Sequences of line-of-sight (LOS) magnetograms recorded by the Michelson Doppler Imager are used to quantitatively characterize photospheric magnetic structure and evolution in three active regions that rotated across the Sun??s disk during the Whole Heliosphere Interval (WHI), in an attempt to relate the photospheric magnetic properties of these active regions to flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Several approaches are used in our analysis, on scales ranging from whole active regions, to magnetic features, to supergranular scales, and, finally, to individual pixels. We calculated several parameterizations of magnetic structure and evolution that have previously been associated with flare and CME activity, including total unsigned magnetic flux, magnetic flux near polarity-inversion lines, amount of canceled flux, the ??proxy Poynting flux,?? and helicity flux. To catalog flare events, we used flare lists derived from both GOES and RHESSI observations. By most such measures, AR 10988 should have been the most flare- and CME-productive active region, and AR 10989 the least. Observations, however, were not consistent with this expectation: ARs 10988 and 10989 produced similar numbers of flares, and AR 10989 also produced a few CMEs. These results highlight present limitations of statistics-based flare and CME forecasting tools that rely upon line-of-sight photospheric magnetic data alone.  相似文献

Super-active region NOAA 6555 was highly flare productive during the period March 21st–27th, 1991 of its disk passage. We have st udied its chromospheric activity using high spatial resolution Hα filtergrams taken at Udaipur along with MSFC vector magnetograms. A possible relationship of flare productivity and the variation in shear has been explored. Flares were generally seen in those subareas of the active region which possessed closed magnetic field configuration, whereas only minor flares and/or surges occurred in subareas showing open magnetic field configuration. Physical mechanisms responsible for the observed surges are also discussed.  相似文献

Three homologous coronal mass ejections (CMEs) occurred on 5, 12 and 16 May 1997 from the single magnetic polarity inversion line (PIL) of AR8038. The three events together provide STEREO-like quadrature views of the 12 May 1997 CME and EIT double dimming. The recurrent CMEs with the nearly identical post-CME potential state and the ‘sigmoid to arcade to sigmoid’ transformations indicate a repeatable store?–?release?–?restore process of the free energy. How was the free magnetic energy re-introduced to the potential state corona after each release in this decaying active region? Making use of the known time interval bounded by the adjacent homologous CMEs, we made the following measures. The unsigned magnetic flux of AR8038, ΦAR, decreased by approximately 18% during 66 h, while the unsigned flux, ΦPIL, in a Gaussian-weighted PIL-region containing the flare site increased by about 50% during 36 hrs prior to the C1.3 flare on 12 May 1997. The significant increase of ΦPIL demonstrates the magnetic gradient increase and the build-up of free energy in the PIL-region during the time leading to the eruption. Fourier local correlation tracking (FLCT) flow speed in AR8038 ranges from 0 to 292.8 m?s?1 with a mean value of 63.2 m?s?1. The flow field contains a persistent converging flow towards the flaring PIL and an effective shear flow distributed in the AR. Minor angular motions were found. An integrated proxy Poynting flux S h estimates the energy input to the corona to be on the order of 1.15×1032 erg during the 66 hrs before the C1.3 flare. It suggests that sufficient energy for a flare/CME can be introduced to the corona on the order of several days by the flows deduced from photospheric magnetic field motions in this small decaying active region.  相似文献

We study the magnetic structure of five well-known active regions that produced great flares (X5 or larger). The six flares under investigation are the X12 flare on 1991 June 9 in AR 6659, the X5.7 flare on 2000 July 14 in AR 9077, the X5.6 flare on 2001 April 6 in AR 9415, the X5.3 flare on 2001 August 25 in AR 9591, the X17 flare on 2003 October 28 and the X10 flare on 2003 October 29, both in AR 10486. The last five events had corresponding LASCO observations and were all associated with Halo CMEs. We analyzed vector magne-tograms from Big Bear Solar Observatory, Huairou Solar Observing Station, Marshall Space Right Center and Mees Solar Observatory. In particular, we studied the magnetic gradient derived from line-of-sight magnetograms and magnetic shear derived from vector magne-tograms, and found an apparent correlation between these two parameters at a level of about 90%. We found that the magnetic gradient could be a better proxy than the shear for predicting where a major flare might occur: all six flares occurred in neutral lines with maximum gradient. The mean gradient of the flaring neutral lines ranges from 0.14 to 0.50 G km-1, 2.3 to 8 times the average value for all the neutral lines in the active regions. If we use magnetic shear as the proxy, the flaring neutral line in at least one, possibly two, of the six events would be mis-identified.  相似文献

In this paper we present a quantitative evaluation of the shear in the magnetic field along the neutral line in an active region during an epoch of flare activity. We define shear as the angular difference in the photosphere between the potential magnetic field, which fits the boundary conditions imposed by the observed line-of-sight field, and the observed magnetic field. For the active region studied, this angular difference (shear) is non-uniform along the neutral line with maxima occurring at the locations of repeated flare onsets. We suggest that continued magnetic evolution causes the field's maximum shear to exceed a critical value of shear, resulting in a flare around the site of maximum shear. Evidently, the field at the site of the flare must relax to a state of shear somewhat below the critical value (but still far from potential), with subsequent evolution returning the field to the critical threshold. We draw this inference because several flares occurred at sites of maximum photospheric shear which were persistent in location.NOAA, Boulder, Colorado.  相似文献

In this study, photospheric vector magnetograms obtained with the Synoptic Optical Long-term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) survey are used as boundary conditions to model three-dimensional nonlinear force-free (NLFF) coronal magnetic fields as a sequence of NLFF equilibria in spherical geometry. We study the coronal magnetic field structure inside an active region and its temporal evolution. We compare the magnetic field configuration obtained from NLFF extrapolation before and after the flaring event in active region (AR) 11117 and its surroundings observed on 27 October 2010, and we also compare the magnetic field topologies and the magnetic energy densities and study the connectivities between AR 11117 and its surroundings. During the investigated time period, we estimate the change in free magnetic energy from before to after the flare to be 1.74×1032?erg, which represents about 13.5?% of the NLFF magnetic energy before the flare. In this study, we find that electric currents from AR 11117 to its surroundings were disrupted after the flare.  相似文献

The active region NOAA 11158 produced the first X-class flare of Solar Cycle 24, an X2.2 flare at 01:44 UT on 15 February 2011. The Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) instrument on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) satellite produces 12-minute, 0.5′′ pixel?1 vector magnetograms. Here we analyze a series of these data covering a 12-hour interval centered at the time of this flare. We describe the spatial distributions of the photospheric magnetic changes associated with the flare, including the abrupt changes in the field vector, vertical electric current and Lorentz-force vector acting on the solar interior. We also describe these parameters’ temporal evolution. The abrupt magnetic changes were concentrated near the neutral line and in two neighboring sunspots. Near the neutral line, the field vectors became stronger and more horizontal during the flare and the shear increased. This was due to an increase in strength of the horizontal field components near the neutral line, most significant in the horizontal component parallel to the neutral line but the perpendicular component also increased in strength. The vertical component did not show a significant, permanent overall change at the neutral line. The increase in field strength at the neutral line was accompanied by a compensating decrease in field strength in the surrounding volume. In the two sunspots near the neutral line the integrated azimuthal field abruptly decreased during the flare but this change was permanent in only one of the spots. There was a large, abrupt, downward vertical Lorentz-force change acting on the solar interior during the flare, consistent with results of past analyses and recent theoretical work. The horizontal Lorentz force acted in opposite directions along each side of neutral line, with the two sunspots at each end subject to abrupt torsional forces relaxing their magnetic twist. These shearing forces were consistent with a contraction of field and decrease of shear near the neutral line, whereas the field itself became more sheared as a result of the field collapsing towards the neutral line from the surrounding volume. The Lorentz forces acting on the atmospheric volume above the photosphere were equal and opposite.  相似文献

The powerful flare 4B/X17.2 of October 28, 2003 in the NOAA 10486 active region is studied by using Hα filtergrams. This active region had a complicated βγδ magnetic configuration and a sigmoidal pattern of the polarity inversion line, it had the largest AR area in the cycle 23. Local filaments, loops, and systems of loops were also observed in the AR. The light curves obtained for all flare knots clearly reveal two stages in their evolution. The first stage is the pre-flare one, when the accumulation of the nonpotential magnetic energy (the energy of electric currents) comes to an end and the situation becomes favorable for the realization of the second period. The intensity of flare knots (except one knot) changed slightly and slowly, and some structure features (twists and connections) became more active. By the end of the first stage a new magnetic flux emerged and a system of interrelated filaments and loops (IFL) was formed at the center of the AR as well as at its periphery. New flare knots appeared about the main S-like filament. The second flare stage began at about 11:02 UT with a dramatic increase of the intensity and area of all flare knots and the formation of new knots. In a space of 8 min the major part of the AR around the main filament was covered with flare emission which fluctuated at its maximum period. The intensity of all knots was observed to drop slowly after the maximum, at the decay phase. As the IFL system extended over the entire AR, the magnetic field energy accumulated in it was released in the form of powerful electromagnetic and corpuscular emission by way of magnetic reconnection.  相似文献

Based on a topological model for the magnetic field of a solar active region (AR), we suggest a criterion for the existence of magnetic null points on the separators in the corona. With the problem of predicting solar flares in mind, we have revealed a model parameter whose decrease means that the AR evolves toward a major eruptive flare. We analyze the magnetic field evolution for AR 9077 within two days before the Bastille Day flare on July 14, 2000. The coronal conditions are shown to have become more favorable for magnetic reconnection, which led to a 3B/X5.7 eruptive flare.  相似文献

The properties of the flaring sites in the active region NOAA 6555 and 6659 are presented in this paper. Although, several locations of these active regions displayed high magnetic shear, the X-class flares occurred only at one of them. Our investigations show that these locations are characterized by the `crossing' of magnetic and velocity field neutral lines. Based on a new parameter to define the stressed magnetic fields, we show that some of these flaring locations possessed highly stressed magnetic field which disappeared after the flare. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Quasi-separatrix layer, also called as QSL, is a region where magnetic connectivity changes drastically, and mostly well coincides with the location of flare ribbons in observations. The research on the relations of this topological structure with the 3-dimensional magnetic reconnection, and solar flares has attracted more and more attention. In this paper, using the theory of QSL we investigate a C5.7 classical two-ribbon solar flare (event 1) which occurred at AR11384 on 2011 December 26, and an M6.5 solar flare (event 2) which occurred at AR12371 on 2015 June 22, respectively. Combining the multi-wavelength data of AIA (Atmospheric Imaging Assembly) and vector magnetogrames of HMI (Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager) onboard SDO (Solar Dynamics Observatory), we extrapolate the coronal magnetic field using the PF (Potential Field) and NLFFF (Nonlinear Force Free Field) models, and calculate the evolution of the AR (Active Region) magnetic free energy. Then, we calculate the logarithmic distribution of Q-factors (magnetic squashing factor) at different heights above the solar photosphere with the results of the PF and NLFFF extrapolations, in order to determine the location of QSL. Afterward, we investigate the evolutionary relation between the QSLs at different heights above the solar photosphere and the flare ribbons observed at the corresponding heights. Finally, we study the multi-wavelength evolution features of the 2 flare events, and obtain by calculation the mean slip velocities of magnetic lines in the event 2 at 304 Å and 335 Å to be 4.6 km s-1 and 6.3 km s-1, respectively. We find that the calculated location of QSL in the chromosphere and corona is in good agreement with the location of flare ribbons at the same height, and the QSLs at different heights have almost the same evolutionary behavior in time as the flare ribbons of the corresponding heights, which highlights the role of QSL in the research of 3D magnetic reconnection and solar flare, and we suggest that the energy release in the flare of event 2 may be triggered by the magnetic reconnection at the place of QSL. We also suggest that the QSL is very important for us to study the essential relation between the 3D and 2D magnetic reconnections.

This paper reviews studies of the relationship between the evolution of vector magnetic fields and the occurrence of major solar flares. Most of the data were obtained by the video magnetograph systems at Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) and Huairou Solar Observatory (HSO). Due to the favorable weather and seeing conditions at both stations, high-resolution vector magnetograph sequences of many active regions that produced major flares during last solar maximum (1989–1993) have been recorded. We have analyzed several sequences of magnetograms to study the evolution of vector magnetic fields of flare productive active regions. The studies have focused on the following three aspects: (1) processes which build up magnetic shear in active regions; (2) the pre-flare magnetic structure of active regions; and (3) changes of magnetic shear immediately preceding and following major flares. We obtained the following results based on above studies: (1) Emerging flux regions (EFRs) play very important roles in the production of complicated photospheric flow patterns, magnetic shear and flares. (2) Although the majority of flares prefer to occur in magnetically sheared regions, many flares occurred in regions without strong photospheric magnetic shear. (3) We found that photospheric magnetic shear increased after all the 6 X-class flares studied by us. We want to emphasize that this discovery is not contradictory to the energy conservation principle, because a flare is a three-dimensional process, and the photosphere only provides a two-dimensional boundary condition. This argument is supported by the fact that if two initial ribbons of a flare are widely separated (which may correspond to a higher-altitude flare), the correlation of the flare with strong magnetic shear is weak; if the two ribbons of a flare are close (which may correspond to a lower-altitude flare), its correlation with the strong shear is strong. (4) We have analyzed 18 additional M-class flares observed by HSO in 1989 and 1990. No detectable shear change was found for all the cases. It is likely that only the most energetic flares can affect the photospheric magnetic topology.  相似文献

The high-resolution H images observed during the decay phase of a long-duration flare on 23 March 1991 are used to study the three-dimensional magnetic field configuration of the active region NOAA 6555. Whereas all the large flares in NOAA 6555 occurred at the location of high magnetic shear and flux emergence, this long-duration flare was observed in the region of low magnetic shear at the photosphere. The H loops activity started soon after the maximum phase of the flare. There were a few long loop at the initial phase of the activity. Some of these were sheared in the chromosphere at an angle of about 45° to the east-west axis. Gradually, an increasing number of shorter loops, oriented along the east-west axis, started appearing. The chromospheric Dopplergrams show blue shifts at the end points of the loops. By using different magnetic field models, we have extrapolated the photospheric magnetograms to chromospheric heights. The magnetic field lines computed by using the potential field model correspond to most of the observed H loops. The height of the H loops were derived by comparing them with the computed field lines. From the temporal evolution of the H loop activity, we derive the negative rate of appearance of H features as a function of height. It is found that the field lines oriented along one of the neutral lines were sheared and low lying. The higher field lines were mostly potential. The paper also outlines a possible scenario for describing the post-flare stage of the observed long-duration flare.  相似文献

The active region NOAA 6555 had several locations of highly sheared magnetic field structure, yet, only one of them was the site for all the five X-class flares during its disk passage in March 1991. The pre-flare observations of high-resolution H filtergrams, vector magnetograms and H Dopplergrams of the 2B/X5.3 flare on 25 March 1991 show that the flaring site was characterized by a new rising emerging flux region (EFR) near the highly sheared magnetic field configuration. The polarity axis of the emerging flux was nearly perpendicular to the pre-existing magnetic neutral line. The location of the EFR was the site of initial brightening in H. The post-flare magnetograms show higher magnetic shear at the flare location compared to the post-flare magnetograms, which might indicate that the EFR was sheared at the time of its emergence. As the new EFR coincided with the occurrence of the flare, we suggest that it might have triggered the observed flare. Observations from Big Bear Solar Observatory and Marshall Space Flight Center also show that there was emergence of new flux at the same location prior to two other X-class flares. We find that out of five observed X-class flares in NOAA 6555, at least in three cases there are clear signatures of flare-related flux emergence. Therefore, it is concluded that EFRs might play an important role in destabilizing the observed sheared magnetic structures leading to large X-class flares of NOAA 6555.  相似文献

This paper studies the evolution of vector magnetic fields in the active region Boulder No. 6233 during an 11-hour observing period and its relationship to an X-3 flare on August 27, 1990.We observed the evolution of magnetic fields, which includes magnetic shear build-up, directly in high-resolution vector magnetograph movies. The magnetic shear is observed to be built up in two ways: (1) shear motion between two poles of opposite magnetic polarities and (2) direct collision of two poles of opposite polarities. When two magnetic elements of opposite polarities are canceling, the field lines are observed to turn from direct connection (potential) to a sheared configuration during the process. An X-3 flare occurred at 2100 UT. The vector magnetic structure showed an unexpected pattern of changes during and after the flare. The shear (defined as the angle between the measured transverse field and the calculated potential field) in the area covering two major footpoints increased rapidly coinciding with the burst of GOES X-ray flux. While the flare faded away in about one hour, the high shear status dropped slowly for the remainder of the observing period. Immediately after the flare, new flux emerged more rapidly and the flow speed of several magnetic elements increased near the flare footpoints. In this active region and a few other flare-productive regions we have studied recently, we always find rapid and complicated flow motions near the sites where flares occur. Photospheric flows appear to be another important factor for the production of flares.  相似文献
