We describe petrographic, electron microprobe, and laser ablation ICP-MS analyses of Mg-rich harzburgite clasts in the Dominion Range 2010 howardites, and conclude that they are xenolithic samples of the vestan mantle. Key chemical and petrologic characteristics of these rocks provide tests for differentiation models. Our results indicate the mantle of Vesta formed through variable degrees of partial melting, which left behind a harzburgite and possibly dunite residuum. The Mg-rich clasts are composed of orthopyroxene and olivine, with minor clinopyroxene, FeNi metal, and distinctive pyroxene–chromite symplectites. We use mineral chemistry to demonstrate the absence of a genetic link between diogenites and the Mg-rich harzburgites. We propose a secondary origin for the formation of symplectites: interaction of silicate and metallic melts during primordial differentiation and core formation. The occurrence of FeNi metal containing ~1.5 wt% Cr within the assemblage indicates a very reducing environment during mantle differentiation (≪IW). Our study suggests that Vesta did not experience complete melting early in its history, and instead supports the formation of a shallow magma ocean.  相似文献

Abstract— Calculations performed using MAGPOX show that no bulk compositions having chondritic Ca/Al ratio and within the range of chondritic Si/Mg ratios can produce the olivine-pigeonite ureilites (which constitute 65% of those for which modal abundances are known) as residues of single-stage equilibrium partial melting. Calcium/aluminum ratios of 2–3.5 × CI are required. In addition, all the ureilites could not have formed from a single composition at various degrees of reduction, because they show no correlation between pigeonite/olivine ratio and mg ratio. Materials with various Al/Mg ratios, ranging from subchondritic to superchondritic, are required. If these materials are primitive (i.e., created by nebular processes rather than planetary igneous processes), they are unknown in the meteorite record. Excess accretion (relative to chondrites) of 5–10 mol% of a high-temperature condensate component, which was itself almost completely depleted in corundum due to early fractionation, could create the necessary compositions. The plausibility that such processes occurred on a parent-body sized scale is difficult to assess. In contrast, lodranites can be produced as residues of ~3–30% equilibrium partial melting of an average ordinary chondritic composition at the appropriate level of reduction. Although many features of ureilites suggest that they are relatively primitive residues produced by low degrees of melting of chondritic materials, and thus resemble lodranites and other groups of primitive achondrites, their predominantly pigeonite + olivine mineralogy remains difficult to explain within this simple scenario.  相似文献

It has been widely believed that the outflows in gamma-ray bursts are jetted and some jets may have structures like ε(θ) ∝ θ^-k. We check the possibility that X-ray flashes come from such jets. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses have shown that this model can reproduce most of the observational features of both X-ray flashes and gamma-ray bursts. Using the usual parameters of gamma-ray bursts, we have carried out numerical calculations for both uniform and nonuniform jets, of their fluxes, spectra and peak energies. It seems that nonuniform jets are more appropriate to these observational properties than uniform jets.We have also shown that in our model the observational ratio of gamma-ray bursts to X-ray flashes is about a few units.  相似文献

One of the most amazing phenomena in astronomy, during the last twenty years, have been cosmic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The duration of these events vary from a few milliseconds to hundreds of seconds. We have never been able to identify the source of these bursts in other wavelengths. These objects have also never been seen in-rays after the initial bursts although there is some very weak statistical evidence that some of the bursts will repeat (Quashnock and Lamb 1993). The standard explanation for these bursts has been that they are somehow related to neutron stars in our own Galaxy. The latest results from the Burst and Transient Source Experiment aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (Fishmanet al. 1994) show clearly that there is no excess concentration of these events (743 bursts) in the Galactic plane. After this, a more promising explanation is that the bursts are related to the Galactic halo or that the origin is extragalactic. In this letter we show that it is very probable that the origin of these events is the QSOs and that the radiation comes from the same synchrotron source as in the other observed wavelengths.  相似文献

We briefly review the status of models of optical flare heating by electron bombardment. We recompute Brown's (1973a) flare model atmospheres using considerably revised radiative loss rates, based on Canfield's (1974b) method applied to , L, and H. Profiles of are computed and compared with observation. The computed profiles agree satisfactorily with those observed during the large 1972 August 7 flare, if spatial and velocity inhomogeneities are assumed. The electron injection rate inferred from is one order of magnitude less than that inferred from hard X-rays, for this event. This may be due to either (1) the neglect of a mechanism that reduces the thick-target electron injection rate or (2) failure to incorporate important radiative loss terms.  相似文献

Various explanations of the bipolar-flow phenomenon in star-forming regions are compared and confronted with the observed facts. It is concluded that stellar-wind interpretations are inconsistent with the constraints. The exotic property of young stellar objects may be their extreme spin which implies strong magnetic fields and vacuum discharges above thee ± pair-formation threshold (of 1012 eV). Pair-plasma jets are thought to be centrifugally driven by young stars during their first 104±1 years of rapid rotation.  相似文献

The place of origin of stony meteorites can be determined from their trapped solar-wind gases. “Gas-rich” meteorites have only 10?3?10?4 the solar noble gas content and ?10?2?10?4 the surface exposure age of lunar soils. These differences suggest that the gas implantation took place between 1 and 8 AU from the Sun, in a region where the cratering rate was 102?103 times higher than at 1 AU. Both characteristics point to the asteroid belt. The predicted Ne20 content a gas-rich meteorite formed at 2.5 AU is 1.2 × 10?5 cc STP g?1, compared to an observed mean for H-chondrites of 0.5 × 10?5 cc STP g?1. The observed prevalence of gas-rich meteorites (40–100% among carbonaceous chondrites, 2–33% among other classes) requires that the parent body remained long enough in the asteroid belt to develop a substantial regolith. This condition can be met by asteroids (~ 10% of mass converted to regolith.in 4.5 × 109 yr), but not by short period comets (~0.04% converted in 107 yr). It appears that a cometary origin can be ruled out for all stony meteorite clases that have gas-rich members. This includes carbonaceous chondrites.  相似文献

Considerations of the collision losses for protons traversing the 2.7-K blackbody microwave radiation field have led to the conclusion that the highest energy cosmic rays, those observed at ≥1020 eV, must come from sources within the present epoch. In light of this constraint, it is here suggested that these particles may be accelerated near the event horizons of spinning supermassive black holes associated with presently inactive quasar remnants. The required emf is generated by the black hole induced rotation of externally supplied magnetic field lines threading the horizon. Producing the observed flux of the highest energy cosmic rays would constitute a negligible drain on the black hole dynamo. Observations with upcoming air shower arrays and space missions may lead to the identification of candidate dormant galaxies that harbour such black holes. Although the highest energy events observed so far are accounted for within the context of this scenario, a spectral upper bound at ∼1021 eV is expected since the acceleration to higher energies appears to be precluded, on general grounds.  相似文献

A series of solar flares was observed near the same location in NOAA active region 8996 on 18–20 May 2000. A detailed analysis of one of these flares is presented where the emitting structures in soft and hard X-rays, EUV, H, and radio at centimeter wavelengths are compared. Hard X-rays and radio emission were observed at two separate loop footpoints, while soft X-rays and EUV emission were observed mainly above the nearby positive polarity region. The flare was confined although the observed type III bursts at the time of the flare maximum indicate that some field lines were open to the corona. No flux emergence was evident but moving magnetic features were observed around the sunspot region and within the positive polarity (plage) region. We suggest that the flaring was due to loop–loop interactions over the positive polarity region, where accelerated electrons gained access to the two separate loop systems. The repeated radio flaring at the footpoint of one loop was visible because of the strong magnetic fields near the large sunspot region while at the footpoint of the other loop the electrons could precipitate and emit in hard X-rays. The simultaneous emission and fluctuations in radio and X-rays – in two different loop ends – further support the idea of a single acceleration site at the loop intersection.  相似文献

The LOw-Frequency ARray(LOFAR)has recently conducted a survey(LOFAR Tied-Array Allsky Survey;LOTAAS)for pulsars in the Northern hemisphere that resulted in discoveries of 73 new pulsars.For the purpose of studying the properties of these pulsars,we search for theirγ-ray counterparts using the all-sky survey data obtained with the Large Area Telescope(LAT)onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope(Fermi).We analyze the LAT data for 70 LOTAAS pulsars(excluding two millisecond pulsars and one with the longest known spin period of 23.5 s).We find one candidate counterpart to PSR J1017+30,which should be searched for theγ-ray pulsation signal once its timing solution is available.For other LOTAAS pulsars,we derive their 0.3-500 GeV flux upper limits.In order to compare the LOTAAS pulsars with the knownγ-ray pulsars,we also derive the 0.3-500 GeVγ-ray fluxes for 112 of the latter contained in the Fermi LAT fourth source catalog.Based on the properties of theγ-ray pulsars,we derive upper limits on the spin-down luminosities of the LOTAAS pulsars.The upper limits are not very constraining but help suggest that most of the LOTAAS pulsars probably have<1033 erg s-1 spin-down luminosities and are not expected to be detectable with Fermi LAT.  相似文献

We used theIRAS All Sky Maps in order to search for infrared emission in the direction of the Okroy Cloud (R.A.=12h50m, =22°). An enhancement of 100 m diffuse emission is evident in such a region, with an anomalous value of the ratioI v (100 m)/A v ; hydrogen 21 cm emission is also present with low radial speed, thus suggesting that the cloud could be a satellite of our Galaxy.  相似文献

We examine the nonlinear dynamical properties of the monthly smoothed group sunspot number Rg and find that the solar activity underlying the time series of Rg is globally governed by a low-dimensional chaotic attractor. This finding is consistent with the nonlinear study results of the monthly Wolf sunspot numbers. We estimate the maximal Lyaponuv exponent (MLE) for the Rg series to be positive and to equal approximately 0.0187 ± 0.0023 (month-1). Thus, the Lyaponuv time or predictability time of the chaotic motion is obtained to be about 4.46 ± 0.5 years, which is slightly different with the predictability time obtained from Rz. However, they both indicate that solar activity forecast should be done only for a short to medium term due to the intrinsic complexity of the time behavior concerned.  相似文献

The problem of the origin of the enigmatic tektites is still unsolved. The two leading hypotheses - viz., ejecta from terrestrial impacts, and ejecta from lunar volcanoes or lunar impacts, each encounters serious difficulties. The former has ballistic and water content difficulties, while the latter has some compositional difficulties, especially in the trace elements, as determined from the returned samples. It is possible that the latter problem may be met through lunar volcanic ejecta from sites suggesting more differentiation than the majority of the Moon. That such features may exist is suggested from the identity of some granitic material in the returned rocks and soil samples implying fairly sizable source regions on the Moon. The rare terrestrial strewn tektite fields require restrictive ballistic trajectories from the Moon. Calculations reveal that ellipses of varying, decreasing sizes which depend on velocity of vertical ejection from which ejecta will intersect the earth at low-entrance angles occur on the nearside of the Moon. Reasonable velocities were chosen (2.55 to 3.0 km s?1) and these ellipses circumscribe areas with longitudes between 30 and 50° east and latitudes between 7° north and south of the Moon's equator. These areas were searched for evidence of volcanism. As tektites have compositions ranging from acidic (major tektites) to basic (micro-tektites) contents of silica (SiO2) both acidic and basic volcanic features were sought. Since tektites range in age from about 30 million to 700000 yr old, they imply recent volcanism. Lunar Transient Phenomena (LTP) and data from various Apollo missions indicate that mild internal activity may still be occurring on the Moon. LTP sites are logical sources to investigate, of which four occur within the above delimited regions. These and their surroundings were examined and a number of possible explosive volcanism sites were found. These sites are identified and discussed after a review of the manifestations found from the various kinds of terrestrial volcanism for which lunar counterparts were sought.  相似文献

We investigate the late-time dynamics of a four-dimensional universe based on modified scalar field gravity in which the standard Einstein-Hilbert action R is replaced by f(φ)R+f(R) where f(φ)=φ 2 and f(R)=AR 2+BR μν R μν,(A,B)∈ℝ. We discussed two independent cases: in the first model, the scalar field potential is quartic and for this special form it was shown that the universe is dominated by dark energy with equation of state parameter w≈−0.2 and is accelerated in time with a scale factor evolving like a(t)∝t 5/3 and B+3A≈0.036. When, B+3A→∞ which corresponds for the purely quadratic theory, the scale factor evolves like a(t)∝t 1/2 whereas when B+3A→0 which corresponds for the purely scalar tensor theory we found when a(t)∝t 1.98. In the second model, we choose an exponential potential and we conjecture that the scalar curvature and the Hubble parameter vary respectively like R=hH[(f)\dot]/f,h ? \mathbbRR=\eta H\dot{\phi}/\phi,\eta\in\mathbb{R} and H=g[(f)\dot]c,(g,c) ? \mathbbRH=\gamma\dot{\phi}^{\chi},(\gamma,\chi)\in\mathbb{R}. It was shown that for some special values of  χ, the universe is free from the initial singularity, accelerated in time, dominated by dark or phantom energy whereas the model is independent of the quadratic gravity corrections. This paper presents the results of optical spectroscopic observations of two ROSAT bright sources, 1RXS J020928.9 283243 and 1RXS J042332.8 745300. The low-dispersion spectra suggest the cataclysmic variable classification for the two objects.Further photometric observations are expected to reveal the variable features and to confirm the classifications.  相似文献

We have obtained spectra of Pluto on six nights during February 1979 using the Cassegrain Digicon spectrograph on the 2.1-m Struve reflector and the IDS spectrograph on the 2.7-m reflector of McDonald Observatory. These spectra, with nominal resolution of 6–7 Å, have been reduced to relative fluxes. Relative albedos were then calculated using the solar irradiances of Arvesen et al. (1969). The spectra taken in the blue show no indication of the upturn in albedo at λ < 3800 A? previously reported by Fix et al. (1970). The lack of a uv upturn cannot be interpreted in terms of a Rayleigh scattering atmosphere unless the albedo of the underlying surface is known. From the lack of methane absorption at the wavelength of the 6190- or 7270-Å methane bands we derive an upper limit of 1–3 m-am of gaseous CH4. The albedo curve has a constant slope between 3500 and 7300 Å. The only other solar system body which has this feature is an S-type asteroid.  相似文献

After briefly reviewing observations of molecular outflows from young stars, we discuss current ideas as to how they might be accelerated. Broadly speaking it is thought that such outflows represented either deflected accreted gas, or ambient material that has been pushed by a poorly collimated wind or accelerated by a highly collimated jet. Observations tend to favour the latter model, with jets being the clear favourite at least for the youngest flows. Jets from young stars may accelerate ambient gas either through the development of a boundary layer, where ambient and jet material are turbulently mixed, or at the working surface of the jet, i.e. the bow shock, via the prompt entrainment mechanism. Recently, we (Downes and Ray, 1999) have investigated, through simulations, the efficiency of prompt entrainment in jets from young stars as a means of accelerating ambient molecular gas without causing dissociation. Prompt entrainment was found to be very poor at transferring momentum from the jet to its surroundings in both the case of ``heavy' (not surprizingly) but also ``equi-density' (with respect to the ambient environment) jets. Moreover the transfer efficiency decreases with increasing density as the bow shock takes on a more aerodynamic shape. Models, however, in which jets are the ultimate prime movers, do have the advantage that they can reproduce several observational features of molecular outflows. In particular a power law relationship for mass versus velocity, similar to what is observed, is predicted by the simulations and the so-called ``Hubble Law' for molecular outflows is naturally explained. Pulsing of the jet, i.e. varying its velocity, is found to have little effect on the momentum transfer efficiency at least for the dynamically young jets we have studied.
