The upper mesosphere airglow emissions OI 5577, NaD and OH have been observed at Cachoeira Paulista (22.7°S; 45.0°W) Brazil. Nocturnal variations and their seasonal dependencies in amplitude and phase, and the annual variations of these emissions are presented, analysing the data obtained from 1977 to 1982 during the ascending phase of the last solar cycle. The nocturnal variations of the OI 5577 emission and the OH rotational temperature showed a significant semidiurnal oscillation, with the phase of maximum moving from midnight in January to early morning in June. Semiannual variation of the OI 5577 and NaD emissions with the maximum intensities in April/May and October/November were observed. The OH rotational temperature, however, showed an annual variation, maximum in summer and minimum in winter, while no significant seasonal variation was found in the OH emission intensities. Long-term intensity variations are also presented with the solar sunspot numbers and the 10.7 cm flux.  相似文献

Simultaneous measurements of the night airglow OI 5577 Å and OH (8,3) band have been carried out at Cachoeira Paulista (23°S, 45°W), Brazil since 1976. Cross correlation analyses between the nocturnal variations of these emissions and also with the OH rotational temperature (ROT) for various time shifts are presented. It is found that OH (8,3) is well correlated with ROT but with a time lag of about 1 h. The variations of OI 5577 Å lead OH (8,3) by about 2–3 h and ROT covaries with 5577 Å with a time lag less than 1 h. For the sake of comparison, OI 5577 Å, OH and NaD data from a number of IQSY stations have been analysed. It is noted that (1) OI 5577 Å leads OH by about 2 h at mid-latitude stations and (2) OH is well correlated with Na 5893 Å with a time lag of less than 1 h. The presence of the phase lagged correlation patterns between OH/5577 Å, OH/ROT and OH/NaD indicates vertical propagation of a wavelike perturbation of the upper atmosphere.  相似文献

In this paper the results of OH (8,3) emission intensity and rotational temperature measurements made in the Brazilian sector (23°S) from 1972 to 1974 are presented. Diurnal variations of both the parameters are found to fall into distinct classes, showing significant seasonal effects. A correlative study with the OI 5577 Å emission measured simultaneously is also presented. It is shown that both the phase and amplitude of the major part of the mean nocturnal intensity variations of the two emissions can be explained by the density and temperature perturbations caused by the solar semidiurnal tide. The OH emission is found to increase slightly during magnetic disturbances.  相似文献

Average diurnal variation patterns of the nightglow hydroxyl and sodium intensities are studied using data accumulated over several years by filter photometers at stations in the tropics, and north and south temperate latitudes. These average patterns are shown to depend upon season and latitude. They are compared with the frequencies with which various patterns actually occur, and it is shown that with increasing latitude the type of variation seen on a given night becomes less predictable. The sodium emission co-varies with the OH diurnally. The annual variations of OH and Na are presented and it is shown that the sodium in the southern hemisphere behaves like the sodium in the northern hemisphere displaced by six months. The annual OH variation does not exhibit this property. The OH intensity follows the solar activity cycle, but the sodium does not.  相似文献

Before the observation of the 1974 U Ori eruption, it was considered that the Mira stars had only some regular OH variations. With this eruption, we realized that sometimes flares can occur in this type of star. In the course of an OH Mira star monitoring programme with the Nançay radio telescope, we have discovered a new eruptive type of OH maser emission in several sources. Especially, in early 1992, we observed a quickly rising 1665 Mhz emission in the Mira X Oph. The main characteristics of this flare were: large flux variations independent of the light curve; large degree of circular polarization; radial velocity emission close to the stellar velocity.  相似文献

Night-time variations of the OH nightglow intensity reported by Wiens and Weill are compared with the theoretical predictions of a number of models. The behaviour of this emission agrees better with the theoretical one for locations in the equatorial zone but becomes more variable and less predictable for mid-latitude stations. It is calculated that, as a result of an increase of the eddy diffusion coefficient K, the OH emission can deviate from the typical night-time variation and increase by a factor as high as 2 if K is multiplied by 10. It is suggested that the eddy diffusion coefficient in the upper atmosphere is lower and undergoes lower amplitude variations in the equatorial zone than in the mid-latitude regions.  相似文献

Evening twilight airglow emissions of OH (7,2) band and Li 6708 Å are observed by Dunn-Manring type photometer and following important results are obtained.
  1. Intensity of OH (7,2) and Li (6708 Å) decrease exponentially during evening twilight period.
  2. OH (7,2) band covaries with Li (6708 Å) during evening twilight period.
  3. Empirical equations of OH (7,2) band with time is obtained.
  4. Possible explanations of such type of variations is also presented.

From the night airglow observations of OH (7-2) and OH (8-3) bands made at Mt. Abu (24.6°N, 72.7°E geographic) we have noted that there is high positive correlation in their intensity variations (Rao and Kulkarni, 1971). Assuming covariation of the other OH band emissions and also their average emission ratios it is possible to estimate the contribution of one band ‘contaminating’ the measurement of line emission made by a filter of moderate width, from the measurement of another band. In the second method an attempt is made to estimate the OH contamination from the measurement through two filters centred on the emission line of airglow.  相似文献

Mass loss dominates the stellar evolution on the Asymptotic Giant Branch. The phase of highest mass-loss occurs during the last 1–10% of the AGB and includes the so-called Miras and OH/IR stars. In this review I will discuss the characteristics and evolution of especially Miras, and discuss how they are linked to the mass loss. There are indications that high mass-loss rates are only reached for relatively young stars with massive progenitors. The mass loss rates vary both on long and short time scales: the short-term variations are likely linked to luminosity variations associated with the thermal-pulse cycle. The influence of mass loss in the post-AGB phase is also discussed.  相似文献

Photoelectric observations of Comet P/Encke during its 1980 apparition are combined with other published data to relate molecular production rates to the visual lightcurve. In addition to a substantial asymmetry about perihelion which is already well known, there are shorter-term variations in specific molecules which have not been duplicated by models. The most dramatic of these fluctuations is a rapid decrease by more than a factor of 3 in the production of OH at 0.75 AU preperihelion.  相似文献

Experiment data of the vertical distribution of sodium density measured by lidar are compared with the horizontal structures observed by photogrammetry on the sodium emissive layer. The gravity wave induced variations seen in the vertical distribution are used to define a 2-dimensional model of the layer, which is shown to explain the observed horizontal patterns. It is strongly suggested that the structures currently seen on OH can be also related to gravity waves and that their sporadic occurrence in specific angular directions is explained by the wave characteristic and by wave or wind induced chemistry.  相似文献

From experimental data concerning thermal solar tides, we show that they account for the average diurnal variations of the 557.7 nm atomic oxygen nightglow intensity at 100 km altitude for different latitudes. We point out that this result can be applied to the average diurnal variation of emissions of other constituents such as Na, OH, O2.  相似文献

A calculation of the non-steady development of a multi-species atmosphere of a comet moving in a near-parabolic heliocentric orbit is presented. The monochromatic brightness variations of the characteristic cometary emission bands due to OH, CN and C2 are then evaluated assuming that the parent molecules of these chemically unstable species are respectively H2O, HCN and H2C2 present in a homogeneous H2O clathrate nucleus. For small heliocentric distances where a quasi-steady approximation is valid, the brightness variations follow Levin's (1943) law, provided all the destruction mechanisms of the cometary molecules vary as the inverse square of the heliocentric distance. On the other hand, at large heliocentric distances Levin's law breaks down, essentially due to the large time-scales of residence of the emitting species in the cometary atmosphere. This large residence time at large heliocentric distance also produces an asymmetry between the brightness profiles of the inbound and outbound passages, such that the brightness declines less steeply with distance on the outbound passage than on the inbound. Consequently, the monochromatic brightness of OH at 4 AU outbound is about twice as large as the corresponding value inbound. While some comets show such an effect, others show just the opposite effect. These deviations, which show the limitations of our simple homogeneous model, are discussed qualitatively in terms of the plausible time varying physical structure of the cometary nucleus. The variations of the relative monochromatic brightnesses of the various emissions are also discussed, and the need for extending monochromatic brightness measurements to larger heliocentric distances is stressed.  相似文献

The observed types of nocturnal intensity variations for the OH (9-4) and OH (7-3) bands during IQSY at this Station are further analysed using the theoretical band intensity distribution of Evans and Llewellyn (1972). A considerable agreement is noticed between observed and theoretical intensity ratios, I(9-4)I(7-3), for a major portion of the data (~70%), which has a “continuous decrease” type of noctural intensity variation. This data is thereby satisfactorily explained on the basis of available information.For the remaining portion of the data (~30%), which has “an increase followed by decrease” type of intensity variation and higher intensities, the observed ratios are also systematically higher than the above. A satisfactory explanation is offered, by postulating a second layer of emission, by examining closely several aspects of the other observational results.  相似文献

A one dimensional time-dependent model of the neutral and ion chemistry of the middle atmosphere has been used to examine the production of odd hydrogen (H, OH, and HO2) during charged particle precipitation. At altitudes above about 65 km, odd hydrogen production depends on the ionization rate, and the atomic oxygen and water vapor densities. Odd hydrogen production is shown to exhibit diurnal and other time dependent variations during such an event at these altitudes, and the assumption that two odd hydrogen particles are always produced per ionization is reexamined.  相似文献

OH day and night airglow intensity variations were measured with a three-channel balloon-borne i.r. photometer in four separate flights from southern France in June 1970 and June 1971. The nightglow intensity showed a minimum at some time between midnight and 0200 hr local mean time followed by a steady increase until the end of the night. In all four flights a rapid pre-sunrise decrease in intensity was observed at a solar elevation of ?6°. The dayglow intensities increased slowly after sunrise with the emission reaching half its pre-dawn value near a solar elevation of 36°. The morning twilight observations are compared with other observations and with theoretical predictions.  相似文献

We report the results of three-year long observations of OH masers at 1665 MHz in the W3(OH) source carried out with the 32-m antenna of Svetloe Radio Astronomical Observatory.We found that the strongest activity during the period from December 2011 through March 2012 was exhibited by the region at radial velocity ?46.2km s?1. The region showed no activity in the ensuing time. The most striking outburst was the event that occurred on January 23, 2013 at UT 03:27. At that time the flux of the region increased by a factor of seven in 90 s, and then decreased down to the initial level. Such a time scale yields the upper estimate of 0.18 AU (2.7 × 1012 cm) for the linear size of the maser dot. In 2013–2014 intensity variations were found the ?47.6 and ?45.1km s?1 components with time scales on the order of 10 hours and anticorrelated behavior of the left- and right-hand polarization fluxes. This is the first time that such phenomena have been found in the behavior of OH maser emission, and they cannot be explained by any existing models of maser variability.  相似文献

Simultaneous measurements of the upper mesospheric NaD and OH(8,3) band emissions by meridional scanning photometers, and the OI 5577 Å, O2 Atmospheric band at 8645 Å, NaD and OH(8,3) band emissions by multi-channel tilting filter type zenith photometers have been carried out at Cachoeira Paulista (22.7°S, 45.0°W), Brazil. On two nights during the period May–August 1983, the meridional scanning observations showed horizontal intensity gradients and phase propagations. The nocturnal intensity variations on one of these occasions 13–14 June 1983, which was a magnetically disturbed night with 4 ?kp? 8, also showed vertical phase propagation. In this paper, we present these observations and discuss the possible effects of the horizontal wind system and of gravity wave propagation.  相似文献

We present single-baseline Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) measurements of excited OH 6.0-GHz masers and methanol 6.7-GHz masers for the source W3(OH). These allow us to compare the positions of individual maser spots of these two species to ∼15 mas accuracy for the first time, and to compare these with previously published positions of ground-state OH masers near 1.7 GHz and excited-state OH masers near 4.7 GHz. There is a strong association between OH 6035-MHz and 1665-MHz masers. OH and methanol have very similar distributions, but associations of individual masers are relatively rare: most methanol 6.7-GHz masers are within 100 mas of OH 6.0-GHz masers, but only four methanol masers are within 15 mas of an OH 6.0-GHz maser. There are no correspondences of either species with excited OH 4.7-GHz masers. Zeeman splitting of the 6.0-GHz OH lines indicates an ordered magnetic field ranging from 3.2 to 14.4 mG. The magnetic fields estimated from co-propagating masers such as 6035 and 1665 MHz are generally in good agreement with each other.  相似文献
