Spatial fields of temperature, velocity, overlithostatic pressure, and horizontal stresses in the Earth’s mantle are studied in two-dimensional (2D) numerical Cartesian models of mantle convection with variable viscosity. The calculations are carried out for three different patterns of the viscosity distribution in the mantle: (a) an isoviscous model, (b) a four-layer viscosity model, and (c) a temperature- and pressure-dependent viscosity model. The pattern of flows, the stresses, and the surface heat flow are strongly controlled by the viscosity distribution. This is connected with the formation of a cold highly viscous layer on the surface, which is analogous to the oceanic lithosphere and impedes the heat transfer. For the Rayleigh number Ra = 107, the Nusselt number, which characterizes the heat transfer, is Nu = 34, 28, and 15 in models with constant, four-layered, and p, T-dependent viscosity, respectively. In all three models, the values of overlithostatic pressure and horizontal stresses σ xx in a vast central region of the mantle, which occupies the bulk of the entire volume of the computation domain, are approximately similar, varying within ±5 MPa (±50 bar). This follows from the fact that the dimensionless mantle viscosity averaged over volume is almost similar in all these models. In the case of temperature- and pressure-dependent viscosity, the overlithostatic pressure and stress σ xx fields exhibit much stronger concentration towards the horizontal boundaries of the computation domain compared to the isoviscous model. This effect occurs because the upwellings and downwellings in a highly viscous region experience strong variations in both amplitude and direction of flow velocity near the horizontal boundaries. In the models considered with the parameters used, the stresses in the upper and lower mantle are approximately identical, that is, there is no denser concentration of stresses in the upper or lower mantle. In contrast to the overlithostatic pressure field, the fields of horizontal stresses σ xx in all models do not exhibit deep roots of highly viscous downwelling flows.  相似文献

The ∼0.2 mm/yr uplift of Hawaiian islands Lanai and Molokai and Hawaiian swell topography pose important constraints on the structure and dynamics of mantle plumes. We have formulated 3-D models of mantle convection to investigate the effects of plume-plate interactions on surface vertical motions and swell topography. In our models, the controlling parameters are plume radius, excess plume temperature, and upper mantle viscosity. We have found that swell height and swell width constraints limit the radius of the Hawaiian plume to be smaller than 70 km. The additional constraint from the uplift at Lanai requires excess plume temperature to be greater than 400 K. If excess plume temperature is 400 K, models with plume radius between 50 and 70 km and upper mantle viscosity between 1020 and 3×1020 Pa s satisfy all the constraints. Our results indicate that mantle plume in the upper mantle may be significantly hotter than previously suggested. This has important implications for mantle convection and mantle melting. In addition to constraining plume dynamics, our models also provide a mechanism to produce the observed uplift at Lanai and Molokai that has never been satisfactorily explained before.  相似文献

Heat and mass transfer processes in the conduit of a thermochemical plume located beneath an oceanic plate far from a mid-ocean ridge (MOR) proceed under conditions of horizontal convective flows penetrating the plume conduit. In the region of a mantle flow approaching the plume conduit (in the frontal part of the conduit), the mantle material heats and melts. The melt moves through the plume conduit at the average velocity of flow v and is crystallized on the opposite side of the conduit (in the frontal part of the conduit). The heat and the chemical dope transferred by the conduit to the mantle flow are carried away by crystallized mantle material at the velocity v.The local coefficients of heat transfer at the boundary of the plume conduit are theoretically determined and the balance of heat fluxes through the side of the plume conduit per linear meter of the conduit height. The total heat generation rate, transmitted by the Hawaiian plume into the upper and lower mantle, is evaluated. With the use of regular patterns of heat transfer in the lower mantle, which is modeled on the horizontal layer, heated from below and cooled from above, the diameter of the plume source, the kinematic viscosity of the melt in the plume conduit, and the velocity of horizontal lower-mantle flows are evaluated and the dependences of the temperature drop, viscosity and Rayleigh number for the lower mantle on the diameter of the plume source are presented.  相似文献

Viscosity is a fundamental property of the mantle which determines the global geodynamical processes. According to the microscopic theory of defects and laboratory experiments, viscosity exponentially depends on temperature and pressure, with activation energy and activation volume being the parameters. The existing laboratory measurements are conducted with much higher strain rates than in the mantle and have significant uncertainty. The data on postglacial rebound only allow the depth distributions of viscosity to be reconstructed. Therefore, spatial distributions (along the depth and lateral) are as of now determined from the models of mantle convection which are calculated by the numerical solution of the convection equations, together with the viscosity dependences on pressure and temperature (PT-dependences). The PT-dependences of viscosity which are presently used in the numerical modeling of convection give a large scatter in the estimates for the lower mantle, which reaches several orders of magnitude. In this paper, it is shown that it is possible to achieve agreement between the calculated depth distributions of viscosity throughout the entire mantle and the postglacial rebound data. For this purpose, the values of the volume and energy of activation for the upper mantle can be taken from the laboratory experiments, and for the lower mantle, the activation volume should be reduced twice at the 660-km phase transition boundary. Next, the reduction in viscosity by an order of magnitude revealed at the depths below 2000 km by the postglacial rebound data can be accounted for by the presence of heavy hot material at the mantle bottom in the LLSVP zones. The models of viscosity spatial distribution throughout the entire mantle with the lithospheric plates are presented.  相似文献

The influence of thermochemical convection on the fixity of mantle plumes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A general feature of both isochemical and thermochemical studies of mantle convection is that horizontal plume velocities tend to be smaller than typical convective velocities, however, it is not clear which system leads to a greater fixity of mantle plumes. We perform two- and three-dimensional numerical calculations and compare both thermochemical and isochemical cases with similar convective vigor to determine whether presence of a dense component in the mantle can lead to smaller ratios of horizontal plume velocity to surface velocity. We investigate different viscosity and density contrasts between chemical components in the thermochemical calculations, and we perform isochemical calculations with both free-slip and no-slip bottom boundary conditions. We then compare both visually and quantitatively the results of the thermochemical and isochemical calculations to determine which leads to greater plume fixity. We find that horizontal plume velocities for thermochemical calculations are similar to those from isochemical calculations with no-slip bottom boundary conditions. In addition, we find that plumes tend to be more fixed for isochemical cases with free-slip bottom boundary conditions for two-dimensional calculations, however, in three dimensions, we find that plume fixity is similar to that observed in thermochemical calculations.  相似文献

A new conceptual model of mantle convection is constructed for consideration of the origin of hotspot plumes, using recent evidence from seismology, high-pressure experiments, geodynamic modeling, geoid inversion studies, and post-glacial rebound analyses. This conceptual model delivers several key points. Firstly, some of the small-scale mantle upwellings observed as hotspots on the Earth's surface originate at the base of the mantle transition zone (MTZ), in which the Archean granitic continental material crust (TTG; tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite) with abundant radiogenic elements is accumulated. Secondly, the TTG crust and the subducted oceanic crust that have accumulated at the base of MTZ could act as thermal or mechanical insulators, leading to the formation of a hot and less viscous layer just beneath the MTZ; which may enhance the instability of plume generation at the base of the MTZ. Thirdly, the origin of some hotspot plumes is isolated from the large low shear-wave velocity provinces (LLSVPs) under Africa and the South Pacific. I consider that the conceptual model explains why almost all the hotspots around Africa are located above the margins of the African LLSVP. Because a planetary-scale trench system surrounding a “Pangean cell” has been spatially stable throughout the Phanerozoic, a large amount of the oceanic crustal layer is likely to be trapped in the MTZ under the Pangean cell. Therefore, under Africa, almost all of the hotspot plumes originate from the base of the MTZ, where a large amount of TTG and/or oceanic crusts has accumulated. This conceptual model may explain the fact that almost all the hotspots around Africa are located on margins above the African LLSVP. It is also considered that some of the hotspot plumes under the South Pacific thread through the TTG/oceanic crusts accumulated around the bottom of the MTZ, and some have their roots in the South Pacific LLSVP while others originate from the MTZ. The numerical simulations of mantle convection also speculate that the Earth's mantle convection is not thermally double-layered at the ringwoodite to perovskite + magnesiowüstite (Rw  Pv + Mw) phase boundary, because of its gentle negative Clapeyron slope. This is in contrast with some traditional images of mantle convection that have independent convection cells between the upper and lower mantle. These numerical studies speculate that the generation of stagnant slab at the base of the MTZ (as seismically observed globally) may not be due to the negative Clapeyron slope, and may instead be related to a viscosity increase (i.e., a viscosity jump) at the Rw  Pv + Mw phase boundary, or to a chemically stratified boundary between the upper and the lower mantle, as suggested by a recent high-pressure experiment.  相似文献

If the interpretation of the D″ layer at the base of the mantle as a thermal boundary layer, with a temperature increment in the order of 800 K, is correct, then the formation of deep-mantle plumes to vent material from it appears inevitable. We demonstrate quantitatively that the strong temperature dependence of viscosity guides the upward flow into long-lived chimneys that are ~ 20 km in diameter near the base of the mantle and decrease in width with progressive upward softening and partial melting of plume material. The speed of flow up the axis of the plume is correspondingly fast; 1.6 m y?1 at the base and 4.8 m y?1 at 670 km depth. Thermal diffusive spreading of a heated plume is compensated by a slow horizontal convergence of mantle material toward the chimney in response to the lower pressure there. This convergence, which contributes only a small increment to the flux of material up the plume, also serves to throttle the flow in the chimney. The global plume mass flux necessary to transport 1.6 × 1012 W of core heat upward through the mantle is 1.8 × 106 kg s?1. At its base, plume material is probably still significantly below its solidus or eutectic temperature, but substantial partial melting is very likely as it rises. We speculate that a small fraction of this fluid component eventually emerges at the surface in “hot spots”, with the fate of the remainder being unknown. The behaviour and properties of D″ and of plumes are closely coupled. Not only are plumes a necessary consequence of a thermal boundary layer, but their existence is impossible without that layer.  相似文献

The coexistence of stationary mantle plumes with plate-scale flow is problematic in geodynamics. We present results from laboratory experiments aimed at understanding the effects of an imposed large-scale circulation on thermal convection at high Rayleigh number (106≤Ra≤109) in a fluid with a temperature-dependent viscosity. In a large tank, a layer of corn syrup is heated from below while being stirred by large-scale flow due to the opposing motions of a pair of conveyor belts immersed in the syrup at the top of the tank. Three regimes are observed, depending on the ratio V of the imposed horizontal flow velocity to the rise velocity of plumes ascending from the hot boundary, and on the ratio λ of the viscosity of the interior fluid to the viscosity of the hottest fluid in contact with the bottom boundary. When V≪1 and λ≥1, large-scale circulation has a negligible effect on convection and the heat flux is due to the formation and rise of randomly spaced plumes. When V>10 and λ>100, plume formation is suppressed entirely, and the heat flux is carried by a sheet-like upwelling located in the center of the tank. At intermediate V, and depending on λ, established plume conduits are advected along the bottom boundary and ascending plumes are focused towards the central upwelling. Heat transfer across the layer occurs through a combination of ascending plumes and large-scale flow. Scaling analyses show that the bottom boundary layer thickness and, in turn, the basal heat flux q depend on the Peclet number, Pe, and λ. When λ>10, q∝Pe1/2 and when λ→1, q∝(Peλ)1/3, consistent with classical scalings. When applied to the Earth, our results suggest that plate-driven mantle flow focuses ascending plumes towards upwellings in the central Pacific and Africa as well as into mid-ocean ridges. Furthermore, plumes may be captured by strong upwelling flow beneath fast-spreading ridges. This behavior may explain why hotspots are more abundant near slow-spreading ridges than fast-spreading ridges and may also explain some observed variations of mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) geochemistry with spreading rate. Moreover, our results suggest that a potentially significant fraction of the core heat flux is due to plumes that are drawn into upwelling flows beneath ridges and not observed as hotspots.  相似文献

In our previous works, based on numerical models, it was shown that under certain conditions a hot material can rise in portions in the tails of thermal mantle plumes. The spectrum of these pulsations can correspond to the observed spectra of catastrophic hotspot eruptions. Since most of the existing numerical models of thermal convection for the mantle of the present Earth do not reveal these pulsations, in this work, we analyze the physical cause and initiation conditions of pulsations of thermal plumes. The results of a numerical solution of the thermal convection equations for a material with varying parameters in the extended Boussinesq approximation are presented. It is shown how the structure of the convection is transformed with the increase of convection intensity. At the Rayleigh numbers Ra > 106, convection becomes unsteady, and the configuration of the ascending and descending flows changes. The new flow emerging at the mantle bottom acquires a mushroom shape with a head and a tail. After the rise of the plume’s head to the surface, the tail remains in the mantle in the form of a quasi-stationary hot steam. It turns out that at Ra ~ 5 × 107, the thermal mantle plume becomes pulsating and its tail is in fact a heated channel through which the hot material rises in successive portions. At the Rayleigh numbers Ra > 5 × 108, the tail of the thermal plume breaks and the plume becomes a regular conveyor of separate ascending portions of the hot material, which are referred to as thermals. Thus, thermal convection with pulsating plumes takes place at the transitional stage from the regime of quasi-stationary plumes to the regime of thermals.  相似文献

In this study, we have modeled the density(ρ) and bulk sound velocity(VΦ) profiles of the bottom lower mantle using the experimental thermal equation of state(EoS) parameters of lower-mantle minerals, including bridgmanite, ferropericlase,CaSiO3-perovskite, and post-perovskite. We re-evaluated the literature pressure-volume-temperature relationships of these minerals using a self-consistent pressure scale in order to avoid the long-standing pressure scale problem and to provide more reliable constraints on the thermal EoS parameters. With the obtained thermal EoS parameters, we have constructed the ρ and VΦ profiles of the bottom lower mantle in different composition, mineralogy, and temperature models. Our modelling results show that the variations of chemistry, mineralogy, and temperature have different seismic signatures from each other. The Fe and Al enrichment at the bottom lower mantle can cause an increase in ρ but greatly lower VΦ. A change in mineralogy needs to be considered with the lateral variation in temperature. The cold slabs will be shown as denser regions compared to the normal mantle because of the combined effect of a lower temperature and the presence of a denser post-perovskite at a shallower depth, whereas the hot regions will have a 1–2% lower ρ than the normal mantle. VΦ of both cold slabs and hot regions will be lower than the normal mantle when bridgmanite is the dominant phase in the normal mantle, yet they will be greater once bridgmanite transforms into post-perovskite in the normal mantle. Our modeling also shows that the presence of a(Fe, Al)-enriched bridgmanite thermal pile above the core-mantle boundary will exhibit a seismic signature of enhanced ρ and VΦ, but a reduced VS,which is consistent with the observed seismic anomalies in the large-low-shear-velocity-provinces(LLSVPs). The existence of such a(Fe, Al)-enriched bridgmanite thermal pile thus can help to understand the origin of the LLSVPs. These results provide new insights for the chemical and structure of the deepest lower mantle.  相似文献

The homologues temperature of a crystalline material is defined as T/T_m, where T is temperature and T_m is the melting(solidus) temperature in Kelvin. It has been widely used to compare the creep strength of crystalline materials. The melting temperature of olivine system,(Mg,Fe)_2SiO_4, decreases with increasing iron content and water content, and increases with confining pressure. At high pressure, phase transition will lead to a sharp change in the melting curve of olivine. After calibrating previous melting experiments on fayalite(Fe_2SiO_4), the triple point of fayalite-Fe_2SiO_4 spinel-liquid is determined to be at 6.4 GPa and 1793 K. Using the generalized means, the solidus and liquidus of dry olivine are described as a function of iron content and pressure up to 6.4 GPa. The change of T/T_m of olivine with depth allows us to compare the strength of the upper mantle with different thermal states and olivine composition. The transition from semi-brittle to ductile deformation in the upper mantle occurs at a depth where T/T_m of olivine equals 0.5. The lithospheric mantle beneath cratons shows much smaller T/T_m of olivine than orogens and extensional basins until the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary where T/T_m 0.66, suggesting a stronger lithosphere beneath cratons. In addition, T/T_m is used to analyze deformation experiments on olivine. The results indicate that the effect of water on fabric transitions in olivine is closely related with pressure. The hydrogen-weakening effect and its relationship with T/T_m of olivine need further investigation. Below 6.4 GPa(200 km), T/T_m of olivine controls the transition of dislocation glide from [100] slip to [001] slip. Under the strain rate of 10~(-12)–10~(-15) s~(-1) and low stress in the upper mantle, the [100](010) slip system(A-type fabric) becomes dominant when T/T_m 0.55–0.60. When T/T_m 0.55–0.60, [001] slip is easier and low T/T_m favors the operation of [001](100) slip system(C-type fabric). This is consistent with the widely observed A-type olivine fabric in naturally deformed peridotites, and the C-type olivine fabric in peridotites that experienced deep subduction in ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic terranes. However, the B-type fabric will develop under high stress and relatively low T/T_m. Therefore, the homologues temperature of olivine established a bridge to extrapolate deformation experiments to rheology of the upper mantle. Seismic anisotropy of the upper mantle beneath cratons should be simulated using a four-layer model with the relic A-type fabric in the upper lithospheric mantle, the B-type fabric in the middle layer, the newly formed A- or B-type fabric near the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary, and the asthenosphere dominated by diffusion creep below the Lehmann discontinuity. Knowledge about transition mechanisms of olivine fabrics is critical for tracing the water distribution and mantle flow from seismic anisotropy.  相似文献

P-wave arrival times of both regional and teleseismic earthquakes were inverted to obtain mantle structures of East Asia.No fast(slab) velocity anomalies was not find beneath the 660-km discontinuity through tomography besides a stagnant slab within the transition zone.Slow P-wave velocity anomalies are present at depths of 100-250 km below the active volcanic arc and East Asia. The western end of the flat stagnant slab is about 1 500 km west to active trench and may also be correlated with prominent surface topographic break in eastern China. We suggested that active mantle convection might be operating within this horizontally expanded "mantle wedge" above both the active subducting slabs and the stagnant flat slabs beneath much of the North China plain. Both the widespread Cenozoic volcanism and associated extensional basins in East Asia could be the manifestation of this vigorous upper mantle convection.Cold or thermal anomalies associated with the stagnant slabs above the 660-km discontinuity have not only caused a broad depression of the boundary due to its negative Clapeyron slope but also effectively shielded the asthenosphere and continental lithosphere above from any possible influence of mantle plumes in the lower mantle.  相似文献

The strong control that the endothermic phase change from spinel to perovskite and magnesiowüstite at a depth of 660 km has on mantle convection is discussed. The phase transition determines the morphology and length scales of upflow and downflow structures and, through retardation of sinking slabs, can cause an avalanche phenomenon involving rapid flushing of cold upper mantle material down to the base of the lower mantle. The phase change significantly heats plumes that rise from the lower mantle and penetrate into the upper mantle. The exothermic phase change from olivine to spinel at a depth of 400 km in the mantle mitigates the effects of the dynamically and thermally dominant endothermic phase transition.  相似文献

Water released from subducting slabs through a dehydration reaction may lower the viscosity of the mantle significantly. Thus, we may expect a low viscosity wedge (LVW) above the subducting slabs. The LVW coupled with a large-scale flow induced by the subducting slabs may allow the existence of roll-like small-scale convection whose axis is normal to the strike of the plate boundary. Such a roll structure may explain the origin of along-arc variations of mantle temperature proposed recently in northeast Japan. We study this possibility using both 2D and 3D models with/without pressure- and temperature-dependent viscosity. 2D models without pressure and temperature dependence of viscosity show that, with a reasonable geometry of the LVW and subduction speed, small-scale convection is likely to occur when the viscosity of the LVW is less than 1019 Pa s. Corresponding 3D model studies reveal that the wavelength of rolls depends on the depth of the LVW. The inclusion of temperature-dependent viscosity requires the existence of further low viscosity in the LVW, since temperature dependence suppresses the instability of the cold thermal boundary layer. Pressure (i.e. depth) dependence coupled with temperature dependence of the viscosity promotes short wavelength instabilities. The model, which shows a relatively moderate viscosity decrease in the LVW (most of the LVW viscosity is 1018∼1019 Pa s) and a wavelength of roll ∼80 km, has a rather small activation energy and volume (∼130 kJ/mol and ∼4 cm3/mol) of the viscosity. This small activation energy and volume may be possible, if we regard them as an effective viscosity of non-linear rheology.  相似文献

Assuming that Rayleigh-Benard flow occurs within the upper mantle, ascending plumes must undergo horizontal displacement during ascent that can be traced at the surface. It is shown that the Hawaiian-Emperor bend cannot be formed if the convection rate is of the same order of magnitude as the ascent rate of the plumes. The plume patterns obtained by push-pull or lithospheric sliding are similar to that of the Hawaiian-Emperor chain. Hence the present results support the sliding model.  相似文献

Introduction The velocity field of surface plate motion can be split into a poloidal and a toroidal parts. At the Earth′s surface, the toroidal component is manifested by the existence of transform faults, and the poloidal component by the presence of convergence and divergence,i.e.spreading and subduc-tion zones. They have coupled each other and completely depicted the characteristics of plate tec-tonic motions. The mechanism of poloidal field has been studied fairly clearly which is related to …  相似文献

Based on the former workers study results such as numerical simulation of fluid mechanics, seismic tomography of the whole earth and igneous rocks, the basic characteristics of mantle plumes are summarized in detail, namely the mantle plume, from the D″layer near the core-mantle bouundary(CMB)of 2900 km deep,is characterized by the spape of large head and thin narrow conduit,by the physical property of high temperature and low viscosity. The LIP(large igneous province)is the best exhibition when the mantle plume ascends to the surface.According to the basic characteristics of the mantle plumes and the LIP,as well as the temporal-spatial relationships between the mantle plume and continental breakup, the detailed research on petrology,geochemistry,temporal-spatial distribution, tectonic background of the Cenozoic-Mesozoic igneous rocks and gravity anomaly distribution in East China has been done.As a result, the Mesozoic igneous rocks in Southeast China should not be regarded as an example of typical LIP related to mantle plumes.for their related characteristics are not consitent with those of the typical LIPs related to mantle plumes. The Cenozoic igneous rocks in Northeast China have no the typical characteristics of mantle plumes and hotspots,so the Cenozoic volcanism in Northeast China might have no the direct relationships with the activity of mantle plumes.  相似文献

A collection of numerical simulations of 2D axi-symmetric thermal convection is presented here. The aim is to investigate the shape of geoid anomalies and dynamic topography above a plume. The simulation is based on the Boussinesq approximation and infinite Prandtl number and is carried out in the spherical shell with strongly temperature- and depth-dependent Arrhenius-type viscosity. According to the Arrhenius law, plume models with purely depth-dependent rheology are unphysical and should be taken with care. The strongly coupled temperature- and depth-dependent viscosity enables us to better understand the plume's behavior inside the Earth. The topography and geoid anomalies produced from plumes are sensitive to rheology of the mantle and rheology of the plume; both have effects on shape and amplitude of the geoid anomalies. We determined different categories of the geoid which are related to various rheology. Depth-dependent viscosity models show a geoid with a negative sign above the plume, and temperature-dependent viscosity models depict a bell-shaped geoid. We identified different behaviors in the combined model with temperature- and pressure-dependent viscosity.  相似文献

The thermochemical model of the authors is shown to be naturally related to the general theory of V.P. Myasnikov. A heterogeneous modification of this homogeneous theory is described in light of the present ideas on the differentiation of the mantle substance at the boundary with the core and its eclogitization during submersion from the outer boundary and at the endothermic phase transition at a depth of 670 km. The Earth’ls evolution from an initial hot state is numerically modeled. The evolution is shown to start with an abrupt mantle overturn followed by a long period of steady evolution. Global mantle overturns recur a few times, gradually weaken, and are transformed into regional avalanches. The spatial configuration of overturns is represented by a predominant funnel-shaped sink and a few (three to five) ascending superplumes, which convincingly explains the causes of the formation of supercontinents, the opening of oceans, and the observed asymmetry of the planet. The times of overturns remarkably correlate with geological data on the existence of supercontinents. The processes of core growth, mantle cooling, and crust formation exhibit a clearly expressed stepwise behavior. The supplementation of the endothermic phase transition by chemical transformations favors the overcoming of the phase barrier between the upper and lower mantle, enhances the nonlinearity of mantle convection, and imparts a heterocyclic pattern to the process of evolution. It is shown that the lower mantle plume of chemical origin is fragmented by the phase transition into parts that, interacting with the thermal convection, generate a system of upper mantle plumes. This modeling provides an explanation of the coeval systems of oceanic plateaus and continental traps observed on the surface.  相似文献
