We present spectral variations of the binary X-ray pulsar LMC X-4 observed with the RXTE/PCA during different phases of its 30.5 day long third period. Only out-of-eclipse data were used for this study. The 3–25 keV spectrum, modeled with high energy cut-off power-law and iron line emission is found to show strong dependence on the intensity state. Correlations between the Fe line emission flux and different parameters of the continuum are presented here.  相似文献

We briefly describe our recent Monte Carlo calculations of the energy and angular distributions of neutrons escaping from the solar atmosphere. Comparing the calculation results with measurements of the neutron flux from the flares, we determined the angular distribution and energy spectrum of the accelerated ions. We also describe our calculations of the time dependence of the 2.223 MeV line emission, which provide a sensitive measure of the photospheric 3He abundance. We find that the SMM measurements of the time dependence of the 2.2 MeV line emission from the flare of 1982 June 3 imply a 3He/H ratio of (2.3±1.2)×10–5 at the 90% confidence level.  相似文献

We present results of the ASCA observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4507. The 0.5–10 keV spectrum is rather complex and consists of several components: (i) a hard X-ray power law heavily absorbed by a column density of about 3-1023 cm−2, (ii) a narrow Fe Kα line at 6.4 keV, (iii) soft continuum emission well above the extrapolation of the absorbed hard power law and (iv) a narrow emission line at ∼0.9 keV. The line energy, consistent with highly ionized neon (Ne IX ), may indicate that the soft X-ray emission is derived from a combination of resonant scattering and fluorescence in a photoionized gas. Some contribution to the soft X-ray spectrum from thermal emission, as a blend of Fe L lines, by a starburst component in the host galaxy cannot be ruled out with the present data.  相似文献

Prominent Fe Kα line emission is detected in the XMM–Newton spectrum of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Arp 220. The centroid of the line is found at an energy of 6.7 keV and the equivalent width of the line is  EW ∼ 1.9 keV  (at 3.5σ significance). A few other spectral features are found at various degrees of significance in the lower energy range on a hard 2.5–10 keV continuum  (Γ∼ 1)  . The large EW of the Fe K line poses a problem with interpreting the hard X-ray emission as integrated X-ray binary emission. A thermal emission spectrum with a temperature of   kT ∼ 7 keV  modified by absorption of   N H≃ 3 × 1022 cm−2  , can describe the 2.5–10 keV continuum shape and the Fe K emission. A hot bubble that is shocked internally in a starburst region would have a similar temperature and gives a good explanation for the observed X-ray properties with a high star formation rate. An ensemble of radio supernovae in a dense environment, as suggested from VLBI imaging, could be another possibility, if such powerful supernovae are produced continuously at a high rate. However, the apparent lack of emission from X-ray binaries is incompatible with the high supernova rate (∼2 SNe yr−1) required by both interpretations. Highly photoionized, low-density gas illuminated by a hidden Compton-thick active galactic nucleus is a possible alternative for the hard X-ray emission, which can be tested by examining whether radiative recombination continua from highly ionized Ca and Fe are present in better quality data from a forthcoming observation.  相似文献

The problem on heating the atmospheres of T Tauri stars by radiation from an accretion shock has been solved. The structure and radiation spectrum of the emerging so-called hot spot have been calculated in the LTE approximation. The emission not only in continuum but also in lines has been taken into account for the first time when calculating the spot spectrum. Comparison with observations has shown that the strongest of these lines manifest themselves as narrow components of helium and metal emission lines, while the weaker ones decrease significantly the depth of photospheric absorption lines, although until now, this effect has been thought to be due to the emission continuum alone. The veiling by lines changes the depth of different photospheric lines to a very different degree even within a narrow spectral range. Therefore, the nonmonotonic wavelength dependence of the degree of veiling r found for some CTTS does not suggest a nontrivial spectral energy distribution of the veiling continuum. In general, it makes sense to specify the degree of veiling r only by providing the set of photospheric lines from which this quantity was determined. We show that taking into account the contribution of lines to the veiling of the photospheric spectrum can cause the existing estimates of the accretion rate onto T Tauri stars to decrease by several times, with this being also true for stars with a comparatively weakly veiled spectrum. Neglecting the contribution of lines to the veiling can also lead to appreciable errors in determining the effective temperature, interstellar extinction, radial velocity, and v sin i.  相似文献

I present a model for the ionization cones of NGC1068, and, by extension, for Seyfert Galaxies in general. In this, the cones represent the hypersonic interaction of a sheet of material expelled from close to the galactic nucleus with the interstellar medium of the galaxy. Such a model produces a turbulent magnetically-supported shearing mixing layer with a Kelvin-Helmholtz unstable outer boundary. This drives strong shocks into the dense wall material, and generates fast stand-off shocks in the entrainment flow. The EUV photons produced in the fast shock ionize both the wall material and the entrainment layer to generate the broad highly excited lines that are such a characteristic of the emission line spectrum. This model is consistent with the energy budget, the observed spectrum, the emission line widths, and provides sufficient column density to produce an electron scattering "mirror".  相似文献

Six solar flares were detected by the AVS-F apparatus onboard the CORONAS-F satellite in January 2005. We discuss the temporal profiles and energy spectra of the solar flares of January 20, 17, and 15, 2005 (class X7.1, X3.8, and X2.6, respectively) on the AVS-F data. The active region NOAA 10720 was the source of these flares. The spectra of the flares of January 17 and 20, 2005 contain nuclear lines, a positron line, and a line due to neutron capture line, while only the positron and neutron capture lines can be identified in the spectrum of the flare of January 15, 2005. The spectral features corresponding to these lines were observed during the whole duration of the flares. Analysis of the temporal profile of the flare of January 20, 2005 with a 1-ms temporal resolution in the energy range 0.1–20 MeV reveals the presence of a thin structure (at the 99% confidence level) with typical timescales of 7 to 35 ms.  相似文献

The spectra of disc accreting neutron stars generally show complex curvature, and individual components from the disc, boundary layer and neutron star surface cannot be uniquely identified. Here we show that much of the confusion over the spectral form derives from inadequate approximations for Comptonization and for the iron line. There is an intrinsic low-energy cut-off in Comptonized spectra at the seed photon energy. It is very important to model this correctly in neutron star systems as these have expected seed photon temperatures (from either the neutron star surface, inner disc or self-absorbed cyclotron) of ≈1 keV, clearly within the observed X-ray energy band. There is also reflected continuum emission which must accompany the observed iron line, which distorts the higher energy spectrum. We illustrate these points by a reanalysis of the Ginga spectra of Cyg X-2 at all points along its Z track, and show that the spectrum can be well fitted by models in which the low-energy spectrum is dominated by the disc, while the higher energy spectrum is dominated by Comptonized emission from the boundary layer, together with its reflected spectrum from a relativistically smeared, ionized disc.  相似文献

Data on X-,γ-ray, optical and radio emission from the 1991 June 15 solar flare are considered. We have calculated the spectrum of protons that producesγ-rays during the gradual phase of the flare. The primary proton spectrum can be described as a Bessel-function-type up to 0.8 GeV and a power law with the spectral index ≈3 from 0.8 up to 10 GeV or above. We have also analyzed data on energetic particles near the Earth. Their spectrum differed from that of primary protons producingγ-ray line emission. In the gradual phase of the flare additional pulses of energy release occurred and the time profiles of cm-radio emission andγ-rays in the 0.8–10 MeV energy band and above 50 MeV coincided. A continuous and simultaneous stochastic acceleration of the protons and relativistic electrons at the gradual phase of the flare is considered as a natural explanation of the data.  相似文献

We investigate quantitatively how the peak emission frequency of the overall energy spectrum is at work in distinguishing RBL-like and XBL-like objects. We employ the sample of Giommi et al. (1995) to study the distribution of BL Lacertae objects with various locations of the cutoff of the overall energy spectrum. We find that the sources with the cutoff located at lower frequency are indeed sited in the RBL region of the αrooxplane, while those with the cutoff located at higher frequency are distributed in the XBL region. For a more quantitative study, we employ the BL Lacerta esamples presented by Sambruna et al. (1996), where the peak emission frequency, νp, of each source is estimated by fitting the data with a parabolic function. In the plot of αrx -log νp we find that, in the four different regions divided by the αrx = 0.75 line and thelogνp = 14.7 line, all the RBL-like objects are inside the upper left region, while most XBL-like objects are within the lower right region. A few sources are located in the lower left region. No sources are in the upper right region. This result is rather quantitative. It provides an evidence supporting what Giommi et al. (1995) suggested: RBL-like and XBL-like objects can be distinguished by the difference of the peak emission frequency of the overall energy spectrum. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

High-spectral-resolution measurements of the 2.223 MeV neutron capture line and the 0.511 MeV positron-electron annihilation line have been made with the Reuven Ramaty High-Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager during the X4.8 flare of 23 July 2002. We have tried to explain both the time histories of the 2.223 MeV line and the 0.511 MeV line, adopting a power-law spectrum of accelerated ions. The results show that with a power-law spectral index of 3.52, the calculational time histories can roughly reproduce the observations. An improved fit between the calculated 2.223 MeV line and the observed 2.223 MeV line can be achieved if we allow the spectrum of accelerated ions to vary with time.  相似文献

SAX J2103.5+4545 is the Be/X-ray binary (BeX) with the shortest orbital period. It shows extended bright and faint X-ray states that last for a few hundred days. The main objective of this work is to investigate the relationship between the X-ray and optical variability and to characterize the spectral and timing properties of the bright and faint states. We have found a correlation between the spectral and temporal parameters that fit the energy and power spectra. Softer energy spectra correspond to softer power spectra. That is to say, when the energy spectrum is soft, the power at high frequencies is suppressed. We also present the results of our monitoring of the Hα line of the optical counterpart since its discovery in 2003. There is a correlation between the strength and shape of the Hα line, originated in the circumstellar envelope of the massive companion and the X-ray emission from the vicinity of the neutron star. Hα emission, indicative of an equatorial disc around the B-type star, is detected whenever the source is bright in X-rays. When the disc is absent, the X-ray emission decreases significantly. The long-term variability of SAX J2103.5+4545 is characterized by fast episodes of disc loss and subsequent reformation. The time-scales for the loss and reformation of the disc (about 2 yr) are the fastest among BeXs.  相似文献

The large active region AR NOAA 5200 from October 1988 is used to investigate the concept of the “halo,” a magnetosphere-like structure above the active region. This structure is studied by using radio spectral polarization observations with high spatial resolution obtained mainly with the radio telescope RATAN-600. In the case of AR 5200 the halo emission accounted for >50% of the total AR emission. The results of the analysis of the observational data and of the model calculations allow us to reach the following conclusions: (1) The halo is a large, nonstructured, source of emission with a size of the total AR, with the emission centered at the dividing (neutral) line of polarities of the bipolar sunspot group. (2) The emission spectrum allows us to distinguish two components: a thermal part and a nonthermal part. The presence of two components implies that there are two populations of particles with different energy levels in the emission region. The phenomenon of inversion of the polarized halo radio emission could be explained by the influence of propagation conditions inside the source. The term “self-inversion” is introduced. The maximum in the halo density flux spectrum at wavelengths of 5 –10 cm may be explained by scattering resulting from the strong suppression of the emissivity of nonthermal electrons at these and longer wavelengths.  相似文献

Strong evidence for cooling flows has been found in low-resolution X-ray imaging and spectra of many clusters of galaxies. However, high-resolution X-ray spectra of several clusters from the Reflection Grating Spectrometer on XMM-Newton now show a soft X-ray spectrum inconsistent with a simple cooling flow. The main problem is a lack of the emission lines expected from gas cooling below 1–2 keV. Lines from gas at about 2–3 keV are observed, even in a high-temperature cluster such as A1835, indicating that gas is cooling down to about 2–3 keV, but is not found at lower temperatures. Here we discuss several solutions to the problem: heating, mixing, differential absorption and inhomogeneous metallicity. Continuous or sporadic heating creates further problems, including the targeting of the heat at the cooler gas and also the high total energy required. So far there is no clear observational evidence for widespread heating, or shocks, in cluster cores, except in radio lobes which occupy only part of the volume. Alternatively, if the metals in the intracluster medium are not uniformly spread but are clumped, then little line emission is expected from the gas cooling below 1 keV. The low-metallicity part cools without line emission, whereas the strengths of the soft X-ray lines from the metal-rich gas depend on the mass fraction of that gas and not on the abundance, since soft X-ray line emission dominates the cooling function below 2 keV.  相似文献

In dense hot star winds, the infrared and radio continua are dominated by free‐free opacity and recombination emission line spectra. In the case of a spherically symmetric outflow that is isothermal and expanding at constant radial speed, the radiative transfer for the continuum emission from a dense wind is analytic. Even the emission profile shape for a recombination line can be derived. Key to these derivations is that the opacity scales with only the square of the density. These results are well‐known. Here an extension of the derivation is developed that also allows for line blends and the inclusion of an additional power‐law dependence beyond just the density dependence. The additional power‐law is promoted as a representation of a radius dependent clumping factor. It is shown that differences in the line widths and equivalent widths of the emission lines depend on the steepness of the clumping power‐law. Assuming relative level populations in LTE in the upper levels of He II, an illustrative application of the model to Spitzer/IRS spectral data of the carbon‐rich star WR 90 is given (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Iron emission lines at 6.4–6.97 keV, identified with fluorescent Kα transitions, are among the strongest discrete features in the X-ray band. These are therefore one of the most powerful probes to infer the properties of the plasma in the innermost part of the accretion disc around a compact object. In this paper, we present a recent XMM–Newton observation of the X-ray burster 4U 1705−44, where we clearly detect a relativistically smeared iron line at about 6.7 keV, testifying with high statistical significance that the line profile is distorted by high-velocity motion in the accretion disc. As expected from disc reflection models, we also find a significant absorption edge at about 8.3 keV; this feature appears to be smeared, and is compatible with being produced in the same region where the iron line is produced. From the line profile, we derive the physical parameters of the inner accretion disc with large precision. The line is identified with the Kα transition of highly ionized iron, Fe  xxv , the inner disc radius is   R in= 14 ± 2  R g  (where R g is the Gravitational radius,   GM / c 2  ), the emissivity dependence from the disc radius is   r −2.27±0.08  , the inclination angle with respect to the line of sight is   i = 39°± 1°  . Finally, the XMM–Newton spectrum shows evidences of other low-energy emission lines, which again appear broad and their profiles are compatible with being produced in the same region where the iron line is produced.  相似文献

Multiple resonance scattering of radiation in a spectrum line with absorption in the continuum is examined. It is assumed that the scattering atmosphere is semi-infinite and that there is no magnetic field or continuum emission at the frequencies of the spectrum line. The polarization characteristics of the emerging radiation are determined for unpolarized primary radiation sources distributed uniformly within an atmosphere in the case of a Voigt absorption profile. The calculations employ an iterative solution of the Ambartsumyan-Chandrasekhar matrix integral equation.  相似文献

Observations of the transient X-ray pulsar 4U0115+634 with the ART-P telescope aboard the Granat Observatory during the outburst in February 1990 are presented. The source exhibited a strong, regular and irregular variability, including X-ray bursts of duration 300–500 s. Two absorption features were detected in the source's photon spectrum at ~12 and ~22 keV, which were interpreted as the lines of resonance scattering of its emission at the first and second cyclotron harmonics. The magnetic-field strength B on the neutron-star surface that corresponds to these lines is ~1.3 × 1012 G. The ratio of the line energies slightly differs from the harmonic ratio 1: 2. Moreover, this ratio and the line energies themselves vary appreciably with phase on a time scale of one pulsation period. The dependence of other spectral parameters for 4U0115+634 on pulse phase is investigated.  相似文献

The defining property of Soft Gamma Repeaters is the emission of short, bright bursts of X-rays and soft γ-rays. Here we present the continuum and line spectral properties of a large sample of bursts from SGR 1806-20, observed with the Proportional Counter Array (PCA) onboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). Using 10 trail spectral models (5 single and 5 two component models), we find that the burst continua are best fitted by the single component models: cutoff power-law, optically thin bremsstrahlung, and simple power-law. Time resolved spectroscopy show that there are two absorption lines at ∼5 keV and 20 keV in some bursts. The lines are relatively narrow with 90% upper limit on the line widths of 0.5–1.5 keV for the 5 keV feature and 1–3 keV for the 20 keV feature. Both lines have considerable equivalent width of 330–850 eV for the 5 keV feature and 780–2590 eV for the 20 keV feature. We examined whether theses spectral lines are dependent upon the choice of a particular continuum model and find no such dependence. Besides, we find that the 5 keV feature is pronounced with high confidence in the cumulative joint spectrum of the entire burst sample, both in the individual detectors of the PCA and in the co-added detectors spectrum. We confront the features against possible instrumental effects and find that none can account for the observed line properties. The two features do not seem to be connected to the same physical mechanism because (1) they do not always occur simultaneously, (2) while the 5 keV feature occurs at about the same energy, the 20 keV line centroid varies significantly from burst to burst over the range 18–22 keV, and (3) the centroid of the lines shows anti-correlated red/blue shifts. The transient appearance of the features in the individual bursts and in portions of the same burst, together with the spectral evolution seen in some bursts point to a complex emission mechanism that requires further investigation.   相似文献

We report the discovery of emission features in the X-ray spectrum of GRO J1655–40 obtained with RXTE during the observation of 1997 February 26. We have fitted the features first by two Gaussian lines which in four spectra analysed have average energies of 5.85±0.08 and 7.32±0.13 keV, strongly suggestive that these are the red- and blueshifted wings of an iron disc line. These energies imply a velocity of ∼0.33 c . The blue wing is less bright than in the calculated profiles of disc lines near a black hole subject to Doppler boosting; however, known Fe absorption lines in GRO J1655–40 at energies between ∼7 and 8 keV can reduce the apparent brightness of the blue wing. Secondly, we have fitted the spectra using the disc line model of Laor based on a full relativistic treatment plus an absorption line, and show that good fits are obtained. This gives a rest-frame energy of the disc line between 6.4 and 6.8 keV, indicating that the line is iron K α emission probably of significantly ionized material. The Laor model shows that the line originates in a region of the accretion disc extending from ∼10 Schwarzschild radii from the black hole outwards. The line is direct evidence for the black hole nature of the compact object, and is the first discovery of a highly red- and blueshifted iron disc line in a Galactic source.  相似文献
