This paper presents a novel platform to study the dampening of water and solute transport in an experimental channel under unsteady flow conditions, where literature data are scarce. We address the question about what could be the smallest size of experimental platform that is useful for research, project studies, and teaching activities and that allows to do rational experiments characterized by small space occupation, short experimental duration, high measurement precision, high quality and reproducible experimental curves, low water and energy consumption, and the possibility to test a large variety of hydrograph scenarios. Whereas large scale hydraulic laboratories have focused their studies on sediment transport, our platform deals with solute transport. The objectives of our study are (a) building a platform that allows to do rational experiments, (b) enriching the lack of experimental data concerning water and solute transport under unsteady state conditions, and (c) studying the dampening of water and solute transport. We studied solute transport in a channel with lateral gain and lateral loss under different experimental configurations, and we show how the same lateral loss flow event can lead to different lateral loss mass repartitions under different configurations. In order to characterize water and solute dampening between the input and the output of the channel, we calculate dampening ratios based on peak coordinates of time flow curves and time mass curves and that express the decrease of peak amplitude and the increase of peak occurrence time between the input and output curves. Finally, we use a solute transport model coupling the diffusive wave equation for water transfer and the advection–diffusion equation for solute transport in order to simulate the experimental data. The simulations are quite good with a Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency NSE > 0.98 for water transfer and 0.84 < NSE < 0.97 for solute transport. This platform could serve hydrological modellers because it offers a variety of measured parameters (flow, water height, and solute concentration), at a fine time step under unsteady flow conditions.  相似文献

The quantification of diffuse input loads of nutrients to rivers is a challenge due to limited observed data. This study aimed to develop a simple model that can relate in-stream nutrient concentrations due to diffuse sources with land cover categories within a catchment affecting a river reach. A previously developed point-diffuse model was used to distinguish the diffuse nutrient signature within South African Department of Water Affairs historical monitoring flow and water quality data for selected river gauges. The diffuse signature was related to land cover categories within respective catchments using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and influential land cover categories were used to construct land cover models relating land cover categories with in-stream nutrient concentrations. Generally, the land cover categories affecting diffuse signatures of nutrients as indicated by PCA were expected. Using land cover information, the developed land cover models performed well in re-creating the diffuse in-stream nutrient signature as determined by the point-diffuse model.  相似文献

Water pollution from diffuse sources is a problem of increasing concern. Efforts to control diffuse pollution have been confined mainly to agricultural land and forests. Little attention has been paid to sources of diffuse pollution from urban areas. A diffuse nitrate modelling tool (DNMT) has been developed for modelling the fate of nitrate in urban areas. This tool works at the catchment scale and has a modular structure that consists of three components: the hydrological module, the nitrogen cycle module and the nitrate transport module. The hydrological model describes the possible flow pathways. The nitrogen cycle model accounts for the mass balance of nitrate and calculates the amount of nitrate for potential loss. The nitrate transport module simulates the movement of nitrate within and from the soil to the receiving water. This paper demonstrates the development of the tool and its application in the White Cart Water catchment. This implementation of the tool shows that it has a good capability for simulating the fate of nitrate in urban catchments. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Influence of injection conditions on field tracer experiments   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Calibration of ground water transport models is often performed using results of field tracer experiments. However, little attention is usually paid to the influence, on resulting breakthrough curves, of injection conditions and well-aquifer interactions, more particularly of the influence of the possible trapping of the tracer in the injection wellbore. Recently, a new mathematical and numerical approach has been developed to model injection conditions and well-aquifer interactions in a very accurate way. Using an analytical solution derived from this model, a detailed analysis is made of the evolution of the tracer input function in the aquifer. By varying injection conditions from one simulation to another, synthetic breakthrough curves are generated with the SUFT3D ground water flow and transport finite-element simulator. These tests show clearly that the shape of the breakthrough curves can be dramatically affected by injection conditions. Using generated breakthrough curves as "actual" field results, a calibration of hydrodispersive parameters is performed, neglecting the influence of injection conditions. This shows that neglecting the influence of actual injection conditions can lead to (1) errors on fitted parameters and (2) misleading identification of the active transport processes. Conclusions and guidelines are drawn in terms of proposed methodologies for better controlling the tracer injection in the field, in order to minimize risk of misinterpretation of results.  相似文献

Sources and transport processes of As, Cu, Cd and Pb were studied in different environmental compartments of Deception Island, an active volcano in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. Element concentrations in fresh water samples are consistent with the lowest values reported elsewhere in Antarctica. Interestingly, higher concentration values of As were found in samples collected in or near spring water courses and its transport may be related with processes of lixiviation in underground waters. While in saline waters Cu and Pb had important punctual sources, concentration values for Cd were consistently high pointing to the existence of a natural and diffuse source possibly related with the hydrothermal activity. The high Si/Al ratio, low carbon content, and a non-significant anthropogenic heavy metal input may explain the surprisingly homogeneous heavy metal content found in sediment samples.  相似文献

Monte Carlo method applied to modeling copper transport in river sediments   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) methodology has been applied to explain the variability of parameters for pollutant transport and fate modeling. In this study, the MCS method was used to evaluate the transport and fate of copper in the sediment of the Tibagi River sub-basin tributaries, Southern Brazil. The statistical distribution of the variables was described by a dataset obtained for copper concentration using sequential extraction, organic matter (OM) amount, and pH. The proposed stochastic spatial model for the copper transport in the river sediment was discussed and implemented by the MCS technique using the MatLab 7.3? mathematical software tool. In order to test some hypotheses, the sediment and the water column in the river ecosystem were considered as compartments. The proposed stochastic spatial model makes it possible to predict copper mobility and associated risks as a function of the organic matter input into aquatic systems. The metal mobility can increase with the OM posing a rising environmental risk.  相似文献

The available observational data on the pollution of tributaries and areas of the Caspian Sea by petroleum hydrocarbons and products are examined. The possible petroleum input from sources in the sea is assessed using up-to-date data of satellite observations of sea surface pollution by oil films. The hydroecological CNPSi-model is applied to studying water pollution processes by petroleum hydrocarbons in ten areas chosen in the Caspian Sea and the subsequent biodegradation of those pollutants. The model calculations of the within-year dynamics of petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations use mean annual observational data on within-year variations in water mediium characteristics (water temperature, light intensity, and transparency), as well as the morphometric parameters of sea areas (the area, mean depth, and water volumes). The characteristics of water exchange between the areas were evaluated using a hydrodynamic model. The model calculations were used to characterize the within-year variations in petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations, the biomasses of petroleum-oxidizing bacteria, the characteristics of their oxidation activity and bioproduction, and the internal fluxes of petroleum hydrocarbons (their input from various sources, horizontal and vertical transport, and biotransformation) in different sea areas. Calculation results were used to compile annual balances for the processes of input and consumption of petroleum hydrocarbons in the chosen and aggregated sea areas.  相似文献

Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas that is emitted from paddy fields, and the large CH4 fluxes represent a worldwide issue for the rice production eco-compatibility. In this work a model is proposed to investigate the role of water flows on CH4 emissions from flooded paddy soils. The model is based on a system of partial differential mass balance equations of the chemical species affecting CH4 fate, and water flows are modeled by the Darcy equation. Moreover, in order to properly model the dynamics of CH4, a number of physico-chemical processes and features not included in currently available CH4 emission models are considered: paddy soil stratigraphy; nutrient adsorption and root water uptake; gas transport and respiration within root aerenchyma compartment. The proposed model allows to simulate the spatio-temporal dynamics of chemical compounds within paddy soil as well as to quantify the influence of different processes on nutrient input/output budgets. Simulations without water flow have shown a considerable overestimation of CH4 emissions due to a different spatio-temporal dynamics of dissolved organic matter (DOC – source of energy for CH4 production). In particular, when water fluxes have not been modeled the overestimation can reach 54%, 41% and 67% of daily minimum, daily maximum, and total over the whole growing season CH4 emission, respectively. Moreover, the model results suggest that roots influence CH4 dynamics principally due to their nutrient uptake, while root effect on advective flow plays a minor role. Finally, the analysis of CH4 transport fluxes has shown the limiting effect of upward dispersive transport fluxes on the downward CH4 percolation.  相似文献

Mathematical modeling is used to study the conditions of natural biotransformation of biogenic element compounds (containing C, N, P, Si) in five areas within Aniva Bay. The input data for the model are evaluated with the use of GIS “Sakhalin Shelf” and the available reference literature on the bay oceanography. Water masses that transferred through the boundaries between the areas were evaluated based on the values of water level, river runoff, atmospheric precipitation, evaporation, and the volume of water in the bay, all of which vary as a result of water heating. The model was used to evaluate annual variations in the concentrations of organic and mineral fractions of these elements and the biomasses of planktonic organisms for the five areas in the bay. Modeling results also allowed the assessment of biogenic substance input with river runoff into Lososei Bay. Based on the internal fluxes of substances, the monthly and annual aquatic animal production was evaluated.  相似文献

Constructed wetlands are being utilized worldwide to effectively reduce excess nutrients in agricultural runoff and wastewater. Despite their frequency, a multi‐dimensional, physically based, spatially distributed modelling approach has rarely been applied for flow and solute transport in treatment wetlands. This article presents a two‐dimensional hydrodynamic and solute transport modelling of a large‐scaled, subtropical, free water surface constructed wetland of about 8 km2 in the Everglades of Florida, USA. In this study, MIKE 21 was adopted as the basic model framework. Field monitoring of the time series hydrological and chloride data, as well as spatially distributed data such as bathymetry and vegetation distribution, provided the necessary model input and testing data. Simulated water level profiles were in good agreement with the spatio‐temporal variations of measured ones. On average, the root‐mean‐square error of model calibration on annual water level fluctuations was 0·09 m. Manning's roughness coefficients for the dense emergent and submerged aquatic vegetation areas, which were estimated as a function of vegetation type, ranged from 0·67 to 1·0 and 0·12 to 0·15 s/m1/3, respectively. The solute transport model calibration for four monitoring sites agreed well with the measured annual variations in chloride concentration with an average percent model error of about 15%. The longitudinal dispersivity was estimated to be about 2 m and was more than an order of magnitude higher than the transverse one. This study is expected to play the role of a stepping stone for future modelling efforts on the development and application of more advanced flow and transport models applicable to a variety of constructed wetland systems, as well as to the Everglades stormwater treatment areas in operation or in preparation. The mass transport velocity in a two-layer system is studied theoretically. The wave motion is driven by a periodic pressure load on the free water surface, and mud in the lower layer is described by a power-law rheological model. Perturbation analysis is performed to the second order to find the mean Eulerian velocity. A numerical iteration method is employed to solve the non-linear governing equation at the leading order. The influence of rheological properties on fluid motion characteristics including the flow field, the surface displacement, the mass transport velocity, and the net discharge rates are investigated based on theoretical results. Theoretical analysis shows that under the action of interfacial shearing, a recirculation structure may appear near the interface in the upper water layer. A higher mass transport velocity at the interface does not necessarily mean a higher discharge rate for a pseudo-plastic fluid mud.  相似文献

A simple process‐based approach to predict regional‐scale loading of nitrate at the water table was implemented in a GIS for Great Britain. This links a nitrate input function, unsaturated zone thickness, and lithologically dependent rate of nitrate unsaturated zone travel to estimate arrival time of nitrate at the water table. The nitrate input function is the loading at the base of the soil and has been validated using unsaturated zone porewater profiles. The unsaturated zone thickness uses groundwater levels based on regional‐scale observations infilled by interpolated river base levels. Estimates of the rate of unsaturated zone travel are attributed from regional‐scale hydrogeological mapping. The results indicate that peak nitrate loading may have already arrived at the water table for many aquifers, but that it has not where the unsaturated zone is relatively thick There are contrasting outcomes for the two main aquifers which have similar unsaturated zone velocities, the predominantly low relief Permo‐Triassic sandstones, and the Chalk, which forms significant topographic features. For about 60% of the Chalk, the peak input has not yet reached the water table and will continue to arrive over the next 60 years. The methodology is readily transferable and provides a robust method for estimating peak arrival time for any diffuse conservative pollutant where an input function can be defined at a regional scale and requires only depth to groundwater and a hydrogeological classification. The methodology is extendable in that if additional information is available this can easily be incorporated into the model scheme. British Geology Survey © NERC 2011. An important quantity in groundwater protection is the residence time of water in an aquifer. It relates to both the travel time of a pollutant to arrive at a well and the time span required for self-purification of a polluted aquifer after removal of pollutant inputs. Time scales for aquifers can be gained from artificial tracer experiments or from environmental tracer data, the latter offering the only realistic alternative if time scales of years or decades have to be taken into account.

Different tracers show different time scales due to their different transport mechanisms especially in the unsaturated zone. While solute tracers are moved advectively with the seepage water, gas tracers pass the unsaturated zone diffusively through the air phase. Depending on the properties of the unsaturated zone (hydraulic properties, thickness) this difference in behavior can be used to separate the subsurface transport process into the unsaturated and the saturated parts.

In a field study in Germany, SF6 and 3H were used as environmental tracers. Both have a relatively well-known input function. Interpretation of data from observation wells by a box model approach led to spatially and temporally varying residence times. This was an indication that the influence of the unsaturated zone could not be neglected. While the gas tracer SF6 shows only residence times in the saturated zone, the tracer 3H reflects the whole travel time of water including both the unsaturated and saturated zones. Using a one-dimensional plug-flow model for the unsaturated zone combined with a detailed two-dimensional flow and transport model for the saturated zone leads to a holistic and consistent interpretation of the measured tracer concentrations. The observed pattern of old water under thick loess cover and younger water under areas where the fractured basalt aquifer crops out is reproduced after adjusting only two parameters: the effective porosity of the saturated aquifer and the product of field capacity and thickness of the unsaturated zone. While the effective porosity of the saturated zone is adjusted by means of the SF6 data, the field capacity of the loess layer is adjusted by means of the 3H observations. The thickness of the unsaturated zone is deduced from geological and pedological maps. All flow data are obtained from a calibrated flow model, which is based on geological data, observed heads and pumping tests only.

The transport model for the saturated zone was calibrated by fitting the porosity by means of gaseous tracer concentrations (SF6). The combined saturated–unsaturated zone model was then calibrated by fitting the field capacity of the unsaturated zone by means of 3H concentrations. With this model it was possible to verify the observed NO3 concentrations at the drinking water wells and to develop predictions for their future development under various scenarios of fertilizer input reduction in specific areas.  相似文献

Analytical solutions are presented for solute transport in rivers including the effects of transient storage and first order decay. The solute transport model considers an advection–dispersion equation for transport in the main channel linked to a first order mass exchange between the main channel and the transient storage zones. In case of a conservative tracer, it is shown that different analytical solutions presented in the literature are mathematically identical. For non-conservative solutes, first order decay reactions are considered with different reaction rate coefficients in the main river channel and in the dead zones. New analytical solutions are presented for different boundary conditions, i.e. instantaneous injection in an infinite river reach, and variable concentration time series input in a semi-infinite river reach. The correctness and accuracy of the analytical solutions is verified by comparison with the OTIS numerical model. The results of analytical and numerical approaches compare favourably and small differences can be attributed to the influence of boundary conditions. It is concluded that the presented analytical solutions for solute transport in rivers with transient storage and solute decay are accurate and correct, and can be usefully applied for analyses of tracer experiments and transport characteristics in rivers with mass exchange in dead zones.  相似文献

Computerized sediment transport models are frequently employed to quantitatively simulate the movement of sediment materials in rivers. In spite of the deterministic nature of the models, the outputs are subject to uncertainty due to the inherent variability of many input parameters in time and in space, along with the lack of complete understanding of the involved processes. The commonly used first-order method for sensitivity and uncertainty analyses is to approximate a model by linear expansion at a selected point. Conclusions from the first-order method could be of limited use if the model responses drastically vary at different points in parameter space. To obtain the global sensitivity and uncertainty features of a sediment transport model over a larger input parameter space, the Latin hypercubic sampling technique along with regression procedures were employed. For the purpose of illustrating the methodologies, the computer model HEC2-SR was selected in this study. Through an example application, the results about the parameters sensitivity and uncertainty of water surface, bed elevation and sediment discharge were discussed.  相似文献

A marginal revenue equilibrium model for spatial water allocation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The outside water is transported into the water-shorted area. It is allocated among many sub-areas that composed the water-shorted area, in order to maximize the total benefit from the input water for the areas. This paper presents a model for spatial water allocation based on the marginal revenue of water utilization, taking the six southern districts of Hebei Province as an example.  相似文献

The link between groundwater and surface hydrology in a small headwater drainage basin in the zone of glacial deposition of southern Ontario south of the Precambrian Shield was examined for two years. The basin is situated in a discharge zone of a regional aquifer and contains a small treed spring-fed swamp. The swamp exists because of the groundwater and has little effect on the maintenance of streamflow. Groundwater input to the swamp is an order of magnitude larger than precipitation. Groundwater of local and regional origin passes through the swamp by two routes: surface streamlets, where groundwater that emerges at specific seepage points in the swamp is conveyed over the ground surface with little interaction with the swamp itself, and by diffuse seepage in the swamp and through the bed of the stream. While the diffuse seepage input is the smaller component of groundwater it maintains the swamp's saturation. Groundwater input to the swamp from the specific seepage points and diffuse flow varies little over a year; therefore the saturation of the swamp and baseflow from the basin display little seasonal variation compared to other wetland types. The existence of the valley bottom in the headwater basin alters the seasonal and storm hydrology and is important to biogeochemical transformation of emerging groundwater.  相似文献
