We have obtained estimates of the threshold wind speed Vgt near the top of the atmospheric boundary layer on Mars and of the rotation angle α between this wind velocity and the direction of the surface stress. this calculation has been accomplished by combining wind tunnel determinations of the friction velocity with semi-empirical theories of the Earth's atmospheric boundary layer. Calculations have been performed for a variety of values of the surface pressure, ground temperature, roughness height, boundary layer height, atmospheric composition atmospheric stability, particle density, particle diameter, and strength of the cohesive force between the particles. The curve of threshold wind speed as a function of particle diameter monotonically decreases with decreasing particle diameter for a cohesionless soil but has the classical U shape for a soil with cohesion. Observational data indicate that the latter condition holds on Mars. Under “favorable” conditions minimum threshold wind speeds between about 50 and 100m/sec are required to cause particle motion. These minimum values lie close to the highest wind speeds predicted by general circulation models. Hence, particle motion should be an infrequent occurence and should be strongly correlated with nearness to small topographic features. The latter prediction is in accord with the correlation found between albedo markings and topographic obstacles such as craters. For equal wind speeds at the midpoint of the boundary layer, particle movement occurs more readily in general at night than during the day, more readily in the winter polar areas than the equatorial areas noon, and more readily for ice particles than for silicate particles. The boundary between saltating and suspendable particles is located at a particle diameter of about 100 μm. This value is close to the diameter at which the Vgt curve has its minimum. Hence, the wind can set directly into motion both saltating and larger-sized suspendable particles, but dust-storm-sized particles usually require impact by a saltating particle for motion to be initiated. Albedo changes occur most often in regions containing a mixture of dust-stoorm-sized particles and saltating particles. The threshold wind speed for surfaces containing large, nonerodible roughness elements can either be larger or smaller than the value for surfaces with only erodible material. The former condition for Vgt holds when the roughness height z0 is less than about 1 cm and may be illustrated by craters that have experienced less erosion than their environs. The latter condition for Vgt may be partly responsible for albedo changes detected on the elevated shield volcano, Pavonis Mons. Values of the angle α generally lie between 10 and 30°. These figures place a modest limitation on the utility of surface albedo streaks as wind direction indicators.  相似文献

We observed the E-class main-belt Asteroids (MBAs) 44 Nysa and 434 Hungaria with Arecibo Observatory's S-band (12.6 cm) radar. Both asteroids exhibit polarization ratios higher than those measured for any other MBA: Nysa, μc=0.50±0.02 and Hungaria, μc=0.8±0.1. This is consistent with the high polarization ratios measured for every E-class near-Earth asteroid (NEA) observed by Benner et al. [Benner, L.A.M., and 10 collegues, 2008. Icarus, submitted for publication] and suggests a common cause. Our estimates of radar albedo are 0.19±0.06 for Nysa and 0.22±0.06 for Hungaria. These values are higher than those of most MBAs and, when combined with their high polarization ratios, suggest that the surface bulk density of both asteroids is high. We model Nysa as an ellipsoid of dimension 113×67×65 km (±15%) giving an effective diameter Deff=79±10 km, consistent with previous estimates. The echo waveforms are not consistent with a contact binary as suggested by Kaasalainen et al. [Kaasalainen, M., Torppa, J., Piironen, J., 2002. Astron. Astrophys. 383, L19-L22]. We place a constraint on Hungaria's maximum diameter, Dmax?11 km consistent with previous size estimates.  相似文献

Experimental data on cohesion-free particle transport in fluid beds are applied, via a universal scaling relation, to atmospheric transport of fine grains on Mars. It may be that cohesion due to impact vitrification, vacuum sintering, and adsorbed thin films of water are absent on Mars—in which case the curve of threshold velocity versus grain size may show no turnup to small particle size, and one micron diameter grains may be injected directly by saltation into the Martian atmosphere more readily than 100 micron diameter grains. Curves for threshold and terminal velocities are presented for the full range of Martian pressures and temperatures. Suspension of fine grains is significantly easier at low temperatures and high pressures; late afternoon brightenings of many areas of Mars, and the generation of dust storms in such deep basins as Hellas, may be due to this effect.  相似文献

The small physical thickness of Saturn's rings requires that radio occultation observations be interpreted using scattering models with limited amounts of multiple scatter. A new model in which the possible order of near-forward scatter is strictly limited allows for the small physical thickness, and can be used to relate Voyager 1 observations of 3.6-and 13-cm wavelength microwave scatter from Saturn's rings to the ring particle size distribution function n(a), for particles with radius 0.001 ≤ a ≤ 20 m. This limited-scatter model yields solutions for particle size distribution functions for eight regions in Saturn's rings, which exhibit approximately inverse-cubic power-law behavior, with large-size cutoffs in particle radius ranging from about 5 m in ring C to about 10 m in parts of ring A. The power-law index is about 3.1 in ring C, about 2.8 in the Cassini division, and increases systematically with radial location in ring A from 2.7 at 2.10Rs to slightly more than 3.0 at 2.24Rs. Corresponding mass densities are 32–43 kg/m2 in ring C, 188 kg/m2 in the Cassini division, and 244–344 kg/m2 in ring A, under the assumption that the material density of the particles is 0.9 g/cm3. These values are a factor of 1 to 2 lower than first-order mass loading estimates derived from resonance phenomena. In view of the uncertainties in the measurements and in the linear density wave model, and the strong arguments for icy particles with specific gravity not greater than about 1, we interpret this discrepancy as being indicative of possible differences in the regions studied, or systematic errors in the interpretation of the scattering results, the density wave phenomena, or some combination of the above.  相似文献

Variations in air density have been determined using the orbit of the satellite Cosmos 462, 1971-106A, which entered orbit on 3 December 1971 with an initial perigee near 230 km and inclination 65.75°, and decayed on 4 April 1975. Accurate orbits determined at 85 epochs give perigee height correct to about 200 m throughout the satellite's lifetime. Using these values of perigee height and orbital decay rates from NORAD elements, 604 values of air density at half a scale height above perigee have been evaluated. These densities have been compared with values from the COSPAR International Reference Atmosphere 1972, taking account of variations due to solar activity and geomagnetic disturbances, and day-to-night variations, to reveal the residual variations in density at a series of standard heights, 245, 240, 232 and 213 km.The main residual variation is semi-annual, with maxima usually in April and October, and minima usually in January and July; but it is irregular in phase and shape. The amplitude of the semi-annual variation is remarkably constant from year to year between 1972 and 1975, and considerably greater than that given by CIRA 1972: the April/July density ratio is 1.68, not 1.32 as in CIRA; the October–November maxima are all lower than the April maxima, whereas CIRA gives the opposite; the July minima are 18% lower than the January minima, as opposed to 10% in CIRA.A standardized semi-annual density variation for the early 1970s is presented, with January minimum of 0.94, April maximum of 1.28, July minimum of 0.77 and October–November maximum of 1.22. In addition, three other recurrent variations are recognizable: in each year the density has a subsidiary minimum in May and maximum in June; there are low values in mid November and high values in late December.  相似文献

The spreading angle of a number of light and dark Martian streaks is determined from selected Mariner 9 images. The resulting frequency distributions of spreading half-angles have maxima at ~5° for light, and ~7° for dark streaks; however the dark streaks have a secondary maximum spreading angle at ~14°. The smaller values, which include most streaks, are interpreted as crater-wake spreading phenomena. The larger value, found in only a few dark streaks or “tails,” may result from atmospheric diffusion and subsequent deposition of material from isolated sources such as vents or blowouts. An atmospheric diffusion-deposition analysis is presented, assuming this streak origin, from which it is possible to deduce the eddy diffusivity, K, in Mars' boudary layer. Calculated K values are found to agree with various theoretical estimates. They lie in the range 107 and 109 cm2 sec?1 and exhibit the proper scale dependence. Thus it appears that, in addition to streak-derived wind direction patterns and speed information, it is possible in a few cases to derive information on Mars' boundary-layer turbulence from streak-spreading measurements.  相似文献

The constraints on the properties of neutron star matter from the mass of neutron star PSR J1614-2230 are examined in the framework of the relativistic mean field theory. We find that there are little differences between the σ potentials of large mass neutron star and those of canonnical mass neutron star. For potentials of ω, ρ, neutrons and electrons, the values corresponding to the large mass neutron star are larger than those to the canonnical mass neutron star as the baryon number density is more than a certain value. We also find that for the relative particle number density of electrons, muons, neutrons and protons and the pressure of the neutron star, the values corresponding to the large mass neutron star are far larger than those to the canonnical mass neutron star. For the relative particle number density of hyperons Λ, Σ?, Σ0, Σ+ and Ξ?, the values corresponding to the large mass neutron star are far smaller than those to the canonnical mass neutron star. These mean that the larger mass of neutron star is more advantageous to the production of protons but is not advantageous to the production of hyperons.  相似文献

We examine the effects of NH3 ice particle clouds in the atmosphere of Jupiter on outgoing thermal radiances. The cloud models are characterized by a number density at the cloud base, by the ratio of the scale height of the vertical distribution of particles (Hp) to the gas scale height (Hg), and by an effective particle radius. NH3 ice particle-scattering properties are scaled from laboratory measurements. The number density for the various particle radius and scale height models is inferred from the observed disk average radiance at 246 cm?1, and preliminary lower limits on particle sizes are inferred from the lack of apparent NH3 absorption features in the observed spectral radiances as well as the observed minimum flux near 2100 cm?1. We find lower limits on the particle size of 3 μm if Hp/Hg = 0.15, or 10μmif Hp/Hg = 0.50 or 0.05. NH3 ice particles are relatively dark near the far-infrared and 8.5-μm atmospheric windows, and the outgoing thermal radiances are not very sensitive to various assumptions about the particle-scattering function as opposed to radiances at 5 μm, where particles are relatively brighter. We examined observations in these three different spectral window regions which provide, in principle, complementary constraints on cloud parameters. Characterization of the cloud scale height is difficult, but a promising approach is the examination of radiances and their center-to-limb variation in spectral regions where there is significant opacity provided by gases of known vertical distribution. A blackbody cloud top model can reduce systematic errors due to clouds in temperature sounding to the level of 1K or less. The NH3 clouds provide a substantial influence on the internal infrared flux field near the 600-mbar level.  相似文献

The commonly used classical equipartition or minimum‐energy estimate of total magnetic fields strengths from radio synchrotron intensities is of limited practical use because it is based on the hardly known ratio K of the total energies of cosmic ray protons and electrons and also has inherent problems. We present a revised formula, using the number density ratio K for which we give estimates. For particle acceleration in strong shocks K is about 40 and increases with decreasing shock strength. Our revised estimate for the field strength gives larger values than the classical estimate for flat radio spectra with spectral indices of about 0.5–0.6, but smaller values for steep spectra and total fields stronger than about 10 µG. In very young supernova remnants, for example, the classical estimate may be too large by up to 10×. On the other hand, if energy losses of cosmic ray electrons are important, K increases with particle energy and the equipartition field may be underestimated significantly. Our revised larger equipartition estimates in galaxy clusters and radio lobes are consistent with independent estimates from Faraday rotation measures, while estimates from the ratio between radio synchrotron and X‐ray inverse Compton intensities generally give much weaker fields. This may be explained e.g. by a concentration of the field in filaments. Our revised field strengths may also lead to major revisions of electron lifetimes in jets and radio lobes estimated from the synchrotron break frequency in the radio spectrum. Laboratory simulations using the Arizona State University Vortex Generator (ASUVG) were run to simulate sediment flux in dust devils in terrestrial ambient and Mars-analog conditions. The objective of this study was to measure vortex sediment flux in the laboratory to yield estimations of natural dust devils on Earth and Mars, where all parameters may not be measured. These tests used particles ranging from 2 to 2000 μm in diameter and 1300 to 4800 kg m−3 in density, and the results were compared with data from natural dust devils on Earth and Mars. Typically, the cores of dust devils (regardless of planetary environment) have a pressure decrease of ∼0.1-1.5% of ambient atmospheric pressure, which enhances the lifting of particles from the surface. Core pressure decreases in our experiments ranged from ∼0.01% to 5.00% of ambient pressure (10 mbar Mars cases and 1000 mbar for Earth cases) corresponding to a few tenths of a millibar for Mars cases and a few millibars for Earth cases. Sediment flux experiments were run at vortex tangential wind velocities of 1-45 m s−1, which typically correspond to ∼30-70% above vortex threshold values for the test particle sizes and densities. Sediment flux was determined by time-averaged measurements of mass loss for a given vortex size. Sediment fluxes of ∼10−6-100 kg m−2 s−1 were obtained, similar to estimates and measurements for fluxes in dust devils on Earth and Mars. Sediment flux is closely related to the vortex intensity, which depends on the strength of the pressure decrease in the core (ΔP). This study found vortex size is less important for lifting materials because many different diameters can have the same ΔP. This finding is critical in scaling the laboratory results to natural dust devils that can be several orders of magnitude larger than the laboratory counterparts.  相似文献

HiRISE images of Mars with ground sampling down to 25 cm/pixel show that the dust-rich mantle covering the surfaces of the Tharsis Montes is organized into ridges whose form and distribution are consistent with formation by aeolian saltation. Other dusty areas near the volcanoes and elsewhere on the planet exhibit a similar morphology. The material composing these “reticulate” bedforms is constrained by their remote sensing properties and the threshold curve combined with the saltation/suspension boundary, both of which vary as a function of elevation (atmospheric pressure), particle size, and particle composition. Considering all of these factors, dust aggregates are the most likely material composing these bedforms. We propose that airfall dust on and near the volcanoes aggregates in situ over time, maybe due to electrostatic charging followed by cementation by salts. The aggregates eventually reach a particle size at which saltation is possible. Aggregates on the flanks are transported downslope by katabatic winds and form linear and “accordion” morphologies. Materials within the calderas and other depressions remain trapped and are subjected to multidirectional winds, forming an interlinked “honeycomb” texture. In many places on and near the volcanoes, light-toned, low thermal inertia yardangs and indurated surfaces are present. These may represent “duststone” formed when aggregates reach a particle size below the threshold curve, such that they become stabilized and subsequently undergo cementation.  相似文献

Analyses of ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared spectra of Saturn lead to an inhomogeneous atmospheric model, having a clear gas layer which lies above an absorbing particle layer which lies above an ammonia haze layer. The boundary between the clear layer and the absorbing particle layer is at a pressure of 0.2 atm in the equatorial region and 0.3 atm in the temperate region. The boundary between the absorbing particle layer and the haze layer is at the radiative-convective boundary. Observations of ammonia absorption lines indicate that sunlight penetrates the haze to the ammonia sublimation level at a depth of 1.1 atm. Absorbing particles cause the observed decrease in reflectivity from visible to ultraviolet wavelengths. Consideration of the wavelength variation of Mie scattering parameters leads to an upper limit of about 0.2 μm for the particle radii and a particle number density of 103 cm?3. Some possible particle compositions are discussed. Comparison of computed 3-0 and 4-0 band hydrogen quadropole line equivalent widths with observed values leads to a haze layer optical thickness above the ammonia sublimation level of approximately 10. Equivalent widths computed for an equilibrium distribution of states agree better with observed values than those computed for a normal distribution. Methane 3ν3 band manifold equivalent widths are in best agreement with measured equivalent widths for a CH4/H2 abundance ratio of 2 × 10?3, which is 4.5 times the solar C/H ratio.  相似文献

The orbit of the satellite Cosmos 482 (1972-23A) has been determined at 77 epochs between 8 November 1977 and 18 April 1981 from 5650 optical and radar observations. The computations were made with the RAE orbit determination program PROP 6, and an average accuracy of 150 m radial and cross-track was achieved.Cosmos 482 was a high-drag satellite in an eccentric orbit and, between the first epoch and the last, the orbital period decreased from 157 to 94 min, the eccentricity decreased from 0.32 to 0.04, and the orbital inclination decreased from 52.14° to 51.95° due to the transverse forces caused by atmospheric rotation. The orbit was therefore ideal for determining the atmospheric rotation rate from the decrease in inclination, and seven accurate values of rotation rate have been obtained. The new values strengthen the existing overall picture of upper-atmosphere winds, and are generally in good accord with the previous results. An improved equation has been derived for calculating density scale height H from the decrease in perigee distance, and has been applied to determine seven values of H. The corresponding values of H from the COSPAR International Reference Atmosphere are on average 5% lower than the observational values, for 1980–1981.  相似文献

The satellite NOAA-B (1980-43A) was launched in May 1980 into an orbit with perigee height near 260 km and apogee height 1440 km, at an inclination of 92.2°.The lifetime was 11 months. The orbit has been determined at 40 epochs between October 1980 and May 1981 from about 3000 radar and optical observations. The average orbital accuracy, radial and cross-track, was about 100 m, with rather better accuracy in the final 14 days. The variation of orbital inclination has been analysed to determine two good values of atmospheric rotation rate, namely 1.10 ± 0.10 rev day?1 at 300 km (average local time) and 1.15 ± 0.06 rev day?1 at 225 km (evening). The effect of atmospheric rotation on the precession of the orbital plane of an actual satellite has never previously been detected; it is clearly apparent for 1980-43A in its last days and conforms to the expected theoretical change. The variation of perigee height has been analysed to determine ten values of atmospheric density scale height, for heights of 280–370 km. These values, accurate to about 3%, exceed by 15% the values indicated by the COSPAR International Reference Atmosphere. Solar activity was higher in the years 1980–1981 than at any time since early 1958 and it appears that the CIRA model underestimates the density and density scale height at high levels of solar activity.  相似文献

The particle size distribution in the coma and tail of Comet Bennett has been determined by several methods, each sensitive to a particular size range. It is confirmed that a minimum value of the particle density (?), size (d), and radiation pressure efficiency (Qrp) function (?d/Qrp) exists at about 3–10 sx 10?5g cm?2. The existence of such a cutoff is probably due to the decreasing radiation pressure efficiency for particles smaller than the wavelength of the light being scattered. An exact determination of this cutoff may allow identification of the particle type.  相似文献

We have observed about 16 absorption lines of the ν2 SO2 vibrational band on Io, in disk-integrated 19-μm spectra taken with the TEXES high spectral resolution mid-infrared spectrograph at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility in November 2001, December 2002, and January 2004. These are the first ground-based infrared observations of Io's sunlit atmosphere, and provide a new window on the atmosphere that allows better longitudinal and temporal monitoring than previous techniques. Dramatic variations in band strength with longitude are seen that are stable over at least a 2 year period. The depth of the strongest feature, a blend of lines centered at 530.42 cm−1, varies from about 7% near longitude 180° to about 1% near longitude 315° W, as measured at a spectral resolution of 57,000. Interpretation of the spectra requires modeling of surface temperatures and atmospheric density across Io's disk, and the variation in non-LTE ν2 vibrational temperature with altitude, and depends on the assumed atmospheric and surface temperature structure. About half of Io's 19-μm radiation comes from the Sun-heated surface, and half from volcanic hot spots with temperatures primarily between 150 and 200 K, which occupy about 8% of the surface. The observations are thus weighted towards the atmosphere over these low-temperature hot spots. If we assume that the atmosphere over the hot spots is representative of the atmosphere elsewhere, and that the atmospheric density is a function of latitude, the most plausible interpretation of the data is that the equatorial atmospheric column density varies from about 1.5×1017 cm−2 near longitude 180° W to about 1.5×1016 cm−2 near longitude 300° W, roughly consistent with HST UV spectroscopy and Lyman-α imaging. The inferred atmospheric kinetic temperature is less than about 150 K, at least on the anti-Jupiter hemisphere where the bands are strongest, somewhat colder than inferred from HST UV spectroscopy and millimeter-wavelength spectroscopy. This longitudinal variability in atmospheric density correlates with the longitudinal variability in the abundance of optically thick, near-UV bright SO2 frost. However it is not clear whether the correlation results from volcanic control (regions of large frost abundance result from greater condensation of atmospheric gases supported by more vigorous volcanic activity in these regions) or sublimation control (regions of large frost abundance produce a more extensive atmosphere due to more extensive sublimation). Comparison of data taken in 2001, 2002, and 2004 shows that with the possible exception of longitudes near 180° W between 2001 and 2002, Io's atmospheric density does not appear to decrease as Io recedes from the Sun, as would be expected if the atmosphere were supported by the sublimation of surface frost, suggesting that the atmosphere is dominantly supported by direct volcanic supply rather than by frost sublimation. However, other evidence such as the smooth variation in atmospheric abundance with latitude, and atmospheric changes during eclipse, suggest that sublimation support is more important than volcanic support, leaving the question of the dominant atmospheric support mechanism still unresolved.  相似文献

Using key dates associated with solar interaction regions (SIR), a superposed epoch analysis is performed on the zonal and meridional kinetic energy density and square of the vorticity (enstrophy) of the main motion at 500 mb height. No relationships are found between SIR and these atmospheric dynamical parameters irrespective of the polarity (North or South) of the enhanced interplanetary magnetic fields (IMF) within the SIR, or with latitude and season. This investigation and other available results suggest that the short term solar variations do not influence large volumes of the troposphere but only localized regions. The average atmospheric kinetic energy density during active solar conditions is higher than during quiet solar condition, with no significant differences in enstrophy. This confirms an earlier result. It is also shown that SIR with enhanced southward directed IMF correspond to higher level of geomagnetic index (Ap > 10, Kp > 3) than randomly selected days.  相似文献

We have constructed a model of the physical processes controlling Titan's clouds. Our model produces clouds that qualitatively match the present observational constraints in a wide variety of model atmospheres, including those with low atmospheric pressures (25 mbar) and high atmospheric pressures. We find the following: (1) high atmospheric temperatures (160°K) are important so that there is a large scale height in the first few optical depths of cloud; (2) the aerosol mass production occurs at very low aerosol optical depth so that the cloud particles do not directly affect the photochemistry producing them; (3) the production rate of aerosol mass by chemical processes is probably greater than 3.5 × 10?14 g cm?2 sec?1; (4) and the eddy diffusion coefficient is less than 5 × 106 cm2 sec?1 except perhaps in the top optical depth of the cloud. Our model is not extremely sensitive to particle shape, but it is sensitive to particle density. Higher particle densities require larger aerosol mass production rates to produce satisfactory clouds. Particle densities of unity require a mass production rate on the order of 3.5 × 10?13 g cm?2 sec?1. We also show that an increase in mass input causes a decrease in the mean particle size, as required by J. B. Pollack et al. (1980, Geophys. Res. Lett. 7, 829–832), to explain the observed correlation between the solar cycle and Titan's albedo; that coagulation need not be extremely inefficient in order to obtain realistic clouds as proposed by M. Podolak and E. Podolak (1980, Icarus43, 73–83); that coagulation could be inefficient due to photoelectric charging of the particles; and, that the lifetime of particles near the altitude of unit optical depth is a few months, as required to explain the temporal variability observed by S. T. Suess and G. W. Lockwood and D. P. Cruikshank and J. S. Morgan (1979, Bull. Amer. Astron. Soc.11, 564). Although Titan's aerosols are ottically thick in the vertical direction, the atmosphere is so extended that the horizontal visibility is greater than that found anywhere at Earth's surface.  相似文献

An empirical density formula is explored as a practical model for atmospheric variations and satellite drag analyses. Expanding neutral air density as a series of spherical harmonics and normalizing to a fixed height, an analytical expression for the rate of change of the mean motion is developed for an oblate atmosphere with density scale height varying linearly with altitude. A subset of the coefficients in the density expansion is determined by least-squares adjustment to the observed orbital decay rate of Intercosmos 13 rocket (1975-22B) for the period May 1975–December 1979. Comparisons against four thermospheric models are undertaken for the solar activity effect and the diurnal and semi-annual variations. Given the even spread of data and the increase in solar activity from low to moderate, the air density variation with solar activity is particularly well determined. The results support the “J77” model revealing a greater increase in density with the daily solar index than either the “MSIS” or “DTM” thermospheric models near the solar minimum. Analyses of the diurnal and semi-annual variations are less exact.  相似文献

Recent estimates of the bulk density of the largest M-type asteroid 16 Psyche (1.4 and 1.8 g/cm3) seem to be too low for asteroids of this type. The interpretation of such low densities for the asteroid 16 Psyche with its increased metal content led to estimates of its macroporosity of 70%. In the present paper, it has been shown that the extremely low density estimates are caused primarily by the usage of a very high value of the IRAS diameter of the asteroid (D = 264 km, which corresponds to an IRAS albedo of 0.10). The application of the more accurate polarimetric albedo (0.170) and diameter (213 km) of Psyche results in a bulk density of the asteroid of 3.3 ± 0.7 g/cm3. For a moderate asteroid macroporosity of 30–40%, this density even agrees with the 50% metal content and, therefore, removes both the contradiction with the radar data and the problems of the very low density and unlikely high porosity of the asteroid 16 Psyche.  相似文献
