Rocket measurements of absolute intensities in the solar X-ray spectrum on November 4, 1964 around 16:35 UT yield the following results : 1.8·10-2 erg cm-2 sec-1 (wavelength band 44–60 Å); and 1.5·10-3 erg cm-2 sec-1 (wavelength band 8–15Å). These values were obtained under nearly quiet minimum conditions of the sun.  相似文献

Soft X-rays (0.2–1.0 keV) have been detected from the high galactic latitude source MX 2140-60 in a rocket experiment. The measured flux of 10–10 erg cm–2 s–1 combined with OSO-7 measurements in 2–40 keV X-rays, are best fit by a power law photon spectrum with spectral index 2.3 and a neutral hydrogen column densityN H=(3–7) 1020 atoms cm–2. The observations support the source identification with the cluster of galaxies SC 2146-594, as suggested by Lugger.  相似文献

The diffuse far UV radiation ( 1350–1480 Å) observed in the sky region ofl II180°, 0°b II40° is analyzed in connection with the distributions of stars and dust grains as well as with optical properties of grains. Its intensity (starlight+scattered light) is about 6×10–7 erg cm–2 sec–1 sr–1 Å–1 in the direction ofb II0° andl II180°. The latitude dependence of the intensity is in approximate agreement with the plane parallel slab model of the galaxy with a reasonable set of parameters. The interstellar scattering gives an albedo close to unity and forward phase function of about 0.6, which are not inconsistent with the model of interstellar grains of Wickramasinghe. The upper limit of the extragalactic UV is 2×10–8 erg cm–2 sec–1 sr–1 Å–1 in the same region of wave-length.  相似文献

An impulsive burst of 100–400 keV solar X-rays associated with a small solar flare was observed on October 10, 1970 with a large area scintillator aboard a balloon floating at an altitude of 4.2 g cm-2 above the Earth's surface. The X-ray burst was also observed simultaneously in 10–80 keV range by the OGO-5 satellite and in 8–20 Å range by the SOLRAD-9 satellite. The impulsive X-ray emission reached its maximum at 1643 UT at which time the differential photon spectrum in 20–80 keV range was of the form 2.3 × 104 E -3.2 photons cm-2 s-1 keV-1 at 1 AU. The event is attributed to a H-subflare located approximately at S13, E88 on the solar disc. The spectral characteristics of this event are examined in the light of the earlier X-ray observations of small solar flares.  相似文献

A 25 hr exposure of the ring nebula NGC 6888 was obtained with the EXOSAT X-ray Observatory. X-ray emission of the nebula was not found. Taking all instrumental effects and the large nebular area into account, a conservative upper limit of 1×10–12 erg s–1 cm–2 (0.05–2 keV) is derived. This is about an order of magnitude less than predicted from braking the stellar wind of the central star HD 192163. Two point sources were serendipitously found in the field, HD 192163 and HD 192020.  相似文献

Near solar maximum, hard X-ray microflares with peak 20 keV fluxes of 10–2 (cm2 s keV)–1, more than ten times smaller than for typical flares and subflares, can occur at the rate of about once every five minutes. We report here on a search for hard X-ray microflares made on a long duration balloon flight in February 1987 near solar minimum, at a time when no active regions were on the Sun. No microflares were observed over a total observing time of 16.5 hours spread over three days, implying a statistical upper limit to their rate of occurrence about a factor often lower than observed near solar maximum. Thus hard X-ray microflaring appears to be an active region phenomenon, and apparently not associated with flaring of soft X-ray bright points.  相似文献

We describe an imaging telescope for observations of celestial sources in the energy range between 30 keV and 1.8 MeV onboard stratospheric balloons. The detector is a 41 cm diameter, 5 cm thick NaI(Tl) crystal coupled to 19 photomultipliers in an Anger camera configuration. It is surrounded by a plastic scintillator 15 cm thick on the sides, 0.2 cm thick at the top and 20 cm thick at the bottom. The imaging device is based upon a 19 × 19 element square MURA (Modified Uniformly Redundant Array) coded mask mounted in an one-piece mask-antimask configuration. The detector's spatial resolution is about 10 mm at 100 keV. This is the first experiment to use such a mask pattern and configuration for astrophysical purposes. The expected 3 sensitivity for an on-axis source observed for 104 s at a residual atmosphere of 3.5 g cm–2 is 1.44 × 10–5 photons cm–2 s–1 keV–1 at 100 keV and 1.00 × 10–6 photons cm–2 s–1 keV–1 at 1 MeV. The angular resolution is approximately 14 arcminutes over a 13°field of view. The instrument is mounted in an automatic platform with a capability for pointing and stabilization in both azimuth and elevation axis with 2 arcmin accuracy.Presented at the 2nd UN/ESA Workshop, held in Bogotá, Colombia, 9-13 November, 1992.  相似文献

The burst component of the solar X-ray flux in the soft wavelength range 2 < < 12 Å observed from Explorer 33 and Explorer 35 from July 1966 to September 1968 was analyzed. In this period 4028 burst peaks were identified. The differential distributions of the temporal and intensity parameters of the bursts revealed no separation into more than one class of bursts. The most frequently observed value for rise time was 4 min and for decay time was 12 min. The distribution of the ratio of rise to decay time can be represented by an exponential with exponent -2.31 from a ratio of 0.3 to 2.7; the maximum in this distribution occurred at a ratio of 0.3. The values of the total observed flux, divided by the background flux at burst maximum, can be represented by a power law with exponent -2.62 for ratios between 1.5 and 32. The distribution of peak burst fluxes can be represented by a power law with exponent - 1.75 over the range 1–100 milli-erg (cm2 sec)–1. The flux time integral values are given by a power law with exponent -1.44 over the range 1–50 erg cm–2.The distribution of peak burst flux as a function of H importance revealed a general tendency for larger peak X-ray fluxes to occur with both larger H flare areas and with brighter H flares. There is no significant dependence of X-ray burst occurrence on heliographic longitude; the emission thus lacks directivity. The theory of free-free emission by a thermal electron distribution was applied to a composite quantitative discussion of hard X-ray fluxes (data from Arnoldy et al., 1968; Kane and Winckler, 1969; and Hudson et al., 1969) and soft X-ray fluxes during solar X-ray bursts. Using bursts yielding measured X-ray intensities in three different energy intervals, covering a total range of 1–50 keV, temperatures and emission measures were derived. The emission measure was found to vary from event to event. The peak time of hard X-ray events was found to occur an average of 3 min before the peak time of the corresponding soft X-ray bursts. Thus a changing emission measure during the event is also required. A free-free emission process with temperatures of 12–39 × 106K and with an emission measure in the range 3.6 × 1047 to 2.1 × 1050 cm–3 which varies both from event to event and within an individual event is required by the data examined. Now at Department of Astrophysical Sciences, Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey.  相似文献

It is shown that a universal steady X-ray background with the energy flux 10–7 erg cm–2 s–1 sr–1 can arise as a superposition of radiation from pulsars (neutron stars) in various galaxies when it is taken into account that supernova outburst occurs in a galaxy at the rate of 10–2/year.  相似文献

A balloon-borne gemanium spectrometer was flown in an attempt to detect line-emission from Cyg X-1 and the Crab nebula in the energy range 30–270 keV. The experiment was carried out on 29–30 September, 1982. A line feature at 145 keV was observed from Cyg X-1. The intensity is (1.34±0.31)×10–2 photons cm–2 s–1 and the width is 14.3 keV FWHM. From the Crab nebula, a weak line feature with 1.8 excess was found around 78 keV.  相似文献

The chromospherically-active binary, V711 Tau, had been observed by using the American Very Large Array (VLA) at five bands from 1.4 to 15 GHz. During the observation, the source was undergoing an intense flare, its radio luminosity up to 1.8 × 1018 erg s–1 Hz–1. The degree of circular polarization in the phase of the most intense flare was very small. With the decaying of the flare the flux density decreased, spectral index became smaller, spectra steeper and reversal frequency lower; the degree of circular polarization increased and its direction was dependent on frequency. These observational facts support the conclusion that the emission during intense flare is synchrotron (or synchro-cyclotron) mechanism. The magnetic intensity is about 10 G near = 1, the average electron energy, 4 MeV, the electron density with larger than 10 keV, 3 × 104–9 × 104 cm–3 and the electronic energy spectrum index in power-law distribution 1.3.  相似文献

X-radiation may result from active plasma phenomena in the interactions of comets with the solar wind. We have carried out a limited but sensitive search for soft X-radiation from Comet Bradfield (1979 ), on 1980 Feb. 5. No X-radiation was detected at a level (3σ) of 1.7 × 10−13 erg(cm2sec keV)−1 in the 0.2 – 4.0 kev range. This corresponds to a limit on the power dissipated in the comet by non-thermal electrons of approximately 1019 ergs sec−1, averaged over the 2568-sec exposure to the comet. This energy deposition is near the magnitude suggested by simple theoretical ideas, and further searches of appropriate comets both in soft X-radiation and at radio wavelengths seem warranted.  相似文献

New measurements of the radiative flux deficits of two large sunspots are presented, based on detailed isophotometric maps. Results are given separately for umbrae and penumbrae. The umbral and penumbral deficits are 4–5 × 1010 and 1–1.5 × 1010 erg cm–2 s–1 respectively, the larger figures ref to the larger spot. Over limited areas centered on the umbral cores the deficits for the two spots amount to 76 and 86% of the photospheric flux.  相似文献

The isotropic cumulative burst rate of 7030 –6000 +10000 yr–1 at a fluence ofS=8.47×10–9 erg–1 cm–2 determined by Beurleet al. from their observation of two gamma-ray bursts is shown to be statistically improbable. The difficulty arises from their assumption that the power law cumulative distribution function index equals one. Their observations are rediscussed and an upper limit ofN(>8.47×10–9 erg cm–2)<5400 yr–1 is proposed.  相似文献

The HIgh-REsolution Gamma-ray and hard X-ray Spectrometer (HIREGS) consists of an actively shielded array of twelve liquid-nitrogen-cooled germanium detectors designed to provide unprecedented spectral resolution and narrow-line sensitivity for solar gamma-ray line observations. Two long-duration, circumpolar balloon flights of HIREGS in Antarctica (10–24 January, 1992 and 31 December, 1992–10 January, 1993) provided 90.9 and 20.4 hours of solar observations, respectively. During the observations, eleven soft X-ray bursts at C levels and above (largest M1.7) occurred, and three small solar hard X-ray bursts were detected by the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. HIREGS detected a significant increase above 30 keV in one. No solar gamma-ray line emission was detected. Limits on the 2.223-MeV line and the hard X-ray emission are used to estimate the relative contribution of protons and electrons to the energy in flares, and to coronal heating. For the 2.223-MeV line, the upper limit fluence is 0.8 ph cm-2 in the flares, and the upper limit flux is 1.8 × 10-4 ph s-1 cm-2 in the absence of flares. These limits imply that 6 × 1030 (2) protons above 30 MeV were accelerated in the flares, assuming standard photospheric abundances and a thick target model. The total energy contained in the accelerated protons >30 MeV is 4 × 1026 ergs, but this limit can be more than 1030 ergs if the spectrum extends down to 1 MeV. The upper limit on the total energy in accelerated electrons during the observed flares can also exceed 1030 ergs if the spectrum goes down to 7 keV. Quiet-Sun observations indicate that 1026erg s-1 are deposited by energetic protons >1 MeV, well below the1027 –1028 erg s-1 required for coronal heating, while <3 × 1027 erg s-1 are deposited by energetic electrons, which does not exclude the possibility of coronal heating by quiet-time accelerated electrons. The quiet-Sun observations also suggest that if protons stored in the corona are to supply the energy for flares, as suggested by Elliot (1964), the proton spectrum must extend down to at least 2 MeV. However, collisional losses at typical coronal-loop densities prevent those low-energy protons from being stored for 104 s. It therefore seems unlikely that the energy for flares could come from energetic protons stored over long periods.  相似文献

We report on preliminary results of EXOSAT observations of three gamma-ray burst error boxes. No source was detected down to a limit of 10–10 erg cm–2s–1, assuming a black-body spectrum for the burst counterpart. Results are interpreted in the framework of current theoretical models.Paper presented at the 11th European Regional Astronomical Meetings of the IAU on New Windows to the Universe, held 3–8 July, 1989, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.  相似文献

Measurements of electron concentrations in the ionosphere, between 100 and 250 km altitude, were used to compute the increase in solar ionizing radiation during two flares on 21 and 23 May 1967. Since the altitude of maximum absorption of the solar energy (approximately unit optical depth) depends on the wavelength of the radiation, it is possible to estimate separately the energy enhancement in different portions of the spectrum. An ionizing energy flux increase of nearly 5 erg cm–2 sec–1 was observed on 21 May, while on the 23rd, the increase was over 7 erg cm–2 sec–1. In both flares, most of the absolute increase occurred in the 20–205 Å region of the spectrum, although the relative increase was much larger at the shorter wavelengths.  相似文献

We present an analysis of spacecraft observations of non-thermal X-rays and escaping electrons for 5 selected small solar flares in 1967. OSO-3 multi-channel energetic X-ray measurements during the non-thermal component of the solar flare X-ray bursts are used to derive the parent electron spectrum and emission measure. IMP-4 and Explorer-35 observations of > 22 keV and > 45 keV electrons in the interplanetary medium after the flares provide a measure of the total number and spectrum of the escaping particles. The ratio of electron energy loss due to collisions with the ambient solar flare gas to the energy loss due to bremsstrahlung is derived. The total energy loss due to collisions is then computed from the integrated bremsstrahlung energy loss during the non-thermal X-ray burst. For > 22 keV flare electrons the total energy loss due to collisions is found to be 104 times greater than the bremsstrahlung energy loss and 102 times greater than the energy loss due to escaping electrons. Therefore the escape of electrons into the interplanetary medium is a negligible energetic electron loss mechanism and cannot be a substantial factor in the observed decay of the non-thermal X-ray burst for these solar flares. We present a picture of electron acceleration, energy loss and escape consistent with previous observations of an inverse relationship between rise and decay times of the non-thermal X-ray burst and X-ray energy. In this picture the acceleration of electrons occurs throughout the 10–100 sec duration of the non-thermal X-ray burst and determines the time profile of the burst. The average energy of the accelerated electrons first rises and then falls through the burst. Collisions with the ambient gas provide the dominant energetic electron loss mechanism with a loss time of 1 sec. This picture is consistent with the ratio of the total number of energetic electrons accelerated in the flare to the maximum instantaneous number of electrons in the flare region. Typical values for the parameters derived from the X-ray and electron observations are: total energy in > 22 keV electrons total energy lost by collisions = 1028–29 erg, total number of electrons accelerated above 22 keV = 1036, total energy lost by non-thermal bremsstrahlung = 1024erg, total energy lost in escaping > 22 keV electrons = 1026erg, total number of > 22 keV electrons escaping = 1033–34.The total energy in electrons accelerated above 22 keV is comparable to the energy in the optical or quasi-thermal flare, implying a flare mechanism with particle acceleration as one of the dominant modes of energy dissipation. The overall efficiency for electron escape into the interplanetary medium is 0.1–1% for these flares, and the spectrum of escaping electrons is found to be substantially harder than the X-ray producing electrons.Currently at Tokyo Astronomical Observatory, Mitaka, Tokyo, Japan.  相似文献

We present the results from a search of pulsed emission in low-energy gamma-rays from GX 1+4 source observed during zenith transit in a balloon experiment in April, 1982. The observed pulsar period is 120.6±0.2 s with pulsed emission flux of (1.3±0.4)×10–5 photons cm–2 s–1 keV–1 at an average energy 342 keV. These pulsations, observed at gamma-ray energies perhaps for the first time from any X-ray pulsar, in conjunction with the period determined in X-rays, indicate a spin-down in contrast with the spin-up behaviour observed by others at earlier epochs.  相似文献

The GRANAT observatory was launched into a high apogee orbit on 1 December, 1989. Three instruments onboard GRANAT - PHEBUS, WATCH and SIGMA are able to detect gamma-ray bursts in a very broad energy range from 6 keV up to 100 MeV. Over 250 gamma-ray bursts were detected. We discuss the results of the observations of the time histories and spectral evolution of the detected events provided by the different instruments in different energy ranges. Short Gamma-Ray Bursts (< 2 s) have 10 ms structure in their time histories. They have harder energy spectra than the long (> 2 s) events. Evidence of the existence of four differently behaving componenents in gamma-ray burst spectra is discussed. Statistical properties of the gamma-ray burst sources based on the 5 years of observations with ( 10–6 erg/cm2) sensitivity as well as the results of high sensitivity ( 10–8 erg/cm2) search for Gamma-Ray Bursts within the SIGMA telescope field of view are reviewed.  相似文献
