TAUVEX - Tel Aviv University UV Explorer is a space telescope that is currently being built in Israel, to be flown on board the Russian international sattelite SRG - Spectrum Roentgen Gamma, in late 1995 or early 1996. TAUVEX is an imager in the near UV spectral window. Its major goal is to make a survey of about 10% of the UV sky, in the range = 1350 - 3500Å. A successful operation of TAUVEX will partially fill an important gap in our recognition of the sky, namely the distribution and the nature of the celestial UV sources, which are still mostly unknown. TAUVEX will also operate as a fast multicolor photometer in its UV range of operation. TAUVEX is aligned in parallel to the common optical axix of all the other instruments on board SRG, most of which are telescopes and monitors for high energy radiation. SRG will be thus able to perform for the first time in history simultaneous astronomical observations in one and the same celestial body, that cover together 7 order of magnitude of the recorded radiation. The observations of TAUVEX can be greatly enhanced by ground base observations.  相似文献

The relegation algorithm extends the method of normalization by Lie transformations. Given a Hamiltonian that is a power series = 0+ 1+ ... of a small parameter , normalization constructs a map which converts the principal part 0into an integral of the transformed system — relegation does the same for an arbitrary function [G]. If the Lie derivative induced by [G] is semi-simple, a double recursion produces the generator of the relegating transformation. The relegation algorithm is illustrated with an elementary example borrowed from galactic dynamics; the exercise serves as a standard against which to test software implementations. Relegation is also applied to the more substantial example of a Keplerian system perturbed by radiation pressure emanating from a rotating source. This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In a statistical analysis of Debrecen Photoheliographic Results sunspot area data we find that the logarithmic deviation (logD) of the area decay rate D from the parabolic mean decay law (derived in the first paper in this series) follows a Gaussian probability distribution. As a consequence, the actual decay rate D and the time-averaged decay rate are also characterized by approximately lognormal distributions, as found in an earlier work. The correlation time of (logD) is about 3 days. We find a significant physical anticorrelation between (logD) and the amount of plage magnetic flux of the same polarity in an annulus around the spot on Kitt Peak magnetograms. The anticorrelation is interpreted in terms of a generalization of the turbulent erosion model of sunspot decay to the case when the flux tube is embedded in a preexisting homogeneous plage field. The decay rate is found to depend inversely on the value of this plage field, the relation being very close to logarithmic, i.e., the plage field acts as multiplicative noise in the decay process. A Gaussian probability distribution of the field strength in the surrounding plage will then naturally lead to a lognormal distribution of the decay rates, as observed. It is thus suggested that, beside other multiplicative noise sources, the environmental effect of surrounding plage fields is a major factor in the origin of lognormally distributed large random deviations from the mean law in the sunspot decay rates.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to suggest how detailed single-pulse observations of slow radio pulsars may be utilized to construct an empirical model for their emission. It links the observational synthesis developed in a series of papers by Rankin in the 1980s and 90s to the more recent empirical feedback model of Wright (2003a) by regarding the entire pulsar magnetosphere as a non-steady, non-linear interactive system with a natural built-in delay. It is argued that the enhanced role of the outer gap in such a system indicates an evolutionary link to younger pulsars, in which this region is thought to be highly active, and that pulsar magnetospheres should no longer be seen as being driven by events on the neutron stars polar cap, but as having more in common with planetary magnetospheres and auroral phenomena.Received: 8 May 2003, Published online: 14 November 2003 Correspondence to: Joanna M. Simple self-consistent models for non-neutral current sheets are considered. Characteristics of high-temperature turbulent current sheets (HTCS) with a small transverse component of magnetic field are determined for conditions in the solar corona. The energy output of such an HTCS is much larger than that of a neutral sheet. This makes it possible to consider the HTCS as an energy source not only in long-lived X-ray loops but also in flaring loops during the not or main phase of a flare. In this case, the magnetic reconnection velocity agrees with the observed velocity of the loop rise. Thus, these phenomena can be interpreted as a result of magnetic reconnection, for example, between new flux emerging from under the photosphere and an old magnetic field. The role of a longitudinal magnetic field in a current sheet is less important for HTCS. As a result of the compression of a longitudinal field, there appears an electric current circulating around the sheet. This current may induce strong Joule heating, if the compression is large. This additional heating is realized because of the annihilation of the main component, not the longitudinal component of magnetic field. The effect is small for HTCS, but may be significant for preflare current sheets.  相似文献

The stability of Riemann S ellipsoids inside an oblate halo with respect to the second form of oscillations is investigated. It is shown that some ellipsoids with reverse internal circulation of matter, which are stable inside a spherical halo or in its absence, become unstable with respect to second odd forms of oscillation inside an oblate halo. Here there is asymmetry between conjugate ellipsoids from the standpoint of their stability. Only those conjugate ellipsoids that correspond to higher frequencies of reverse circulation of matter than their corresponding angular rotation rates are unstable. The domains of instability of light and heavy conjugate embedded ellipsoids are obtained as a function of the oblateness measure and relative density of the halo.  相似文献

Time-dependent Fokker-Planck equation was numerically solved to demonstrate the dynamics of electrons in a uniform coronal loop with an applied axial DC electric field in the presence of ion-sound waves. This electric field is attributed to an anomalous resistivity due to the ion-sound turbulence caused by an initially given critical current density. The electron momentum distribution becomes a steady state in the whole turbulent region in a short time for which some electrons can be accelerated to the maximum electric potential K c. The steady energy distribution of electrons flowing out the end of the turbulent region has a very hard power-law-like spectrum with an index of about 0.75. The associated hard X-rays from a thick target also show a hard spectrum with a photon spectral index of 1.3. In order for to be much greater as observed in impulsive X-ray bursts, it is required that the source is a sum of many elementary loops with a power-law-like distribution in K c with an index = – + 2.5.  相似文献

The recent determination that the angular velocity of the Sun declines downward through the convective zone raises serious questions about the nature of the solar dynamo. The principal qualitative features of the Sun are the azimuthal fields that migrate toward the equator in association with an oscillating poloidal field which reverses at about the time of maximum appearance of bipolar magnetic regions. If decreases downward, or is negligible, the horizontal gradient in produces a dynamo with some of these essential characteristics. There is reason to think that the dynamo is confined to the lower half of the convective zone where has the opposite sign from the usual ( > 0 in the northern hemisphere) producing equatorward migration but reversing the sign of the associated poloidal field. Meridional circulation may play an essential role in shaping the dynamo. At the present time it is essential to measure accurately and determine the nature of the meridional circulation.Solar Cycle Workshop Paper.  相似文献

Disturbances in the heat flow in the solar convection zone are calculated with a turbulent thermal diffusion coefficient based on a mixing length approximation. As a consequence of the radiative boundary condition at the surface and the strong increase of the diffusion coefficient with depth, the convection zone resembles a thermally superconducting shell enclosed between a thin surface layer and an interior core of low thermal conductivity. Thermal disturbances originating in the convection zone do not penetrate into the interior, and penetrate only weakly through the solar surface. A thermally isolating obstacle buried entirely in the convection zone casts a shadow of reduced temperature at the solar surface; the brightening surrounding this shadow is undetectable. The shadow is weak unless the object is located close to the surface (less than 2000 km). Assuming a sunspot to be an area of reduced thermal conductivity which extends a finite depth into the convection zone, the heat flow around this obstacle is calculated. The heat flux blocked below the spot (missing flux) spreads over a very extended area surrounding the spot. The brightening corresponding to this missing flux is undetectable if the reduction of the thermal conductivity extends to a depth greater than 1000 km. It is concluded that no effect other than a decrease of the convective efficiency is needed to explain the temperature change observed at the solar surface in and around a sunspot. The energy balance is calculated between magnetic flux tubes, oriented vertically in the solar surface, (magnetic elements in active regions and the quiet network) and their surroundings. Near the visible surface radiation enters the tube laterally from the surrounding convection zone. The heating effect of this influx is important for small tubes (less than a few arcseconds). Due to this influx tubes less than about 1 in diameter can appear as bright structures irrespective of the amount of heat conveyed along the tube itself. Through the lateral influx, small tubes such as are found in the quiet network act as little leaks in the solar surface through which an excess heat flux escapes from the convection zone.  相似文献

One component of a three-fluid adiabatic plasma is under certain conditions contained in a restricted region of space by a large-scale electrostatic field generated within the plasma. The containment is discussed here for plasma consisting of ions and two populations of electrons characterized by different pitch angle distribution functions. The bouncing motion of electrons along open fieldlines between a magnetic mirror and an electrostatic mirror produces a velocity distribution function similar to that generated by bouncing particles on closed fieldlines.  相似文献

A simple self-consistent model of a high-temperature turbulent current sheet (HTCS) is considered. The anomalous character of plasma conductivity in a sheet is assumed to be due to gradient instabilities. The possibility of a low threshold of their excitation is demonstrated by an example of temperature-drift instability.Application of the HTCS model to the hot or main phase of a solar flare is discussed. The model consistently explains many observed properties of this phase.  相似文献

The numerous poorly understood differences between Ganymede and Callisto (the difference in the densities, in the degree of cratering and topography of the surface, the existence proper of craters and a difference of their distribution from that typical of bodies in the inner Solar System, etc.) find readily an explanation within the hypothesis of an explosion of Ganymede's icy envelope saturated by products of the volumetric electrolysis of ice. Similar explosions underwent earlier the ices on Io and Europa, and more recently, on Saturn's satellite Titan. One cannot exclude the possibility that the envelope of Callisto is also saturated by the electrolysis products and is only awaiting a strong impact which would trigger its explosion. The consequences of such an explosion would be devastating for the Earth's biosphere. About 109 ice fragments 0.3 km would appear in the orbits of Jovian comet family. Every day, a body causing an explosion 1 Mt of TNT equivalent would fall on the Earth, once a year- 103 Mt, and once in a man's life, 105 Mt. Apart from purely impact effects (super-tsunami, heating of the atmosphere) and the poisoning of the air by such compounds as HCN, CO, etc., impacts in excess of 105 Mt could produce a nuclear winter phenomenon resulting from the appearance of huge amounts of dust in the atmosphere.Such impact-related catastrophies led in the past to changes of geological epochs. An analysis is given of possible impact sources. The ~30Myr intervals between mass extinctions can be accounted for by purely random collisions, with only large impacts being capable of producing (1) a nuclear superwinter leading to a global catastrophe and (2) an ejection from the Earth of the Aten-type asteroids leading to subsequent secondary mass bombardment. A possibility is pointed out of the appearance of rare (once in about 108 yr) short-period comet showers originating from the detonation of the ices still remaining in the large Trojans. The high priority of a mission to Callisto to determine the degree of saturation of its ices by the electrolysis products and to evaluate its potential hazard for mankind is validated.  相似文献

We start from a reference frame for which the pseudo-Euclidean geometry holds, i.e., all laws in have the form of special relativity. The geometry of a reference frame , moving with constant velocity with regard to , is received by using the well-known Galilei-transformation for the covariant space-time vector. In the geometry is different from the pseudo-Euclidean one, i.e., the principle of special relativity does not hold. The velocity of light in is direction dependent but the null result of the Michelson-Morley experiment is received. Several useful transformation formulae are given. In particular, we obtain the Marinov-transformation as transformation from the frame to , and conversely. Maxwell's equations and the equations of motion in the reference frame are given. The theory is applied to some examples, e.g., the Doppler effect, the Fizeau experiment, the field of a charged particle, etc. The method can be generalized to an accelerated reference frame .  相似文献

Significance testing, parameter estimation and sensitivity calculations for -ray telescopes are discussed for single on-off astronomical observations. Four widely used significance test methods are examined by Monte-Carlo simulations. The Maximum Likelihood Ratio Method is found to consistently over-estimate the significance of an observation by a few percents whereas the Fisher's Exact Test is shown to be slightly conservative and always under-estimates the significance by about the same amount when the reported significance is about 3 and therefore it is preferred for -ray astronomy applications. Two methods for constructing a confidence interval and an upper limit for -ray source counts are discussed. It is found that the method based on the Smooth Transformation provides slightly better estimations. A new formula for the calculation of the sensitivity of a -ray telescope is presented, in contrast to the widely accepted one, and their statistical meanings are explained in detail.  相似文献

In order to obtain a better agreement between observed and computed values of the solar intensity, an improved temperature distribution is deduced for the range 0.02<0< 10. The intensity observations here considered refer to the wavelength region between 1980 and 129 500, and the center-limb variations generally go down to cos = 0.1. The improved model, given in Figure 4 and Table II, differs rather little from the Utrecht 1964 model, used here as a reference. It appears necessary to introduce an empirical correction function to be applied to the continuous absorption coefficient. This function was derived for the spectral region between 2000 and 130000 Å; it is shown in Figure 5.Furthermore, an extension of the model (1.10–7<0< 2.10–2) is deduced (see Table III and Figure 8), which reasonably well represents the observations of the ultraviolet solar flux ( 900–1700 Å).  相似文献

The nonlinear self-excited pulsations of population-II stars with mass 0.6M and luminosities from 128 to 1280L are studied. The pulsation periods are found to be in the range of 1.3 to 19 days. An increase of the stellar luminosity is shown to be accompanied by an increasing nonadiabaticity and decreasing efficiency of the radiative damping region. This leads to both an increase of the growth rate while pulsations are exciting and an increase of the oscillation amplitude of the limit cycle. In the models withL800L the efficiency of the radiative damping region becomes so small that amplitude growth ceases due to a dissipation of the mechanical energy by shocks in the stellar atmosphere. The models with periods of from 1.3 to 3 days show the bump on their light curves. The bump is connected with a travelling pulse generated at the antinode of the second overtone at maximum compression. The time delays estimated for the pulses reflected of the stellar core are in a good agreement with the pulse resonance condition proposed by Aikawa and Whitney (1983). The model with the period of 2.1 days revealed double resonance 0 = 22, 20 = 31 causing alternating oscillations with slightly different periods and amplitudes. The models with period of 10 days and longer reveal the resonance 0 = 21. This resonance causes the flat top on the light curve at a period of about 10 days and appearance of a shallow alternating minimum at longer periods, as is observed in RV Tau variables. The theoretical period-luminosity relation proposed for population-II cepheids is in good agreement with that obtained from observations.  相似文献

The utility of very high dispersion spectra (5–11 mm/Å) for the study of line profile and velocity structure in quiescent prominences is demonstrated by observations, taken with the spectregraphic slit positioned normal to the limb in H 6563 Å, He D3 5876 Å, and Ca+K 3933 Å. The emission profiles of both H and the K line often show a central reversal (absorption). Emission structures in the K-line can be complex with details as narrow as 0.04 Å. Frequently this structure consists of two distinct components: a central, strong, rather narrow line, and an often displaced, weak feature of undefined profile appearing as fuzz. It is suggested that this fuzz indicates an exchange of matter between the prominence and the corona.Visiting Astronomer, Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics, Oslo, Norway.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

We describe initial results of a program to image massive newly-formed stars with sub-arc second spatial resolution. We discuss high-precision diffraction-limited size measurements at =10 m made using the 3 m Lick telescope. The point-spread function has FWHM 0.7; deconvolution yields a spatial resolution of 0.35. We find that the core component of one such object, LkH 101, is unresolved at these scales, and we are able to set a 95%-confidence upper limit of 270 AU for the diameter of the circumstellar dust shell. This places the dust at the same radial scale as a strong ionized stellar wind region seen at radio wavelengths. Our observations, when combined with published spectral observations, rule out an optically thick circumstellar disk but allow a radially thin, anisotropic distribution of dust, or alternatively an isotropic distribution of dust with a narrow range of large grain sizes.  相似文献

Analytic and numerical results are presented for the growth rate of Langmuir waves due to a loss-cone distribution of energetic electrons. The effect of the magnetic field on the wave-particle interaction is ignored, and the resonance condition is described in terms of a resonance hyperboloid in momentum space. The collisional evolution of a distribution of magnetically trapped electrons is followed numerically to show how a gap distribution develops. The growth is most favorable for an intermediate sized loss cone ( 45 °) and a gap distribution in which the mean energy of the suprathermal electrons is much larger than the thermal energy of the background electrons. It is plausible that loss-cone gap distributions do develop in the solar corona, and that they should lead to second harmonic plasma emission weakly polarized in the x-mode.  相似文献
