Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic trace element and due to human activities soils and waters are contaminated by Cd both on a local and global scale. It is widely accepted that chemical interactions with functional groups of natural organic matter (NOM) is vital for the bioavailability and mobility of trace elements. In this study the binding strength of cadmium (Cd) to soil organic matter (SOM) was determined in an organic (49% organic C) soil as a function of reaction time, pH and Cd concentration. In experiments conducted at native Cd concentrations in soil (0.23 μg g−1 dry soil), halides (Cl, Br) were used as competing ligands to functional groups in SOM. The concentration of Cd in the aqueous phase was determined by isotope-dilution (ID) inductively-coupled-plasma-mass-spectrometry (ICP-MS), and the activity of Cd2+ was calculated from the well-established Cd-halide constants. At higher Cd loading (500-54,000 μg g−1), the Cd2+ activity was directly determined by an ion-selective electrode (ISE). On the basis of results from extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, a model with one thiolate group (RS) was used to describe the complexation (Cd2+ + RS ? CdSR+; log KCdSR) at native Cd concentrations. The concentration of thiols (RSH; 0.047 mol kg−1 C) was independently determined by X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. Log KCdSR values of 11.2-11.6 (pKa for RSH = 9.96), determined in the pH range 3.1-4.6, compare favorably with stability constants for the association between Cd and well-defined thiolates like glutathione. In the concentration range 500-54,000 μg Cd g−1, a model consisting of one thiolate and one carboxylate (RCOO) gave the best fit to data, indicating an increasing role for RCOOH groups as RSH groups become saturated. The determined log KCdOOCR of 3.2 (Cd2+ +  RCOO ? CdOOCR+; log KCdOOCR; pKa for RCOOH = 4.5) is in accordance with stability constants determined for the association between Cd and well-defined carboxylates. Given a concentration of reduced sulfur groups of 0.2% or higher in NOM, we conclude that the complexation to organic RSH groups may control the speciation of Cd in soils, and most likely also in surface waters, with a total concentration less than 5 mg Cd g−1 organic C.  相似文献

Methylmercury can accumulate in fish to concentrations unhealthy for humans and other predatory mammals. Most sources of mercury (Hg) emit inorganic species to the environment. Therefore, ecological harm occurs when inorganic Hg is converted to methylmercury. Sulfate- and iron-reducing bacteria (SRB and FeRB) methylate Hg, but the effects of processes involving oxidized and reduced forms of sulfur and iron on the reactivity of Hg, including the propensity of inorganic Hg to be methylated, are poorly understood. Under abiotic conditions, using a laboratory flow reactor, bisulfide (HS) was added at 40 to 250 μM h−1 to 5 g L−1 goethite (α-FeOOH) suspensions to which Hg(II) was adsorbed (30-100 nmol m−2) at pH 7.5. Dissolved Hg initially decreased from 103 or 104 nM (depending on initial conditions) to 10−1 nM, during which the concentration of Hg(II) adsorbed to goethite decreased by 80% and metacinnabar (β-HgS(s)) formed, based on identification using Hg LIII-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopic analysis. The apparent coordination of oxygens surrounding Hg(II), measured with EXAFS spectroscopy, increased during one flow experiment, suggesting desorption of monodentate-bound Hg(II) while bidentate-bound Hg(II) persisted on the goethite surface. Further sulfidation increased dissolved Hg concentrations by one to two orders of magnitude (0.5 to 10 nM or 30 nM), suggesting that byproducts of bisulfide oxidation and Fe(III) reduction, primarily polysulfide and potentially Fe(II), enhanced the dissolution of β-HgS(s) and/or desorption of Hg(II). Rapid accumulation of Fe(II) in the solid phase (up to 40 μmol g−1) coincided with faster elevation of dissolved Hg concentrations. Fe(II) served as a proxy for elemental sulfur [S(0)], as S(0) was the dominant bisulfide oxidation product coupled to Fe(III) reduction, based on sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. In one experiment, dissolved Hg concentrations tracked those of all sulfide species [S(-II)]. These results suggest that S(-II) reacted with S(0) to form polysulfide, which then caused the dissolution of β-HgS(s). A secondary Fe-bearing phase resembling poorly formed green rust was observed in sulfidized solids with scanning electron microscopy, although there was no clear evidence that either surface-bound or mineralized Fe(II) strongly affected Hg speciation. Examination of interrelated processes involving S(-II) and Fe(III) revealed new modes of Hg solubilization previously not considered in Hg reactivity models.  相似文献

The rate at which iron- and aluminium-natural organic matter (NOM) complexes dissociate plays a critical role in the transport of these elements given the readiness with which they hydrolyse and precipitate. Despite this, there have only been a few reliable studies on the dissociation kinetics of these complexes suggesting half-times of some hours for the dissociation of Fe(III) and Al(III) from a strongly binding component of NOM. First-order dissociation rate constants are re-evaluated here at pH 6.0 and 8.0 and 25 °C using both cation exchange resin and competing ligand methods for Fe(III) and a cation exchange resin method only for Al(III) complexes. Both methods provide similar results at a particular pH with a two-ligand model accounting satisfactorily for the dissociation kinetics results obtained. For Fe(III), half-times on the order of 6-7 h were obtained for dissociation of the strong component and 4-5 min for dissociation of the weak component. For aluminium, the half-times were on the order of 1.5 h and 1-2 min for the strong and weak components, respectively. Overall, Fe(III) complexes with NOM are more stable than analogous complexes with Al(III), implying Fe(III) may be transported further from its source upon dilution and dispersion.  相似文献

Organic ligands are known to interfere with the polymerization of Fe(III), but the extent of interference has not been systematically studied as a function of structural ligand properties. This study examines how the number and position of phenol groups in hydroxybenzoic acids affect both ferrihydrite formation and its local (<5 Å) Fe coordination. To this end, acid Fe(III) nitrate solutions were neutralized up to pH 6.0 in the presence of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4HB), 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,4DHB), and the hydroquinone 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (3,4DHB). The initial molar ligand/Fe ratios ranged from 0 to 0.6. The precipitates were dialyzed, lyophilized, and subsequently studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The solids contained up to 32 wt.% organic C (4HB ∼ 2,4DHB < 3,4DHB). Only precipitates formed in 3,4DHB solutions comprised considerable amounts of Fe(II) (Fe(II)/Fetot ≤ 6 mol%), implying the abiotic mineralization of the catechol-group bearing ligand during Fe(III) hydrolysis under oxic conditions. Hydroxybenzoic acids decreased ferrihydrite formation in the order 4HB ∼ 2,4DHB ? 3,4DHB, which documents that phenol group position rather than the number of phenol groups controls the ligand’s interaction with Fe(III). The coordination numbers of edge- and double corner-sharing Fe in the precipitates decreased by up to 100%. Linear combination fitting (LCF) of Fe K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra revealed that this decrease was due to increasing amounts of organic Fe(III) complexes in the precipitates. Although EXAFS derived coordination numbers of Fe in ferrihydrite remained constant within error, all organic ligands decreased the coherently scattering domain (CSD) size of ferrihydrite as indicated by synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis (4HB < 2,4DHB ? 3,4DHB). With decreasing particle size of ferrihydrite its Fe(O,OH)6 octahedra became progressively distorted as evidenced by an increasing loss of centrosymmetry of the Fe sites. Pre-edge peak analysis of the Fe K-edge XANES spectra in conjunction with LCF results implied that ferrihydrite contains on an average 13 ± 3% tetrahedral Fe(III), which is in very good agreement with the revised single-phase structural model of ferrihydrite (Michel, F. M., Barron, V., Torrent, J., Morales, M. P. et al. (2010) Ordered ferrimagnetic form of ferrihydrite reveals links among structure, composition, and magnetism. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA107, 2787-2792). The results suggest that hydroxybenzoic acid moieties of natural organic matter (NOM) effectively suppress ferrihydrite precipitation as they kinetically control the availability of inorganic Fe(III) species for nucleation and/or polymerization reactions. As a consequence, NOM can trigger the formation of small ferrihydrite nanoparticles with increased structural strain. These factors may eventually enhance the biogeochemical reactivity of ferrihydrite formed in NOM-rich environments. This study highlights the role of hydroquinone structures of NOM for Fe complexation, polymerization, and redox speciation.  相似文献

There are increasing concerns with elevated levels of Cr(VI) in the environment because it is a strong oxidant, corrosive, and carcinogenic. The concerns extend to the presence of Cr(VI) in many aquifers in California and elsewhere, where relatively high levels have been attributed to both industrial pollution and natural processes. The authors have, therefore, determined if natural redox processes contribute to the presence of high Cr(VI) concentrations (6–36 μg L−1) in an aquifer in central California relative to non-detectable concentrations (<0.1 μg L−1) in an adjacent aquifer. Specifically, the distribution and the redox speciation of dissolved (<0.45 μm) Cr have been compared with those of particulate Mn and Fe oxy-hydroxides in sediments, using X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Mn and Fe L-edges. The analyses show a correlation between the presence of dissolved Cr(VI) and Mn (hydr)oxide minerals, which are the only common, naturally occurring minerals known to oxidize Cr(III) in laboratory experiments. This covariance substantiates the results of those experiments and previous field studies that indicate natural oxidation mechanisms might account for the relatively high levels of Cr(VI) in the study site, as well as for elevated concentrations in other aquifers with similar biogeochemical conditions.  相似文献

Copper stable isotope ratios are fractionated during various biogeochemical processes and may trace the fate of Cu during long-term pedogenetic processes. We assessed the effects of oxic weathering (formation of Cambisols) and podzolization on Cu isotope ratios (δ65Cu). Two Cambisols (oxic weathered soils without strong vertical translocations of soil constituents) and two Podzols (soils showing vertical translocation of organic matter, Fe and Al) were analyzed for Cu concentrations, partitioning of Cu in seven fractions of a sequential extraction and δ65Cu values in bulk soil. Cu concentrations in the studied soils were low (1.4-27.6 μg g−1) and Cu was mainly associated with strongly bound Fe oxide- and silicate-associated forms. Bulk δ65Cu values varied between −0.57‰ and 0.44‰ in all studied horizons. The O horizons had on average significantly lighter Cu isotope compositions (−0.21‰) than the A horizons (0.13‰) which can either be explained by Cu isotope fractionation during cycling through the plants or deposition of isotopically light Cu from the atmosphere. Oxic weathering without pronounced podzolization in both Cambisols and a weakly developed Podzol (Haplic Podzol 2) caused no significant isotope fractionation in the single profiles, while a slight tendency to lower δ65Cu values with depth was visible in all four profiles. This is the opposite depth distribution of δ65Cu values to that we observed in hydromorphic soils (soils which show indication of redox changes because of the influence of water saturation) in a previous study. In a more pronounced Podzol (Haplic Podzol 1), δ65Cu values and Cu concentrations decreased from Ah to E horizons and increased again deeper in the soil. Humus-rich sections of the Bhs horizon had higher Cu concentrations (2.8 μg g−1) and a higher δ65Cu value (−0.18‰) than oxide-rich sections (1.9 μg g−1, −0.35‰) suggesting Cu translocation between E and B horizons as organo-Cu complexes. The different depth distributions in oxic weathered and hydromorphic soils and the pronounced vertical differences in δ65Cu values in Haplic Podzol 1 indicate a promising potential of δ65Cu values to improve our knowledge of the fate of Cu during long-term pedogenetic processes.  相似文献

This study focused on the analysis of As levels in human hair samples collected from six villages in the Kandal Province of Cambodia. Of interest were the influence of, and interactions among, certain factors affecting As intake into the human body: As concentrations in groundwater, period of groundwater consumption, age and gender. The results revealed As levels in human hair ranging from 0.06 to 30 μg g−1 with median and arithmetic mean values of 0.61 and 3.20 μg g−1 (n = 68), respectively. Furthermore, a linear relationship was found between As concentrations in human hair and in the local groundwater. Arsenic (III) is the dominant species in Kandal groundwater, constituting in most cases at least 60% of the total As. Arsenic concentration ranged from 5 to 1543 μg L−1, with the median value 348 μg L−1 and arithmetic mean 454 μg L−1. In large rural, poor areas holding most of Kandal’s 1.1 million people, up to 2 in 1000 people are believed to be at risk of cancer through the As-enriched water they drink. A toxicity risk assessment provides a hazard quotient (HQ) equaling 5.12, also a clear indication of non-carcinogenic exposure risk. On the authors’ visit to Kampong Kong commune, Kandal Province, cases of arsenicosis were diagnosed in patients as a result of drinking As-enriched groundwater.  相似文献

The Xunyang Hg mine (XMM) situated in Shaanxi Province is an active Hg mine in China. Gaseous elemental Hg (GEM) concentrations in ambient air were determined to evaluate its distribution pattern as a consequence of the active mining and retorting in the region. Total Hg (HgT) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in riparian soil, sediment and rice grain samples (polished) as well as Hg speciation in surface water samples were measured to show local dispersion of Hg contamination. As expected, elevated concentrations of GEM were found, ranging from 7.4 to 410 ng m−3. High concentrations of HgT and MeHg were also obtained in riparian soils, ranged from 5.4 to 120 mg kg−1 and 1.2 to 11 μg kg−1, respectively. Concentrations of HgT and MeHg in sediment samples varied widely from 0.048 to 1600 mg kg−1 and 1.0 to 39 μg kg−1, respectively. Surface water samples showed elevated HgT concentrations, ranging from 6.2 to 23,500 ng L−1, but low MeHg concentrations, ranging from 0.022 to 3.7 ng L−1. Rice samples exhibited high concentrations of 50–200 μg kg−1 in HgT and of 8.2–80 μg kg−1 in MeHg. The spatial distribution patterns of Hg speciation in the local environmental compartments suggest that the XMM is the source of Hg contaminations in the study area.  相似文献

We have performed experiments to evaluate Au solubility in natural, water-saturated basaltic melts as a function of oxygen fugacity. Experiments were carried out at 1000 °C and 200 MPa, and oxygen fugacity was controlled at the fayalite-magnetite-quartz (FMQ) oxygen fugacity buffer and FMQ + 4. All experiments were saturated with a metal-chloride aqueous solution loaded initially as a 10 wt% NaCl eq. fluid. The stable phase assemblage at FMQ consists of basalt melt, olivine, clinopyroxene, a single-phase aqueous fluid, and metallic Au. The stable phase assemblage at FMQ + 4 consists of basalt melt, clinopyroxene, magnetite-spinel solid solution, a single-phase aqueous fluid, and metallic Au. Silicate glasses (i.e., quenched melt) and their contained crystalline material were analyzed by using both electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Measured Au concentrations in the quenched melt range from 4.8 μg g−1 to 0.64 μg g−1 at FMQ + 4, and 0.54 μg g−1 to 0.1 μg g−1 at FMQ. The measured solubility of Au in olivine and clinopyroxene was consistently below the LA-ICP-MS limit of detection (i.e., 0.1 μg g−1). These melt solubility data place important limitations on the dissolved Au content of water-saturated, Cl- and S-bearing basaltic liquids at geologically relevant fO2 values. The new data are compared to published, experimentally-determined values for Au solubility in dry and hydrous silicate liquids spanning the compositional range from basalt to rhyolite, and the effects of melt composition, oxygen fugacity, pressure and temperature are discussed.  相似文献

We examined the solubility, mineralogy and geochemical transformations of sedimentary Fe in waterways associated with coastal lowland acid sulfate soils (CLASS). The waterways contained acidic (pH 3.26-3.54), FeIII-rich (27-138 μM) surface water with low molar Cl:SO4 ratios (0.086-5.73). The surficial benthic sediments had high concentrations of oxalate-extractable Fe(III) due to schwertmannite precipitation (kinetically favoured by 28-30% of aqueous surface water Fe being present as the FeIII species). Subsurface sediments contained abundant pore-water HCO3 (6-20 mM) and were reducing (Eh < −100 mV) with pH 6.0-6.5. The development of reducing conditions caused reductive dissolution of buried schwertmannite and goethite (formed via in situ transformation of schwertmannite). As a consequence, pore-water FeII concentrations were high (>2 mM) and were constrained by precipitation-dissolution of siderite. The near-neutral, reducing conditions also promoted SO4-reduction and the formation of acid-volatile sulfide (AVS). The results show, for the first time for CLASS-associated waterways, that sedimentary AVS consisted mainly of disordered mackinawite. In the presence of abundant pore-water FeII, precipitation-dissolution of disordered mackinawite maintained very low (i.e. <0.1 μM) S−II concentrations. Such low concentrations of S−II caused slow rates for conversion of disordered mackinawite to pyrite, thereby resulting in relatively low concentrations of pyrite (<300 μmol g−1 as Fe) compared to disordered mackinawite (up to 590 μmol g−1 as Fe). This study shows that interactions between schwertmannite, goethite, siderite, disordered mackinawite and pyrite control the geochemical behaviour of sedimentary Fe in CLASS-associated waterways.  相似文献

In oxic environments contaminated with arsenate (As(V)), small polyhydroxycarboxylates such as citrate may impact the structure of precipitating ferrihydrite (Fh) and thus the surface speciation of As(V). In this study, ‘2-line’ Fh was precipitated from ferric nitrate solutions that were neutralized to pH 6.5 in the presence of increasing citrate concentrations and in the absence or presence of As(V). The initial citrate/Fe and As/Fe ratios were 0-50 mol% and 5 mol%, respectively. The reaction products, enriched with up to 0.32 mol citrate per mole Fe, were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Fe and As K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Citrate decreased the particle size of Fh by impairing the polymerization of Fe(O,OH)6 octahedra via edge and corner linkages. In the presence of citrate and As(V), coordination numbers of Fe decreased by up to 28% relative to pure Fh. Citrate significantly reduced the static disorder of Fe-O bonds, implying a decreased octahedral distortion in Fh. Mean bond distances in Fh were not affected by citrate and remained constant within error at 1.98 Å for Fe-O, 3.03 Å for Fe-Fe1, and 3.45 Å for Fe-Fe2. Likewise, citrate had no effect on the As-Fe (3.31 Å) bond distance in As(V) coprecipitated with Fh. The As K-edge EXAFS data comply with the formation of (i) only monodentate binuclear (2C) As(V) surface complexes and (ii) combinations of 2C, monodentate mononuclear (1V), and outersphere As(V) surface complexes. Our results suggest that increasing citrate concentrations led to a decreasing 1V/2C ratio and/or that citrate increasingly impaired the formation of outersphere As(V) complexes. Moreover, citrate stabilized colloidal suspensions of Fh (pH 4.3-6.6, I ∼0.45 M) and reduced Fh formation at the expense of soluble Fe(III)-citrate complexes. At initial citrate/Fe ratios ?25 mol%, between 8% and 41% of total Fe was bound in Fe(III)-citrate complexes after Fh formation. Polynuclear Fe(III)-citrate species were found to bind As(V) via surface complexes indistinguishable by EXAFS from those of As(V) adsorbed to or coprecipitated with Fh. Our study implies that low molecular weight polyhydroxycarboxylates may enhance the mobility of As(V) in aqueous systems of high ionic strength (e.g., neutralizing acid mine drainage) by colloidal stabilization of suspended Fh particles and the formation of ternary As(V) complexes.  相似文献

Groundwater is the main source of drinking water for the population of nearly 200,000 people in eastern Croatia. The largest town in the region is Osijek whose citizens are supplied with drinking water obtained from groundwater from the “Vinogradi” well field. This study investigated and determined As occurrence in groundwater of the Osijek area. Groundwater samples were taken from 18 water wells and 12 piezometers with a depth ranging between 21 and 200 m. Over the 10-a period to 2007, a mean As concentration of 240 μg L−1 was found. There was no statistically significant secular change in concentration over that period, however small but significant seasonal variations were noted, with the highest seasonal As concentrations over the period May 2006-February 2007 being observed in summer. The predominant As species observed was As(III), constituting 85% and 93% of total As in piezometers and water wells, respectively. Higher concentrations of As tended to be found in deeper wells with the mean As concentration in shallow groundwater (<50 m) and deep groundwater (>50 m) being 27 μg L−1, and 205 μg L−1, respectively. Geochemically, the groundwaters show similarities to those in other parts of the Pannonian Basin. Arsenic(tot) is weakly correlated with pH and Fe, negatively correlated with Mn and has no significant correlation with any of EC, COD-Mn or alkalinity.  相似文献

Levels of the chalcophile metals Hg, Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn and the metalloid As in soils from rice paddy fields were assessed in two regions impacted by different industrial activities in Guizhou province, China. The two study areas (Wanshan and Qingzhen) have previously received attention in the international literature due to heavy Hg pollution, though levels of other potentially harmful elements have not previously been reported. The regions were selected as representing two important, but categorically different metal(loid) contaminated areas in China: Wanshan has been a major region for Hg production while Qingzhen is an important region for a large range of various heavy industries based on coal as an energy source.Within a limited distance of the Hg mine tailings in Wanshan the rice paddy fields are heavily contaminated by Hg (median concentration 25 μg g−1, maximum 119 μg g−1) and moderately contaminated by Zn and Cd (median concentrations of 86 and 0.9 μg g−1, respectively). Zinc and Cd levels correlate well with Hg contamination, which indicates a similar source and mechanism of transport and accumulation. Other studies have concluded that the main sources of Hg contamination in Wanshan are the numerous Hg mine tailings. This is likely as these metals are all geochemically associated with the mineral cinnabar (HgS). The other chalcophile elements (Pb, Cu and As) are nevertheless found at background levels only. In Qingzhen the soils were found to contain elevated levels of As and Hg (median concentrations of 38 and 0.3 μg g−1, respectively). These are elements that are known to be more associated with coal and released during coal combustion.  相似文献

Waters from abandoned Sb-Au mining areas have higher Sb (up to 2138 μg L−1), As (up to 1252 μg L−1) and lower Al, Zn, Li, Ni and Co concentrations than those of waters from the As-Au mining area of Banjas, which only contain up to 64 μg L−1 As. In general, Sb occurs mainly as SbO3 and As H2AsO4. In general, waters from old Sb-Au mining areas are contaminated in Sb, As, Al, Fe, Cd, Mn, Ni and NO2, whereas those from the abandoned As-Au mining area are contaminated in Al, Fe, Mn, Ni, Cd and rarely in NO2. Waters from the latter area, immediately downstream of mine dumps are also contaminated in As. In stream sediments from Sb-Au and As-Au mining areas, Sb (up to 5488 mg kg−1) and As (up to 235 mg kg−1) show a similar behaviour and are mainly associated with the residual fraction. In most stream sediments, the As and Sb are not associated with the oxidizable fraction, while Fe is associated with organic matter, indicating that sulphides (mainly arsenopyrite and pyrite) and sulphosalts containing those metalloids and metal are weathered. Arsenic and Sb are mainly associated with clay minerals (chlorite and mica; vermiculite in stream sediments from old Sb-Au mining areas) and probably also with insoluble Sb phases of stream sediments. In the most contaminated stream sediments, metalloids are also associated with Fe phases (hematite and goethite, and also lepidocrocite in stream sediments from Banjas). Moreover, the most contaminated stream sediments correspond to the most contaminated waters, reflecting the limited capacity of stream sediments to retain metals and metalloids.  相似文献

Complete hydrochemical data are rarely reported for coal-mine discharges (CMD). This report summarizes major and trace-element concentrations and loadings for CMD at 140 abandoned mines in the Anthracite and Bituminous Coalfields of Pennsylvania. Clean-sampling and low-level analytical methods were used in 1999 to collect data that could be useful to determine potential environmental effects, remediation strategies, and quantities of valuable constituents. A subset of 10 sites was resampled in 2003 to analyze both the CMD and associated ochreous precipitates; the hydrochemical data were similar in 2003 and 1999. In 1999, the flow at the 140 CMD sites ranged from 0.028 to 2210 L s−1, with a median of 18.4 L s−1. The pH ranged from 2.7 to 7.3; concentrations (range in mg/L) of dissolved (0.45-μm pore-size filter) SO4 (34–2000), Fe (0.046–512), Mn (0.019–74), and Al (0.007–108) varied widely. Predominant metalloid elements were Si (2.7–31.3 mg L−1), B (<1–260 μg L−1), Ge (<0.01–0.57 μg L−1), and As (<0.03–64 μg L−1). The most abundant trace metals, in order of median concentrations (range in μg/L), were Zn (0.6–10,000), Ni (2.6–3200), Co (0.27–3100), Ti (0.65–28), Cu (0.4–190), Cr (<0.5–72), Pb (<0.05–11) and Cd (<0.01–16). Gold was detected at concentrations greater than 0.0005 μg L−1 in 97% of the samples, with a maximum of 0.0175 μg L−1. No samples had detectable concentrations of Hg, Os or Pt, and less than half of the samples had detectable Pd, Ag, Ru, Ta, Nb, Re or Sn. Predominant rare-earth elements, in order of median concentrations (range in μg/L), were Y (0.11–530), Ce (0.01–370), Sc (1.0–36), Nd (0.006–260), La (0.005–140), Gd (0.005–110), Dy (0.002–99) and Sm (<0.005–79). Although dissolved Fe was not correlated with pH, concentrations of Al, Mn, most trace metals, and rare earths were negatively correlated with pH, consistent with solubility or sorption controls. In contrast, As was positively correlated with pH.  相似文献

Biofilm-embedded Mn oxides exert important controls on trace metal cycling in aquatic and soil environments. The speciation and mobility of Zn in particular has been linked to Mn oxides found in streams, wetlands, soils, and aquifers. We investigated the mechanisms of Zn sorption to a biogenic Mn oxide within a biofilm produced by model soil and freshwater MnII-oxidizing bacteria Pseudomonas putida. The biogenic Mn oxide is a c-disordered birnessite with hexagonal layer symmetry. Zinc adsorption isotherm and Zn and Mn K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy experiments were conducted at pH 6.9 to characterize Zn sorption to this biogenic Mn oxide, and to determine whether the bioorganic components of the biofilm affect metal sorption properties. The EXAFS data were analyzed by spectral fitting, principal component analysis, and linear least-squares fitting with reference spectra. Zinc speciation was found to change as Zn loading to the biosorbent [bacterial cells, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and biogenic Mn oxide] increased. At low Zn loading (0.13 ± 0.04 mol Zn kg−1 biosorbent), Zn was sorbed to crystallographically well-defined sites on the biogenic oxide layers in tetrahedral coordination to structural O atoms. The fit to the EXAFS spectrum was consistent with Zn sorption above and below the MnIV vacancy sites of the oxide layers. As Zn loading increased to 0.72 ± 0.04 mol Zn kg−1 biosorbent, Zn was also detected in octahedral coordination to these sites. Overall, our results indicate that the biofilm did not intervene in Zn sorption by the Mn-oxide because sorption to the organic material was observed only after all Mn vacancy sites were capped by Zn. The organic functional groups present in the biofilm contributed significantly to Zn removal from solution when Zn concentrations exceeded the sorption capacity of the biooxide. At the highest Zn loading studied, 1.50 ± 0.36 mol Zn kg−1 biosorbent, the proportion of total Zn sorption attributed to bioorganic material was 38 mol%. The maximum Zn loading to the biogenic oxide that we observed was 4.1 mol Zn kg−1 biogenic Mn oxide, corresponding to 0.37 ± 0.02 mol Zn mol−1 Mn. This loading is in excellent agreement with previous estimates of the content of cation vacancies in the biogenic oxide. The results of this study improve our knowledge of Zn speciation in natural systems and are consistent with those of Zn speciation in mineral soil fractions and ferromanganese nodules where the Mn oxides present are possibly biogenic.  相似文献

The occurrence of mining areas in the vicinities of salt marshes may affect their ecological functions and facilitate the transfer of pollutants into the food chain. The mobilisation of metals in salt marsh soils is controlled by abiotic (pH, redox potential) and biotic (influence of rhizosphere) factors. The effect of the rhizosphere of two plant species (Sarcocornia fruticosa and Phragmites australis) and different flooding regimes on potentially harmful metals and As mobilisation from salt marsh soil polluted by mining activities were investigated (total concentrations: 536 mg kg−1 As, 37 mg kg−1 Cd, 6746 mg kg−1 Pb, 15,320 mg kg−1 Zn). The results show that the changes in redox conditions (from 300 mV to −100 mV) and pH after flooding and rewetting periods may mobilise the contaminant elements into soil solution (e.g., 100 μg L−1 Cd, 30 μg L−1 Pb, 7 mg L−1 Zn), where they are available for plants or may be leached from the soil. Drying periods generated peaks of concentrations in the soil solution (up to 120 μg L−1 Cd and 50 μg L−1 Pb). The risk assessment of As and metal-polluted salt marshes should take into account flood dynamics in order to prevent metal(loid) mobilisation.  相似文献

Lake Iso Valkjärvi (southern Finland, Europe) was divided in two with a plastic curtain in 1991. One half was neutralized with CaCO3, and the other acted as a control. Mercury concentrations of perch (Perca fluviatilis) and northern pike (Esox lucius) in the limed and control side of the lake were studied both before and after the treatment. Average Hg concentrations of perch and pike were 0.40 and 1.2 μg g−1 (ww) in the early 1980s and 0.25 and 0.72 μg g−1 (ww) a decade later at the time of liming. Ten years after the liming the Hg concentrations of perch in the limed and control sides of the lake were 0.21 and 0.28 μg g−1 (ww) and those of pike were 0.69 and 0.43 μg g−1 (ww), respectively. Nitrogen isotope ratios (δ15N) for perch in the sampling period 2002–2004 showed wide variation suggesting variable trophic positions for individual fish. Pike formed two groups according to their δ15N-values, suggesting that zoobenthos dominated the diet of pike around 20 cm in length and fish that of the larger pikes. Because the δ15N-values of fish were at similar levels in the limed and control sides of L. Iso Valkjärvi, differences in food web structure cannot account for the different fish Hg concentrations. A more likely explanation is water quality induced differences in the dynamics and bioavailability of Hg, leading to decreased formation of methyl Hg.  相似文献

The re-vegetation of soils contaminated by potentially harmful metals is generally considered a suitable option to reduce the metal dispersion in surrounding environments. A continuous flow experiment was conducted to quantitatively assess the effect of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) root activity on the weathering of smithsonite (ZnCO3), a common Zn mineral. At the end of the experiment (10 days), the total amount of Zn released by smithsonite was increased by a factor of 2.25 in the presence of plants. This increase was due not only to plant uptake but also to the enhancement of the Zn release into leachates. The rate of Zn release from smithsonite to leachates was 2.9 × 10−4 μg g−1 s−1 and 1.5 × 10−4 μg g−1 s−1 in the presence and the absence of plants, respectively. The strong correlation (= 0.95; < 0.001) between concentrations of Zn and dissolved organic C (DOC) produced by the rhizosphere activity in leachates indicated that organic root exudates and secretions were closely involved in smithsonite weathering. Although the results are derived from laboratory study, and further in situ investigations over the long term are needed, they clearly highlighted that plants can enhance metal release into the environment by accelerating mineral weathering. Therefore, it is suggested that the ability of plants to alter metal phases in soils should be further taken into account when re-vegetation strategies are proposed for the rehabilitation of metal-polluted soils.  相似文献

Interaction of dissolved aqueous species with natural organic matter (NOM) is thought to be important in sequestering some species and enhancing the transport of others, but little is known about these interactions on a molecular scale. This paper describes a combined experimental 133Cs and 35Cl nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and computational molecular dynamics (MD) modeling study of the interaction of Cs+ and Cl with Suwannee River NOM. The results provide a detailed picture of the molecular-scale structure and dynamics of these interactions. Individual NOM molecules are typically hundreds to thousands of Daltons in weight, and on the molecular scale their interaction with small dissolved species can be investigated in ways similar to those used to study the interaction of dissolved aqueous species with mineral surfaces. As for such surface interactions, understanding both the structural environments and the dynamics over a wide range of frequencies is essential. The NMR results show that Cs+ is associated with NOM at pH values from 3.4 ± 0.5 (unbuffered Suwannee River NOM solution) to 9.0 ± 0.5. The extent of interaction increases with decreasing CsCl concentration at constant pH. It also decreases with increasing pH at constant CsCl concentration due to pH-dependent negative structural charge development on the NOM caused by progressive deprotonation of carboxylic and phenolic groups. The presence of NOM has little effect on the 133Cs chemical shifts, demonstrating that its local coordination environment does not change significantly due to interaction with the NOM. Narrow, solution-like line widths indicate rapid exchange of Cs+ between the NOM and bulk solution at frequencies of >102 Hz. The MD simulations support these results and show that Cs+ is associated with the NOM principally as outer sphere complexes and that this interaction does not reduce the Cs+ diffusion coefficient sufficiently to cause NMR line broadening. The 35Cl NMR data and the MD results are consistent in demonstrating that there is no significant complexation between Cl and NOM in the pH range investigated, consistent with negative structural charge on the NOM.  相似文献
