We describe in-flight calibration of the Cassini Imaging Science Sub-system narrow- and wide-angle cameras using data from 2004 to 2009. We report on the photometric performance of the cameras including the use of polarization filters, point spread functions over a dynamic range greater than 107, gain and loss of hot pixels, changes in flat fields, and an analysis of charge transfer efficiency. Hot pixel behavior is more complicated than can be understood by a process of activation by cosmic ray damage and deactivation by annealing. Point spread function (PSF) analysis revealed a ghost feature associated with the narrow-angle camera Green filter. More generally, the observed PSFs do not fall off with distance as rapidly as expected if diffraction were the primary contributor. Stray light produces significant signal far from the center of the PSF. Our photometric analysis made use of calibrated spectra from eighteen stars and the spectral shape of the satellite Enceladus. The analysis revealed a shutter offset that differed from pre-launch calibration. It affects the shortest exposures. Star photometry results are reproducible to a few percent in most filters. No degradation in charge transfer efficiency has been detected although uncertainties are large. The results of this work have been digitally archived and incorporated into our calibration software CISSCAL available online.  相似文献

Using numerical simulations, we evaluated the gate structure effect of the front-illuminated (FI) charge-coupled device (CCD) on determining the point spread function (PSF) from the analysis of undersampled experimental data. The PSF of the Soft X-ray Telescope onboard Yohkoh was studied as a model case. Its full-width at half-maximum is about one pixel size, and the FI CCD was equipped in the telescope as a detector. Of the three emission lines used during the pre-launch experiment, the data from the lowest-energy line (carbon K-line, 0.28 keV) were significantly influenced by the gate structure. The results from previous studies regarding the analysis of pre-launch data were examined and compared with the results from our simulation, and the expected error ranges of the gate structure effect are discussed. We found that the error caused by the effect of the gate structure is significant; at an energy of 0.28 keV, the error may lead to a too sharp PSF by about a few tens of percent.  相似文献

We show the result of a search for compact sources in observations of Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) aboard the Yohkoh satellite. We focused the search on the highest-resolution SXT images taken with the SXT thick aluminum filter. Non-standard methods have been used in order to avoid data corrupted by spikes or dark current saturation effects. Search criteria and certain questions concerning the SXT database are addressed and discussed in more detail. For the most compact structures found we show also comparison of their brightness spatial distribution with ground calibration data. The search was performed to identify regions with well-localized X-ray emission in SXT images and to gather basic information about them.  相似文献

The point spread function of the SXT telescope aboardYohkoh has been measured in flight configuration in three different X-ray lines at White Sands Missile Range. We have fitted these data with an elliptical generalization of the Moffat function. Our fitting method consists of 2 minimizationin Fourier space, especially designed for matching of sharply peaked functions. We find excellent fits with a reduced 2 of order unity or less for single exposure point spread functions over most of the CCD. Near the edges of the CCD the fits are less accurate due to vignetting. From fitting results with summation of multiple exposures we find a systematic error in the fitting function of the order of 3% near the peak of the point spread function, which is close to the photon noise for typical SXT images in orbit. We find that the full width to half maximum and fitting parameters vary significantly with CCD location. However, we also find that point spread functions measured at the same location are consistent to one another within the limit determined by photon noise. A best analytical fit to the PSF as function of position on the CCD is derived for use in SXT image enhancement routines. As an aside result we have found that SXT can determine the location of point sources to about a quarter of a 2.54 arc sec pixel.This paper is dedicated to the memory of our friend and colleague Kermit Smith, who died in June 1993, after a valient fight with leukemia.  相似文献

The point spread function of the soft X-ray telescope (SXT) aboard the Yohkoh spacecraft is a Moffat function with elliptical characteristics. This function has two parameters, a and b, that are wavelength dependent in the X-ray region of interest. Since most SXT data analysis is performed with respect to plasma temperature rather than wavelength, it is useful to spectrally average these two parameters over wavelength with temperature as the free variable. The results of this spectral averaging are given here for users of SXT data.  相似文献

Difference imaging is a technique for obtaining precise relative photometry of variable sources in crowded stellar fields and, as such, constitutes a crucial part of the data reduction pipeline in surveys for microlensing events or transiting extrasolar planets. The Optimal Image Subtraction (OIS) algorithm of Alard & Lupton (1998) permits the accurate differencing of images by determining convolution kernels which, when applied to reference images with particularly good seeing and signal‐to‐noise (S/N), provide excellent matches to the point‐spread functions (PSF) in other images of the time series to be analysed. The convolution kernels are built as linear combinations of a set of basis functions, conventionally bivariate Gaussians modulated by polynomials. The kernel parameters, mainly the widths and maximal degrees of the basis function model, must be supplied by the user. Ideally, the parameters should be matched to the PSF, pixel‐sampling, and S/N of the data set or individual images to be analysed. We have studied the dependence of the reduction outcome as a function of the kernel parameters using our new implementation of OIS within the IDL‐based TRIPP package. From the analysis of noise‐free PSF simulations of both single objects and crowded fields, as well as the test images in the ISIS OIS software package, we derive qualitative and quantitative relations between the kernel parameters and the success of the subtraction as a function of the PSF widths and sampling in reference and data images and compare the results to those of other implementations found in the literature. The Heterodyne Instrument for the Far Infrared (HIFI) on board the Herschel Space Observatory is composed of a set of fourteen double sideband mixers. We discuss the general problem of the sideband ratio (SBR) determination and the impact of an imbalanced sideband ratio on the line calibration in double sideband heterodyne receivers. The HIFI SBR is determined from a combination of data taken during pre-launch gas cell tests and in-flight. The results and some of the calibration artefacts discovered in the gas cell test data are presented here along with some examples of how these effects appear in science data taken in orbit.  相似文献

We present a new derivation of the X-ray spectral sensitivity of the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) experiment onboard Yohkoh. The recalibration is based upon the hypothesis that, during the first 15 months of the mission, an absorbing material gradually built up on the entrance filters of the telescope. We have also re-evaluated the times and sizes of ruptures of the SXT entrance filters. The impact of this recalibration on derived filter-ratio temperature, emission measure, and calculated spectral irradiance is substantial, especially for SXT data prior to November 1992.  相似文献

The stellar composition of the Tycho-2 Catalogue in the range B-V = 0· m 75–1· m 25 has been reproduced through Monte Carlo simulations. For young and old stars of the red giant clump (RGC), the red giant branch, subgiants, red dwarfs, and thick-disk giants, we have specified the distributions in coordinates, velocities, B-V, and M V as a function of B-V and calculated their reduced proper motions, photometric distances from the (B-V)-M V calibration, and photoastrometric distances from the reduced proper motion-M V calibration. Our simulations have shown the following: (1) a sample of thin-disk giants within 500 pc with an admixture of less than 10% of other stars can be produced; (2) a sample of dwarfs within 100 pc almost without any admixture of other stars can be produced; (3) the Local Spiral Arm affects the RGC composition of any magnitude-limited catalog in favor of giants younger than 2 Gyr; (4) the samples produced using reduced proper motions can be used for kinematic studies, provided that the biases of the quantities being determined are simulated and taken into account; (5) the photometric distances correlate with the photoastrometric ones because of the correlation between the proper motion and magnitude; (6) the photometric distances are closer to the true ones for the red giant branch and red dwarfs as the categories of stars with a clear (B-V)-M V relation, while the photoastrometric distances are closer to the true ones for the RGC, subgiants, and thick-disk giants; (7) the calculated distances differ systematically from the true ones, but they can be used to analyze the three-dimensional distribution of stars. We describe the calibration, measurements and data reduction, ofthe dark current of the ISOCAM/LW detector. We point-out theexistence of two significant drifts of the LW dark-current, onethroughout the ISO mission, on a timescale of days, another within each single revolution, on a timescale of hours. We alsoshow the existence of a dependence of the dark current on thetemperature of the ISOCAM detector.By characterizing all these effects through polynomial fittings,we build a model for the LW calibration dark, that depends onthe epoch of observation (parametrized with the revolutionnumber and the time elapsed in that given revolution since theactivation) and on the temperature of the ISOCAM detector. Themodel parameters are tuned for each of ISOCAM/LW pixel.We show that the modelling is very effective in taking intoaccount the dark-current variations and allows a much cleanerdark subtraction than using a brute average of severalcalibration dark images.The residuals of the LW model-dark subtraction are, on average,similar to the pre-launch expectation.  相似文献

The Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) onboard Yohkoh often observed large-scale coronal loops connecting two active regions situated in opposite hemispheres. These are the trans-equatorial loop systems (TLSs). The formation mechanism of TLSs is not yet known. We analyzed a TLS observed simultaneously with Yohkoh/SXT and a coronagraph (SOHO/LASCO-C1). SOHO/LASCO-C1 observed loop expansion and eruption at the west solar limb. Yohkoh/SXT observed a rising motion (chromospheric evaporation) of hot and dense plasmas from the active regions located at the footpoints of the loop. Important results of our analyses are that (1) the loop eruption and the rising motion of the plasmas were simultaneous, (2) the TLS had a cusp-like appearance, and (3) the highest temperature region of the TLS was located above the bright loop seen in soft X rays. These observational results (loop expansion, eruption, and chromospheric evaporation) suggest that this bright (high-density) TLS was created by the same mechanism by which a solar flare occurs, namely, magnetic reconnection. In this paper, we propose a formation mechanism of the TLS that forms between two independent active regions.  相似文献

We describe a method for deriving the position and flux of point and compact sources observed by a scanning survey mission. Results from data simulated to test our method are presented, which demonstrate that at least a 10-fold improvement is achievable over that of extracting the image parameters, position and flux, from the equivalent data in the form of pixel maps. Our method achieves this improvement by analysing the original scan data and performing a combined, iterative solution for the image parameters. This approach allows for a full and detailed account of the point-spread function (PSF), or beam profile, of the instrument. Additionally, the positional information from different frequency channels may be combined to provide the flux-detection accuracy at each frequency for the same sky position. Ultimately, a final check and correction of the geometric calibration of the instrument may also be included. The Planck mission was used as the basis for our simulations, but our method will be beneficial for most scanning satellite missions, especially those with non-circularly symmetric PSFs.  相似文献

The temperature response functions of the Yohkoh/SXT are re-calculated based on the most recent elemental abundances and ionization balance available in the CHIANTI atomic database version 6.0.1. The new standard responses are calculated for three types of abundance; i.e., ‘coronal’, ‘hybrid’, and ‘photospheric’ abundances included in the CHIANTI database, and are available in SolarSoft since 2010. Comparison plots of the new and old response functions and filter ratios are available at the Yohkoh Legacy data Archive (). The three new responses generally peak at higher temperatures (at ≈ 10 MK) than the former standard response (at ≈ 5.6 MK) based on Mewe’s spectral model. The new responses with coronal and hybrid abundances have higher peak counts by a factor of 3 and 2, respectively, than those with the photospheric abundances and the former response based on Mewe’s model. The correction of the filter ratios depends on the type of filter and the range of the ratios to be used. In the significant cases, the new filter ratio produces 20 to 30% higher temperatures than the previous calibration. The choice of elemental abundance has a strong influence on the derived temperatures and emission measures, and often produces a variation significantly larger than the statistical and systematic errors considered so far.  相似文献

Exoplanetary transit and stellar oscillation surveys require a very high precision photometry. The instrumental noise has therefore to be minimized. First, we perform a semi‐analytical model of different noise sources. We show that the noise due the CCD electrodes can be overcome using a Gaussian PSF (Point Spread Function) of full width half maximum larger than 1.6 pixels. We also find that for a PSF size of a few pixels, the photometric aperture has to be at least 2.5 times larger than the PSF full width half maximum. Then, we compare a front‐ with a back‐illuminated CCD through a Monte‐Carlo simulation. Both cameras give the same results for a PSF full width half maximum larger than 1.5 pixels. All these simulations are applied to the A STEP (Antarctica Search for Transiting Extrasolar Planets) project. As a result, we choose a front‐illuminated camera for A STEP because of its better resolution and lower price, and we will use a PSF larger than 1.6 pixels. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. This report seeks to introduce the reader to a set of observations made during the decay phase of long-duration event (LDE) flares on the Sun. In a number of events, the soft X-ray images from Yohkoh SXT indicate a downward-directed flow field in the region immediately above the flare arcade. The prototypical event is the M5 flare of 20 January 1999, presented by McKenzie and Hudson (1999); since the time that paper was completed, eleven more events, all related to coronal mass ejections, have been found in the interval 1 January 1998 to 8 May 1999. As in the 20 January event, the speeds of downflow are 45–500 km s–1, lower than both the free fall speed and the typically assumed Alfvén speed. A comparison is drawn between the SXT observations and the EUV and H data, where such are available. Important additions to our knowledge since the first paper are: (i) the motion is evidenced by both dark and bright (i.e., X-ray emitting) features, some of which may have a loop-like morphology; (ii) no cool counterparts have been detected in H or EUV observations. The data are compared to the expected appearance according to two likely (and opposing) interpretations: an `above-the-arcade coronal rain' interpretation and a `shrinking magnetic flux tube' interpretation. In the current standard explanation of the formation of post-CME arcades, motion of the latter type may be related to outflow from a reconnection site. We report on preliminary results obtained with a Monte Carlo (MC) code developed to study the optical properties of Laue lenses for astro-physical observations. The MC code is written in the Python programming language and uses open source libraries. Among the physical quantities which can be investigated with the MC code, we paid our attention mainly to the estimation of the effective area, field of view (FOV) and point spread function (PSF) of the lens for observation of sources on-axis and off-axis.  相似文献

We perform an analysis of the TRACE telescope blur from EUV images. Theblur pattern is discussed in terms of the telescope point-spread function (PSF) for the 171 Å filter. The analysis performed consists of two steps. First, an initial shape for the PSF core is determined directly from TRACE EUV images. Second, the blind-deconvolution method is used for obtaining the final PSF shape. The PSF core peak is fitted by analytical functions to determine its parametric characteristics. The determined PSF includes the core central peak and peaks caused by diffraction effects inherent in TRACE EUV data. The diffraction portion of the PSF is studied theoretically in the Fraunhofer diffraction limit. The temperature dependence of the TRACE PSF shape is investigated for a selected temperature range. We also discuss general properties of the obtained PSF and its possible applications.  相似文献

This paper surveys coronal motions detected by the Yohkoh soft X-ray telescope SXT, emphasizing `global restructuring'. Large-scale structures in the solar corona can persist for time scales much longer than those of the supergranulation, and may have larger spatial scales. Flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) can disrupt these structures. A grazing-incidence telescope such as SXT provides a view of the corona biased in temperature towards the hotter components, but in a thick `observing slice' (spatial contribution function). This helps in seeing excitation (energy release) but may conceal some of the structural changes. The observations of restructuring largely appear to consist of expanding or outwards magnetic motions, which are endoergic. This suggests a conjecture regarding the existence of magnetic implosions on scales not yet detected, as a source of free energy.  相似文献

The SPI, Spectrometer aboard the ESA INTEGRAL satellite, to be launched in 2002, will study the gamma ray sky in the 20 keV to 8 MeV energy band with a spectral resolution of 2 keV for photons of 1 MeV thanks to its 19 germanium detectors. A coded mask imaging technique provides for a 2° angular resolution. An active BGO veto shield is used for background rejection. After the integration and test campaigns at CNES in Toulouse, the flight model of SPI has recently undergone a 1 month pre-launch calibration campaign at the CEA center of Bruyères le Châtel, using an accelerator for homogeneity measurements and high activity radioactive sources for imaging performance measurements. We report on the operational aspects of those measurements, whose analysis is foreseen to be published before launch.  相似文献
