The emergent flux for radiation transfer in an inhomogeneous half-space with internal source is obtained in terms of the source-function of the diffuse reflection problem. Modified Eddington method is used to calculate the diffuse problem and, hence, the emergent flux. Future space missions to the outer planets may depend upon the use of low-thrust propulsion systems. As these planets are decidedly oblate, the question of the effect of that oblateness on a low-thrust trajectory is of some interest. In this paper the problem of optimal energy increase is attacked under the assumption that the coefficients for the second zonal harmonic, i.e.,J 2, and the nondimensional thrust acceleration are the same order of magnitude. Using a two variable asymptotic expansion technique, a near optimal control program is generated and the first order uniformly valid approximation for the corresponding trajectory is obtained. Tangential thrust is shown to be a good near-optimal thrust program even in the presence of oblateness effects. The optimal control program is found to be oscillatory and quite similar to the optimal control for energy increase in an inverse square gravitational field.This research was supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under Grant NGR-23-005-329.  相似文献

The response of a one dimensional isothermal atmosphere with rigid lower boundary and bounded upward by a very hot isothermal atmosphere to an applied random source is studied. It is shown that a concentrated white noise source merely excites the damped eigen-modes of the model and that the enhanced response at the cut-off frequency found in semi-infinite isothermal model is removed by the reflections. We believe that this rules out the attempts to relate the photospheric and chromospheric oscillations to the singular response of an excited semi-infinite isothermal atmosphere.  相似文献

In this paper we give a new method to construct formal integrals for an autonomous Hamiltonian system near an equilibrium point. Our construction is reminiscent of the algorithms introduced by Hori and Deprit; we show however how it presents itself quite naturally if one follows the line of attack of Whittaker, Cherry, and Contopoulos.  相似文献

The effect of a transverse magnetic field on unsteady free-convection flow of an electrically conducting elasto-viscous fluid (Walters liquidB') past an impulsively started infinite vertical plate is discussed. The Laplace transform technique is used to obtain the expressions for velocity and shearing stress. Abstract— In oblique impacts with an impact angle under 45°, the bilateral shape of the distal ejecta blanket is used as the strongest indicator for an impact vector. This bilateral symmetry is attenuated and is superimposed by radial symmetry towards the crater rim, which remains circular for impact angles down to 10–15°. The possibility that remnants of bilateral symmetry might still be present in the most proximal ejecta, the overturned flap and the crater rim was explored with the intention of deducing an impact vector. A model is presented that postulates bilateral patterns using proximal ejecta trajectories and predicts these patterns in the orientation of bedding planes in the crater rim. This model was successfully correlated to patterns described by radial grooves in the proximal ejecta blanket of the oblique Tooting crater on Mars. A new method was developed to detect structural asymmetries by converting bedding data into values that express the deviation from concentric strike orientation in the crater rim relative to the crater center, termed “concentric deviation.” The method was applied to field data from Wolfe Creek crater, Western Australia. Bedding in the overturned flap implies an impactor striking from the east, which refines earlier publications, while bedding from the inner rim shows a correlation with the crater rim morphology.  相似文献

The paper analyzes an experiment in an orbiting laboratory to determine the gravitational constantG. A massive sphere, according to a suggestion of L. S. Wilk, is to have three tunnels drilled through it along mutually perpendicular diameters. The sphere either floats in the orbiting laboratory, with its center held fixed by means of external jets issuing from the spacecraft, or is tethered to the spacecraft. In either case it is free to rotate; in the second case this freedom would be achieved by a system of gimbals.Each tunnel contains a small test object, which is held on the tunnel's axis by means of a suspension system, perhaps electrostatic, and held at rest relative to the sphere by slowly rotating the latter by means of inertia reaction wheels, governed by a servomechanism. Fundamentally, one balances the gravitational forces on the test objects by centrifugal force, determines the latter by measuring the components of angular velocity, and calculatesG from the resulting balance. It is better to use three tunnels than one because their use minimizes the effects of the Earth's gravity-gradient.Many other measurements and corrections are required. The latter arise from Earth gravity-gradient, aerodynamic drag (with the tethered sphere), gravitational forces produced by the spacecraft itself, and the force reductions produced by the empty space in all three tunnels. After the consideration of these effects there is a presentation and discussion of the equations required to reduce the observations to obtainG. There then follow the extra equations, not needed in the reduction, that are required for a computer simulation to investigate the possible extraction of a test object and to aid in designing the servomechanisms.In Appendix B, I have devised another version of the experiment, in which the sphere is kept intact, but has short thin hollow vestigial tunnels attached to the outside of the sphere, along perpendicular diameters. These external tunnels would contain the test objects and the suspension systems. The servomechanisms would then have to prevent collision of a test object with the sphere, as well as extraction. This second method could allow for some inhomogeneities in the sphere, would require no accurate drilling, and would make the suspension systems more accessible for construction and adjustment.This paper was prepared under the sponsorship of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration through NASA Contract NAS 9-8328.  相似文献

The interaction between an artificially produced narrow beam of electrons and the upper atmosphere has been studied by the POLAR 5 electron accelerator “mother”-“daughter” rocket. It is shown how the beam develops a “halo” of scattered electrons and how the low energy electron population in this “halo” is produced partly during the ionization process (at low altitudes), partly by a “wave-plasma” interaction which accelerates the ionospheric background electrons.  相似文献

An analysis of the effect of a magnetic field on the free convective flow of an incompressible, electrically conducting and viscous fluid past an infinite vertical limiting surface, has been carried out. Also the limiting surface are unmoving, we have constant heat flux at the limiting surface, the free velocity is constant and the magnetic Reynolds number is not small. I discuss our current understanding of the spin states of cometary nuclei. Cometary spin influences the temporal and spatial patterns of outgassing from the nucleus (through diurnal and seasonal effects) and is in turn influenced by outgassing-driven torques. The current challenge to cometary astronomers is to quantify the interactions between the spin, the outgassing, and the resultant torques on the nucleus, and to understand the role of rotation in determining the basic physical properties of the nucleus. At the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR)(Planet. Space Sci. (2004) these proceedings) frequencies (HF/VHF), extraterrestrial radiation experiences substantial propagation delay as it passes through the ionosphere. The adaptive calibration technique to be employed by LOFAR will use signals from many known bright radio sources in the sky to estimate and remove the effects of this delay. This technique will operate along many simultaneous lines of sight for each of the stations. Measurements will be made on time scales of seconds or shorter, and with accuracies corresponding to path length variations of 1 cm or less. Tomographic techniques can be used to invert the thousands of changing and independent total electron content (TEC) measurements produced by LOFAR into three-dimensional electron density specifications above the array. These specifications will measure spatial and time scales significantly smaller and faster than anything currently available. These specifications will be used to investigate small-scale ionospheric irregularities, equatorial plasma structures, and ionospheric waves. In addition, LOFAR will improve the understanding of the solar drivers of the ionosphere by simultaneously measuring the solar radio bursts and the TEC. Finally, LOFAR, which will be situated to observed the galactic plane, will make continuous, high-resolution observations of the low-latitude ionosphere, an important but under-observed region. This paper will look at LOFAR as an ionospheric probe including comparisons to other ionospheric probes as well as possible methods of operation to optimize ionospheric measurements.  相似文献

The motion of a particle orbiting a planet is investigated when both the gravitational attraction of the planet and the radial radiation force due to the Sun are taken into account. Because of this latter force, we introduce a rotating frame so as to maintain the Sun at fixed coordinates.We establish that the secular problem, which has two degrees of freedom, is completely integrable and that it possesses only periodical solutions.An explicit analytical solution is provided.  相似文献

Since the Randall-Sundrum 1999 papers, braneworlds have been a favourite playground to test string inspired cosmological models. The subject has developped into two main directions: elaborating more complex models in order to strenghten the connection with string theories, and trying to confront them with observations, in particular the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies. We review here the latter and see that, even in the simple, `paradigmatic', case of a single expanding brane in a 5D anti-de Sitter bulk, there is still a missing link between the `view from the brane' and the `view from the bulk' which prevents definite predictions.
