A regional tree-ring width chronology of Schrenk spruce(Picea schrenkiana) was used to determine the annual(previous July to current June) streamflow of the Kuqa River in Xinjiang, China, for the period of 1414–2015. A linear transformation of the tree-ring data accounted for 63.9% of the total variance when regressed against instrumental streamflow during 1957–2006. The model was validated by comparing the regression estimates against independent data. High streamflow periods with a streamflow above the 602-year mean occurred from 1430–1442, 1466–1492, 1557–1586, 1603–1615, 1687–1717, 1748–1767, 1795–1819, 1834–1856, 1888–1910 and 1989–2015. Low streamflow periods(streamflow below the mean) occurred from 1419–1429, 1443–1465, 1493–1556, 1587–1602, 1616–1686, 1720–1747, 1768–1794, 1820–1833, 1857–1887 and 1911–1988. The reconstruction compares well with the tree-ring-based streamflow series of the Tizinafu River from the Kunlun Mountains; both show well-known severe drought events. The streamflow reconstruction also shows highly synchronous upward trends since the 1980 s, suggesting that streamflow is related to Central Asian warming and humidification. Thus, the influences of the extremes and the persistence of low streamflows on local society may be considerable. Climatic changes in the watershed may be responsible for the change in the hydrologic regime of the Tarim Basin observed during the late twentieth century.  相似文献

We present a June–July drought reconstruction based on the standardized precipitation index (SPI) for the Balkan Peninsula over the period 730–2015 CE. The reconstruction is developed using a composite Pinus heldreichii tree‐ring width chronology, from a high‐elevation network of eight sites in the Pindus Mountains in northwest Greece, composed of living trees and relict wood. The dataset includes the ring width series of Europe's currently oldest known living tree, dendrochronologically dated to be more than 1075 years old. The spatial coverage of the reconstruction is improved by using an averaged gridded SPI data target derived from a response field that is located north of the study region. Justification for this approach includes the remoteness of instrumental data, the spatial variability of precipitation and synoptic scale circulation patterns. Over the past 1286 years, there have been 51 dry and 43 pluvial events. The driest year during the 1286‐year‐long period was 1660 and the wettest year was 1482. Comparison with shorter reconstructions and documentary evidence validates the new reconstruction, and provides additional insight into socioeconomic impacts and spatial patterns of extreme events. Fifty‐nine of 72 previously undescribed extremes occurred prior to the 17th century. The new reconstruction reveals long‐term changes in the number of extremes, including substantially fewer drought and pluvial events in the 20th century. Additional tests on the long‐term effects of age structure, replication and covariance changes support the heteroscedastic nature of the reconstructed hydro‐climatic extremes.  相似文献

In harsh and treeless environments, shrubs constitute the dominant growth form of woody plants, thus offering the opportunity to extend dendrochronological networks beyond the uppermost and northernmost distribution limits of trees. However, shrub‐based dendrochronology has so far resulted in only a few long and climate‐responsive ring‐width chronologies at such stressful sites, particularly above the alpine tree line. A previous study on an alpine Rhododendron shrub species resulted in <80‐year‐long ring‐width chronologies. Here, we collected Rhododendron aganniphum var. schizopeplum stems from elevations between 4000 and 4500 m a.s.l. on the SE Tibetan Plateau and built six tree‐ring width chronologies. One of them is 401 years long and well replicated from AD 1670 to 2011 (EPS>0.85), thus representing the longest shrub chronology available to date. A principal component analysis (PCA) converted the total variability of all six site chronologies into PCs. Then, the six site chronologies and the PC1, accounting for 65.9% of the total variance of the tree‐ring width, were correlated with time series of monthly climate data. Based on this, the year‐to‐year variability of the ring‐width indices was positively correlated with July temperature, which thus turned out to be the dominant factor controlling growth. Accordingly, such long shrub‐ring chronologies may act as climatic and ecological proxies in treeless environments of the Tibetan Plateau.  相似文献

An annual (July to June) precipitation reconstruction for the period AD 1760–2010 was developed from a Picea crassifolia regional tree‐ring chronology from two sites in the northern mountainous region of the Hexi Corridor, NW China. This reconstruction explains 52.1% of the actual precipitation variance during the period 1951 to 2010. Spatial correlations with gridded land‐surface data reveal that our reconstruction contains a strong regional precipitation signal for the Hexi Corridor and for the southern margin of the Badain Jaran Desert. Significant spectral peaks were identified at 31.9, 11.1, 8.0, 7.0, 3.2, 2.6 and 2.2 years. A large‐scale comparison indicates that our reconstruction is more consistent with climate records of a Westerly‐dominated Central Asia, and that the Westerlies have a greater impact on the precipitation in this region than the Asian summer monsoon. Our reconstructed precipitation series is significantly correlated with sea‐surface temperature (SST) in the tropical Atlantic Ocean (positive), the tropical Indian Ocean (positive), the western tropical Pacific Ocean (positive), and the western North Pacific Ocean (negative). The spatial correlation patterns between our precipitation reconstruction and SSTs of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans suggest a connection between regional precipitation variations and the high‐mid‐latitude northern atmospheric circulations (Westerlies and Asian summer monsoon).  相似文献

Boreas, 10.1111/j.1502‐3885.2010.00185.x. ISSN 0300‐9843. On the basis of a dense tree‐ring width network (34 unpublished multi‐centennial larch chronologies), this paper attempts to reconstruct, for the first time, the summer temperatures in the French Alps (44°–45.30°N, 6.30°–7.45°E) during the last millennium. The adaptative Regional Growth Curve standardization method is applied to preserve interannual to multi‐centennial variations in this high‐elevation proxy data set. The proxies are calibrated using the June to August mean temperatures from the last revised version of the HISTALP database spanning the period AD1760–2003 and adjusted to take into account the warm bias before 1850. About 45% of the temperature variance is reconstructed. Despite the use of the newly updated meteorological data set, the reconstruction still shows colder temperatures than early instrumental measurements between 1760 and 1840. The proxy record evidences a prolonged Medieval Warm Period persisting until 1500, with warm periods that resemble 20th century conditions but also cold phases before 1000 synchronous with Swiss glacier advances. The Little Ice Age is rather mild until 1660 if compared with other Alpine reconstructions. Thereafter, summers are 0.7 °C cooler than the 1961–1990 mean until 1920. The maximum temperature amplitude over the past 1250 years is estimated to be 3 °C between the warmest (810s, 1990s) and coldest (1810s) decades. Most of the 20th century is comparable with the Medieval Warm Period.  相似文献

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) is a widely used tree species in European dendroclimatology studies due to its common distribution across much of the continent. Almost all studies find radial growth strongly related to summer temperature, a result reflecting site selection at high elevation/latitude environments where trees grow at their ecophysiological limits. Due to the amount of attention spent on these sites there is a geographical and seasonal bias in temperature reconstructions based upon tree‐ring proxies in Europe. To overcome the limited availability of tree‐ring data in temperate lowlands, we present a northern Poland ring‐width chronology developed from living and historic Scots pine material with a strong common growth signal going back to AD 1200. Investigations into climate‐growth relationships found year‐to‐year ring‐width variability to be more strongly correlated to cold season temperature (November to April) prior to the growing season than summer temperatures during tree‐ring formation. Based on this relationship it was possible to reconstruct cold season temperature conditions for the last 810 years. Spatial field correlations with gridded instrumental records indicated that the reconstruction provides relevant cold season temperature information across the land regions bordering the North Atlantic Ocean and Baltic Sea, lowlands and uplands of western and central Europe, and the eastern and central interior of Russia. Despite an unsuccessful attempt to find a stationary relationship with the North Atlantic Oscillation, comparisons with several cold season temperature reconstructions confirmed the long‐term connection between our reconstructed temperature series for northern Poland and the wider area.  相似文献

Recent global warming and more frequent droughts are causing significant damage to maize production. A reliable estimate of drought intensity and duration is essential for testing maize hybrids to drought tolerance. For this purpose, the self-calibrating 10-day palmer drought severity index (scPDSI) and standardized precipitation index (SPI) for 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18, 27, and 36 10-day scales were used to estimate the effects of drought on grain yield of 32 maize hybrids evaluated in 2017 and 2018 at eight experimental locations in the Pannonian part of Croatia. Time series of observed 10-day mean air temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation totals for a set of “reference” weather stations of the croatian meteorological and hydrological service (DHMZ) for the period 1981–2018 were used to calculate the scPDSI and SPI indices. According to the 10-day scPDSI and SPI for different time scales, 2018 proved to be a “normal year,” while 2017 experienced a “mild to moderate drought,” which resulted in a 13% reduction in maize grain yield at eight experimental locations compared to 2018. The correlation between grain yield and drought indices for summer months was the highest for the 10-day scPDSI. To some extent, correlations between summer months’ SPI for the 3 10-day time scale and maize grain yield were comparable to the corresponding correlations for the 10-day scPDSI. However, for other SPI time scales considered, the corresponding correlations were weaker and less informative. The dependence of grain yield on scPDSI values was not the same for all hybrids, indicating their different tolerance to drought. The reduction in grain yield due to drought was primarily caused by insufficient grain filling (lower 1000-grain weight) and, to some extent, by a reduction in the number of grains. In this study, application of 10-day scPDSI data proved to be more relevant in detecting effects of drought on agronomic traits than application of SPI data for the most time scales.

气候变暖对森林生态系统产生了深刻影响,而树木生长对气候变化做出了不同的响应。本研究利用采自祁连山中、东部不同海拔梯度的青海云杉(Picea crassifolia)树轮样本,分别建立了中部和东部6个树轮宽度年表,分析了树木径向生长与各气候要素的关系以及随时间变化的稳定性。结果表明:祁连山中部青海云杉对降水和scPDSI较东部更为敏感。中部树轮宽度年表与当年5—7月的scPDSI极显著正相关(P<0.001),东部树轮宽度年表与前一年9月和当年5月scPDSI显著正相关,表明中部LCH区域青海云杉径向生长主要受当年5—7月土壤水分条件的限制;东部XYH区域则受前一年9月和当年5月的土壤水分的限制。20世纪80年代中东部温度显著升高(P<0.001),中东部树木生长受高温引起的干旱胁迫增强;20世纪90年代以后,由于中部降水增加而东部降水变化不明显,中部树木生长干旱压力得到缓解,东部森林受干旱的限制作用增强。此外,中东部青海云杉与温度、降水和scPDSI的相关关系逐渐趋向一致,未来气候的持续变暖或许将减小中东部树轮-气候关系的差异。  相似文献

中国天山北坡西部精河流域山区的树木年轮记录了气候与水文变化过程,利用树轮宽度重建流域径流量长期变化历史对艾比湖湿地自然保护区生态保护和流域水资源利用具有重要意义.建立了精河流域山区2个采样点的天山云杉树轮宽度年表,分析其对流域气象和水文要素的响应特征,建立了树轮宽度标准年表与精河水文站上年9月到当年8月径流量的线性转换方程(R2=37.5%, P<0.001),重建了公元1615—2007年的径流量变化历史.丰枯年份和持续丰枯期分析表明:精河出山口径流量重建序列包含7个丰水年和11个枯水年,且发生了13次持续丰水期和10次持续枯水期.多窗谱分析发现径流量序列在99%的置信水平上存在56.8 年、6.9 年、3.8 年、3.4 年、2.0~2.1 年周期,其中6.9 年对应厄尔尼诺-南方涛动(ENSO)事件的周期,同时还发现了重建序列与南方涛动指数的显著负相关(r =-0.329,n=56),表明研究区径流量受大尺度海气耦合模式的影响.精河径流量序列与天山北坡玛纳斯河和乌鲁木齐河的丰枯阶段以及天山山区、伊犁地区降水变化的干湿阶段较好的对应,表明天山北坡水文和气候变化的大尺度环流背景和驱动因子一致.  相似文献

采用油松树轮晚材宽度,重建了贺兰山北部地区过去270年以来夏季(6~8月)干燥指数,重建序列的方差解释量(R2)为52%。并发现干燥指数大于均值的年份有1745~1756年、1847~1864年、1925~1933年,小于均值的年份有1731~1744年、1775~1788年、1798~1808年、1865~1877年、1973~1992年;11年滑动平均后发现18世纪50年代前后、19世纪50~60年代、20世纪20年代后期以及30年代初为较干旱时期,干旱时期干燥度变率较小,而湿润时段干燥度变率较大,反映了贺兰山地区气候变化的一个特点,即干旱年会连续出现;周期分析表明,干燥度指数存在22年的准周期。  相似文献

Pollen accumulation rates (PARs) provide a potential proxy for quantitative tree volume (m3 ha?1) reconstruction with reliable absolute pollen productivity estimates (APPEs). We obtained APPEs for pine, spruce and birch at their range limits in northern Finland under two temperature periods (‘warm’ and ‘cold’) based on long‐term pollen trap and tree volume records within a 14‐km radius of each trap. APPEs (mean ± SE; × 108 grains m?3 a?1) tend to be higher for the ‘warm’ periods (pine 123.8 ± 24.4, birch 528.0 ± 398.4, spruce 434.3 ± 113.7) compared with the ‘cold’ periods (pine 95.5 ± 37.3, birch 317.3 ± 282.6, spruce 119.6 ± 37.6), although the difference is only significant for spruce. Using an independent temperature record and the APPEs obtained, we reconstruct a low‐frequency record of pine volume changes over the last 1000 years at Palomaa mire, where a high‐resolution record of Pinus PARs is available. Five phases are distinguished in the reconstruction: moderate pine volume, AD 1080–1170; high volume, AD 1170–1340; low volume, AD 1340–1630; very low volume, AD 1630–1810; and rising pine volume, AD 1810–1950. These phases do not coincide with periods of high or low June–July–August temperatures, and thus appear to reflect regional variations in tree volume, while high‐frequency changes within each time‐period block show variations in PARs in response to temperature. Understanding precipitation variation, drought and flood history, and their associated forcing mechanisms are important to human society. In this study, five moisture-sensitive tree-ring width chronologies are used to represent variations in precipitation over the past millennium on the Northeastern Tibetan Plateau (NETP). We find a strong coherency between chronologies in the NETP, indicating a common response to regional climate during the last millennium. The first principal component of the five chronologies (PC1) correlates significantly with regional precipitation and can thus be used as an indicator of regional precipitation variations. Dry spells, even more severe than the 1920s drought, occurred during AD 1139–1152, 1294–1309, 1446–1503 and 1708–1726. Previous studies in this area using other proxies also identified these droughts. Multi-Taper spectral analysis demonstrates significant periodicities at 205 yr and 73 yr, plus a range of ~ 2 yr cycles, suggesting possible linkage with solar variation and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). PC1 also shows coherent patterns with solar irradiance variation: the precipitation tends to reach low values during the well-known solar minimum.  相似文献

A reconstruction of spring (April–May) temperature for northern Fennoscandia developed from the Tornionjoki (Tornio river) long cryophenological record of ice break‐up dates, back to AD 1693, is presented. The record is strongly climatically sensitive and explains 67% of the variance in the instrumental data over the last 150 years. The record exhibits a stepped decrease in the duration of the river's ice cover by 14 days, equivalent to an increase in April–May mean temperature of approximately 2.5°C over the last three centuries. The relationship between the date of ice break‐up, and accumulated daily mean temperatures (>0°C) is investigated. Uncertainty in the observation of ice break‐up is also considered in addition to the potential of this time series for regional climate model validation. To reveal the influence of current warming on tree growth and δ18O in a sensitive high‐latitude region that is undergoing rapid climate change, we examined tree width and the earlywood and latewood δ18O at two sites with a 400‐m elevation difference in the Sygera Mountains of the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. The study period was from 1950 to 2011. The mean tree‐ring index at the low site was higher than that at the high site during the study period. The climatic responses of earlywood and latewood δ18O at both sites were similar. Earlywood δ18O was mainly influenced by the June to August temperature and total cloud cover, whereas latewood δ18O was mainly controlled by relative humidity from July to August. Spatial correlations with CRU TS 3.1 regional data suggest that our δ18O chronologies can represent climatic changes over large regions. The high offset between earlywood δ18O at the two sites (2.3‰ higher at the low site) was mainly influenced by the high temperature lapse rate as a function of altitude during the earlywood growing season. Furthermore, meltwater with lower δ18O values might have affected earlywood δ18O at the high site, and thereby increased the earlywood δ18O offset between two sites. The low latewood δ18O offset between the two sites (0.4‰ higher at the low site) was not significant, but appears to have been primarily influenced by the low precipitation δ18O lapse rate as a function of altitude during the latewood growing season. Earlywood δ18O of Smith fir suitable for reconstructing past temperatures and latewood δ18O suitable for reconstructing past relative humidity on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau were identified.  相似文献

分别逐轮测定两棵中国红松的年轮纤维索碳同位素组成,获得两个长达109a(1880-1988年)的时间序列。合成一个新序列并移去趋势变化后,与同样长度的中国东部年气温变化序列进行交叉相关分析。结果表明树轮碳同位索组成对生长当年之前第二年温度变化具有灵敏响应(r=0.373,n=109,P〈0.1301)。同时,碳同位索组成也与其中一棵树的年轮宽度呈高度负相关(r=-0.390,n=109,P〈0.001)。这一方面揭示了中国红松年轮稳定碳同位素组成序列在重建高分辨率区域性气候变化中的重要作用,也说明树轮碳同位素组成转录气候变化信号的复杂性。  相似文献

We developed a tree-ring chronology (AD 1446–2008) based on 75 cores from 37 Abies squamata Mast. trees from the Shaluli Mountains, southeastern Tibet Plateau, China, using signal-free methods, which are ideally suited to remove or reduce the distortion introduced during traditional standardization. This chronology correlates best with regional temperatures in June–July, which allowed us to develop a June–July temperature reconstruction that explained 51.2% of the variance in the instrumental record. The reconstruction showed seven cold periods and five warm periods. Cold periods were identified from AD 1472 to 1524, 1599 to 1653, 1661 to 1715, 1732 to 1828, 1837 to 1847, 1865 to 1876 and 1907 to 1926. Warm intervals occurred from AD 1446 to 1471, 1525 to 1598, 1716 to 1731, 1848 to 1864, 1877 to 1906 and 1927 to present. The reconstruction agrees well with nearby tree-ring-based temperature reconstructions. Spatial correlation analyses suggest that our reconstructions provide information on June–July temperature variability for the southeastern Tibetan Plateau and its vicinity. Spectral analyses revealed significant peaks at 2–6, 10.7, 51.2, 102.2 and 204.8 yr. The temperature variability in this area may be affected by ENSO, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and solar activity.  相似文献

A principal method for studying past hydroclimatic change is the reconstruction of paleo-lake levels. Here, we provide high-resolution lake-level records from New Long Pond and Rocky Pond in southeastern Massachusetts, which each contain evidence for multiple, sub-centennial-to-millennial scale low stands during the transition between the Late Pleistocene (15.0 ka) and Middle Holocene (ca 7.0 ka). Data from New Long Pond also demonstrate sedimentary evidence for a drop in water levels in the early to mid AD 20th century, when long-term trends in instrumental data show lower-than-average precipitation in the northeastern United States. Local data show the most precipitous declines in precipitation and groundwater levels are concurrent with the most severe drought in the AD 1960s, which occurred during a period of low sea-surface temperatures in the western North Atlantic. Ground penetrating radar and sediment core data indicate five intervals with numerous paleo-shoreline deposits between ca 15.0 and 7.0 ka, similar to the layer deposited in the AD 1960s. Many of the intervals of low lake levels coincide with proposed meltwater release events or abrupt climate oscillations in the circum North Atlantic. For example, we document at least three low stands during the Younger Dryas (12.9–11.6 ka) and in association with the “9.2” and “8.2” ka events. The combined evidence of (1) concurrent paleo-droughts in southeastern New England with documented North Atlantic abrupt cooling events and (2) recent drought with the modern association of low sea-surface temperatures indicates that freshening and cooling of the western North Atlantic is a viable mechanism for decreasing moisture within the region. Large-scale changes in seasonality and ice sheet extent also may have increased the susceptibility of the northeast to dry conditions triggered by changes in the North Atlantic.  相似文献

Freshwater discharge into Albemarle Sound and many other large estuaries can have a major impact on the physical and biological properties of the estuary. Earlywood (EW) and latewood (LW) width tree ring chronologies recently developed from ancient trees and sub-fossil logs found at Devil’s Gut of the Roanoke River, North Carolina, were used with new EW and LW width data from Blackwater River, Virginia, to reconstruct the July Palmer Hydrological Drought Index (PHDI) over the drainage basin of Albemarle Sound from 934 to 2005. This reconstruction is based on a principal component regression using millennium-long chronologies of both EW and LW widths, calibrated and verified against instrumental July PHDI from 1895 to 1985. The reconstruction provides a lengthy representation of inter-annual to multi-decadal growing season moisture variability that directly affects water quality in the Albemarle Sound estuarine ecosystem. Single-year drought and wetness extremes were more common in the modern instrumental period (1895–2005), but prolonged droughts reconstructed during the Medieval and Early Colonial eras were more severe and sustained than the reconstructed or observed droughts during the twentieth century. Several abrupt transitions between decadal drought and wetness regimes are reconstructed, especially during the Medieval Era. Composite analysis of lower-magnitude sub-decadal regime shifts in the instrumental record during the twentieth century indicates that major changes in mid-latitude circulation over the Northern Hemisphere may have been involved in these longer decadal transitions between moisture regimes over Albemarle Sound in prehistory.  相似文献

利用祁连山东段吐鲁沟的油松树轮宽度序列,与气象要素进行了相关分析,并重建了公元1895年来 1~8月平均气温,转换方程方差解释量52.6%(R2adj=48.7%,F=13.589, p<0.001)。重建结果表明研究区近120年来经历了19世纪末到20世纪20年代、20世纪20年代到40年代末、20世纪 40~70年代3个明显的升降温过程和20世纪70年代以来的升温过程。重建序列与研究区以西的祁连山中段、天山西段、阿尔泰山中段温度的变化基本一致; 重建序列显示的 1923~1929年的高温时段与中国20世纪20年代大范围的干旱事件一致,而且与北大西洋涛动、北极涛动的变化遥相呼应,说明祁连山东段的树轮资料不仅记录了区域气候变化信号,而且对于全球变化响应敏感。  相似文献
