Vertical profiles of electron density obtained in the vicinity of the plasmapause using the Alouette-II topside sounder have been analyzed to assess the presence of H+ flow in the topside ionosphere. The observations in the midnight sector show clearly the presence of the plasmapause; i.e. there is a sharp boundary separating the poleward regions of polar wind H+ flow and the more gentle conditions of the plasmasphere where light ions are present in abundance. In contrast, in the sunlit morning sector upwards H+ flow is deduced to be present to invariant latitudes as low as 48° (L = 2·2) in the regions normally known to be well inside the plasmasphere. The upwards H+ flux is sufficiently large (3 × 108 ions cm?2 sec?1) that the plasmapause cannot be seen in the latitudinal electron density contours of the topside ionosphere. The cause for this flow remains unknown but it may be a result of a diurnal refilling process.  相似文献

An analysis, with a representative (canonical) example of solar-flare-generated equatorial disturbances, is presented for the temporal and spatial changes in the solar wind plasma and magnetic field environment between the Sun and one astronomical unit (AU). Our objective is to search for first order global consequences rather than to make a parametric study. The analysis - an extension of earlier planar studies - considers all three plasma velocity and magnetic field components (V r, Vφ, V0, and B r, B0, Bφ) in any convenient heliospheric plane of symmetry such as the ecliptic plane, the solar equatorial plane, or the heliospheric equatorial plane chosen for its ability (in a tilted coordinate system) to order northern and southern hemispheric magnetic topology and latitudinal solar wind flows. Latitudinal velocity and magnetic field gradients in and near the plane of symmetry are considered to provide higher-order corrections of a specialized nature and, accordingly, are neglected, as is dissipation, except at shock waves. The representative disturbance is examined for the canonical case in which one describes the temporal and spatial changes in a homogeneous solar wind caused by a solar-flare-generated shock wave. The ‘canonical’ solar flare is assumed to produce a shock wave that has a velocity of 1000 km s#X2212;1 at 0.08 AU. We have examined all plasma and field parameters at three radial locations: central meridian and 33° W and 90° W of the flare's central meridian. A higher shock velocity (3000 km s#X2212;1) was also used to demonstrate the model's ability to simulate a strongly-kinked interplanetary field. Among the global (first-order) results are the following: (i) incorporation of a small meridional magnetic field in the ambient magnetic spiral field has negligible effect on the results; (ii) the magnetic field demonstrates strong kinking within the interplanetary shocked flow, even reversed polarity that - coupled with low temperature and low density - suggests a viable explanation for observed ‘magnetic clouds’ with accompanying double-streaming of electrons at directions ~ 90° to the heliocentric radius.  相似文献

Data on the thermal structure of the nightside middle atmosphere of Venus, from 84 to 137 km altitude, have been obtained from analysis of deceleration measurements from the third Pioneer Venus small probe, the night probe, which entered the atmosphere near the midnight meridian at 27°S latitude. Comparison of the midnight sounding with the morning sounding at 31°S latitude indicates that the temperature structure is essentially diurnally invariant up to 100 km, above which the nightside structure diverges sharply from the dayside toward lower temperatures. Very large diurnal pressure differences develop above 100 km with dayside pressure ten times that on the nightside at 126 km altitude. This has major implications for upper atmospheric dynamics. The data are compared with the measurements of G. M. Keating, J. Y. Nicholson, and L. R. Lake (1980, J. Geophys. Res., 85, 7941–7956) above 140 km with theoretical thermal structure models of Dickinson, and with data obtained by Russian Venera spacecraft below 100 km. Midnight temperatures are ~ 130°K, somewhat warmer than those reported by Keating et al.  相似文献

The convection electric field in the vicinity of the plasmapause in the midnight sector during magnetospheric substorms has been obtained on the basis of spectral analysis of Pc1 hydromagnetic (HM) waves observed at the low latitude station, Onagawa (Φ = 28.°3, Λ = 206.°8). Variations of the field are consistent for four independent substorm events studied. The calculation implies that the convection electric field increases westwards up to ~1.0 mV/m during the expansion phase of the substorms, changes polarity near the end of the expansion phase, and then points eastwards during the recovery phase.  相似文献

Incoherent scatter measurements of electron density and vertical O+ fluxes over Millstone Hill (42.6°N, 71.5°W) previously have been used to study the exchange of plasma between the ionosphere and the magnetosphere. During the daytime there is usually an upward flux of O+ ions above about 450 km that can be measured readily and equated to the escaping proton flux. At night the O+ fluxes usually are downwards everywhere owing to the decay of the F-layer, and it becomes difficult to detect effects due an arriving proton flux. In a new study of the nighttime fluxes, appeal was made to the estimated abundance of the H+ ions in the upper F-region which can be extracted from the observations. From a study of the behavior on 25 days over the interval 1969–1973, we conclude that in the daytime the flux always is upwards and close to its limiting value. This situation persists throughout the night in summer at times of high sunspot activity (e.g., 1969). There is a period of downward flux prior to ionospheric sunrise on winter nights whose duration increases with decreasing sunspot number. As sunspot minimum is approached (e.g., in 1973) downward fluxes are encountered for a brief period prior to ionospheric sunrise in summer also. Thus, over most parts of sunspot cycle, it appears that the protonosphere supplies ionization to the winter night ionosphere, while being maintained from the summer hemisphere. This helps explain the smallness of the day-to-night variations reported for the electron content of magnetospheric flux tubes near L = 4 in the American sector.  相似文献

A series of simultaneous incoherent-backscatter and 6300 Å tilting-filter photometer observations were made in the winter and early spring of 1972 at Chatanika, Alaska. These observations have been combined for magnetically quiet nights to deduce the presence of excitation by two sources in addition to dissociative recombination. The first appears to be a source that is steady for at least three hours, centered about local midnight, but that varies from night to night, taking on values between 10 and 40 Rayleighs for the nights in question. It is suggested that this source may be a flux of low-energy electrons or protons. The second source is impact excitation by electrons from the magnetic conjugate point. The emission due to this source appears to be small immediately after local sunset, rises to a maximum at about 92° conjugate solar zenith angle (CSZA), and then decreases to zero in the vicinity of 105° CSZA. The deduced intensities for this source at 92° CSZA are in the region of 15–30 Rayleighs for local F-layer critical frequencies of 3?2 MHz, respectively.  相似文献

Nearly 1000 magnetopause crossings from HEOS-2, HEOS-1, OGO-5 and 5 IMP space-craft covering most of the northern and part of the southern dayside and near-Earth tail magnetopause (X >?15 RE) have been used to perform a detailed study of the three-dimensional shape and location of the magnetopause. The long-term influence of the solar wind conditions on the average magnetopause geometry has been reduced by normalising the radial distances of the observed magnetopause crossings to an average dynamical solar wind pressure. Best-fit ellipsoids have been obtained to represent the average magnetopause surface in geocentric solar ecliptic (GSE) and (as a function of tilt angle) in solar magnetic (SM) coordinates. Average geocentric distances to the magnetopause for the 1972–1973 solar wind conditions (density 9.4 cm?3, velocity 450 km s?1) are 8.8 RE in the sunward direction, 14.7 RE in the dusk direction, 13.4 RE in the dawn direction and 13.7 RE in the direction normal to the ecliptic plane. The magnetopause surface is tilted by 6.6° ± 2° in a direction consistent with that expected from the aberration effect of the radial solar wind. Our data suggest that the solar wind plasma density and the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) orientation affect the distance to the polar magnetopause, larger distances corresponding to higher plasma density and southward fields. Our best-fit magnetopause surface shows larger geocentric distances than predicted by the model of Choe et al. [Planet Space Sci. 21, 485 (1973).] normalised to the same solar wind pressure.  相似文献

Simultaneous measurements of the upper mesospheric NaD and OH(8,3) band emissions by meridional scanning photometers, and the OI 5577 Å, O2 Atmospheric band at 8645 Å, NaD and OH(8,3) band emissions by multi-channel tilting filter type zenith photometers have been carried out at Cachoeira Paulista (22.7°S, 45.0°W), Brazil. On two nights during the period May–August 1983, the meridional scanning observations showed horizontal intensity gradients and phase propagations. The nocturnal intensity variations on one of these occasions 13–14 June 1983, which was a magnetically disturbed night with 4 ?kp? 8, also showed vertical phase propagation. In this paper, we present these observations and discuss the possible effects of the horizontal wind system and of gravity wave propagation.  相似文献

The discovery of a flare star (R.A. (1950)=6h43m6s.07, Decl.(1950)=?16°45′24″) located about 6 arc min south of Sirius is reported. During photometric observations on the night of 13 January, 1982, using the 102 cm telescope at Kavalur, India, the star was seen to brighten by 2.55 mag. inV band over a duration of about 200 s. Observations on this object for a duration of about 10.5 hr spread over seven more nights indicate the star to be variable. The results of these observations are presented.  相似文献

We analyze the peculiar velocity field for 2400 flat spiral galaxies selected from an infrared sky survey (2MFGC). The distances to the galaxies have been determined from the Tully-Fisher relation in the photometric J band with a dispersion of 0m.45. The bulk motion of this sample relative to the cosmic microwave background (3K) frame has an amplitude of 199 ± 37 km s?1 in the direction l = 290° ± 11°, b = +1° ± 9°. The amplitude of the dipole motion tends to decrease with distance in accordance with the expected convergence of bulk flows in the 3K frame. We believe that external massive attractors similar to the Shapley cluster concentration are responsible for ~60% of the local flow velocity in the z = 0.03 volume.  相似文献

Energetic electron injection events result in the arrival of loss-cone distributions of electrons at energies of a few keV close to the plasmapause at local midnight. These distributions favour the growth of strong electrostatic waves with some conversion to electromagnetic nonthermal continuum emissions near to the geomagnetic equator.GEOS2 located at the geostationary orbit (L = 6.6, 3.3° South) has observed these continuum emissions for a number of electron injection events. Their unique frequency structure provides a measurement of the geomagnetic field strength at the source and hence its radial position, while direction finding measurements at GEOS2 complete the source location determination.Measurements of source locations as a function of time after the start of an electron injection event, yield typical inwards motions of 1REh?1. In this way the emissions provide a remote sensing of the plasmapause location from the geostationary orbit.  相似文献

Fabry-Perot interferometer measurements of Doppler shifts and widths of the 630.0 nm nightglow line have been used to determine the neutral winds and temperatures in the equatorial thermosphere over Natal, Brazil during August–September 1982. During this period, in the early night (2130 U.T.) the average value of the horizontal wind vector was 95 m s?1 at 100° azimuth, and the temperature varied from a low of 950 K during geomagnetically quiet conditions to a high of ~ 1400 K during a storm (6 September). The meridional winds were small, ?, 50 m s?1, and the eastward zonal winds reached a maximum value 1–3 h after sunset, in qualitative agreement with TGCM predictions. On 26 August, an observed persistent convergence in the horizontal meridional flow was accompanied by a downward vertical velocity and an increase in the thermospheric temperature measured overhead. Oscillations with periods of 40–45 min in both the zonal and vertical wind velocities were observed during the geomagnetic storm of 6 September, suggesting gravity wave modulation of the equatorial thermospheric flow.  相似文献

Explorer 45 traversed the plasmapause (determined approximately via the saturation of the d.c. electric field experiment) at near-equatorial latitudes on field lines which were crossed by Ariel 4 (~600km altitude) near dusk in May 1972 and on field lines which were crossed by Isis II (~1400km altitude) near midnight in December 1971 and January 1972. Many examples were found in which the field line through the near-equatorial plasmapause was traversed by Explorer 45 within one hour local time and one hour universal time of Ariel and Isis crossings of the same L coordinate. For the coincident passes near dusk, the RF electron density probe on Ariel detected electron density depletions near the plasmapause L coordinates when Ariel was in darkness. When the Ariel passes were in sunlight, however, electron depletions were not discernable near the plasmapause field line. On the selected near-midnight passes of Isis II, electron density depressions were typically detected (via the topside sounder) near the plasmapause L coordinate. The dusk Ariel electron density profiles are observed to reflect O+ density variations. Even at the high altitude of Isis near midnight, O+ is found to be the dominant ion in the trough region whereas H+ is dominant at lower latitudes as is evident from the measured electron density scale heights. In neither local time sector was it possible to single out a distinctive topside ionosphere feature as an indicator of the plasmapause field line as identified near the equator. At both local times the equator-determined plasmapause L coordinate showed a tendency to lay equatorward of the trough minimum.  相似文献

The three-dimensional Ogorodnikov-Milne model was used to investigate the local velocity field on the basis of the tangential velocities of more than 53 000 red giants which were identified as most probable Red Clump members from the Tycho-2 catalog. Galactic rotation parameters were determined for two star groups at the galactic latitudes |b| < 30° and |b| ≥ 30°. The galactic rotation of the first star group was found to have some peculiarities characterized by the statistically significant parameters of contraction (K = ?6.3 ± 1.1 km s?1 kpc?1) and phase shift (? = 6.9° ± 0.6°) in the Ogorodnikov-Miln model. The vertex deflection and the semiaxes of peculiar velocity ellipsoid were determined for both star groups together with the components of the Sun’s motion with respect to these groups. The greatest distinction between two groups manifests itself in the vertex deflection, which is equal to 5.9° ± 0.7° at |b| < 30° and 0.1° ± 0.6° at |b| ≥ 30°.  相似文献

The results of observations of the Orionid meteor shower are given in the period from 2006 to 2008. Observations were carried out using a highly sensitive camera FAVOR (FAst Variability Optical Registrator) a limiting magnitude of above +11.0m (for stars) and a field of view of 18° × 20°. Over the period of the shower from October 2 to November 7, 2006–2008, there were 3713 meteors. 449 of these meteors were associated with the Orionid meteor shower. The distributions of Orionid meteors by the stellar magnitude is presented. It turned out that most of meteors (65%) of this shower have a brightness of +5.0m-+7.0m. On each night of observation the index of meteor activity was calculated for Orionids.  相似文献

We investigated the kinematics of ionized gas in an extended (20°×15°) region containing the X-ray Superbubble in Cygnus with the aim of finding the shell swept up by a strong wind from Cyg OB2. Hα observations were carried out with high angular and spectral resolutions using a Fabry-Perot interferometer attached to the 125-cm telescope at the Crimean Observatory of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute. We detected high-velocity gas motions, which could result from the expansion of the hypothetical shell at a velocity of 25–50 km s?1. Given the number of OB stars increased by Knödlseder (2000) by an order of magnitude, Cyg OB2 is shown to possess a wind that is strong enough [L w ? (1–2) × 1039 erg s?1] to produce a shell comparable in size to the X-ray Superbubble and to a giant system of optical filaments. Based on our measurements and on X-ray and infrared observations, we discuss possible observational manifestations of the shell swept up by the wind.  相似文献

All of the OGO-5 light ion density measurements (covering the period from March 1968 to May 1969) obtained from the Lockheed Light Ion Mass Spectrometer were used to determine the average global topology of the equatorial plasmasphere density distribution. The variation of the light ion equatorial density at L?3.2 with local time was deduced by determining the average density observed within one hour of a specific local time and within 0.1 of a given L coordinate. The average H+ density showed a semidiurnal variation with peaks near noon and midnight. The He+ observations also revealed multiple peaks throughout the day but with smaller amplitudes than those of H+. At L>3.2 plasma trough conditions increase the scatter of densities. The average variation of the H+ density with L within the plasmasphere is found to be steepest near midnight and can be least squares fitted equally well to either an exponential variation exp (?bL) where b is between 0.85 and 1.5 or to a power law L?a where a varies from 3.2 to 5.  相似文献

Brown's results (1964, 1968) concerning the distribution of orientation angles of spiral galaxies in different areas of the sky are discussed and a graphical statistical test is applied. The deviations from randomness are found to be significant. It seems difficult to ascribe them to selection effects. It is shown that the observed distributions can be explained, if the angular momenta in greater aggregations of galaxies are distributed at random on congruent precession cones with parallel axes. This hypothesis may apply if the following cosmological conditions hold:
  1. the matter in the universe was reheated after the recombination at an epoch, when most of the angular momentum was already transferred to the protogalaxies by tidal interaction, and the angular momenta of the protogalaxies in greater aggregations were predominantly parallel at the epoch of reheating;
  2. the ‘magnetic’ model of the universe is valid and the ‘urfield’ was uniform at least at the epoch of reheating. Under these assumptions, the ‘frozen-in’ magnetic field will give rise to forces, which — apart from slowing down the rotation of the protogalaxies — will cause precession of their angular momenta around the direction of the ‘urfield’.
For a rigid body approximation the equations of motion are derived and solved numerically. Approximate analytic solutions are also given. The precession period is in the range of 104 to 108 yr for plausible values of the parameters of the problem. The observed distributions in the four regions of the sky investigated are — via the precession hypothesis — compatible with a direction of the ‘urfield’ indicated by the work of Sofueet al. (1969) and Reinhardt and Thiel (1970) ofl II≈280°,b II≈+30° tol II≈100°,b II≈?30°.  相似文献

Nitric oxide is formed in the atmosphere through the ionization and dissociation of molecular nitrogen by galactic cosmic rays. One NO molecule is formed for each ion pair produced by cosmic ray ionization. The height-integrated input (day and night) to the lower stratosphere is of the order of 6 × 107 NO molecules cm?2/sec in the auroral zone (geomagnetic latitude Φ ? 60°) during the minimum of the sunspot cycle and 4 × 107 NO molecules cm?2/sec in the subauroral belt and auroral region (Φ? 45°) at the maximum of solar activity. The tropical production is less than 10?7 NO molecules cm?2/sec above 17 km and at the equator the production is only 3 × 106NO molecules cm?2/sec.  相似文献

Identifying the precursors (pre-increases or pre-decreases) of a geomagnetic storm or a Forbush decrease is of great importance since they can forecast and warn of oncoming space weather effects. A wide investigation using 93 events which occurred in the period from 1967 to 2006 with an anisotropy A xy >1.2% has been conducted. Twenty-seven of the events revealed clear signs of precursors and were classified into three categories. Here we present one of the aforementioned groups, including five Forbush decreases (24 June 1980, 28 October 2000, 17 August 2001, 23 April 2002, and 10 May 2002). Apart from hourly cosmic ray intensity data, provided by the worldwide network of neutron monitor stations, data on solar flares, solar wind speed, geomagnetic indices (Kp and Dst), and interplanetary magnetic field were used for the analysis of the examined cosmic ray intensity decreases. The asymptotic longitudinal cosmic ray distribution diagrams were plotted using the “ring of stations” method. Results reveal a long pre-decrease up to 24 hours before the shock arrival in a narrow longitudinal zone from 90° to 180°.  相似文献
