The last two decades have witnessed a continually expanding programme of investigation concerned with the discovery of terrestrial impact craters or astroblemes as Dietz has called them. These are the wounds produced on the Earth's surface by the high speed collisions with giant meteorites which have taken place throughout geological time. With the exception of a few comparatively recent craters, most of the large scars originated tens or hundreds of millions of years ago and have been preserved as fossils in rocks which have since undergone considerable erosion and alteration.Although various workers have now gathered an impressive array of evidence appertaining to the topographical, petrological and mineralogical changes wrought by the sudden release of enormous quantities of energy when collisions occur, it still remains true that most discoveries of craters are made as a result of their quasi-circular appearance on maps or aerial photographs.A search of maps of the British Isles has revealed several possible impact sites, of which the most convincing is the feature known as St. Magnus Bay in the Shetland Islands. No explanation other than massive impact seems able to account for the peculiar shape of the bay and its resemblance to certain ancient Canadian impact crater residuals. In size it ranks among the dozen or so largest terrestrial impact features and is thus an important object for further study; in its own right and in the context of the currently enhanced speculation concerning the origin of craters on such bodies as the Moon and Mars.  相似文献

The results of the experimental study of the interaction of polyethylene impactors with a massive flat organic-glass target are presented. The impactor speed ranged from 3.2 to 5.84 km/s. A statistical analysis of the mass and size distributions of fragments of the impact and chop craters of the target is done. As a result, some scaling relations are established for the geometric size of the craters, the cumulative ejected mass, the mass of the largest fragment ejected from the impact crater, and for the dust mass. The mass distribution of the impact-crater fragments is shown to obey a power law and agrees well with other authors" data for some materials. The critical impact energy k , resulting in the catastrophic disruption of the target into individual fragments, is estimated. For organic glass, the value of k is found to be 4 × 104J/kg. The mass of the largest (central) fragment accounts for 27 to 33% of the overall mass ejected from the impact crater. The use of the parameter 3= p / p v 2 0gives the best fit to the observational data for the masses released from the impact and chop craters.  相似文献

The anomalously high number of craters with diameter less than 2.8 km, the igneous nature of rocks from the Apollo landing sites, and the possibility of outgassing magmas in the lunar crust, suggest that fluidization may be a viable mechanism for producing many of the smaller lunar craters, Fluidization craters were formed in the laboratory by blowing gas through various thicknesses of particulate material. Gas pressure, regolith thickness, and the duration of gas streaming were controlled over practical experimental limits and compared with the resultant crater morphology. Low to moderate fluidization pressures on coarsely crushed limestone (Mø = 0.40, So = =0.50) with low cohesion (ø - 43°) produced bowl shaped, basin shaped, and flat bottomed craters. Bowl shaped craters change into basin shaped and/or flat bottomed craters with long durations of gas streaming. Cone, funnel, and flat-funnel shaped craters are indicative of high fluidization pressures. Craters formed in finely crushed limestone (Mø - 1.55, So - 0.85) that is electrostatically charged by the streaming gas, are flat bottomed. Terraced craters develop from slumping during and after the discontinuation of gas flow. Central mounds inn terraced craters result from slumping into a confined space. In particulate material, fluidization craters have high circularity and axial symmetry, similar to those produced by impact. The use of an impact model and crater morphology (normal, flat bottomed, and concentric) for estimating lunar regolith depth is questioned because similar craters can be produced by fluidizationn processes in a thicker regolith. On leave at the Earth Physics Branch, Dept. of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa, Canada.  相似文献

The first part of the paper describes the relationship between the erosional stage of craters and the crater areal density. It is shown that class-2 and -3 craters are progressively more abundant as the crater areal density increases, while craters of class 4 and 5 are more abundant with decreasing crater areal densities. A geological model is proposed, in which the class of a newly foormed crater is 1. As time progresses, erosional agents will increase the class of the crater to class 2, then 3, and, in some cases, to 4. The length of time between classification steps is not known in terms of years, but is equivalent to the time necessary for the crater density to increase by 2 to 8 craters per unit area for creaters larger than 10 km, and by 10 to 20 for craters larger than 3.5 km. Craters of class 5 and some of class 4 are not formed by the same erosional agents, but are catastrophic, caused either by a mare-producing impact or by flooding of mare material. The second part of the paper presents a method for relatively dating large lunar areas. The method uses the model previously developed. A relative time sequence is constructed using the density of craters of classes 1, 2, and 3 and the percentage of these which is of class 1. As an example, 18 large areas are defined on the lunar near side and are put in temporal order. Mare Serenitatis appears to have the youngest terrain, and an area southwest of the Rupes Altai appears to have the oldest. In the final part of the paper a geological model is developed in order to explain age differences in the terrae. The model calls for rejuvenation of lunar terrains, caused by the seismic waves and ballistic sedimentation resulting from large impacts. The area surrounding Mare Orientale is cited as an example of a terrain so affected. A similar effect on the terrae of the near side could explain the apparent age relationships measured.  相似文献

The proximity effects in the light curves of close binary systems are investigated with the aid of facilities provided by a high-speed, digital computer. The treatment follows, to a large extent, that summarized by Kopal (1959) and makes extensive use of the alpha-functions and related integrals provided by that author. The ellipticity and reflection effects are studied individually and different expressions are checked and compared. Test data are drawn continually from the well known system SZ Cam for which a rectified (in a more realistic sense) light curve is ultimately produced.  相似文献

This paper discusses formation of pathological cases of crater morphology due to interaction of craters with molten lavas. Terrestrial observations of such a process are discussed. In lunar maria, a number of small impact craters (D < 10 km) may have been covered by thin layers of fluid lavas, or formed in molten lava. Some specific lunar examples are discussed, including unusual shallow rings resembling experimental craters deformed by isostatic filling.Paper dedicated to Professor Harold C. Lonar Crater is a young meteorite impact crater emplaced in Deccan basalt. Data from 5 drillholes, a gravity network, and field mapping are used to reconstruct its original dimensions, delineate the nature of the pre-impact target rocks, and interpret the emplacement mode of the ejecta. Our estimates of the pre-erosion dimensions are: average diameter of 1710 m; average rim height of 40 m (30–35 m of rim rock uplift, 5–10 m of ejected debris); depth of 230–245 m (from rim crest to crater floor). The crater's circularity index is 0.9 and is unlikely to have been lower in the past. There are minor irregularities in the original crater floor (present sediment-breccia boundary) possibly due to incipient rebound effects. A continuous ejecta blanket extends an average of 1410 m beyond the pre-erosion rim crest. In general, fresh terrestrial craters, less than 10 km in diameter, have smaller depth/diameter and larger rim height/diameter ratios than their lunar counterparts. Both ratios are intermediate for Mercurian craters, suggesting that crater shape is gravity dependent, all else being equal. Lonar demonstrates that all else is not always equal. Its depth/diameter ratio is normal but, because of less rim rock uplift, its rim height/diameter ratio is much smaller than both fresh terrestrial and lunar impact craters. The target rock column at Lonar consists of one or more layers of weathered, soft basalt capped by fresh, dense flows. Plastic deformation and/or compaction of this lower, incompetent material probably absorbed much of the energy normally available in the cratering process for rim rock uplift.A variety of features within the ejecta blanket and the immediately underlying substrate, plus the broad extent of the blanket boundaries, suggest that a fluidized debris surge was the dominant mechanism of ejecta transportation and deposition at Lonar. In these aspects, Lonar should be a good analog for the fluidized craters of Mars.  相似文献

Numerical simulations of the evolution of planets or massive satellites captured in the 2/1 and 3/1 resonances, under the action of an anti-dissipative tidal force. The evolution of resonant trapped bodies show a richness of solutions: librations around stationary symmetric solutions with aligned periapses ( = 0) or anti-aligned periapses ( = ), librations around stationary asymmetric solutions in which the periapses configuration is fixed, but with taking values in a wide range of angles. Many of these solutions exist for large values of the eccentricities and, during the semimajor axes drift, the solutions show turnabouts from one configuration to another. The presented results are valid for other non-conservative anti-dissipative forces leading to adiabatic convergent migration and capture into one of these resonances.  相似文献

We report here on high angular resolution observations of solar noise storm sources at a frequency of 75 MHz. The data for the study were obtained at the Gauribidanur Radio Observatory (long.: 77°2612 E, lat.: 13°3612 N) about 100 km north of Bangalore, India, during the solar eclipse of 24 October 1995. Our main conclusion is that there are structures of angular size 2.5 arc min in the outer solar corona.  相似文献

Nine Orbiter 3 high-resolution photographs were examined at three sites for distributions of boulders around craters 110 m in diameter; three kinds of distributions were noted. Some had boulders inside and far outside (designated), others had boulders only inside or on their ramparts (), and some had no detectable boulders (). Additionally, shapes or morphologies of craters were classified according to their resemblance to one of three Jaffe models (1965); a third classification involved the depth of particulate overlay (Jaffe, 1965). Crater morphologies were classified (A) if they were relatively shallow with sharp, raised rims, (B) if they were rimless and shallow, and (C) if they were relatively deep and had low, broad rims. The data suggested that there were strong relationships between crater types and boulder distributions in which, generally, A-type was related to the-distribution, B-type to-distribution, and C-type to-distribution. Plots of numbers of craters of each crater type and each kind of boulder distribution versus steps of overlay for each site and for the totality of craters considered indicated that neither boulder distribution nor crater type represented orderly progression of age or erosional evolution. The apparent overlays for the A's and C's and for the's and's were similar, implying similar ages or stages of erosion. It is suggested that they represent two kinds of primary craters and that the A's are of impact origin while the C's are of volcanic origin. The B's probably represent later stages of erosion of the C's and possibly of some A's.Now at the University of Maryland.Receipt delayed by postal strike in Great Britain.  相似文献

The use of hard-landing simple missions for wide-scale planetary exploration is considered. As an example of their imagery potentialities, Ranger VII data are used for the study of the morphological characteristics of 16 Mare Cognitum craters. The morphological patterns of lunar craters, expressed in terms of the Depth/Diameter ratios appear to be in most cases independent of the crater location or size.  相似文献

Material is ejected from impact craters in ballastic trajectories; it impacts first near the crater rim and then at progressively greater ranges. Ejecta from craters smaller than approximately 1 km is laid predominantly on top of the surrounding surface. With increasing crater size, however, more and more surrounding surface will be penetrated by secondary cratering action and these preexisting materials will be mixed with primary crater ejecta. Ejecta from large craters and especially basin forming events not only excavate preexisting, local materials, but also are capable of moving large amounts of material away from the crater. Thus mixing and lateral transport give rise to continuous deposits that contain materials from within and outside the primary crater. As a consequence ejecta of basins and large highland craters have eroded and mixed highland materials throughout geologic time and deposited them in depressions inside and between older crater structures.Because lunar mare surfaces contain few large craters, the mare regolith is built up by successive layers of predominantly primary ejecta. In contrast, the lunar highlands are dominated by the effects of large scale craters formed early in lunar history. These effects lead to thick fragmental deposits which are a mixture of primary crater material and local components. These deposits may also properly be named regolith though the term has been traditionally applied only to the relatively thin fine grained surficial deposit on mare and highland terranes generated during the past few billion year. We believe that the surficial highland regolith - generated over long periods of time - rests on massive fragmental units that have been produced during the early lunar history.  相似文献

D3 and H pictures of prominences were obtained with a 21-in. Lyot coronograph and a Fabry-Perot etalon used as a narrow band filter. The monochromatic images of quiescent, quasiquiescent and loop-prominences were studied. The comparison of the isophotes of quiescent and quasi-quiescent prominences in D3 with those in H shows the similarity of the prominence structure at both wavelength, although there is a strong tendency for an increase in the intensity ratio D3/H in the upper region of prominences. It seems that it is due to lower temperature in the upper regions of prominences. Probably, the relaxation processes establishing ionization equilibrium play some role. Measurements of the knot intensities of the loop-prominence show strong variations of the intensity ratio D3/H (more than one order of magnitude).  相似文献

We derive the distribution and covariance function of elevations on a cratered planetary surface from a representation of the surface as the moving average of a random point process. It is assumed that an initially plane surface is excavated by primary impact craters with an inverse-power law size distribution. Crater rim height and rim-to-floor depth are assumed to be power functions of crater diameter. Crater shapes studied include rimless cylinders and paraboloidal bowls, and paraboloidal bowls with power-law external rims and ejecta blanket. The inverse-power law diameter distribution induces a positively skewed stable law elevation distribution, with heavy inverse-power law tails whose exponent (for small craters) is two smaller than the crater diameter distribution exponent. The covariance function (equivalently, power spectral density) is shown to be a power-law at moderate distances, whose exponent also depends on the parameters of the cratering process. Observations of lunar elevations and elevation spectral densities on a meter scale agree well with theory. This work summarizes and extends Bellcomm Technical Reports TR-68-340-3, 4, 5, which were supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Contract NASw-417.Now at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md.  相似文献

The analysis of solar wind He++ and H+ ion distribution functions, collected over five months by the satellite Prognoz 1, shows that these are in general maxwellian but that often tails appear at higher speeds. The existing relation V-T, the observation of ratios of T/Tp 3.83 and V/Vp 1.035 give evidence of preferential He++ ion heating and acceleration. The criteria for heating by dissipation of hydromagnetic waves proposed by Barnes and Hung (1973) are tested experimentally. Finally, multifluid models are likely to predict certain observations such as dependence of the velocity ratio V/Vp on the solar wind flux.  相似文献

The angular size-redshift test for quasars was compared with various cosmological models including non standard models. The possible effects of radio source orientation and relativistic beaming were taken into account in the analysis. It was found that orientation effects alone were not sufficient to explain the observed-z relation in terms of Friedmann models. In addition, linear size evolution of the formD ~ (1 +z)n , with 0.75 n 1.2 would be required for 0 1.0, or possibly an inverse correlation between luminosity and linear size. The non-standard cosmological models all gave better fits to the deprojected data than the Friedmann models in the absence of evolutionary effects, with the tired light effect providing the best fit.  相似文献

A time series of K3 spectroheliograms taken at the Coimbra Observatory exhibits an erupting loop on the east limb on July 9, 1982 in active region NOAA 3804. The Goddard SMM Hard X-Ray Burst Spectrometer (HXRBS) observations taken during this period reveal a hard X-ray flare occurring just before the loop eruption is observed, and SMS-GOES soft X-ray observations reveal a strong long-duration event (LDE) following the impulsive phase of the flare. A Solwind coronagram exhibits a powerful coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with the erupting loop. H flare and prominence observations as well as centimeter and decimeter radio observations of the event are also reviewed. A large, north–south-oriented quiescent prominence reported within the upper part of the CME expansion region may play a role in the eruption as well. The spatial and temporal correlations among these observations are examined in the light of two different current models for prominence eruption and CME activation: (1) The CME is triggered by the observed hard X-ray impulsive flare. (2) The CME is not triggered by a flare, and the observed soft X-ray flare is an LDE due to reconnection within the CME bubble. It is concluded that this event is probably of a mixed type that combines characteristics of models (1) and (2). The July 9 event is then compared to three other energetic CME and flare eruptions associated with the same active-region complex, all occurring in the period July 9 through September 4, 1982. It is noted that these four energetic events coincide with the final evolutionary phase of a long-lasting active-region complex, which is discussed in a companion paper (Bumba, Garcia, and Jordan, 1997). The paper concludes by addressing the solar flare myth controversy in the light of this work.  相似文献
