rate. A simple and physically reasonable approximate expression for a planetary accretion rate is proposed.  相似文献

We present results of 3D simulations of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) instabilities at the accretion disc–magnetosphere boundary. The instability is Rayleigh–Taylor, and develops for a fairly broad range of accretion rates and stellar rotation rates and magnetic fields. It manifests itself in the form of tall, thin tongues of plasma that penetrate the magnetosphere in the equatorial plane. The shape and number of the tongues changes with time on the inner disc dynamical time-scale. In contrast with funnel flows, which deposit matter mainly in the polar region, the tongues deposit matter much closer to the stellar equator. The instability appears for relatively small misalignment angles, Θ≲ 30°, between the star's rotation and magnetic axes, and is associated with higher accretion rates. The hotspots and light curves during accretion through instability are generally much more chaotic than during stable accretion. The unstable state of accretion has possible implications for quasi-periodic oscillations and intermittent pulsations from accreting systems, as well as planet migration.  相似文献

We present spectroscopic and high-speed photometric data of the eclipsing polar V895 Cen. We find that the eclipsed component is consistent with it being the accretion regions on the white dwarf. This is in contrast to Stobie et al. who concluded that the eclipsed component was not the white dwarf. Further, we find no evidence for an accretion disc in our data. From our Doppler tomography results, we find that the white dwarf has   M ≳0.7 M  . Our indirect imaging of the accretion stream suggests that the stream is brightest close to the white dwarf. When we observed V895 Cen in its highest accretion state, emission was concentrated along field lines leading to the upper pole. There is no evidence for enhanced emission at the magnetic coupling region.  相似文献

The secular evolution of the purely general relativistic low angular momentum accretion flow around a spinning black hole is shown to exhibit hysteresis effects. This confirms that a stationary shock is an integral part of such an accretion disc in the Kerr metric. The equations describing the space gradient of the dynamical flow velocity of the accreting matter have been shown to be equivalent to a first order autonomous dynamical systems. Fixed point analysis ensures that such flow must be multi-transonic for certain astrophysically relevant initial boundary conditions. Contrary to the existing consensus in the literature, the critical points and the sonic points are proved not to be isomorphic in general, they can form in a completely different length scales. Physically acceptable global transonic solutions must produce odd number of critical points. Homoclinic orbits for the flow possessing multiple critical points select the critical point with the higher entropy accretion rate, confirming that the entropy accretion rate is the degeneracy removing agent in the system. However, heteroclinic orbits are also observed for some special situation, where both the saddle type critical points of the flow configuration possesses identical entropy accretion rate. Topologies with heteroclinic orbits are thus the only allowed non-removable degenerate solutions for accretion flow with multiple critical points, and are shown to be structurally unstable. Depending on suitable initial boundary conditions, a homoclinic trajectory can be combined with a standard non-homoclinic orbit through an energy preserving Rankine-Hugoniot type of stationary shock, and multi-critical accretion flow then becomes truly multi-transonic. An effective Lyapunov index has been proposed to analytically confirm why certain class of transonic flow cannot accommodate shock solutions even if it produces multiple critical points.  相似文献

The structure of accretion discs around magnetic T Tauri stars is calculated numerically using a particle hydrodynamical code, in which magnetic interaction is included in the framework of King's diamagnetic blob accretion model. Setting up the calculation so as to simulate the density structure of a quasi-steady disc in the equatorial plane of a T Tauri star, we find that the central star's magnetic field typically produces a central hole in the disc and spreads out the surface density distribution. We argue that this result suggets a promising mechanism for explaining the unusual flatness (IR excess) of T Tauri accretion disc spectra.  相似文献
