We study the evolution of solid, CO white dwarfs after explosive carbon ignition at central densities around 1010 g cm–3 triggered by steady accretion in a close binary system, in order to elucidate whether these stars can collapse to form a neutron star. We show that as long as the velocity of the burning front remains below a critical value of 0.006c s (60 km s–1), gravitational collapse is the final fate. These calculations support the accretion-induced collapse (AIC) scenario for the origin of a fraction of low-mass X-ray binaries.Paper presented at the 11th European Regional Astronomical Meetings of the IAU on New Windows to the Universe, held 3–8 July, 1989, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.  相似文献

New results concerning prominence observations and in particular the prominence–corona transition region (PCTR) are presented. In order to cover a temperature range from 2 × 104 to 7 × 105 K, several emission lines in many different ionization states were observed with SUMER and CDS on board SOHO. EM and DEM were measured through the whole PCTR. We compared the prominence DEM with the DEM from other solar structures (active region, coronal hole and the chromosphere–corona transition region (CCTR)). We notice a displacement of the prominence DEM minimum towards lower temperatures with respect to the minimum of the other structures. Electron density and pressure diagnostics have been made from the observed C III lines. Local electron density and pressure for T ∼ 7 × 104 K are respectively log N e = 9.30−0.34 +0.30 and 0.0405−0.014 +0.012. Extrapolations over the entire PCTR temperature range are in good agreement with previous SOHO results (Madjarska et al., 1999). We also provide values of electron density and pressure in two different regions of the prominence (center and edge). The Doppler velocity in the PCTR shows a trend to increase with temperature (at least up to 30 km s -1 at T ∼ 7 × 104 K), an indication of important mass flows. A simple morphological model is proposed from density and motion diagnostics. If the prominence is taken as a magnetic flux tube, one can derive an opening of the field lines with increasing temperature. If the prominence is represented as a collection of threads, their number increases with temperature from 20 to 800. Derived filling factors can reach values as low as 10−3 for a layer thickness of the order of 5000 km. The variation of non-thermal velocities is determined for the first time, in the temperature range from 2 × 104 to 7 × 105 K. The quite clear similarity with the CCTR non-thermal velocities would indicate that heating mechanisms in the PCTR could be the same as in the CCTR (wave propagation, turbulence MHD).  相似文献

Based on spectral observations of active region NOAA 8545 on 19 May 1999, we describe the processes responsible for non-thermal long-lasting radio emission and for narrow-band non-drifting bursts observed at the same time. Non-thermal long-lasting radio emission consisted of two components: short-duration (1–2 s) microbursts with fluxes about 0.001 s.f.u. and continuum emission with growing spectrum in the range of 1000–2000 MHz. Energetic electrons continuously existed in the active region for more than 2.2 hours. The nature and parameters of microbursts were discussed by Bogod, Mercier, and Yasnov (2001). Here we consider the continuum source nature. It is shown that the model, taking into account the cyclotron loss-cone instability of hot electrons and the generation of plasma waves at the upper hybrid frequency, may explain the observed continuum source parameters. For the narrow-band non-drifting bursts we consider two models: the first taking into account an excitation of weak shock waves across the magnetic field and the second with an excitation of the upper hybrid waves under the double plasma resonance. Continuum source parameters are close to the last model. Our estimations for the magnetic field strength are as follows: H=120–126 G, which is valid for the region where the electron density of background plasmas n=(1.4–1.9) ×109 cm–3; H=180–190 G for the region where n=(3.0–4.3) ×109 cm–3; H=290 G for the region where n e=2.5×1010 cm–3; and H=350 G for the region where n e=3.5×1010 cm–3. The speed of the fast electrons is about 0.10–0.14 c.  相似文献

The masers of E-type methanol in orion KL and SGR B2   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Using a simplified model the statistical equilibrium and radiative transfer equations of E-type-CH3OH are solved for Orion KL and SgrB2. According to our calculation results and the observation data taken by Matsakiset al. (1980) and Morimotoet al. (1985a, b), the physical conditions of both sources are estimated. In theJ 2-J 1 E methanol maser region of Orion KL, the density, kinetic temperature, dust temperature, and the fractional abundance are 0.8–2×106 cm–3, 150, 30–90 K, 0.8–8×10–6. In the 4–1-30 E and 5–1-40 E methanol maser region of Sgr B2 the correspondance physical conditions above are 104 cm3, 45, 23 K, and 7×10–7, respectively.  相似文献

Within the framework of FLRW cosmology withk=+1 a singularity free model of the Universe is proposed which readily accounts for the origin of the Big-Bang and for the preponderance of matter over anti-matter. It is also free from the problems of accounting for the observed large-scale homogeneity and isotropy of the Universe as well as from the problems of horizon and flatness. It is pointed out that the collapsing universe might have acted as an ultra-high energy particle accelerator. In the collapsing phase of the Universe, when the interparticle distances10–16 cm, the electromagnetic and weak interactions might have unified into electroweak interaction and as the collapse proceeded further the entire matter in the Universe might have been converted into quark-gluon plasma permeated by leptons. The gravitational energy released during the collapse might have been locked in this plasma. Ass approached 10–28 cm, grand unification of electroweak and strong interactions might have occurred. It is also suggested that, with further collapse, whens<10–33 cm super-symmetry (SUSY)—i.e., the unification of all the four interactions (viz., electromagnetic, weak, strong, and gravitational) might have occurred. During this process gravitinos, the supersymmetric partners of graviton might have been produced. As a result of the exchange of a pair of virtual gravitinos between two particles an ultra-strong repulsive force between them might have been generated. Due to this ultra-strong repulsive interaction between particles the motion of the Universe might have been reversed, i.e., the Universe might have started expanding. During expansion, whens10–28 cm, SUSY might have broken down spontaneously toSU 5 and gravity. Ass increased from 10–28 to 10–16 cm, the gravitational energy locked in the quark-gluon plasma might have been released with a gigantic explosion, the so-called Big-Bang. It is estimated here that during this Big-Bang more than 1082 GeV of energy might have been released. Whens10–16 cm,SU 5 might have broken down spontaneously toSU 3 andU 1. Expansion beyond this stage might have occurred in the manner described by the standard cosmology. It is further suggested that in due course of time expansion will be followed by contraction and the cycle of contraction-expansion-contraction will be repeated ad infinitum.  相似文献

With the equations of neutrino heat conductivity being used, the neutrino light curve is calculated for the spherically symmetrical collapse of an iron-oxygen 2M star (Figure 1) up to the formation of a hot hydrostatically equilibrium neutron star. The total energy, radiated in the form of muon and electron neutrinos, is 5.8×1053 erg (0.16Mc 2). The mean neutrino particle energy is 12 MeV for all the time the collapse proceeds. The maximum neutrino luminosity value is equal to 3×1053 erg s–1. For a 10M star collapse, the luminosity maximum 3×1054 erg s–1 takes place just at the moment of the formation of a black hole inside the collapsing star. The total radiated energy in this case is about 0.08Mc 2. The set of calculations, allowing for the deposition of momentum by means of neutrino-nuclear coherent scattering, brings us to a conclusion that the envelope outburst is only possible if the scattering cross-section is 50 times larger than the value experimentally accepted (inequality 20)).  相似文献

The hydrodynamical axially symmetric collapse of a 3M -cloud with an initial density of 10–20 g cm–3 has been investigated. In order to first arrive at an equilibrium configuration a temperature of 15 K has been assumed. During about 9 free-fall times the cloud has artificially been cooled down to the (Jeans-) critical temperature of 8 K. Thus, the dynamical collapse studied in this paper starts from an equilibrium configuration following a slow quasi-hydrostatic contraction. Two sequences corresponding to a different choice of the initial angular velocity i = 10–14 s–1 (Case A) and i = 10–15 s–1 (Case B) have been computed. In both cases a fast spinning, optically thick disk-like core of low mass and temperature forms for which fission into two or even more pieces is very likely to occur.Paper presented at the Conference on Protostars and Planets, held at the Planetary Science Institute, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona, between January 3 and 7, 1978.  相似文献

We report on observations, with sub-parsec resolution, of neutral hydrogen seen in absorption in the λ=21 cm line against the nucleus of the active spiral galaxy NGC 5793. The absorption line consists of three components separated in both location as well as velocity. We derive HI column densities of 2×1022 cm−2 assuming a gas spin temperature of 100 K. For the first time we are able to reliably estimate the HI cloud sizes (≈15 pc) and atomic gas densities (≈200 cm−3). Our results suggest that the HI gas is not associated with the <10 pc region which presumably contains the H2O masers, but it is more distant from the nucleus, and is probably associated with the r1 kpc gas seen in CO.  相似文献

Five outer planets are numerically integrated over five million years in the Newtonian frame. The argument of Pluto's perihelion librates about 90 degrees with an amplitude of about 23 degrees. The period of the libration depends on the mass of Pluto: 4.0×106 years forM pluto=2.78×10–6 M sun and 3.8×106 years forM pluto=7.69×10–9 M sun, which is the newly determined mass. The motion of Neptune's perihelion is more sensitive to the mass of Pluto. ForM pluto=7.69×10–9 M sun, the perihelion of Neptune does circulate counter-clockwise and forM pluto=2.78×10–6 M sun, it does not circulate and the Neptune's eccentricity does not have a minimum. With the initial conditions which do not lie in the resonance region between Neptune and Pluto, a close approach between them takes place frequently and the orbit of Pluto becomes unstable and irregular.  相似文献

On the basis of Sobolev's method, the population of 30 levels of hydrogen atom is determined allowing for the radiative and collision processes of the heating and ionization of the medium with velocity gradient gradv=10–9–10–11s–1, electron temperatureT e=104 K-2×104 K and electron densityN e=1010 cm–3–1011 cm–3. The central source radiation is characterized by a power spectrum with spectral indices varying from 0 to 2. A region of possible physical conditions is found where the thermal diffuse radiation of the envelope exceeds the emission in the Balmer H line.  相似文献

The cosmic ray primary composition in the energy range between 1015 and 1016 eV, i.e., around the “knee” of the primary spectrum, has been studied through the combined measurements of the EAS-TOP air shower array (2005 m a.s.l., 105 m2 collecting area) and the MACRO underground detector (963 m a.s.l., 3100 m w.e. of minimum rock overburden, 920 m2 effective area) at the National Gran Sasso Laboratories. The used observables are the air shower size (Ne) measured by EAS-TOP and the muon number (Nμ) recorded by MACRO. The two detectors are separated on average by 1200 m of rock, and located at a respective zenith angle of about 30°. The energy threshold at the surface for muons reaching the MACRO depth is approximately 1.3 TeV. Such muons are produced in the early stages of the shower development and in a kinematic region quite different from the one relevant for the usual NμNe studies. The measurement leads to a primary composition becoming heavier at the knee of the primary spectrum, the knee itself resulting from the steepening of the spectrum of a primary light component (p, He) of Δγ=0.7±0.4 at E04×1015 eV. The result confirms the ones reported from the observation of the low energy muons at the surface (typically in the GeV energy range), showing that the conclusions do not depend on the production region kinematics. Thus, the hadronic interaction model used (CORSIKA/QGSJET) provides consistent composition results from data related to secondaries produced in a rapidity region exceeding the central one. Such an evolution of the composition in the knee region supports the “standard” galactic acceleration/propagation models that imply rigidity dependent breaks of the different components, and therefore breaks occurring at lower energies in the spectra of the light nuclei.  相似文献

Particle stirring in turbulent gas disks: Including orbital oscillations   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We describe the diffusion and random velocities of solid particles due to stochastic forcing by turbulent gas. We include the orbital dynamics of Keplerian disks, both in-plane epicycles and vertical oscillations. We obtain a new result for the diffusion of solids. The Schmidt number (ratio of gas to particle diffusivity) is Sc≈1+(Ωtstop)2, in terms of the particle stopping time tstop and the orbital frequency Ω. The standard result, Sc=1+tstop/teddy, in terms of the eddy turnover time, teddy, is shown to be incorrect. The main difference is that Sc rises quadratically, not linearly, with stopping time. Consequently, particles larger than 10 cm in protoplanetary disks will suffer less radial diffusion and will settle closer to the midplane. Such a layer of boulders would be more prone to gravitational collapse. Our predictions of RMS speeds, vertical scale height and diffusion coefficients will help interpret numerical simulations. We confirm previous results for the vertical stirring of particles (scale heights and random velocities), and add a correction for arbitrary ratios of eddy to orbital times. The particle layer becomes thinner for teddy>1/Ω with the strength of turbulent diffusion held fixed. We use two analytic techniques—the Hinze–Tchen formalism and the Fokker–Planck equation with velocity diffusion—with identical results when the regimes of validity overlap. We include simple physical arguments for the scaling of our results.  相似文献

In a previous paper Lyttleton (1976) has shown that the apparent secular accelerations of the Sun and Moon, as given by de Sitter, can be largely explained if the Earth is contracting at the rate required by the phase-change hypothesis for the nature of the core. More reliable values for these accelerations have since become available which warrant a redetermination of the various effects concerned on the basis of constantG, and this is first carried out in the present paper. The lunar tidal couple, which is the same whetherG is changing or not, is found to be (4.74±0.38)×1023 cgs, about three-quarters that yielded by the de Sitter values, while within the theory the Moon would take correspondingly longer to reach close proximity to the Earth at about 1.5×109 years ago.The more accurate values of the accelerations enable examination to be made of the effects that a decreasingG would have, and it is shown that a valueG/G=–3×10–11 yr–1 can be weakly satisfied compared with the close agreement found on the basis of constantG, while a value as large numerically asG/G=–6×10–11 yr–1 seems to be definitely ruled out. On the iron-core model, an intrinsic positive component of acceleration of the angular velocity cannot be reconciled at all with the secular accelerations even for constantG, and far less so ifG is decreasing at a rate suggested by any recent cosmological theory.ItG=0, the amount of contraction available for mountain-building would correspond to a reduction of surface area of about 49×106 km2 and a volume to be redistributed of 160×109 km3 if the time of collapse were 2.5×109 years ago. For earlier times, the values are only slightly reduced. IfG/G=–3×10–11 yr–1, the corresponding values are 44×106 km2 and 138×109 km3 for collapse at –2.5×109 yr, and not importantly smaller at 38×106 km2 and 122×109 km3 for collapse at –4.5×109 yr. Any of these values would suffice to account in order of magnitude for all the eras of mountain-building. An intense brief period of mountain-building on an immense scale would result from the Ramsey-collapse at whatever time past it may have occurred.  相似文献

We present here the results of emission tomography studies, based on a new differential deconvolution method (DDM) of Laplace transform inversion, which we use for reconstruction of the coronal emission measure distributions in the quiet Sun, coronal holes and plage areas. Two methods are explored. The first method is based on the deconvolution of radioemission brightness spectra in a wide wavelength range (1 mm–100 cm) for temperature profile reconstructions from the corona to the deeper chromosphere. The second method uses radio brightness measurements in the cm–dm range to give a coronal column emission measure (EM).Our results are based on RATAN-600 observations in the range 2.0–32 cm supplemented by the data of other observatories during the period near minimum solar activity. This study gives results that agree with known estimates of the coronal EM values, but reveals the absence of any measurable quantities of EM in the transition temperature region 3 × 104 –105 K for all studied large-scale structures. The chromospheric temperature structure (T e = 20,000–5800 K) is quite similar for all objects with extremely low-temperature gradients at deep layers. Some refraction effects were detected in the decimeter range for all Types of large-scale structures, which suggests the presence of dense and compact loops (up to N e =(1–3)× 109 cm-3 number density) for the quiet-Sun coronal regions with temperature T e > 5× 10-5 K.  相似文献

Strong absorption satellite lines of CaI 6572 were found on spectrograms taken on three successive days just after the fourth contact of the 1971–72 eclipse of Zeta Aurigae. The radial velocities of the satellite lines are –88 km s–1, –74 km s–1, and –180 km–1, respectively, relative to the K-type primary star (K4 Ib). These absorptions should be due to a circumstellar cloud in which the column density of neutral calcium atoms is 1×1017 cm–2 and the turbulent velocities come to 20–50 km s–1. It is suggested that the cloud may be formed by the rocket-effect of the Lyman quanta of the B-type component (B6 V). We estimate the density in the cloud to be 2×1011 atoms cm–3 fors=10R K and 2×1010 atoms cm–3 fors=102 R K, wheres denotes the distance of the cloud from the K star andR K the K star's radius. The mass loss rate of the K-type component is also estimated to be about 10–7 M yr–1, assuming that the expansion of the K star occurs isotropically.  相似文献

The motion of dust structures in the circumnuclear region of comet Hale–Bopp is studied. About 270 envelope images were obtained with the AZT-8 reflector (D = 0.7 m, F = 28 m) and the Filin-3 image intensifier. We carried out our observations at the observational station of the Astronomical Observatory of Shevchenko Kiev State University in the village of Lesniki (near Kiev). The recording from the image-intensifier screen was made on Foto-100 film during 23 nights from March 24 to May 10, 1997. The circumnuclear region was imaged both in white light (without filters) and with IHW CO+ (ef = 426 nm), C3 (ef = 496 nm), C2 (ef = 514 nm), and RC (red continuum, ef = 684 nm) narrow-band interference filters. Based on our measurements of the radial expansion of dust structures, we determined the velocities, 0.61–1.99 km s–1; accelerations, from –18.3 × 10–3 to 4.0 × 10–3 m s–2; and rotation period of the cometary nucleus, 111.41h ± 0.05h.  相似文献

New theoretical emission line ratios for the Be-sequence ions Mgix and Sixi are presented. A comparison with observational data for two solar flares and an active region loop obtained with the Harvard EUV spectrometer and NRL XUV spectroheliograph aboard Skylab reveals that these plasmas are in ionization equilibrium at coronal temperatures. Unfortunately most of the density diagnostics are not particularly useful under solar plasma conditions, as they vary only slightly over the electron density range 108–1013cm–3. However the Sixi ratioI(3 P e 2 -3 P o 2)/I(3 P o 11 S e 0) is density sensitive in the range 108 to 1010cm–3, which is representative of electron densities found in solar active regions or small flares.  相似文献

Numerical integration of particle trajectories is performed to evaluate the statistical acceleration coefficients D TT for 1 to 100 MeV protons in a solar wind corotating interaction region (CIR) seen at 2.5 and 5.0 AU. Acceleration is followed in the solar wind reference frame and is due to random wave-particle interactions and to random drift motion in moderate scale field gradients. D TT due to the first effect reaches a peak value of 4 × 10 –7 MeV2 s–1 post shock at 10 MeV at 2.5 AU consistent with estimates based both upon cyclotron resonance and transit time damping theory. D TT from the second effect is less well established but is of the order of 10–7 MeV2 s–1 at 10 MeV, 5 AU. A comparison is made between the time constant for statistical acceleration within this CIR and estimates for diffuse shock acceleration and adiabatic deceleration. All three time constants are of the same order, but deceleration is faster than shock acceleration which in turn is faster than statistical acceleration.  相似文献

The collapse of rotating clouds is investigated using three-dimensional self-gravitating hydrodynamical simulations. We take into account the detailed non-equilibrium chemical reactions for primordial gas that consists of pure hydrogen. The parameters of the collapse and the condition of the fragmentation are compared with those of isothermal clouds. It is shown that the geometrical flatness of the central region of the disc is a good indicator for predicting whether the clouds fragment or not. If the flatness is greater than the critical value, ∼ 4π, a cloud fragments into filaments and blobs. On the other hand, if the flatness is smaller than the critical value, fragmentation is not expected before the central core formation even if the cooling is efficient and the total mass becomes much greater than the local Jeans mass at the centre. The critical mass is found to be 3 × 106 M for a typical initial condition. If the initial cloud mass is smaller than this critical value, fragmentation before the central core formation is not expected. For a typically estimated first collapsing cosmological baryonic object, M ≲ 106 M, central core formation is expected and will have a significant effect on the later evolution of the whole system. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
