Abstract: The Ashele Cu-Zn deposit is a recently discovered volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit in Xinjiang, Northwestern China. It is the largest Cu-Zn deposit in this type of deposits in China, which were formed in the early period of later Palaeozoic Era. This deposit is hosted within a suit of bimodal submarine volcanic rocks of the Ashele Formation of Lower-Middle Devonian System formed in an environment of paleocontinental margin rift setting. Lensoid orebodies occur between spilitic rocks developed at footwall and quartz-keratophyric tuff at hanging wall. Zonation of metal elements in the Ashele mine is one of typical volcanic-related exhalative Cu-Zn sulfide deposits in the world. Black ores enriched in Pb, Zn and Ag occurs on the top of the No. 1 orebody in the Ashele deposit, yellow ores enriched in Cu in the middle part, and the chalcopyritization stringer below the massive sulfide ores. Zonation of ore-structure in the No. 1 orebody is also apparent and corresponds to the zoning of elements, i. e. lamellar and/or banded sulfide-sulfate ores on the top, massive sulfide ores in the middle, and stockwork veinlets associated with altered breccia pipe on the bottom. Four epochs of mineralization in the Ashele deposit has been recognized. The first period of syngenetic-exhalative deposition of sulfides is the main epoch of mineralization, and the ores deposited subsequently subjected to thermo-metamorphism at the second epoch, superimposed by hydrothermal mineralization at the third epoch, and weathered or oxidized at the fourth epoch.
More than 100 categories of minerals have been recognized in the Ashele mine, but only pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, galena, barite, quartz, chlorite, sericite, and calcite are dominant, making up various types of ores, and alteration pipes or horizons. Studies of ore petrology suggest that the massive ores were volcanogenic and deposited by exhalative process.

The Barite Hill gold deposit, at the southwestern end of the Carolina slate belt in the southeastern United States, is one of four gold deposits in the region that have a combined yield of 110 metric tons of gold over the past 10 years. At Barite Hill, production has dominantly come from oxidized ores. Sulfur isotope data from hypogene portions of the Barite Hill gold deposit vary systematically with pyrite–barite associations and provide insights into both the pre-metamorphic Late Proterozoic hydrothermal and the Paleozoic regional metamorphic histories of the deposit. The δ34S values of massive barite cluster tightly between 25.0 and 28.0‰, which closely match the published values for Late Proterozoic seawater and thus support a seafloor hydrothermal origin. The δ34S values of massive sulfide range from 1.0 to 5.3‰ and fall within the range of values observed for modern and ancient seafloor hydrothermal sulfide deposits. In contrast, δ34S values for finer-grained, intergrown pyrite (5.1–6.8‰) and barite (21.0–23.9‰) are higher and lower than their massive counterparts, respectively. Calculated sulfur isotope temperatures for the latter barite–pyrite pairs (Δ=15.9–17.1‰) range from 332–355 °C and probably reflect post-depositional equilibration at greenschist-facies regional metamorphic conditions. Thus, pyrite and barite occurring separately from one another provide pre-metamorphic information about the hydrothermal origin of the deposit, whereas pyrite and barite occurring together equilibrated to record the metamorphic conditions. Preliminary fluid inclusion data from sphalerite are consistent with a modified seawater source for the mineralizing fluids, but data from quartz and barite may reflect later metamorphic and (or) more recent meteoric water input. Lead isotope values from pyrites range for 206Pb/204Pb from 18.005–18.294, for 207Pb/204Pb from 15.567–15.645, and for 208Pb/204Pb from 37.555–38.015. The data indicate derivation of the ore leads from the country rocks, which themselves show evidence for contributions from relatively unradiogenic, mantle-like lead, and more evolved or crustal lead. Geological relationships, and stable and radiogenic isotopic data, suggest that the Barite Hill gold deposit formed on the Late Proterozoic seafloor through exhalative hydrothermal processes similar to those that were responsible for the massive sulfide deposits of the Kuroko district, Japan. On the basis of similarities with other gold-rich massive sulfide deposits and modern seafloor hydrothermal systems, the gold at Barite Hill was probably introduced as an integral part of the formation of the massive sulfide deposit. The ore types of the Zhaokalong Fe-Cu deposit are divided into two categories: sulfide-type and oxide-type. The sulfide-type ore include siderite ore, galena-sphalerite ore and chalcopyrite ore, whereas the oxide-type ore include magnetite ore and hematite ore. The ore textures and structures indicate that the Zhaokalong deposit is of the sedimentary-exhalative mineralization type. Geochemical analyses show that the two ore types have a high As, Sb, Mn, Co and Ni content. The REE patterns reveal an enrichment of the LREE compared to the HREE. Isotopic analysis of siderite ore reveal that the δ13CPDB ranges from 2.01 to 3.34 (‰) whereas the δ18O SMOW ranges from 6.96 to 18.95 (‰). The fluid inclusion microthermometry results indicate that homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions in quartz range from 131 to 181℃, with salinity values of 1.06 to 8.04 wt% NaCl eq. The mineralizing fluid therefore belongs to the low temperature - low salinity system, with a mineralizing solution of a CO2-Ca2+(Na+, K+)-SO42-(F-, Cl-)-H2O system. The geochemical results and fluid inclusion data provide additional evidence that the Zhaokalong deposit is a sedex-type deposit that experienced two stages of mineralization. The sulfide mineralization probably occurred first, during the sedimentary exhalative process, as exhibited by the abundance of marine materials associated with the sulfide ores, indicating a higher temperature and relatively deoxidized oceanic depositional environment. After the main exhalative stage, hydrothermal activity was superimposed to the sulfide mineralization. The later stage oxide mineralization occurred in a low temperature and relatively oxidized environment, in which magmatic fluid circulation was dominant.

The El Cobre deposit is located in eastern Cuba within the volcanosedimentary sequence of the Sierra Maestra Paleogene arc. The deposit is hosted by tholeiitic basalts, andesites and tuffs and comprises thick stratiform barite and anhydrite bodies, three stratabound disseminated up to massive sulphide bodies produced by silicification and sulphidation of limestones or sulphates, an anhydrite stockwork and a siliceous stockwork, grading downwards to quartz veins. Sulphides are mainly pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite; gold occurs in the stratabound ores. Fluid inclusions measured in sphalerite, quartz, anhydrite and calcite show salinities between 2.3 and 5.7 wt% NaCl eq. and homogenisation temperatures between 177 and 300°C. Sulphides from the stratabound mineralisation display δ 34S values of 0‰ to +6.0‰, whilst those from the feeder zone lie between −1.4‰ and +7.3‰. Sulphides show an intra-grain sulphur isotope zonation of about 2‰; usually, δ 34S values increase towards the rims. Sulphate sulphur has δ 34S in the range of +17‰ to +21‰, except two samples with values of +5.9‰ and +7.7‰. Sulphur isotope data indicate that the thermochemical reduction of sulphate from a hydrothermal fluid of seawater origin was the main source of sulphide sulphur and that most of the sulphates precipitated by heating of seawater. The structure of the deposit, mineralogy, fluid inclusion and isotope data suggest that the deposit formed from seawater-derived fluids with probably minor supply of magmatic fluids.

The western Tianshan metallogenic belt is one of the most significant polymetallic iron metallogenic belts in China. Important advances have been achieved recently in iron exploration in the Awulale Mountain in western Tianshan, China. These newly-discovered iron deposits are mainly hosted in the basic-medium andesitic lavas and volcaniclastics, often comprising a number of high-grade ores. Magnetite is predominated in ore mineral assemblages, and pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite or sphalerite increase in certain deposits. Wallrock alterations are intensively developed, exemplified as sodic–calcic and potassic alterations which display in different patterns as country rocks and ore-controlled structures vary. Skarn assemblages are commonly developed in ore districts like Beizhan, Dunde and Chagangnuoer, and pyroxene + albite + K-feldspar  epidote + actinolite alterations are dominated around ore bodies in Zhibo deposit, whereas the Shikebutai deposit develops alteration assemblages comprising of jasper, barite, sericite, and chlorite. Thus, iron deposits can be divided into three types including volcanic-sedimentary type, volcanic magmatic-hydrothermal type and iron skarn type. Our preliminary interpretation about the tectonic background of this iron mineralization in this area is in the late stage of a collisional–accretional orogenic belt around Carboniferous, with some extrusional–extensional tectonic transition locally. Iron mineralization is likely to have a close genetic relationship with volcanic–subvolcanic activity, syn- or slightly post- the volcanism which took place besides continental arc. Volcanic eruption contributes to majority of mineralizing iron, with minor extracted from hydrothermal replacement from wall rocks.

Mineral assemblages, chemical compositions of ore minerals, wall rock alteration and fluid inclusions of the Gatsuurt gold deposit in the North Khentei gold belt of Mongolia were investigated to characterize the gold mineralization, and to clarify the genetic processes of the ore minerals. The gold mineralization of the deposit occurs in separate Central and Main zones, and is characterized by three ore types: (i) low‐grade disseminated and stockwork ores; (ii) moderate‐grade quartz vein ores; and (iii) high‐grade silicified ores, with average Au contents of approximately 1, 3 and 5 g t?1 Au, respectively. The Au‐rich quartz vein and silicified ore mineralization is surrounded by, or is included within, the disseminated and stockwork Au‐mineralization region. The main ore minerals are pyrite (pyrite‐I and pyrite‐II) and arsenopyrite (arsenopyrite‐I and arsenopyrite‐II). Moderate amounts of galena, tetrahedrite‐tennantite, sphalerite and chalcopyrite, and minor jamesonite, bournonite, boulangerite, geocronite, scheelite, geerite, native gold and zircon are associated. Abundances and grain sizes of the ore minerals are variable in ores with different host rocks. Small grains of native gold occur as fillings or at grain boundaries of pyrite, arsenopyrite, sphalerite, galena and tetrahedrite in the disseminated and stockwork ores and silicified ores, whereas visible native gold of variable size occurs in the quartz vein ores. The ore mineralization is associated with sericitic and siliceous alteration. The disseminated and stockwork mineralization is composed of four distinct stages characterized by crystallization of (i) pyrite‐I + arsenopyrite‐I, (ii) pyrite‐II + arsenopyrite‐II, (iii) galena + tetrahedrite + sphalerite + chalcopyrite + jamesonite + bournonite + scheelite, and iv) boulangerite + native gold, respectively. In the quartz vein ores, four crystallization stages are also recognized: (i) pyrite‐I, (ii) pyrite‐II + arsenopyrite + galena + Ag‐rich tetrahedrite‐tennantite + sphalerite + chalcopyrite + bournonite, (iii) geocronite + geerite + native gold, and (iv) native gold. Two mineralization stages in the silicified ores are characterized by (i) pyrite + arsenopyrite + tetrahedrite + chalcopyrite, and (ii) galena + sphalerite + native gold. Quartz in the disseminated and stockwork ores of the Main zone contains CO2‐rich, halite‐bearing aqueous fluid inclusions with homogenization temperatures ranging from 194 to 327°C, whereas quartz in the disseminated and stockwork ores of the Central zone contains CO2‐rich and aqueous fluid inclusions with homogenization temperatures ranging from 254 to 355°C. The textures of the ores, the mineral assemblages present, the mineralization sequences and the fluid inclusion data are consistent with orogenic classification for the Gatsuurt deposit.

The Bayan Obo Fe-REE-Nb deposit in northern China is the world's largest light REE deposit, and also contains considerable amounts of iron and niobium metals. Although there are numerous studies on the REE mineralization, the origin of the Fe mineralization is not well known. Laser ablation (LA) ICP-MS is used to obtain trace elements of Fe oxides in order to better understand the process involved in the formation of magnetite and hematite associated with the formation of the giant REE deposit. There are banded, disseminated and massive Fe ores with variable amounts of magnetite and hematite at Bayan Obo. Magnetite and hematite from the same ores show similar REE patterns and have similar Mg, Ti, V, Mn, Co, Ni, Zn, Ga, Sn, and Ba contents, indicating a similar origin. Magnetite grains from the banded ores have Al + Mn and Ti + V contents similar to those of banded iron formations (BIF), whereas those from the disseminated and massive ores have Al + Mn and Ti + V contents similar to those of skarn deposits and other types of magmatic-hydrothermal deposits. Magnetite grains from the banded ores with a major gangue mineral of barite have the highest REE contents and show slight moderate REE enrichment, whereas those from other types of ores show light REE enrichment, indicating two stages of REE mineralization associated with Fe mineralization. The Bayan Obo deposit had multiple sources for Fe and REEs. It is likely that sedimentary carbonates provided original REEs and were metasomatized by REE-rich hydrothermal fluids to form the giant REE deposit.

The Luojiahe Cu deposit in the Zhongtiaoshan region is located in the southern margin of the North China Craton. The orebodies are hosted in the mafic volcanic-sedimentary sequences of the metamorphosed (greenschist-facies) Neoarchean Songjiashan Group. The Luojiahe Cu mineralization can be divided into the primary volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) mineralization stage (Stage I, banded or stockwork ores) and the subsequent metamorphic remobilization stage (Stage II, coarse-vein ores).Three types of quartz selected for fluid inclusion (FI) studies were collected from the Stage I banded (Q1) and stockwork (Q2) ores and Stage II coarse-vein (Q3) ores. Four types of FIs were identified: (1) liquid-rich FIs (L-type), (2) pure vapor and vapor-rich FIs (V-type), (3) daughter mineral-bearing FIs (S-type), and (4) CH4-H2O FIs (C-type). Systematical microthermometric and H-O isotopic studies show that the Stage I ore-forming fluids consist predominantly of high salinity evolved seawater (125–220 °C; 23.9–27.9 wt.% NaCl equiv.) and some magmatic-hydrothermal fluids (249–339 °C; 34.5–42.2 wt.% NaCl equiv.). The two fluid end-members are represented by the L-type FIs in Q1 and the S- and V-type FIs in Q2. The temperature- and salinity variation trends of the L-type FIs in Q1 indicate a mixing process between the hot evolved seawater and cold seawater at Stage I. Furthermore, the V- and S-type FI coexistence in Q2 and their microthermometric data suggest that fluid unmixing has occurred in original magmatic fluids at Stage I. In contrast, the Stage II ore-forming fluids consist of CH4-rich metamorphic fluids (192–350 °C; 10.6–43.2 wt.% NaCl equiv.). Carbon isotopic analysis of the Stage II calcite (− 4.58 to − 10.83‰) and graphite (− 32.01 to − 39.16‰) in the ore-hosting chlorite schist indicates that the metamorphic ore-forming fluids had exchanged carbon isotope with graphite. The generation of CH4 may have resulted from the interaction between H2O (released by metamorphic devolatilization) and graphite. The continuous consumption of H2O in the hydrothermal fluid system may have increased the fluid salinity and triggered fluid unmixing in the CH4-NaCl-H2O system. In addition, the VMS metallogenic environment is generally favorable for microbial communities. It is considered that the graphite at Luojiahe may have been derived from sedimentary organic matter formed in seafloor hydrothermal vent systems, as also supported by carbon isotopic data.We propose that at Stage I, the main mineralization may have been resulted from 1) fluid mixing of hot evolved seawater and cold seawater in the near-surface environment; and 2) fluid unmixing caused by the percolation of magmatic fluids into syn-volcanic faults, forming the stockwork ores. At Stage II, the interaction between H2O and graphite may have resulted in the reduction of ore-forming fluids and Cu precipitation, and fluid unmixing in the CH4-NaCl-H2O system may have further promoted the Cu mineralization.

The Bugdaya Au-bearing W-Mo porphyry deposit, Eastern Transbaikal Region, Russia, is located in the central part of volcanic dome and hosted in the large Variscan granitic pluton. In its characteristics, this is a Climax-type deposit, or an Mo porphyry deposit of rhyolitic subclass. The enrichment in gold is related to the relatively widespread vein and veinlet gold-base-metal mineralization. More than 70 minerals (native metals, sulfides, sulfosalts, tellurides, oxides, molybdates, wolframates, carbonates, and sulfates) have been identified in stockwork and vein ores, including dzhalindite, greenockite, Mo-bearing stolzite, Ag and Au amalgams, stromeyerite, cervelleite, and berryite identified here for the first time. Four stages of mineral formation are recognized. The earliest preore stage in form of potassic alteration and intense silicification developed after emplacement of subvolcanic rhyolite (granite) porphyry stock. The stockwork and vein W-Mo mineralization of the quartz-molybdenite stage was the next. Sericite alteration, pyritization, and the subsequent quartz-sulfide veins and veinlets with native gold, base-metal sulfides, and various Ag-Cu-Pb-Bi-Sb sulfosalts of the gold-base-metal stage were formed after the rearrangement of regional pattern of tectonic deformation. The hydrothermal process was completed by argillic (kaolinite-smectite) assemblage of the postore stage. The fluid inclusion study (microthermometry and Raman spectroscopy) allowed us to establish that the stockwork W-Mo mineralization was formed at 550–380°C from both the highly concentrated Mg-Na chloride solution (brine) and the low-density gas with significant N2 and H2S contents. The Pb-Zn vein ore of the gold-base-metal stage enriched in Au, Ag, Bi, and other rare metals was deposited at 360–140°C from a homogeneous Na-K chloride (hydrocarbonate, sulfate) hydrothermal solution of medium salinity.

The Mount Mulgine Trench deposit is a large, low grade W-Mo resource in Archaean greenstone-granitoid terrain in the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia. The mineralization occupies a quartz vein stockwork zone in a sequence of altered meta-basalts and banded iron formations. The nearby Hill deposit is hosted by a quartzmuscovite greisen on the margin of the synkinematic Mulgine Granite. Fluid inclusion studies show mineralization of the Trench deposit formed over a wide range of temperatures (approximately 500° to 260°C) from a fluid dominated by CaCl2. Scheelite is the dominant W mineral and fluid inclusion data indicate deposition at temperatures of about 420° to 360°C from a fluid containing about 16 wt% CaCl2 equivalent. Field relationships and sulphur isotope studies indicate a magmatic hydrothermal origin related to the Mulgine Granite. Fractures formed during intrusion of the granite provided channels for fluid migration and sites for mineral deposition. Controlling factors on mineral deposition may have been the temperature gradient away from the cooling granite and an increase in a Ca 2 resulting from fluid/rock interaction.

The Shilu deposit is a world-class Fe–Co–Cu orebody located in the Changjiang area of the western part of Hainan Island, South China. The distribution of Fe, Co, and Cu orebodies is controlled by strata of the No. 6 Formation in the Shilu Group and the Beiyi synclinorium. Based on a petrological study of the host rocks and their alteration assemblages, and textural and structural features of the ores, four mineralization stages have been identified: (1) the sedimentary ore-forming period; (2) the metamorphic ore-forming period; (3) the hydrothermal mineralization comprising the skarn and quartz–sulfide stage; and (4) the supergene period. The fluid inclusions in sedimentary quartz and/or chert indicate low temperatures (ca. 160 °C) and low salinities from 0.7 to 3.1 wt.% NaCleq, which corresponds to densities of 0.77 to 0.93 g/cm3. CO2-bearing or carbonic inclusions have been interpreted to result from regional metamorphism. Homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions for the skarn stage have a wide range from 148 °C to 497 °C and the salinities of the fluid inclusions range from 1.2 to 22.3 wt.% NaCleq, which corresponds to densities from 0.56 to 0.94 g/cm3. Fluid inclusions of the quartz–sulfide stage yield homogenization temperatures of 151–356 °C and salinities from 0.9 to 8.1 wt.% NaCleq, which equates to fluid densities from 0.63 to 0.96 g/cm3.Sulfur isotopic compositions indicate that sulfur of the sedimentary anhydrite and Co-bearing pyrite, and the quartz–sulfide stage, was derived from seawater sulfate and thermochemical sulfate reduction of dissolved anhydrite at temperatures of 200 °C and 300 °C, respectively. H and O isotopic compositions of the skarn and quartz–sulfide stage demonstrate that the ore-forming fluids were largely derived from magmatic water, with minor inputs from metamorphic or meteoric water. The Shilu iron ore deposit has an exhalative sedimentary origin, but has been overprinted by regional deformation and metamorphism. The Shilu Co–Cu deposit has a hydrothermal origin and is temporally and genetically associated with Indosinian granitoid rocks.

The Godar Sabz Mn deposit is located in the Nain-Baft ophiolitic belt in the northeast margin of the Sanandaj-Sirjan zone, Iran. The Nain-Baft back-arc extensional basin resulted from the subduction of the oceanic crust of Neo-Tethys under the southern margin of the Iranian Plate in the Early Cretaceous and hosts several mineral deposits, including volcanogenic massive sulfide, chromite, and Mn deposits. The mineralization in the Godar Sabz Mn deposit occurred predominantly as stratabound, massive, banded, layered, and lenticular orebodies in radiolarian cherts within Baft ophiolitic complex. The main ore minerals are pyrolusite, braunite, with minor amounts of todorokite. The significant geochemical features of the Godar Sabz ores, such as the high MnO content (21.82–80.65 wt%, average = 64.91 wt%), high Mn/Fe (average = 278), Si/Al ratios (average = 92.6), high Ba contents (average = 4495.6 ppm), the low average contents of Cu (81.8 ppm), Ni (106.2 ppm), Co (29.4 ppm), LREE > HREE, and trace element discrimination diagrams indicate a hydrothermal-exhalative source for mineralization. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns of studied ores have negative Ce and slightly positive Eu anomalies, which are similar to hydrothermal Mn deposits. The REE patterns of Mn ores coincide with basaltic lavas, suggesting that the Mn-mineralization in the Godar Sabz deposit was genetically related to the leaching of basaltic lavas. The Godar Sabz Mn deposit has many similarities with the main characteristics of the hydrothermal exhalative Mn deposits, including tectonic setting, host rock type, the morphology of orebodies, ore textures, mineralogy, and chemical features of ores.
